View Full Version : Best of Non-Core

I was just wondering what material people think is the best of non-core. These are a few in my opinion.

Race: Shifters - I have been amazed at this race since its publication. I know it's lacking a bit in power due to the need for shifter feats, but between the fluff and a varied shifting ability coupled with getting access to a couple amazing PrC's, shifters are my number one racial pick.

Class: Binder - Inventive, useful, fluffy to the max with huge amounts variability, but loaded with solid crunch. The Binder also can complement several classes very well. And last the dark and slightly creepy feel the class seems to naturally radiate is icing.

Prestige Class: Fiend-Blooded - Want to be a Mage with evil bend? Want to have a floor plan for a back story? Check. Want access to a more fiendish body? Check. Want access to any fire, illusion, enchantment, or necromancy spell in the game? Check. Great fluff and great abilities that rolls into a well rounded spell caster that can fit a evil or dark theme or be easily modified into another idea.

Variant: Shapeshift Druid - The balance it gives to the druid helps cut down on the Druidzilla, but giving a quick 1st level way for a druid to go melee is a great thing. Shapeshift has a bit more skirmish feel to the druid like you could cast then jump into combat pull back change cast change and jump back in. It just feels like more's going on versus wildshape. I also like how shapeshift gives more of a bestial feel to the druid than wild shape seemed to not sure why. Also and a biggie wayyy less paper work.

Monster: Concordant Killer - I've never ran one as a DM or fought one as a PC, but I can't help but get excited over an angelic devil on a celestial infernal killing spree which would cause devils and angels to come hat in hand to high level pc's for help.

Template: Swarm-shifter - Because nothing causes and Oh ****! moment as when the BBEG turns into a swarm of vermin, sand, body parts to either regroup or retreat to return at the prefect dramatic moment.

Book: Heroes of Horror - This book gives great ideas for gothic style campaigns, evil campaigns, lovecraft style of play, and just general classic horror. We can find great base and prestige classes as well as new twist on some classic monsters.

There are several others that I believe deserve an honorable mention, but these are some of the best in my opinion.

Race: Poison Dusk Lizardfolk. Dramatically different from the base ones in fluff and in crunch, but still pretty balanced, and entirely playable at LA+1.

Class: Factotum, hands down. If I was any class IRL, I'd probably be a Factotum.

Prestige Class: Master of Nine. Haven't played it yet, but want to.

Variant: Unarmed Swordsage. Makes monks and ninjas viable again!

Monster: Coatl. Anything taken from Aztec Myth is badass.

Template: Tauric. So much potential, even without trying to break it!

Book: Tome of Battle. For all the hate it gets, it's still awesomely fun to play.

Monster: Coatl. Anything taken from Norse Myth is badass.

Huh? Now I may be unfamiliar with the DnD version of this creature but by name alone I would expect it to be inspired by Mesoamerican myth. "Coatl" is the Nahuatl (aztec) word for "snake" and is part of the name of the diety Quetzalcoatl, "Feathered Snake".

Yep. Hit the nail on the head there.

Race: Whisper Gnome. Kind of cheap, but great for stealthy characters of all kinds.

Class: Dread Necromancer. Can turn any campaign into a horror campaign.

Prestige Class: Master of Masks. It's just so...cool!

Variant: The specialist wizard variants from Unearthed Arcana. Who needs a familiar anyway?

Monster: I've never used them, but the Mind Flayers of Thoon look like they could be the focus of an entire awesome campaign.

Template: The undead templates from Libris Mortis. Lets you make any creature into a mummy, wright, wraith, etc. That's the way undead should be in my opinion.

Book: Complete Scoundrel. I like skill monkeys.

Race: Changelings! Gotta love the bastards.
Class: So much of a tossup. Factotums are sheer gold, Font of Inspiration aside. But Binders have their own special awesome fluff and a half. I also like ToB just because.
PrC: Chameleon.
Variant: Dungeoncrasher Fighter. Hell yes, eat wall time.
Monster: N/A
Template: Dark, I guess? Iono.
Book: Tome of Battle. Tome of Magic.

Just some stuff off the top of me 'ead.

Race: changeling. I know disguise self is easily reproduced and that there are better racial SLAs to aim for, but damn do I ever love being an impostor 100% of the time. It provides so much variety in out-of-combat playing, and I really like variety.

Class: Swordsage. You could build a lot of swordsages and get a wildly different character every time; that's a lot of variety.

Prestige Class: Chameleon. Did I mention I like variety?

Variant: Paladins of any alignment. It just adds a lot more character concepts with so little modification.

Monster: Mind Flayers. If I had to get more specific, I'd say Ulitharids (LoM) are the most fearsome, though Neolithids can be scary, too.

Template: I don't use any templates, but if I did I would always use Dark, for really early HiPS.

Book: Oh dear. My favourite playing book is XPH. My favourite D&D book to read is definitely MMV.

and my favourite ability is Arcane casting.

Hmm.

Race: too many are good, but Warforged stand out a bit.

Class: either Factotum or Warlock.

Prestige Class: Chameleon all the way.

Variant: Spell Shield (?) Sorcerer from Dungeonscape. I know mana shield? Sweet.

Monster: Nimblewright or Slaughterstone Evicerator. I like my blender constructs, and they're pretty cheap to build.

Template: Winged. So many things just get funnier when you add wings. Flying raptors, flying tarrasque, flying whales, flying...

Book: Manual of the Planes, for some reason. It doesn't have anything too particularly awesome in it, but whenever I look at it I just go !

Yeah, I'm Fizban. Don't know how it wasn't taken when I signed up.

Race: Hmm... I generally use core races; can't really think of anything off the top of my head here...

Class: Dread Necromancer. I gotta say, Charisma is my favorite ability score, and the Charisma-based casters can be so much fun.

Prestige Class: Ooh, toughie. Truth be told, I haven't done much with prestige classes outside of core.

Variant: Haven't done much with this either.

Monster: Grisgol from Monster Manual III. It's a junk golem that uses a lich's phylactery as a battery, and when destroyed, its remains drive people insane. AWESOME.

Template: Evolved Undead (LM). It fits my idea of undead becoming more powerful with time. I also like Half-Vampire, from the same book.

Book: Heroes of Horror.

Horror is about provoking instinctive, visceral reactions, so players need to be in a frame of mind conducive to such reactions...it’s fair to say that even the most capable DM is going to have a hard time evoking horror when her players won’t stop giggling at each other, or quoting Monty Python, or making out-of-character puns.

Race: Changelings, probably. But I find that many of the standard recommended non-core races are either silly or cheesy.

Class: Beguiler, hands down. Warlock as a close second, though.

Prestige Class: Most core prestiges suck, so yeah. I like the Wild Soul, personally.

Variant: Shapeshift druid is a big improvement. Some of the wizard variants are nice because not everybody wants a familiar. But frankly many variant classes tend towards the cheesiness (e.g. multiclass between rogue and SA fighter)

Monster: Meh. I make up my own.

Template: Never used them.

Book: PHB2. Too many options there. TOB as a close second, although few DMs allow it around here.

Hard to say, but I will try...

Race: Kalashtar. Every life is a dream within a dream, but theirs more.

Class: Warlock, but Psywarrior immediately after.

Prestige Class: Sublime CHord, Iaijutsu Master immediately after.

Variant: Fighter variants in PHII and Dungeonscape (I love PHII ones for combat reflexes builts)

Monster: Wild Hunt. A fey with CR higer than a Balor or Pit fiend. Wow. So.. Primal?

Template: Love Template. Multi-headed bringed to my players the worst nightmares.

Book: Oriental Adventures (even if Oriental adventures now has benn updated in the complete series, and the excellent Heroes of Horror has the revamped taint mechanic... and for Masharpa you need Psionics )

Race: Most non-core races are on varying degrees of complete stupidity, Warforged being the crown jewel of absolute retartedness. But I think that Gold Dwarves from FR are a more balanced alternative to standard dwarves. Genasi are also quite interesting.
Class: Beguiler, and, from what I've heard, Shadowcaster
Prestige Class: Drunken Master
Variant: The Ranger and Paladin variants from PHB II.
Monster: Hard to say. I don't own any Monster Manuals except the first one.
Template: I'm not generally interested in templates.
Book: PHB 2, probably. Lots and lots of good material. Complete Arcane is, unfortunaelty, 80% rubbish.

Race: I have no idea actually, there are so many cool ones out there.

Class: Totemist is god damn awesome, Factotum is also high on my list.

Prestige Class: Chameleon, or, better yet, a Factotum/Chameleon!
Totem Rager is also very lovable.

Variant: Dungeon Crasher is pretty sweet, but I have had so much fun with the Wildshape Ranger variant as well.

Monster: Ulitharid, because Mindflayers are one of my favorite races, Tsochar because who doesn't like flesh-burrowing worms.

Template: Necropolitan, because being undead is so much fun and becoming one that quickly is even more so.

Book: Tome of Battle, Magic of Incarnum, Heroes of Horror and Lords of Madness.

Greymane

Race: Duergar. Can anyone tell me the combat potential of entire armies turning invisible and then into giants? A true nightmare for any unprepared force.
Blast! They're in the MM aren't they?! In that case, I'd have to say Air Genasi, although I'm quite sad they can't normally fly.

Class: Tough. I'd have to say Beguiler. Rogue-like focus and ninth-level spells!

Prestige Class: Tougher. Ultimate Magus wins out, though.

Variant: Spell points. I prefer a 'mana' system to Vancian magic.

Monster: Phthisic. Because I like the way it sounds.

Template: Death Knight. Although the totally awesome eldritch fire attack is woefully 1/day, keeping your cleric spells despite being godless is fun. And a free mount to boot!

Book: Tome of Battle. I have loved seeing melee classes get better.

I'm a sucker for roleplayability, and i almost never optimize and have to find good reason for choice of class and PRC

Race: I like the golliath or whatever it was called from races of stone. Though i haven't played it, Planetouched are also prettah kewl

Class: Warlock

Prestige class: Hellfire warlock or Seeker of the song

Variant: PHB II ones, all awesome

Monster: Hound Archon (Just because it is THAT ridiculous )

Template: Winged, ever since i faced a flying iron golem, i don't have the book it's in (Can't find it in any of the MM's) but i still want to see if that's even possible

Race: Avariels

Class: Scout takes my cake

Prestige Class: ...tough, Ghostwalker, Tempest, Greenstar Adept, or Duelist.

Variant: ...Wilderness Rogue? Not big on variants.

Monster: I dont know, about a third of MMII and a half of MMIII

Template: Lycanthrope (Lythari), half-nymph, and Warbeast.

Book: Complete Adventurer, MMIII, Sword & Fist

Race: It may be somewhat older, but the best Non-core specieses can be found on Athas. Muls are especially outstanding. Who doesn't want a Dwarf/Human hybrid with boundless endurance? Besides, the Mul is the only half-breed where they made the thing with the hybrid sterility as it should be.

Class: That's more difficult. Spellcasters are mostly more annoying than helpful and most Non-core fighting classes somewhat fail. So what's left is mostly the Scout.

Prestige Class: Frenzied Berserker. It's not only powerful, the Frenzy is also much closer to what Berserker Rage should be than the lame and controled Rage of the Barbarians.

Variety: Gestalt Rules. Adding more depth to a character by broading the perspective makes for much less hidebound stereotype characters. It requires a bit of control though, as it is easy to abuse.

Book: Midnight Campaign Setting. The best setting published for D&D. As a second: Book of Erotic Fantasy, not because of the quality of the book, but because of the uproar it created.

Race: The cultural/climatological variants on the non-human core races. Also, Genasi.

Class: Swordsage. Variety is the spice of life.

Prestige Class: There's a lot of good ones, but I would say Arcane Hierophant is the best for sheer solo casting craziness, though Master of Nine looks neat flavor-wise.

Variant: I think Cloistered Cleric from Unearthed Arcana should be the standard for the class.

Monster: I've always liked Mind FlayersSquid Thingies.

Template: Not a fan of these, though I've considered changing the Petitioner template to allow for advancement and set a campaign in the afterlife.

Book: Tome of Battle.

Race: Maenads. With some work, I managed to turn the basic concept into something I thought was quite cool for my homebrew world.

Class: Shadowcaster. The content for it is rather limited, but the flavor is delicious, and it's got some cool mechanics. I just wish there was a nicer name for it.

Prestige Class: Jade Phoenix Mage. Not for the actual flavor, but how its mechanics served as much inspiration when I made the prestige classes for my homebrew setting.

Variant: Aspect of Nature Druid. At least then it's not good enough on its own for to make an entire class. :P

Monster: Fang Dragon. Say "rawr".

Template: Shade. Another thing I found very useful and cool for my setting.

Book: Tome of Battle. I'm not using the actual classes, but it inspired me for a whole lot of other work.

Race:Warforged. They are badass.

Class: Dread Necromancer. Create your own personal zombie apocalypse. Archivist, curiously enough take a close second.

Prestige Class: Dervish, Malconvoker, Arcane Hierophant, Divine Oracle, Dragonmark Heir, Storm Sentry... so many too choose from

Variant: Gestalt.

Monster: Do not know many monsters

Template: The undead templates make my life easier.

Book: Almost all of the Eberron books, but outside of that, Heroes of Horror.

Race: It's all about the changelings.

Class: Spirit Shaman! It's all the good parts of being a druid without all the things that make it unfun, wrapped up in a spellcaster class that you actually want to take 20 levels of. Plus, free concentration checks. Plus, your spells are given to you by a voice in your head. Close second is the Warblade, which is a simply brilliant bit of game design.

Prestige Class: Soulbow. It takes a kind of meh base class and turns it into something filled with bonus feats and awesome. And Mind Bullets!

Variant: Half-elf Bard substitutions from Races of Destiny. "Now stop being silly, and let's all sit down and have a nice talk about this. No? You sure? Because I said SIT!"

Monster: They're cheesy, but there was something about those undead elementals from Libris Mortis. "Run from the Zombie Air!"

Template: Probably the Dark template from Tome of Magic. Quick and easy way to make an unnatural abomination.

Book: For mechanics, Tome of Battle. For flavor, Eberron Campaign Setting. For just being chock full of interesting and useful stuff, Dragon Magic.

Race: Warforged. Bender always belonged in D&D.
Class: Warblade. Fighters as they always should have been.
Prestige Class: Mage of the Arcane Order. Proper guild wizards. It's practically the faculty of Unseen University!
Class Variant: Shapeshift Druid. Druid (at least partially) decheesed.

Monster: Dire elephant. Dire. Elephant. What more need be said?
Template: Half-farspawn. Because everyhting is better with added eldritch horror from beyond the stars.
Book: Lords of Madness. See above.

Race: Oh boy, a toughie. I'm gonna go with Elan; Psionic entities rule!

Class: Humm, perchance Psion or Warblade or Totemist or Dragonfire Adept or Ardent or Binder or Factotum. I cannot rightly decide. If I had to pick one, I'd say Warblade, but just because it's such a step up from the core Fighter.

Prestige Class: Oh boy... I do love me some Eternal Blades! Also, the Dervish is awesome, if a tad feat intensive. Psionic Uncarnate is just...yea! Ordained Champion kicks ass. Swiftblade is plain awesome! Ultimately, I think I'll give this to Bear Warrior though. I mean, you become so angry you get to be a friggin' BEAR! What's not to love?

Variant: Official WoTC variant, I suppose? Sooo many to choose from. How am I supposed to choose? Many of the Fighter-variants are just awesome (Dungeoncrasher, Overpowering Attack). All the Barbarian Totems are a neat idea (if a bit poor implementation). The specialist Wizard variants really bring the feel of specialization into the concept (the basic specialist Wizard isn't much different from a standard Wizard; Master Specialist and the Specialist-variants really help there). Cloistered Cleric without Divine Power and Righteous Might is much closer to my idea of what a Cleric should be. Shapeshift Druid is indeed more powerful, but I personally find it boring; I'm still waiting for that truly satisfactory Druid-fix that retains the versatility but removes the brokenness. Ultimately, I'm gonna go with Mystic Ranger. Really brings some life into Ranger's spellcasting and makes the class much more interesting to play.

Monster: Ragewalker. Ever since one made a whole level 14 party slaughter one another, I've been in love.

Template: Dragonborn of Bahamut. I just love the flavour, and I absolutely vuw Draconic PCs!

Book: I'm going to have to say Tome of Battle. Ever since getting the book, our games have been so much more fun, especially with healthy dozes of ToB-based homebrew thrown in! You'll never know what the Knight standing in front of you is going to pull next; kinda like facing a Wizard, except now even warriors can be frightening and unpredictable!

Race:

Class: Factotum. Hooray for skillmonkeys

Prestige Class: Too many to have one specific one.

Variant: Thirded, Fifthed, whichever on Shapeshift druid. Especially since it gives you the shapeshifting from level 1 which is what most people who aren't taking druid for the power want.

Monster: I tend to use humanoid with class levels a lot so no listing from me here.

Template: I've had some fun with the half-fey template

Book: Tome of Battle. I feel the system flows very well for melee combatants while giving them more versatility.

Race: Warforged. I always liked how they can actually do something other than melee.

Class: Warblade. I'm a melee junkie. Warblade even makes TWF a decent option.

Prestige Class: Tossup between Bone Knight, Thunder Guide, and Ruby Knight Vindicator.
Bone Knight makes your character a heavy metal album cover.
Thunder Guide probably isn't that strong mechanically, but it sure gives your Indiana Jones a lot of options. Not to mention it actually has "getting novels written about you" as a class feature.
Ruby Knight Vindicator owns. Utterly.

Class Variant: Really not sure on this. Probably Cloistered Cleric.

Monster: Too many to say. The robot ninja Nimblewright is definitely on the list. So is the Nycaloth. The Malebranche is also up there. You just don't see Huge-sized devils very often.
There's also the Thoon Hulk. 9-foot tall cyborg made of illithid parts with GREATAXES for hands? It even has a deflector shield.

Template: Dust-stuffed. There's something creepy about the spy you were hunting suddenly throwing back his hood and turning the key sticking into his eye socket.

Book: Tome of Battle.

Race: Warforged because I love the idea of mass produced soldiers or Elan simply because they excel at immortality better than elves.

Class: Warblade for Melee fun goodness or Factotem for being able to model sudden bursts of genius.

Prestige Class: Definately Bloodstorm Blade, I had so much fun playing one in a level 9-12 game. There's nothing quite as satisfying as criting someone with a dire pick from 30 ft away.

Class Variant: On one hand, I love Dungeon Crasher for making Bull Rush Arschgeil. On the other, the totem barbarians are a lot of fun.

Monster: I can't really say as the campaigns I've played in have involved predominately humanoid enemies.

Template: Lich. Contemplating what ritual is so evil that you become a lich is a lot of "fun". A lot of good memories of a campaign where we were coerced into doing a lich's bidding (after we'd set him free and had him killed so he could aquire his magic item stash... looooong story).

Book: Toss up between ToB and Complete Warrior

Class: Factotum. See my sig for details.

Prestige Class: Incantatrix. You want power? I'll give you more than that.

Variant: Spontaneous Divination. Hey, I've got an idea! Let's make wizards even more broken!

Monster: Not much to say here. I don't have much DM experience, and my experience as a player is limited to races with level adjustments.

Template: Feral. Makes my melee characters even nastier. If it counts, Dragonwrought.

Book: My group now refers to ToB as "Tome of Broken," but I disagree. Probably Spell Compendium, by virtue of giving casters so many ways to rape everybody else.

What about items that people feel like, "Why wasn't that in the rules all along?"

Here's some of those, IMHO, taken (most recently) from the MIC:

- Twilight armor
- Nimbleness armor
- Restful Crystal
- Dispelling weapon
- Quick Loading crossbow
- Transmuting weapon
- Bow of the Wintermoon (or, just some bow enhancement that automatically adjusts to your Strength)
- Crystal of Return
- Truedeath and Demolition Crystals
- Healing Belt
- Scout's Headband
- Sending Stones
- Ring of Communication
- Blessed Bandage
- Map of Unseen Lands
- Runestaves
- Tome of Worldly Memory
- Gloves of Infinite Javelins

(Not to mention a few "Duh!" entries from Dungeonscape: Collapsible Pole, Flour Pouch, Lard, Listening Cone, Rubber Ball.)

And some whose concepts are a little more strange, but which are awesome:

- Mithralmist Shirt
- Greater Crystal of Aquatic Action
- Lash of Sands
- Raptor Arrow
- Boots of the Unending Journey
- Caduceus Bracers
- Ring of the Darkhidden
- Rod of Viscid Globs

Race: Warforged. They rule. A lot.

Class: I'm gonna go with Binder as well. They're just cool. I love the flavor, and they can be really strong if you give them the right push.

Prestige Class: Ruby Knight Vindicator or Shadowcraft Mage win for power, but for fun, I'd probably go for Ruby Knight Vindicator.

Variant: Cloistered Cleric. It's just win. If that doesn't count... I dunno. Spontaneous Domain Casting.

Monster: Hmmmmm. Cadaver Golem

Race: Whisper Gnome (Races of Stone).

Class: Unarmed Swordsage variant, for a viable monklike character.

Prestige Class: Mystic Wanderer (Magic of Faerûn), for CHA to AC.

Class Variant: Cloistered Cleric (http://www.d20srd.org/srd/variant/classes/variantCharacterClasses.htm#clericVariantCloistere dCleric).

Monster: Varag (Monster Manual IV), because of their 50' base speed and racial Spring Attack feat.

Template: Lolth-touched (Monster Manual IV), for +6 STR, +6 CON, immunity to fear, +4 racial bonus to Hide and Move Silently; only +1 LA (but severe alignment restriction).

Book: Complete Scoundrel. Gotta love those skill tricks.
