Hey there, as you can see I've decided to make a guide on drawing Oots style avys in flash, seeing as there aren't any. I realize that Flash users are far and few between here in the playground but I decided to make this anyways. Why? Shut up, that's why. Because I love you all.

I'm gonna be using Adobe flash Cs4 for this tutorial, but I learned to use Flash through Macromedia Flash 8, so I might be able to help ya out if you use that version.
Note: I tend to draw the Oots style somewhat different, I prefer more "even" proportions. Eyes of the same size, etc.

Also, you shan't be finding any information on animation here. Since animated avys and sigs aren't allowed anymore, I wont bother going over the many steps of animation. Instead I'll just link you this Bisected8's animation tutorial (http://www.giantitp.com/forums/showthread.php?t=74840&highlight=Guide)

Now then, let's bake that cake! draw an avy.

Settings
First things first, open the properties tab on the right side of the screen and click the edit button, set the size to 120 x 120.

Next, go to the layers section on the bottom left and hit new layer twice.

Your screen should now look like this. (http://i299.photobucket.com/albums/mm296/kroogle1/window3.jpg)

The basic design
Right, well click the circle tool button (or hit the o key) and make a circle, any size really. Hell it could be an oval for all it matters. Make sure your line thickness is 1.5 though. Select the circle and on the properties tab change the size to 45 x 45. Make sure you make this in layer 2

Isn't it just magical?

Next make yourself a rectangle (28 x 34) in layer 1, and place it accordingly.

Female design here, feel free to trace/copy it. I cba to explain drawing that..

Just remember, the head size stays the same on both male female.

Onto the eyes, make yourself a single circle on layer 3, with the size 4 x 6.5, Line thickness 1. Copy paste it right next to itself, a few pixels away. Select the lovely new couple and drag them roughly into the middle of the head. Or to the sides depending on which way your avy is facing, but remember. They should always stay at the same height, unless he's looking up or down.http://i299.photobucket.com/albums/mm296/kroogle1/window7.jpg

Eye see you.

Right, last step for our basic design would be his arms and legs. Make yourself 2 new layers, drag one of them under layer 1 and the other just over it. I would suggest renaming them, as to avoid confusion.

Layers are your friend, they love you.

Next on the list are his walkers and grabbys. I shouldn't have to tell you how to make arms and legs. Line thickness 2.

There! You have your basic frame down. Onto the fun part.

Details
The best part, of making an avy is deciding what it'll actually look like. Is he a powerful swordsman? Perhaps he's a rendering of yourself? Or is he the bloodthirsty leader of the cupcake armada? Alas for this tutorial I'll only be doing something basic, but you get the idea.
(But seriously, Cupcape Armada! To hell with cake and pie!)
Select the whole thing, then hold the left shift key and stretch it as large as you can using the corners. (Holding shift will make it stretch evenly) But remember not to go out of the draw box!

From this point, you're on your own really. At this stage in flash it's quite literally just coloring in the lines. So you'll have to rely on your imagination instead of me here.

Here's how I finished it. (.fla file at the end)

And remember, layers! Every object there has it's own layer. Use them!

Gradients, glows, and other miscellaneous shinys
Gradients.
Make an object of your choice, then select it and click on the window button and click on color.

Click it! :D

All you have to do now is select radial or linear depending on how you want it to look and fiddle around with the slider.

We're done here, move along citizen.
GlowsMake an object of your choice, select it and right click. Click on Convert to symbol. After that, select it and go to the properties bar on the right side and click on this menu http://i299.photobucket.com/albums/mm296/kroogle1/window13.jpg
and select alpha, move the slider left to fade an image out more giving an ethereal/ghostlike/ makes it seethrough, effect.

Or, select an object, convert it to a symbol and on the bottom right you'll see a little piece of paper icon.

Here's the .fla file for that avy I made, so you can edit it or just rip bits and pieces right off it. It's also free game if you want to use it as your avy.

Only works on Cs4 or higher.

Oooh! *Raises hand* I'm a Macromedia Flash user!

Anyways, your guide seems just fine, even though I use Macromedia Flash. Wait. Is that tabs I see? Adobe Flash you say?

Can't really comment on the guide itself, since I don't usually make avatars in Flash. Although I do have it. I just prefer Illustrator.

But, I feel compelled to point this out: it's Adobe, not Abode. :smalltongue:
