You have gathered at the city hall of the town called Duvik's pass. It is a fairly prosperous town located in the Serphentcoil mountains. You have a seat with the others who have apparently come for the same reason, a call for adventurers to solve a problem of some sort that the town was having. Unfortunitly the flier you saw didn't specify what it was.

The Mayor enters and sits behind his desk.

"Greetings" the man says. "I am the mayor-" the man is interrupted by a fit of coughing. He clears his throat and resumes. "Excuse me. I am mayor Christoff Sanders. As you well know, we are looking for adventurers to solve a problem here, though you probably don't know what it is. It started around four months ago with a strange sickness. We lost much livestock first and the elderly, the ill and our children were lost to it. We believe that the source is our well water, which source runs from the mines. Unfortunately this is not the only problem. The young workers of the mine who entered about a half-month ago haven't returned, and we fear the worst. We ask that you help us, and we will reward you. You should see Steffan Doverspeak, you can buy anything you need from him."

[[If you wish to move on, let me know, or you can further talk to Christoff]]

Snorting, the elf wearing a set of leather studded striped with iron bands walks up to the mayor and gives him a hearty thump on the shoulder to embolden the man, not really realizing that Christoff is sick. Unlike most elves, this one is quite doughy with a stomach that has obviously seen more than three meals a day. Interestingly, his armor has stretched to accomodate his girth, with the bands of metal almost looking like a girdle around his ample carriage. His hair as well is unusually cropped short for an elf, and its dark brown hue lies in stark contrast to his pale skin.

"No problem, now that you've got experts here it'll get sorted in no time," he turns to the others and rubs his hands together, "Well, come on! Let's get going, we can all get introduced on the way! The sooner we get on our way the sooner we'll be done."

He pauses in the door-frame, making hurry-up motions with his hands to the rest of you.

The burly orc woman with several scars looks to be thinking for a long time, before saying anything. "Yeah, if something needs smashing in that cave, you can be sure i'll give it to them." She says in a thick orcish accent, and nods in satisfaction of her answer, then looks over at Cysan. "Don't you worry cute stuff, I'm coming." She continued with a wink at him, and walked over.

The skinny, armor-clad elf looked at the muscaler orc woman and the other, larger-than average elf. He frowned his nose ever so slightly. Buffoons.
He turned his attention to the mayor, and greeted him with a friendly smile.
"We, or I, will take care of your problems, good sir. With or without a reward.", he said as he walked towards the door.

"Not so quick," barks a dwarf in the back of the room. He strides over to the doorway on his short legs, as if to block it. He's as wide as a ponjy and covered neck-to-knee in glistening metal scales, each coloureda slightly different earth tone with occasional blue.

"I think we should hear the reward before we go. And if the elf doesn't want it, she can forego her share." His eyes glisten and a grin crosses his face as he glances at the thinner of the two elves.

((Edwin: Yep, I know your char is male. :P ))

Edwin

Sporting an angry glare at the greedy dwarf, Nahel barked back in a quick and decisive manner;"I though I made it clear that the reward was of no importance. Not to real heroes, anyway."

Ignoring the comment questioning his masculinity, Nahel continued:"But maybe you aren't one of such kind, eh?", his eyes glowing faintly blue as he uttered the last syllable.

The dwarf tilts his head and his grin widens. He tries his best not to take the bait...

"Maybe I'm not. Only way to tell is to give me the reward and see if I spend it at the bar or at the temple. Could help a lot of orphans... or a lot of hired ladies. Of course, once you give up your share, you don't have a say in where it goes, do you? So are you sure you don't care about it?"

Glancing at the Mayor, he asks again: "So how much are we talking, your Excellency?"

Edwin
2009-01-12, 10:29 AM
"I think I should hold on to my share. That way, I can direct it somewhere it'll actually do some good."

And not without a little flinch or two in his stern gaze, he looked around the room and added:"And no, consorts do not count."

He smiled and turned towards the other adventurers.

"Consorts count." Edda replies, a little offended. "At least I'm making those boys work for their pay when they see me coming." She continued, proudly.

"100? What are we still doing here? Come on, y'all." The orc lady yelled, her orcish accent shining. She only paused to elbow the skinnier elf. "You don't need consorts, you got me." The half-orc laughed gruffly and winked at him. "I like elves." She clarified.

The beardless blond man shook his head. He usually stayed out of these things, but this group could be interesting. It may make an interesting story in any case... and the mayor obviously needed the help.
"I'll come too." he moved away from the back wall he'd been leaning against. "However much I may regret it later." This is an interesting group.

[[I'm going to assume you're moving on. I assume you're going to want to go to the shop first, right?]]

The shop, located not far from the square is a fairly sized shop, filled with shelves of mostly mundane useful goods of warm clothing, food, pickaxes, torches and the like. On one shelf has a small selection of alchemical goods including healing potions, two each of tanglefoot bags, bottles of acid, antitoxins, and alchemic fires.

Behind the counter is a portly human in his mid thirties, with a fiery red hair and a full but groomed beard. "Welcome!" he booms out. "You must be The adven'urers hired to help us! Come in! I have a pre'y good selec'ion here, I'm sure you'll all find wha' you need."

Ian strides up and gives the shopkeeper a mock punch, meant to be friendly but probably a little painful nonetheless. Given the dwarf's height, the punch lands in the human's big belly.

"We're not adventurers. We're danger negotiation specialists." The dwarf scans the wares, moving right past the shoddy human-made swords and spears and tools. His eyes light up when he sees strings of sausages hanging from the rafters. And salted pig... and lard... and "Mmmmm!" He shoves an uncooked, fatty rasher into his mouth and swallows it nearly without chewing. "Ep, e'll meed mations. Ish duff ish all *swallow* free, right? Provisions for the assignment?"

I'd like to take sausages and cured meat equivalent to "10 chunks of" (3 gp). Additionally, 4 trail rations worth of disgusting pickled objects (2 gp). I'm also going to go to the pub next door and get a two-firkin (10 gallon) cask of ale. It weighs 16 lbs and costs 2 gp. So that's a total of 7 gp - Foolster, would you mind updating my sheet for me?

A small gnome pushes her way past Ian and accosts the shopkeeper.

"Don't pay the dwarf no mind, he don't mean you no harm."

She turns and slaps his hand as he reaches for another sausage.

"There'll be time enough for eating once the task is done."

Turning back to the shopkeeper, she brushes the hair back from her face and smiles.

"Now, as you'll know, we'll be needing some supplies so's we can travel to the mine and ensure it's safe for the folk here in the village. I'm sure you have some provisions that you can spare us, and I'll be sure t' mention t' everyone that you helped us out."

She gives the man a knowing wink.

The portly elf gins at Edda and gives his stomach a slap.

"What's not to like about us pointy ears? I'm just as fast as any one of my race but there's more to love as well."

In the store he grabs multiple armfuls of goods, completely disregarding the negotiations taking place.

"Aha! I love these... that's a good one... should have one of these... can't get enough of that..."

Once his waddling around is done he jams the coin down onto the counter and starts strapping on his new supplies.

Alright, I'm picking up the following: tanglefoot bag x1, alchemist's fire x1, a buckler, 1 more quiver of arrows, a morningstar, 2 sunrods and 1 more torches. That should bring my total to 98 gp and 1 cp.

The dwarf scowls at the bossy gnome, but then takes one sausage-greased hand and tussles the little thing's hair (alternately, ruffles her cap, if she's wearing one). "Aww, you can't reach can you? No need to be jealous... Here!"

He practically has to jump to get a hold of another sausage, but the irony is lost on him. An entire string of the things falls down on him and he tears one off for the gnome.

Seeing Cysan's behaviour, he grins with glee. "Now that's an elf I can share a hole with! What do you call yourself, tall one?"

Staring angrily at both the dwarf and the portly elf, Nahel almost silently mumbled;"Ragtag outlaws.."

He walked over to the counter, put down five silver pieces, and apologized to the shopkeeper on the party's behalf for eating without paying.

"I am sure you'll forgive us, we meant no harm. Now, would it be possible for me to buy a thunderstone or two?"

After wiping his hand on his pants Ian produces coins of his own and pays for his vittles. "Relax," he breathes. "I wouldn't steal."

Nahel raises an eyebrow as the stubby little man hands the money over the counter. Not entirely ragtag after all, he thought to himself.

"Keep the money anyway." he said to the shopkeeper, turned on his heels and walked in the same direction as the dwarf.

Before he stepped over the threshold, he pitched a glance at the others, and with a small smile, he proclaimed:" Wanna get started?".

[[Attitude doesn't change.]]

"I'm afraid I don' have any thunders'ones, sir. We import all our alchemical stuff from the next town, so we don' really impor' much. These tangglefoo' bags are very handy however." he says, picking up one of the bags. The shopkeeper looks at the money accumulated on the counter. "Like I said, the food is free, I jus' didn' like all the grabbing withou' doin' i' all nea' like. I don' take money unearned, but if you insis' I'll take i' from the total of the other gear bought. "Hey there, handsome." Edda says, winking at the shop keep and pulling out a bag of money. "Surely you'd give a discount to a delicate flower like me?" She continues, leaning on the counter attempting to show off her half-orc cleavage.

"Now, darlin', i'll take some of those Tanglefoo' bags you was so proud of, and give meh a new waterskin, and i'd like a few rations for the road, like dim pickle thingy, but for some fun i'll get some of those chunks of meat, cause I need to keep me girlish figur'." The orcish girl belts out, and then proceeds to slowly count out her money.

Bought a Tanglefoot Bag, 10 chunks of meat, 4 rations, and a water skin totaling to too... 56 gold. Leaving me with 45.

Seeing Edda and the others grab food and waterskins Cysan slaps his forehead.

"There I go again, they don't call me "Get the hell away from our rations!" Cysan for nothing. I always keep forgetting to buy food," to the shopkeeper he snorts, "Nonsense! I think we're all old enough to shop as we like, piles or no piles!"

He haphhazardly grabs one jar of pickled onions, one jar of pickled pig ears, a roll of dried sausages, an armful of whatever fruit looks the best 2 rations and a waterskin, again piling everything on the table and practically ricocheting his coin off the counter towards the shopkeeper. He doesn't do this with any ill intent, it just seems as if that's his way of shopping by the wide smile on his face. His purchasing done he follows the dwarf out the door.

"I'll hit the pub too, see if they have a nice skin of ale I can grab," he slaps the burly dwarf on the back, "And Cysan's my name! The six of you (No one knows where the half ling has gotten to) approach the entrance to the mine. A cool breeze drifts down from the towering peaks of the Serpentcoil Mountains as you behold the entrance to the caverns. The frost-rimed ground is littered with tools, picks and shovels, some of which protrude from soft banks of snow. A single darkened shaft leads into the depths of the mine ahead. The dirt path beneath its wooden support structure is covered with stone debris, a few pieces of which occasionally glint with the slightest hint of ore. No light issues forth from the tunnel. Burnt-out torches are strewn across the floor, their brackets torn from the shaft walls. Behind you, the worn road leads back through the crags to the valley below. Aside from the quiet whistling of the wind, complete silence fills the small clearing within the mountains.

Cysan: [[since this won't be effected by the trap]] There are a lot of foot prints here. Many adult sized and some quite a bit smaller. They scuffle all around, and there are larger marks on the ground, like someone laid there. The larger tracks come from the tunnel to the right and head to the room and stop. The smaller tracks go all over to and from all three directions. The tracks all seem pretty fresh, the smaller ones being fresher.

Confused that the words coming out of his mouth aren't being heard by his own ears, Cysan tries again, and much louder.

"THERE ARE LOTS OF SMALL TRACKS ALL OVER THE PLACE, BUT THE LARGE HUMAN ONES GO TO THE RIGHT, WE SHOULD GO THERE FIRST!"

Then he frowns and smacks the side of his head as if trying to dislodge water.

"I SAID, WE SHOULD GO..." a sudden though strikes him and he snaps his fingers, "dammit there must a spell of silence here! Can any of you lip-read? No? Damn! Alright, I'll try to spell it out with my hands then. Pay attention," he waves to get everyone's attention in the silenced room, "Here! Here! Watch me!"

Cysan begins a little pantomime with his hands of big feet moving off tto the right and little feet moving in every direction. He then points to each of the party member and then to the right passage. Pleased that he properly displayed what he had learned he starts moving down the hallway not bothering to be stealthy, since there's a silence spell up and all.

Then, still laughing, he walks off to gather his barrel of ale. He hoists it up on his left shoulder, arm wrapped around it, and struggles to draw his axe with his left right hand. Then he sets out down the right-hand passage that Cysan indicated, using his darkvision to scout ahead for the others.

Cysan just makes it over the pit.

Ian reaches the end of the tunnel into a cavern. This enormous cavern extends upward for at least 100 feet, climbing high into the bowels of the
mountain. Glowing blue-green lichens creep across the rough walls and man-sized stalagmites protruding from the ground in this area, their
faint light growing and then diminishing again every few seconds. The illumination occasionally highlights small flecks of silver, which glitter in
the face of the great western wall of the cave. Several cables hang down from the edge of a wide hollow within that wall. The hollow penetrates deep into the west face of the cavern and begins about 20 feet above where you stand. The air here feels cool and damp.

I'll try, for the third time, to get my actions posted.. meh.

First, I use a move action to move four squares straight ahead. Scaling the pit can be done as part as movement, so here is my climb roll:

From here, I use my standard action to ready a partial charge against the cV creature, the one two squares away from my new position. End turn.

It is now the creatures turns. Half of them fire at Ian, who is their only target. The others are given a command from their leader and is sent to attempt to cut the ropes. They switch to daggers and start cutting.

Cysan's bow attack [[Last round, I missed it, sorry.]] flies by the big creature and hits the wall behind him.

Round N2

You duplicate posted, so I'm going to use the numbers from the first post and assume the second was an accident. One of the four bolts hits, dropping Ian to zero hp - still conscious, but "disabled" meaning he can only take one action (move or standard) per round and any "strenuous" action will inflict a single hp of damage to him.

Since I suspect he does not have long to live, I shall now attempt to play both his "passionate" and "uncivilised" traits to the hilt, in a final stand of glory...

Ian is peppered with bolts, at least one going through his armour and padding to breach his flesh. He grits his teeth and laughs, then hurls his axe at the leader of the creatures on the ledge.

[roll0] (includes -4 range penalty)
[roll1]

Ian remains standing where he is, drawing all fire and hoping his companions use the chance to attack the creatures. (Wasn't someone climbing the rope to the ledge? Shouldn't they be up by now?)

Welcome aboard!

Just to clarify, Ian is at the bottom of the cliff, serving as a distraction. So I presume you actually want to run past Ian and climb the ropes up the cliff.

You can do an accelerated climb (1/2 speed per round instead of 1/4) but it will increast the climb DC. Of course, the climb DC of a rope is like 5 so you should be OK. At that rate you'd be up in 2 rounds maybe - if they don't cut through the ropes first.
