View Full Version : Question about Dawn of War: Winter Assault

Okay so I started playing recently with a friend, since it's out on gametap...

I managed to eradicate all of his units, even his Giant Sword Wielding Flame Demon of whatnot... and march up to his base...

Except it was invisible.

I could not find a way around it.. I wanted to get some artillery up there but then I ran out of power and was overrun.

So my question is... How do you get around the Eldar's Invisibility?

Edit: I was Space Marines, if that helps.

I believe Commanders could detect invisibility in Winter Assault. So if you're the Space Marines, you can use your Force Commander, Librarian, or Chaplain to reveal the Eldar's base.

Oh I see...

I kinda didn't have any. It really didn't mention that in the tooltip that I saw..

While I'm on the topic any general advice for Space Marines?

Hum...

I don't remember which one has the edge in Ranged combat and/or Melee combat between Eldar Vs Space Marines.. I specialise in Imperial Guard myself.

Let me see.. Heavy Bolters with Dreadnaughts in the front. Rush the guy in his base, and try to avoid letting him take the offensive. Eldars are dangerous when you let them move around.

Yeah, Cloaking bases are bad enough. Cloaking, teleporting bases are worse.

The primary method of fighting them is Area Control. Patrol the entire map, find not only his base, but also his portals, and eliminate them.

And beware in Team games. A good Eldar player always has some portals in his allies' bases, to help them when they get attacked, and to have a safe place to run to when his defenses fall.

The Librarian is the hero that can definitely detect cloaked units. Other than that, there's a good reason why you can produce those little floaty skulls in Listening Posts.

Librarians and Force Commanders, along with the servo-skulls, should be able to detect them.

Also, I THINK that if you were to build a turret nearby, everything would suddenly appear.

I much prefer Guard when I fight Eldar though; their HQ can reveal infiltrators. Just get a bunch of heavy weapons, upgrade to lascannons, deploy in the area you think his base is, and use all five HQs to reveal bits of it. Take out webway gates first, they're what's providing the concealment.

And hope that isn't just one of several bases.

What I normally do when playing Eldar is build many bases, and use the map size to help determine how many minimum:

Square maps:
126 - 1
256 - 2
512 - 4
1024 - Loads.

Rectangle maps:
126 - N/A
256 - 2
512 - 3
1024 - 4

Each of these could consist of as little as an aspect portal and a webway gate, but that's all you need for quick reinforcement... a team of builders on the frontline to add more Webway portals which can then teleport in turrets etc, and of course (on bigger maps) at least one webway portal literally surrounded in power generators... and so on.

Basically, I'm saying watch out. Determine exactly where his troops are coming from. Fight along the path, send scouts ahead. He'll likely try and divert your army, be wise to this - use your own infiltrators to check how many troops he's sending here, chances are he'll have his base defended. If you lose the infiltrators to turrets, get your commander up and nuke the place. Orbital bombardment - just because you can't see something doesn't mean you can't reduce it to slag.

To be honest with you, though... Space Marines aren't the best army to use against Eldar. They're actually what I often play against when I use Eldar; an army of Dark Reapers supported by Howling Banshees, a Farseer and a LOT of Fire Prisms doing strafing runs tends to destroy most Marine armies.

Just an idea, by the way - Lights of the Warp Apocalypse. Free mod, just search the various mod sites for it. It'll improve your squad and vehicle cap, give you a reason to use quickstart resources - while it gives him a lot of advantages there, it's possible to be at Tier 3 in about ten minutes no problem. Good mod, if your computers and the connections are powerful enough. The fact that it gives you a super-powerful ship to surface missile just perfect for destroying a hidden Eldar base definitely isn't a factor here. You both have to run it, of course..

Leaders are your friend.

When playing Space Marines, I'm a fan of attatching servo-skulls to every squad that doesn't already contain a Captain or Librarian.

When sending over large assault grooup, however, I usually reveal enough infiltrators that I sacrifice a few skulls for apothecaries.

Also - since you're talking about Winter Assault, here, you don't have a cap to the number of turrents you have have about.
While this severly overpowers the guard, turrents still (If I remeber right) detect infiltared unit, bring up a few servitors and build.

I know in Soulstorm, the Force Commander doesn't detect, is this different in Winter Assault?

Yea, eldar are tricksey little bastards. If you know where his main base is, try to block him in. Kill any bonesinger trying to escape. Now comb the rest of the map with scouts + Skull Probes. Eliminate ANY webway gates you encounter.

Then, after you are sure the map is clear, crush him soundly.

Space marine sergants can get scanners at the armory that detect invisabilty.

A suggestion is to always get some sergents, and preferably a strong, fully equiped squad, then attach your commander to it. A second squad with a librarian, chaplin or apocathary is good for support.

Another question, from me: I got the dark crusade+ winter assault and orignal DoW pack, but the winter assault CD key was printed wrong. It's been to long to return the game, so does anyone know what the policy for cd keys is for DoW? I.E. do you need to pay for them, there is none, they are free, etc.

If I remember correctly from Winter Assault, Apothecaries also operate as Detectors.

If you suspect cloaked units or structures but have no detectors available, then area effect weapons will still damage them - Orbital Bombardment and Whirlwind's attack ground command are the two main (only?) Space Marine options for that.

Slannesh: if you believe that your CD key has been printed incorrectly, contact customer support. They'll best be able to advise you on Relic/THQ's current CDkey policy: Relic/THQ Tech Support (http://forums.relicnews.com/showthread.php?t=168206).

Damn, I wish I had that in Soulstorm... that would make the Eldar battle MUCH easier.

Try patching it. At least in DC they released a patch a few months back to allow Chaps to attach. Now sure about WA though.

I usually play Dark Crusade (I can't find my soulstorm CD)
I know that, at the very least, theres a wargear in Campagin mode that lets him detect infiltraitors.

Not in Soulstorm, unfortunately. He's got a lot of goodies, including a personal teleporter, but no detector.

Of course, by the time you get to the Eldar fight, you've got the Chief Librarian, who is a detector, plus the regular librarian, who is a detector, and the skull probes. You've got ways of sweeping, but it never hurts to have another.

On another note Grey Knights + Librarian = massive AE fun!
