I'd heard that there was a feat, somewhere in 3.x, where a sorcerer could apply metamagic feats without increasing casting time. Does this feat exist, and if so, from which sourcebook does it come? Thanks in advance!

Thanks! I haven't looked over that book much, so I didn't see it.

While you're waiting to get to level 9 to take this feat, you should consider the Metamagic Specialist alternative class feature (Players Handbook II page 61): you trade your familiar for the ability to apply metamagic rapidly 3 + INT bonus times/day.

It seems Arcane preparation (Complete Arcane) allows sorcerors to "prepare" spells in order to avoid increasing caster time. And the only prereq there is being able to case arcane spells w/o preparation.

I second considering Metamagic specialist. Give up a feat, or give up a familiar?

I 3rd the suggestion for metamagic specialist, if you still want a familiar you can get one with the obtain familiar (http://realmshelps.dandello.net/cgi-bin/feats.pl?Obtain_Familiar,all) feat from complete arcane, this familiar will develop based on your total arcane casting levels (including PRC's) instead of just your sorcerer levels as the standard familiar does.

so you still use one feat but you have a better familiar for the cost.

I tend to take Arcane Preparation, but that's just because I'm fond of using the Mage of the Arcane Order PrC, or using Reserve Feats powered by low-level spells known for higher level effects (Acid Splash and Summon Monster I put in highest-level spell slots for Xd6 from Acidic Splatter and a medium+Elemental at will, for instance).
