After reading a few posts about the superiority of a few of the companions, I got curious as to which one was the best by numbers.

Rough break down
{table=head]Ranking|HP|AC|Fort|Ref|Will|Attack|Damage

Best|Bear|Lizard|Bear|Raptor|Wolf|Raptor|Bear

Worst|Raptor|Bear|Raptor|Bear/Boar|Lizard|Bear|Raptor
[/table]

This makes it kinda difficult IMO to determine whether or not the Bear is the Worst and Wolf is the Best.

I've played only a little of 4e, but from looking at those numbers, it seems there any difference in the companions is pretty negligable (surprise).

Only 1 or 2 points between them, even at high level, With the exception of the bear, which has moderately better hp, and the raptor, which is significantly worse than the others pretty much all around. I'm assuming that's supposed to make up for the flying.

Can't tell from your info about damage output, but I'd say the choice seems to be mainly about fluff. Honestly I'm surprised they didn't just give generic animal companion stats and have the type of animal not make any difference at all.

That's what they did for druids. Personally I prefer the ranger way.

But that table does not take the most important things into account. 4E is all about offense and mobility. -2 to hit is a big deal, and the table doesn't list that e.g. the wolf deals a lot more damage, and that the spider and raptor are much more mobile.

Bears aren't strictly the worse, really. Their attack bonus gets better the higher your level and they're extremely resilliant. Wolves deal the most damage, though, as long as they have CA. Without it, the Bear edges ahead.

I'm with Kurald, you left out speed and damage, and something that doesn't really fit on the table: any special abilities each companion might have, like the wolf's extra damage for combat advantage and the boar's charging bonus. Also, many ranger powers have an additional effect depending on what sort of companion you chose.
