Actress, writer, and producer Majel Barrett-Roddenberry, the widow of Star Trek creator Gene Roddenberry, has died. Barrett portrayed several characters throughout the Star Trek franchise, notably Christine Chapel, Lwaxana Troi, and the Starfleet computer voice. According to her family, Barrett died of leukemia at her home in Bel Air, California. She was 76 years old.

A great woman and a cornerstone of Star Trek has passed away. Show your respect here.

Why do they all have to die? First it was Gary Gygax, and now this...

She also played the first officer in the original pilot of the original series. 1964, mind you. The network balked at both a female in the command structure and Spock, and Gene Roddenberry decided that he could only fight for one of them in the eventual series.

Let me be the first to say...

She's dead, Jim.

Still, she was a great ambassador to the fans, and sci-fi in general. Class act all the way.

Fortunately, she finished her voice work (as the computer, natch) for the new movie, so we'll get one more chance to hear her perform.

RIP

Are they going to launch her ashes up into space too?
