I know there are several dozen of you out there. This is the thread where you argue Fender versus Gibson, get on your soapbox about bands nobody's heard of, and call Mozart a sellout.

I'm a keyboardist/bassist/guitarist (in that order) in several experimental and rock groups. I play a Fender Rhodes through an Alesis effects unit, but I'm borrowing the effect box, so I'm going to start collecting a pedalboard. I also use an old Korg N5 and a Novation Xio. I'm a strictly hardware type of guy; I don't care how convenient laptops and software are, they just don't feel real. I also have an ESP M-100 that I use occasionally.

Commence the discussion!

I play jazz and a lil bit of classical clarinet. I used to anyway—I stopped last year. Got bored with it. I also play baroque recorder. I know, I know, people never take it seriously, but it's a legitimate instrument. It used to be, anyway. :smallfrown:

Also, when people say "I play recorder. I mean, I played it in 3rd grade, and Hot Cross Buns is pretty much the extent of its musical capabilities, right?" I always *facepalm*. :smallyuk:

I'm also trying to teach myself to play acoustic guitar. I've just started with this, so let's see how it goes.

I also play Garageband's musical typing, but I don't think that counts. :smalltongue:

It's kind of funny that I play jazz and classical music, but that's not really the kind of music that I listen to. Although I can appreciate good jazz or good classical music, they just don't really click with me—although I make an exception for some songs that are amazing. I'm partial to Dvořák's New World Symphony, some Vivaldi, most Mozart. And Rhapsody in Blue, of course. :smallwink:

My top three favorite bands I think would be The Hold Steady, Iron & Wine, and The Flaming Lips. In no particular order. Although I have a cycle where I'll suddenly discover a band that I like, listen to them exclusively for a while, then listen to all my music, then find a new band that I listen to exclusively.

Right now the band I'm listening to is Dispatch. I think before that, it was probably Toots & The Maytals.

Eh. I'm rambling. Time for me to shut up. :smalltongue:

It's a Yamaha QY100 (http://www.yamaha.com/yamahavgn/CDA/ContentDetail/ModelSeriesDetail/0,,CNTID%25253D2211%252526CTID%25253D208600,00.htm l)

Many reviewers say the older model, the QY70 is a better deal and a better machine, but it's been discontinued in the United States. I wouldn't know either way.

Music is a BIG part of my life. I play trumpet, baritone, a little bit of other brass instruments, mallet and auxiliary percussion, piano/synth (a little - I'm self-taught), electric bass and a little guitar (also self-taught), and I'm currently trying to teach myself some traditional Irish instruments (I'm okay on the tin whistle, but the bodhran is kickin' my butt). Oh, and I play drum set on Rock Band, but I'm too poor to buy a real set and play. :smallfrown: :smallwink:

I also do a bit of writing (I've written pit music for several high school band programs that have performed across NC and VA), and I'm an occasional instructor at my old high school and a couple other schools. I also do a lot of work as an instructor for my high school's Indoor Percussion Ensemble (http://www.lhsindoor.org/).

So, yeah, I guess I'm a musician. :smalltongue:

Several things:
1) GO NEW WORLD SYMPHONY!
2) Gwyn, you should pick up an electric violin. They're AMAZING. Also, SG ftw.
3) Ah, the QY100. I hates Yamaha so...

1) Yamaha's synths, are, frankly, subpar. The MMOs and MMs are poorly made, and their flagship synths are dramatically overpriced.
2) Their guitars are dreck. That's all I have to say.

Also, I'm a big fan of smaller corporations in the music world. Yamaha, Korg, et cetera, have their names going for them, whereas Novation and Clavia Nord have to build great instruments to be recognized.

4) RTG, what kinds of instruments do you use?

Ah, let's see...

-Two trumpets - my old one a Bach student model, and my main one is a Bach Stradivarius light-weight model with a reverse lead pipe and a #43 bell (I think - it's been years since I worried about specifics). I've also got a brand-less Indian-made flugelhorn I got from eBay, but it's TERRIBLE. :smalltongue:

-My baritone is a cheap brand I've never heard of before. It's got some German name I can't remember. I'll have to go look it up.

-My keyboard is an old, beat-up Casio I got for Christmas several years ago. Working with the Indoor group, though, I get to play with a fancy Korg synth and some other REALLY nice electronics, plus some nice percussion stuff (including a vibraphone that's literally one of like 12 in the world, since some DCI drum corps commissioned them, didn't like them, and sold them all off). We also found in the band storage room an awesome old Fender Rhodes Mark I (http://www.fenderrhodes.com/models/mark1a.php) electric piano that had probably NEVER been played. Haven't gotten a chance to break it out, yet, though, but I've got my eye on it... :smallwink:

-My bass is Squier P-Bass beginner's-type thing - I got it in a kit with a nice little Fender amp, all the cable I need, a tuner, and stuff like that. The guitar I taught myself on was my cousin's old brand-less Hello Kitty electric, but she sold it so I can't really play anymore.

-My tin whistle is a standard whistle in D made by Feadóg Teoranta out of Ireland. I got it at some souvenir stand in the NC mountains, so I can't imagine it's a fancy brand, but it's been good for me. My bodhran doesn't really have a brand, but it's a cheap one I got my local store to buy for me.

-I also just remembered another instrument I own but haven't played much - a Meinl brand cajón (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cajon). It's basically the one in THIS VIDEO (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=v-IMARby9gA), but without the added pick-up and mic. I haven't gotten to use it much, but I think it's probably one of the coolest instruments EVER.

I just know from helping students haul it around for the last several years that it's about 6 feet long and about a million pounds. :smallyuk:

[EDIT: Wait, now that I think about it, I can't remember if it's a Korg or a Roland. I THINK it's a Korg, but the Roland name sounds familiar. Hmm. :smallsigh:]

I've been pushing the director for years to get something new and cool when it finally dies, but I don't know what to get. I'd REALLY like to see a keytar instead, so we could hook it up to an amp via one of those wireless doohickeys and have someone march the keytar.

I reached grade 5 violin, probably could've got further if I'd a) Actually practiced and b) Done my grade 5 theory. In year 12 I switched to the viola and turned out to be better at it. However I'm better at singing than either. I sing tenor in 3 choirs now and have a 3 octave vocal range without falsetto.
I also arrange songs for barbershop quartet or choir. Occasionally I try to compose things, but usually I don't get very far.

Oh, and I have yet to prove that I can't play the bass guitar.

I'm a Guitarist, I own 3 acoustic guitars (one of them a restored Egmond guitar, original Dutch brand OP) and two electrics, both Epiphones. My favorite is the Epiphone Casino, one of the original epiphone models. It suits my rockabilly style quite well. I also have a Yamaha psr210 keyboard at my parent's house I used to have lessons on... didn't stick with me, my keyboard skills have gradually deteriorated to a very low level of semi-competence. in addition, I have a ukelele that's missing a string a broken kazoo and a harmonica.

In my punkpop days I used a Boss OD-3 overdrive pedal and a Dan-o-Wah as effects... not much else

in my house, I have also a Gibson L7 copy by Ibanez (Gerinez) and my brother just made an awesome electric guitar from scratch and some loose parts of a donor-guitar... shaped like some weird hybrid of a Rickenbacker 4001 and a Gibson Explorer.

I've played violin for basically as long as I can remember. I mostly play classical stuff (my favorite genre) although recently I've begun to play some "alternative" genres.

Mandatory Viola Joke:
A violist, tired of being teased by the other musicians decides to quit the viola and learn violin. He walks into a shop and asks the owner if he could purchase a violin.

With an incredulous eye, the shopkeeper raises an eyebrow and asks, "You're a violist, aren't you?"

Shocked, the violist nods his head and asks, "How did you know?"

Shaking his head, the shopkeeper says, "Sir, this is a fish-and-chips shop."

Played alto sax from 5th to 11 grade. Was pretty good, but never practiced enough.

I doodle on keyboard, but I'm not good enough to play a full piece all the way through, so I mostly compose in MIDI after figuring out the notes on the keyboard. Been using that and the N-Tracks software to try to record some full songs. We'll see what I ever come up with.

You can fit more beer in a viola

My housemate is a violist...

As for me, I'm a guitarist, with a bit of bass, mandolin and harmonica on the side. I also own one of those racks so I can be even more irritating. Also a bit of a songwriter, I write myself and also chair our Uni open mic evening which is great fun.

The only advice I can give about stomp boxes is that remember expensive doesn't always equal good, you can get some nice sounds out of budget stuff, the danelectro mini range is particularly good quality/value. Oh, and ebay is good for picking them up too.

Hey, Chumley, you asked a while back about the keyboard my indoor group currently uses and, well, I FINALLY made it back to a rehearsal today. A Kurzweil PC88 (if I remember right), which they don't make anymore; they DO have the PC2 (http://www.kurzweilmusicsystems.com/Product.php?id=45), though, which is pretty similar as far as lay-out, but is probably higher-tech.

Yeah - it's a hassle to move around, but it sounds great. I don't know how long the band program has had it, but we've used it continuously in marching band AND indoor percussion since at LEAST 2003 or so.

The only problem is that I don't think it has a good "Choir Aah" sound (as most keyboards label it), so I think we're actually going to rig up a whole keyboard "pod" with the Kurzweil, the crappy Casio (for the sounds and stuff the Kurzweil doesn't have or the player doesn't have time to switch to) and one of those little boxes with several pads you can program to play all sorts of sounds. (Our indoor show is based on music by The Mars Volta, so we've got "crowd sounds," police sirens, and all kinds of other neat effects to play.

Well, unfortunately, with copyright laws and all that we can post any audio, videos, or anything from the show. :smallfrown: The general gist, though, is that the show is on the theme "The Five Stages of Grief," with all the music coming from The Mars Volta's "De-Loused in the Comatorium." The first song (Intro, Bargaining, Denial, Anger) uses the songs "Inertiatic ESP," "Eriatarka," and "Take the Veil Cerpin" (I think - there might be others), the second (Depression - the "ballad"/front ensemble feature) is "Televators," and I'm not sure about the last song (Acceptance). We've actually got a great group, the music is well-written (even if I don't really care for The Mars Volta), and I think when all's said and done it's be a really cool show.

If you want to see it, though, you'll have to make it to a WGI indoor percussion show (in Richmond, VA or Spartanburg, SC) in February/March or WGI World Championships in Dayton, OH, in April. We're also doing some local shows in the Atlantic Indoor Association circuit, but I don't remember where all those are. Either way, chances are it's too far for you to make it (though I don't know where you're from, so maybe no.) Otherwise, I think you can get some kind of membership thing to watch some videos online (on wgi.org), but I'm not sure if it includes whole shows, if they film every competition, or if they even include every group when they do it.

I play mainly Electric Guitar.
I also have a violin, which I never got round to learning, a real shame. ._.
I would also like to learn the Keyboard, and the Hurdy-Gurdy.

Well, if you already know music theory to a degree, keyboard is relatively easy to pick up. What kind of genre are you interested in playing?

Yes Theory help a lot... as does ear training if you want to figure anything out the best i've ever done is i figured out the first theme to Fur Elise by ear. Howerver I'm so poor at piano i can't play the whole piece (I've since gotten music) i have issues playing with both my left and right hand at the same time, this probably stems from the fact i cannot read bass cleft. Among my goals however is to be able to play Moonlight Sonata (my all time favorite classical peice)... all three movements, so i figure in about a century and a half i might get there. Anyways enough rambling

Classical, rock and Metal.
I find Metal and classical riffs very similar actually.

And actually, I forgot 90% of my musical notations reading ability since I started guitar about three years ago.
(TAB's and chords 4 teh LULZ. :smalltongue:)

I did learn keyboard in my old school, and I remember some songs etc, but the actual theory behind it (mainly notations) I forgot most of. A shame really, I regret not keeping up with my violin either.

I had the same problame. I was perfectly fine on guitar, but on piano, I found it very difficult.
Even to this day, I have to play the two part of the blue's seporately or with another person. :smallsigh:

I'm a Drummer/Singer! Like Phil Collins or Whatever the hell the dude from the Eagles name is! I've been playing the drums for about 9 months. I've been singing for years, but somewhere around there I hit puberty and my voice went down a few octaves. Went from sounding like me mum to me pop. Luckily though, my voice for the most part has become adjusted to singing again. I'm planning on taking my musical ventures to a professional level, so next year I'm going to start taking classes for voice at my school, equaling 6 different musical activities I'm doing in or out of school.
