Welcome to Random Banter

Here are the rules. Any deviation will be met with swift retribution. All Clerics have Storm of Vengeance prepared and Paladins have their Smites recharged!

If you aren't familiar with D&D classes, change Clerics and Paladins to "Trained Assassins" And references to Storms of Vengeances and Smites to "Stabbity Death"

The rules are spoilered for simplicity's sake, but you must read them! There will be a quiz later!

1. Spam. For the purposes of RB, one word posts are generally considered spam. Likewise, posts that are nothing but *actions like this* are also be considered spam. Remember that the quality of the post's content is much better than the speed of your response.

2. This isn't the Play by Post or Town forum, nor is it the Silly Message Board Games or Structured Games forum. Please avoid continuous roleplay or mock battles and fights such as the "competition for control of the universe".

3. If it's already a thread, don't bring it to RB. RB has such a huge range of subject matter even restricted to the little snippets that probably don't warrant their own thread, it doesn't need legitimate thread topics cluttering it up as well. The exception to this is to bring something that is off-topic from one thread, but on-topic for RB and the subject doesn't warrant a thread of its own.

4. Don't advertise other threads in RB. Just because these new threads move at speeds more appropriate to a message board than an IM session doesn't mean you need to come over to RB and brow beat people into posting in your latest brainchild.

5. Please don't post single line posts alerting us to your current status -- as in "I'm back." This is Random Banter, not "How to stalk Random GitP forum members."

6. Don't poke, kick or bump the thread. It will move at whatever pace it wants to. Also, please refrain from Captain Obvious comments akin to "My, the thread is fast today."

7. Random Banter can only be as good, or as entertaining, as you make it. Demands to be entertained will fall on deaf ears unless you can add something more meaningful to the conversation.

8. As this is a public forum, where the current topic is nicely recorded for you, and not a conversation where you could have missed the beginning, please refrain from asking something to the effect of "What's the topic?". Please take the time to read up a bit first.

9. Thread Creator must include the words "Random" and "Banter" as well as the thread #. Try to be concise as well.

10. Every post should contain two visible, legible complete sentences, Subject and Predicate. C'mon, make your old English teachers proud.

11. Remember, Random Banter is not your IM client. If you want to have a back and forth discussion with just one person, look in their contact information for IM details.

12. Whenever a new thread is created, all "first post", "first page", and all posts of that nature will be deleted by the administrators. Please avoid doing this, as it is frustrating for them to deal with one-lined posts like this.

13. Double-posting is not your friend. We have edit buttons for a reason.

This thread is for random discussion, not random chit chat. That is to say, this is a forum, not your IM client. People have set up an unofficial IRC chat thingy for that sort of thing. Not only will you not annoy the people here, you will also help increase the popularity of the IRC chat.

I think it's time we get this thing started!

Me too. Dogs look up to you, and cats look down on you, so a mixture of both is definitely needed.

I do like cats, but have always been more of a dog person. That being said, the only kind of pet I can reasonably accomodate in my home is a cat, so that is what I have.

I can't wait to buy a house and get a dog... Black Labs are my favorite breed.

Edit: And Dirk, It's easy to love any breed of dog, even if you normally find them annoying. I'm sure if I got a chihuahua I would feel the same way... :smalltongue:

heck my entirely-hypothetical pet squirrel would eat a chihuahua. fox squirrels get pretty big, and i bet they got at least 4 points more dex than any ol' dog.

also, squirrels are known to prey on other animals, according to the wikipedia. primarily other small rodents and such, but still. ain't nobody afraid of a chihuahua.

@^: dun worry. That means you've just made a hundred gold or so for auctioning off. It's not much, but at least you got that, right? And maybe more skill, and the knowledge of not to stand in a patrolling NPC's path.

So, um, anyone else like cheese?

@V: Of course not, that would be silly. I just wanted to point out that I have, in fact, heard of someone being mauled by a vicious cat.

Something similar also happened to a friend of mine's mother. My friend, her mother, and her grandmother returned home from the hospital (where the grandmother had been recently treated) and as they entered the house the grandmother's cat attacked my friend's mother completely out of nowhere. She needed 18 stitches in her leg.

Good day to all the people of the playground, I am just popping in to say Hello, maybe I'll discuss something, but I have to get ready for something in 5 or 10 minutes, so it will have to be short.
Firstly, my opinion on cats and dogs, I like dogs better, cats seem too fickle, also I have a Siberian Huskey, she is so adowable that it is unreal, some cats I like, e.g Reinholdt, my neighbours cat, tigers, panthers, jaguars and lions.
And now to discuss something else, what is your opinion on old martial arts movies, you know, the ones that are badly dubbed.

Cats and dogs both have their merits, dogs are bland but easy to catch, whereas cats are truly tasty but much more difficult to chase down.

@ Randman: Get back to six or twelve strings! Just because they have a longer neck doesn't mean that they are better!

Seriously tho' Neither is better, they are different however. I guess its just a subjective choice. Personally I like most animals, apart from any that happen to be attacking me at any given time. Also ants, for some reason they make me shudder.

Heck no. This. Is. My. Instrument. I picked it up, not knowing much about it, and when I got home to my sheet music (I'm learning actual notes instead of tabs this time around, and it goes well.), opened to "Walking On The Moon", and fell in love with the bass.

I lost the end of a finger several years ago, indirectly this led to me getting my current job and not having much time to play my beloved Antonia the six-stringed seductress of seville, or for that matter the cool, glossy, black, pointy monster I plug in to annoy the whole street.

I have however decided to aquire a mandolin.... I am not sure why but the whim has taken me and i'm sure that there are some nice concerti out there (seem to remember them from studying the developement of the concerto many moons ago). Also jigs reels and other light hearted stuff.

Must now start practicing again....

Not to rain on your parade, but things like that don't happen in real life (I am so glad I did not say RL then, it shows my nerdiness doesn't completely overpower my brain, I can still be saved!)
Anyway, you meet people in real life by establishing a bond of friendship first, that way, even if it doesn't work out, you can still be friends.
The next thing to do is physically ask them out, to the movies or something.
The next step is to repeat the second step until you get to a point where the relationship is strong enough to be called the classic "Boyfriend, Girlfriend" thing.
Weird, I can give advice, but not use it to help myself. :smallconfused:

I met my boyfriend because he was at a gig and standing next to me, we had a vague conversation, I was a bit lonely and so I basically jumped him.

We went out shopping for shoes for him once (different cities, he needed an excuse to come to mine xD), we got some coffee once, and then I went to stay with him for a weekend.

It was a bit awkward at first because of the speed, but I can honestly say that in my 16 years of life I have never met anyone more perfect for me in every way. I'm not gunan sit here and say, WE R GNA GET BABBIES AND MARRIED AND A KAT but he's a keeper, for sure.

And yes, I barely knew him. There was no initial bond of friendship, more a sort of mutual depression at life and a loneliness. But it worked for us. And I feel much better

Sometimes starting from scratch is easier than finding the problem, especially if a virus or worm has made it's way in, but often the problem can be solved by reinstalling whatever program is causing it to crash.

Movies... I can watch a movie alone on TV, i never went to the movies alone, that's more than hollow, that's... hollowowow.

And about monotremes and ice, just picture me with the powers of sub zero, how much awesome than that can you get?

Seeing a movie alone is definitely a different experience, but hollow? What's hollow about it? I admit I rarely go to the cinema, but if a comparison can be made, I go to see plays alone all the time; and I watch movies at home alone more often than not.

It appeals to me because after a powerful play, in the throes of the internal emotional aftermath, my reaction needs to bathe in silence and unfold for a while. Company generally precludes this very sacred state of being. Movies have a similar effect in different proportions.

Also, I like to feel free to cry during plays and movies, which I confess is easier sitting among strangers or alone than in familiar company. Generally. I guess there's some kinds of movies I'd rather see with others. Comedies, for sure. But there's definitely a lot I'd much rather see by myself and I have no angst sitting alone in a cinema or a theatre. Anything serious.

Am I wrong?
No, Walter, you're just an *******.

I agree with this.

I enjoy watching movies alone and watching movies with company, but they really are very different experiences. For me, at least. One is just about the movie, and one is about the outing.

Although I admit, I don't think I would ever go to a movie theater alone. When I watch movies alone, it's usually online.

I agree, you need to experience both! Try to go to a movie that seems good. Bring a friend o don't, it's up to you. I prefer going to movies with others and watching them alone at home. But sometimes I feel the opposite.

I think it boils down to this: when I watch a movie with other people, especially people who've never seen it before, I feel like I'm unconsciously feeling their emotions as well. I'm imagining it from another perspective, and it seems richer to me.

On that note, I'm neurotic about said people actually watching the goddamn movie. If they've never seen it before, and they start doing work on the side and only occasionally glancing at the screen, my eye starts twitching.

Well, something similar happens to me, specially if it is a good movie. And even more if it is a good movie and they dont even give it a chance.

Let's see, good movies I recomended lateley: Metropolis (the original and the anime), adaptation, El milagro de P.Tinto (Awesome spanish movie, AWESOME).

What does this movies have in common? I recomended them to "normal" people, and none of them saw the movies, they either hooked up with a silly comedy or wrongly judged the movie. One prefered to see that ben stiller and jnnifer aniston movie instead of the anime metropolis, another one said about original metropolis "But it is old, how can it be good if it is old?" And about P.Tinto another one said "Spanish? Nah, they never make anythng good".

I was soooo furious, yet all of them comment madagascar 2 as the greatest cultural hit of our time.

Technically, I think you can count Pan's Labyrinth as a Spanish movie, so that statement is pretty much bogus from the outset.

Most non-geeks I know have their imagination completly killed. They cannot watch a movie with elements of fantasy, well, except for harry potter wich they all seemed to love, yet they believe that the lord of the rings was a stupid movie because the ring held too much power.

Lord of the rings (the books) is as rich in conntents and meaning as many entire mythologies!

El milagro de P. Tinto is indeed an awesome movie. I saw it during my semester abroad; our Spanish Cinema teacher gave us previews of that, Tésis, and one other that I can't recall, and gave us the choice between the three to continue on. After just 10 minutes, the class nearly unanimously chose milagro. 'Course, that was several years ago, so I don't recall many details...

::Tries to add El milagro de P. Tinto and Tésis to his Netflix queue, and is dissappointed that the former isn't even in the catalogue and the later isn't available::

Sadly, I am having to retake University Spanish... :smallsigh: Miss a couple of lectures and they just let you have it.

It was oddly exhilarating back when I actually tried to use the meager amount of spanish I had to communicate. Then again, I'm one of those people who's either muddled about something or muddled about how he's grasped it so well. Hence why everyone thought I was a sort of... Pothead Savant... That was back in high school.

Also, I did find it rather wiggy that they were so anti-US and then gobbled up hollywood garbage like it was ambrosia. ... Humans are strange critters. I'd apologize on our behalf, but, well....

Say... Anyone know what a traditional housewarming/apartmentbreakingin present is?

Anyway, as far as the gift goes: I don't know, but if they're of age, alcohol is usually a pretty safe bet. Otherwise, just try to think of something useful that they wouldn't have already bought themselves.

A bottle of alcohol is the most normal. If they don't drink, go for a houseplant (in a pot - not a bunch of cut flowers unless you also bring a vase.
You could go completely traditional and "first foot" them - though that should have been done at Hogmanay - by bringing a loaf of bread, a packet of salt, and a lump of coal.

First Foot? Hogmanay? What are these expressions?

In terms of alcohol, is it red or white wine? I was thinking it's either a handle(That is a way of referring to hard alcohol, right? otherwise, sub in 1/5... or whatever whiskey comes in usually) of bourbon/whiskey or a bottle of red unless one was going for more local...flavor...

Ruts, I'll have you know that I'm practically the only person I know of who hasn't yet smoked that particular herb. Especially since it lives up to its peculiar appellation by growing wild and occasionally closing down campgrounds due to it sprouting up from the ground...

It's just people like to believe that about me... Haven't the foggiest why, really. Since most of them, y'know, actually are around people under the influence enough that you'd think they'd be able to tell.

Hogmanay (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hogmanay).
First-Footing (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/First-Foot)

Apropos herbs and house-warming, Coidzillus, sage is an auspicious choice. Could you acquire some whole dried sage? It is a special herb used in smudging, among other things, and its smoke if not its very presence cleans out stagnant energy. Speaking from personal anecdote.

Well, first-footing would be moot since they didn't start to move in until after the new year.

And now I know what I should be bringing. Unfortunately they're getting a thing of good cider and enough help to get things set up enough for a DND session to occur....

I'd believe it. The mind does funny, scary things at these hours without company.

"How can a man grow ill with sage in his garden?"
Either find very rough, loose dried sage, so that it looks like dried leaves -- ie, not the powder or the fine shake -- and give it in a pouch of some kind, or maybe even a potted, living sage plant. This I prescribe.

So, if you had three eyes, one in the middle of your forehead, how would your glasses work? Would they have a bridge between each lens (as per B), or would they have normal two eyed glasses joining with another 'half-glass' in the centre (as per A):

Please answer, as this is an important question.

Quite frankly, it would have to be the former (B). Having a omnidirectional bridge isn't very sturdy, and can lead to bending sooner than option B.

So, B would be most likely, if not a bit under structured.
