I recently read the old webcomic Exploitation Now. Later in its run it gets dramatic (before it was fanservice and humor) and follows Bush and Jordan, a pair of teenage girls.

Bush is a violent amoral criminal.

Jordan, who has the somewhat flimsy excuse of goverment experiments on her and murdered parents, is a super-genius who *ahem* "gets off" at the idea of causing widespread death and destruction. She commited her first murder at 8 and has the blood of hundreds if not thousands of innocents on her hands.

The comic does a fairly good job of making them sympathetic characters.

Any other comics with deep villains in central roles? Im kinda interested now.

When She Was Bad (http://whenshewasbad.smackjeeves.com/) comes to mind.
Also...not quite a villain protagonist, but Jack (of the eponymous, very very very NSFW webcomic) begins his story in Hell, not remembering what he's there for - but, supposedly, was a genocidal dictator in life. A generally sympathetic character, but we get glimpses of the darkness beneath the surface (which scares him, too).

I'm quite fond of Darken (http://www.darkencomic.com/d/20031216.html), and there's always 8-Bit Theater (http://www.nuklearpower.com/daily.php?date=010302) I suppose!

...I can't believe I forgot Darken.
Dunno if 8-Bit Theater counts, though - it's good, but it's also pure comedy. The characters, while hilarious, don't have real depth or character development.

Natch Evil (http://www.natchevil.com/comic.php) comes to mind:

a note to read though: this comic comes with a Story Arc archive list. Use it. The comic is divided between two main types of stories, the main one based on the lead Serial Killer protagonist, and then the storylines based on the "Shoulder Devils" of all the main characters. The shoulder devil storylines suck.

The comic itself is sub-par on drawing, and i wouldn't call the writing fantastic, but I do like the characterizations of Jack. Also note that pretty much everything is a slight combination of drama and tongue-in cheek humor that comes across as inconsistent sometimes. (it's a love/hate comic of mine).

Evil, Inc. (http://www.evil-comic.com/) is pretty much the definition of this, though the protagonists aren't really that villainous (they do try though).

8-bit theatre (http://nuklearpower.com/)

Black Mage: you'd have to have a fighter level int to think he's not incredibly CE.
Thief: want's to steal everything.
Red Mage: vane and doesn't really seem interested in aiding others
Fighter: too dumb to really be a protagonist

Schlock Mercenary (http://www.schlockmercenary.com/index.html) comes to mind. The main character has been called a sociopath more times than the author has used the 'foot in mouth' line.

anti-HEROES (http://ah.indolents.com/comic), OOTS style and written by a playgrounder. They're not villain protagonists. Like the title says, they're anti-heroes, and honestly, I think even the term "anti-hero" is a bit of a stretch. In any case, Anti-hero=/=villain.

I was going to suggest Bob from Bob and George, but it's hard to classify him as either a protagonist or an antagonist.

Looking for Group (http://www.lfgcomic.com/page/1) comes to mindSo does Least I Could Do (http://www.leasticoulddo.com), for that matter.

Yeah, I went there. Warning, not necessarily safe for work, depending on standards and day.

When She Was Bad (http://whenshewasbad.smackjeeves.com/) comes to mind.

The art is intermittently terrible, but this is actually a pretty good comic. Thanks for the recommendation.

Exterminatus Now (http://exterminatusnow.comicgenesis.com/) probably almost counts - although the protagonists are technically on the "Good" side in their own continuum, they truly are among the most perverted bunch of degenerates that revel in everything from wholesale murder and torture of prisoners, right up to *le gasp!* copyright infringement! :smalleek::smallwink:

The setting is an acquired taste, mind...

You could try Marlith (http://www.marilith.com/archive.php?date=20041215). She is an assassin, granted it has the Hollywood twist of she wants to retire, but there is still plenty of killing going on. Hard to follow the story line at times (Seems to jump stories at times), and has been gaps in the updating when the writer has had to find a new artist, but over all, I find it enjoyable to read.

A word of warning: It is not realy safe for work.

Also, Marsh Rocket (http://marsh-rocket.com/). They are mercenaries and not employed by the good guys.

Hm...Nah. Those guys are antiheroes, really. They're mercenary, not evil.

Plan B (http://www.goonpatrol.com/comic/?webcomic_post=plan_b_1_01) just wrapped up. The main protagonist, Veronica, is the villain. I don't love her, but she has a point when she calls the superheroes on their bull.
