Random Banter welcomes you to... Random Banter

Okay, check this out. This is place where you discuss topics that deserve to be brought up, but don't deserve their own thread. It is a place of fun, but also rules. Don't break said rules, kapeesh?

Seriously, don't break the rules. You oughta' be careful cause... things break... it would be a shame if someone were to set fire to those nice paratroops, or if those tanks broke...

No, wait. This is silly. The entire premise is silly.

The rules, as such they are, are spoilered below for your convenience. View them, or else.

1. Spam. For the purposes of RB, one word posts are generally considered spam. Likewise, posts that are nothing but *actions like this* are also be considered spam. Remember that the quality of the post's content is much better than the speed of your response.

2. This isn't the Play by Post or Town forum, nor is it the Silly Message Board Games or Structured Games forum. Please avoid continuous roleplay or mock battles and fights such as the "competition for control of the universe".

3. If it's already a thread, don't bring it to RB. RB has such a huge range of subject matter even restricted to the little snippets that probably don't warrant their own thread, it doesn't need legitimate thread topics cluttering it up as well. The exception to this is to bring something that is off-topic from one thread, but on-topic for RB and the subject doesn't warrant a thread of its own.

4. Don't advertise other threads in RB. Just because these new threads move at speeds more appropriate to a message board than an IM session doesn't mean you need to come over to RB and brow beat people into posting in your latest brainchild.

5. Please don't post single line posts alerting us to your current status -- as in "I'm back." This is Random Banter, not "How to stalk Random GitP forum members."

6. Don't poke, kick or bump the thread. It will move at whatever pace it wants to. Also, please refrain from Captain Obvious comments akin to "My, the thread is fast today."

7. Random Banter can only be as good, or as entertaining, as you make it. Demands to be entertained will fall on deaf ears unless you can add something more meaningful to the conversation.

8. As this is a public forum, where the current topic is nicely recorded for you, and not a conversation where you could have missed the beginning, please refrain from asking something to the effect of "What's the topic?". Please take the time to read up a bit first.

9. Thread Creator must include the words "Random" and "Banter" as well as the thread #. Try to be concise as well.

10. Every post should contain two visible, legible complete sentences, Subject and Predicate. C'mon, make your old English teachers proud.

11. Remember, Random Banter is not your IM client. If you want to have a back and forth discussion with just one person, look in their contact information for IM details.

12. Whenever a new thread is created, all "first post", "first page", and all posts of that nature will be deleted by the administrators. Please avoid doing this, as it is frustrating for them to deal with one-lined posts like this.

13. Double-posting is not your friend. We have edit buttons for a reason.

As stated above, this thread is for random discussion, not random chit chat. That is to say, this is a forum, not your IM client. People have set up an unofficial IRC chat thingy for that sort of thing. Not only will you not annoy the people here, you will also help increase the popularity of the IRC chat.

Our previous topic, you say? Oh, it was... a mystery!

In other news, I personally have to agree, at least partially, with the idea of graveyard shift being "soul-crushing" (I don't think it literally crushes, or even harms, my soul, but the term stands), at least mine.
I not only work nights, i work through the whole weekend. I barely get to see my friends anymore. I manage to see some people Sundays when I go to church, but not much else. Shoot, I barely even see my family.
That right there makes it worse. :smallannoyed:

Yeah, that's what I was thinking. Not so much the actual hours or time of day or length of time served...

But the isolation... It scares me now. I used to be able to just sit in my room for days on end doing nothing but reading. Now... Now I start to fear the shadows and loneliness is my bete noir. :smallfrown:

Damned puberty :smallmad:

Also, I am strictly unlovable, Alleine, so it's all good.

Eh? I think I could totally pull the graveyard shift. I might get extremely pissed if people bug me, but I wouldn't mind the loneliness. If loneliness like that mattered to me at this point, I'd be a gibbering wreck.

But working weekends as well? Meh, I likes me my weekends.

For me it's the fact that I hardly ever get to see friends. I don't need to see them everyday or something, but when they're getting ready to go to a movie, I'm almost always like "sorry, I have to work", or "sorry, I have to sleep now, so I can stay conscious on my drive to work and such". And when my church group does fun stuff, stuff I used to be able to do, and I can't anymore...gah.

I just had a strange thought. I know I'm not the first to think about this, but...

Ever wonder why 'racism' is considered a bad thing whereas 'feminism' is (generally) considered positive? I mean, from the construction of these words I can see where it'd be easy to misinterpret the word 'feminism' as being anti-woman.

Perhaps the problem stems from a lack of a better word for the ideology behind the women's equal rights movement. I mean, what other word would you use? Gynophilia? Sounds kinda...squicky.

Um...

Maybe because the negative term is sexism, and it came to mean, like racism, prefering one group?

-Ism means something specific, like someone getting hung up on a topic or something something screw the dictionary. it doesnt necesarily mean something bad.

And just take one look at those damn feminazis, and you'll see that feminism is still not all that positive... >>

Cant we just all be equal, guys?

Coidzor
2009-01-12, 08:33 AM
Humans have this weird tendency when it comes to balancing things to overreact in the opposite direction of what's currently being done after the tactic of underreacting and ignoring the situation fails them.

It's almost like a societal level of the Aristotleian mean....

Jjkaybomb
2009-01-12, 08:41 AM
I'm sure the movements start by just trying to balance, but then there are those that take it way too far. And then by that point the momentums enough to just keep the ball rolling... Though I've heard it compared to a pedulum more.

Either that or they're not satisfied with thier after-victory boredom and want something more to do and bring up. Thus was born the feminazis...

We just dont know where the balancing point is, and we probably never will get there XD

Cant we just all be equal, guys?

Well, that is the main point of feminism. I suspect that those you refer to as 'feminazis' are a) primarily a creation of the media as part of the backlash to the Second Wave feminists and b) mainly angry because they have realised that despite a hundred years of the sisterhood women are still not equal to men in:
- pay
- political representation
- representation at the boardroom level of companies (or schools, universities, hospital trusts, other public bodies)
- childcare
- reproductive rights
and so on.

But, I don't want to talk about this here. (The political is personal, and the personal is political, but giantitp dislikes the political. So.)

Coidzor, you're back. How many cats own you, then?

To not bring up the political aspects of Feminism, I think the "Feminazis" are the ones that push for past "being equals"...which doesn't mean equal representation. It means that equal consideration. If only 20% a group of people qualified to be in a committee/board/job are women, then it's no one's place to pad it to meet a certain percent.

Depsite having worked where I do for the past three years, I make (on average) $0.75 less per hour than the females that have been there for less than a year. It's a grocery store, so being more qualified doesn't really come into it. I will admit that there's one female manager and 5 males, and one female was barred from management despite being qualified...but that's because the current female manager is a little territorial; I believe the words "I don't care who gets the job as long as it's not a woman" were said.

On reproductive rights...I thought it couldn't really happen without your half of the species; did I miss some big press conference?

I know you don't really want to talk about it because of political aspects (I don't believe it is unless you talk about the actual movement), but feel free to PM me...I'm especially curious on the last point.

From a construction point of view, though, that wouldn't really make sense. Sexism doesn't mean anti-sex or anti-gender. Racism doesn't mean anti-race. Therefore, why would feminism mean anti-woman?

And, as someone pointed out, -ism (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/-ism) doesn't denote whether something is good or bad.

Is existentialism bad? Is it anti-existence? :smalltongue:

But yes, the English language is a strange mistress.

On the subject of cats...I've got two!

AND, the new Google favicon bothers me. It's too colorful! And, as someone pointed out, it's same colors and order of the Windows logo (just rotated a little bit).

Let's see, none personally, but through my family we have... the three cats from where I grew up that we took with us when we moved (we'd had more but had to find homes for them with the distance we had to travel and could really only take the three), the four cats that have followed my dad home while he has been walking the dog, hmm... the five cats remaining from the eleven from the two litters that happened due to my dad getting sick and distracting from two spayings that were needed.

3+4+5 = 7+5 = 12

So right now it's looking like 12. I think the highest number of cats I've had has been the about 18 after the kittens were born and before we could get them spayed and adopted out.

...I have a couple of subjects to chime in on...

First is feminism, it's done most of it's job as far as I can tell. Then again, I havn't worked for years, when I did I was favored and had the most annoying (female) co-worker. She would always try to tell me that the only way both sexes will ever be equal is if we get a week off each month paid, if we get preggers we get ten months off paid and on and on. It kinda urked me. I believe that hiring a woman can be risky. After all, almost ALL women can get preggers, and that means in a few months, they will be unable to work. Most women have stronger emotional attachments then men, making farther problems. I want equal opportunity, we have it, so what if equal representation has not happened. I find that girls like me are the reason, I'm happy with my wonderful hubby taking care of me. /rant

Let's see...I have one cat, it's my Mother-In-Law's cat. I hate that Cat...but I promised I'd take care of her after my mil went to the nursing home..

Also, Shirts. Discuss.

Yeah, I once wrote an essay on zombification (Voodoo). How to do it and how to avoid it.

My fondest memory (short of all the Silent Hill ones I wrote...) was one I wrote for a book that was a prequel to Jane Eyre. Now, Jane Eyre is bad enough...but this book was worse. It was essentially dedicated to giving Freudian Excuses to a character in Eyre that is, to be blunt, a homicidal maniac (makes at least two attempts on other character's lives that I can recall). What did the Excuse boil down to? Simple, the poor woman was utterly and totally abused, neglected, and otherwise beat up by every man in her life. But especially by her then husband, one of the major characters in Eyre.

So, thinking "Fair's fair" I wrote an essay not only tearing down this book, but using it to establish a set of Freudian Excuses for the other character. Most fun I've ever had writing an essay.

I am of the opinion that woman have the choice and opportunity to pursue any career or whatnot that a man can, however in some cases one or the other gender will get preferential treatment from employers - in specifics mind, not in the general case - I can only really think of silly examples though, I mean testicular surgeon or midwife or whatever.

It will never be the general case where an employer or whathaveyou is completely unbias because a lot of people are bias regardless of what you tell them.

I would also point out that in some cases the under-representation of a specific gender can be statistically uncertain or in some cases due to the preference of a gender against the job. For instance, I'm reasonably sure there aren't a majority of male nurses upon the population data.

Or, to support my first claim there, if only two in ten of a governing body is female while it is a statistical improbability it could still quite easily be the case it occured by random chance. Case in point: never trust anyone else's statistics. Ever.

Wasn't so much that it was a bad idea...the insane character was somewhat underdevloped. It was that the author just took the easy way out and just blamed it on the man, apparently without realizing that if you're going to say "well, she was made that way!" then you can just as easily point to everyone else's past and say "so were they."

What makes it worse was that the woman was creole (half Caribbean, half white) in Victorian England. You don't need to just blame the white guy, her heritage alone would've sufficed (as it stood the only attention her heritage got was quickly over-shadowed by the the attention her husband got...:smallsigh:)

Which would surely only make us equal if men got a week off work every month. Which they don't. Who needs a week off anyway? If you physically can't work, somethings up...

As for pregnancy, if anything parental leave is skewed terribly towards women. Paternity leave is only a couple of weeks compared to the six months or so women get as maternity leave.

Merely considering the topic is enough to get you labeled a feminist. As always, it's fun to turn this back on the person who started the topic, no matter how discriminatory their point was. Daub in some deliberate stupidity and a "why did you bring it up then?" argument. Fun.

For all the wistful suicides I read about, no one, not one, has said anything like "I just saw/listened to/read X about suicide and omigod, I thought, they're right and I'm going to do it too".* The last whiff of celebrity copycat suicide was back when most of you were still suckling--why does the myth persist?

The Grapes of Wrath has such a monolithic, depressive tone, it's practically propaganda, and I don't like reading long works of opinion. If you can't express your opinion within the confines of a long essay, you've spent too much time defending it, and probably not enough time examining it.

Racism doesn't mean anti-race.

Except that it does:
rac⋅ism
1. a belief or doctrine that inherent differences among the various human races determine cultural or individual achievement, usually involving the idea that one's own race is superior and has the right to rule others.
2. a policy, system of government, etc., based upon or fostering such a doctrine; discrimination.
3. hatred or intolerance of another race or other races.

Racism - discrimination on the basis of race.
Feminism - discrimination on the basis of femininity.

But, whatever, it was mostly just idle musing anyway.

New topic!

The last whiff of celebrity copycat suicide was back when most of you were still suckling--why does the myth persist?

Why does any myth persist?

In some cases, it may be because some people find it emotionally satisfying to believe the myth (e.g., crime doesn't pay). In some cases, believing the myth helps the world seem more orderly and therefore more bearable (e.g., good/bad things come in threes).

@^: But racism means racial intolerance directed towards other races (or even your own race). My point is, it's a specific race or races that it's directed towards. "Race" doesn't denote any specific race. Thus, racism isn't anti-race. That's too broad.

I still need a good title for mine. Soon, too, since I'm around 2/3 of the way through it.

Of course, after that comes the rewrite with the new idea...so I may have a while yet.

How about Scribblings of a Madman?

Cristo Meyers

Indeed. I c... err... Lol'd... yeah... Lol'd... :smallamused:

Nice little snidbit. Probably would work better as a short story first though, just to work out the balloon animal fighting rings properly...

""Alright, we know you're in there! Come on out!" Bonzo yelled into the megaphone. They'd spent weeks running down lead after lead on this balloon-animal ring, and now they finally had 'em cornered. "We've got the place surrounded! Come on out and noone has to get pied!"

No answer. Chuckles squeeked his horn worriedly.

"I know, kid...somethin's not right."

The first pop drove the point home.

"They're poppin' all the animals. Get in there!" The sound of rapid footsteps drowned out the popping, but they were too late. Inside all they found were little pieces of balloon, it was grisly. Chuckles couldn't take it, started throwing up right there. "It's ok, kid, let it out. Seein' stuff like this never gets any easier...""

""Quite the scene we've got here, Bonzo." It really was, custard and clown shoes everywhere. Whatever happened here, it must've been big.

But Bonzo wasn't interested in that, he was busy with their only suspect. "What went down here? Come on, buddy, talk!"

The suspect yawned dramatically, and silently, and leaned against an invisible wall.

"What do you want I should do with this one?" The beat cop asked.

Bonzo smiled. "Take him with us. A mime is a terrible thing to waste."

Come on eileen rocks.

I went to see Toto in 2007, they camed to Uruguay, it was awesome! They played a faster/rockier version of hold the line. They opened the show with gypsy train and finisjhed with Africa.

In other news (I think this should be my catchphrase :smalltongue:)...

...I'm on my first playthrough of Cave Story, and right now I'm at the "hidden" version of the last cave. Hidden = insanely difficult. Since all my guns are at level one, I figure I'll just use the nemesis the whole time and try to avoid leveling up. So, this works out ok.

But then I die EVERY TIME when I get to that red demon boss guy who throws stuff at you. It's not that he's really a hard boss...I just have NO HEALTH by the time I get to him. :smalltongue:

Sorry, Phase! :smalleek:

It's not really spoilers, though. Nothing plot-related. All you know now is that you have to fight a red demon guy. He's really just a mini-boss.

Anyway, I just killed him...and then somehow died right after. :smallconfused:

But right now I'm just frustrated, because in a bunch of playthroughs I had full health right until right before the boss. I lost almost all of it trying to boost up in a place with spikes, but it was too high and I ended up hitting the spikes.

Then I realized that I was just hitting boost too soon, and I needed to jump as high as possible before boosting.

*facepalm*

But yeah, Cave Story is really nifty game. Apparently the same guy made, well, everything. The sounds, the music, the graphics, the gameplay, everything. I'm impressed. :smalleek:

Do you have a Level Three Machine Gun? That would help a lot.

All your guns get reset to level 1 at the start of the final cave (if you're on hard mode). You can get some experience for it, but it's a little tricky...I'm trying to kill things with Nemesis (gets worse as it levels up) and then switch it out for the machine gun to level it.

I just died at the very last corridor before a save point. :smallfrown:

Ah, well. At least I know how to do everything now.

Despite the frustrating difficulty, it's still quite fun. And it might not even be that hard—I tend to be a pretty terrible gamer in most regards.

Cats. Several of them... Most of them are nice. Some of them kill me others kill each other. x.x

They have to be in the same sort of field, so it could be 'Spoken Language in Parodies' or 'Spoken Language in Supervillain Films' etc.
If I can work Dr. Horrible into my E Lang courswork it means I'll have written two courseworks on geeky/not - common popular knowledge.

Supposedly, the books only cost $60 total. The catch is that I will need to get them by next week and I don't think the school has them.

peachy...:smallsigh:

And I thought I had air-headed professors...least the wannabe beat-guys managed to not screw-up the booklist after the class had already started...

I learned last semester to buy my books after classes start. In two classes we needed to buy access to websites that had the book on them already, so there was some wasted money there. Another class the teacher wanted us to get a different book instead of the listed one.
Needless to say, I was pretty upset. I won't make the same mistake this semester though.

Our school will let you return books until a week or two after classes start, full refund; you just need your receipt. Of course, the prices are ungodly high to make up for it ($60 for a workbook/text that's inhouse, and it's literally under 200 pages in a 3 ring binder).

Some teachers are cool though, my Math book (authored by the teacher) is sold for $10 at the local print shop because he refuses to publish it so we can be charged over $100 for it.

Koorly: What are your main criteria for what to pair with Dr. Horrible? And what do you have in mind as the direction of the comparison/contrastion-clashion?

Cadet is always a weird word to me. I'm not sure why. hmm...

My aunt was a costume designer and maker for that band for two years!

In other news:
Koorly plans to do a segment of Dr. Horrible's Sing Along Blog for her spoken language coursework. What would you suggest you compare/contrast it with.
First one was Pratchett; second is Dr. Horrible, if I can find something to do alongside it.
So halp?

Could you do another parody? Compare and contrast with Thufir's H.M.S. Ship-a-more. :smalltongue:

Speaking as a textbook store manager, the textbook store probably isn't making that much money off your textbook. They have to keep prices LOW in order to compete with Amazon and Half and students who bought the book last semester.

The one you want to blame is the publisher. Those are the guys who charge 130 dollars for a "new" edition that has only 7% changed from the previous edition.

I can do anything as long as it can be linked to it in some way. Heck, I could even just do a musical and call it: 'Spoken Language Coursework On Musicals From the 1950s and 2008' if I wanted to.
And as far as comparing and contrasting it's not that as much as being able to 'feature spot', explain why this is so and then perhaps compare/contrast to how Text B does with the same feature/does a similar effect with a different feature.
But I really want to do a parody kind of thing. Or compare the Dr. Horrible parody with a 'straight' version of that genre.

Spoken language. And it has to be from a source that we can provide (in this case) links for/sites/place where we got the source from.

I know it's not all the store's problem...I did mention that if my math book were to be published, it'd jump from $10 to over $100. However, I know it's a $20 markup for activation keys if I were to buy them at the store vs. pay through the site. I've found amazon to be quite a bit cheaper than the store (in some cases the books were half the price new, and in some others, I only saved a few dollars); however, I expect them to jack the prices of certain, more commonly used books, and I'll pay if it'll help keep tuition down. I have a problem with the store charging $60 for an in-house binder that couldn't have cost more than $10 to print.

Our store actually just refuses to buy back back half the books because teachers'll change it. The buy back policy states they will buy back at "wholesale value" if the book isn't going to be used again, or if inventory's full (I have it right in front of me), but in practice, they just tell you sorry about your luck unless you challenge them.

Hmm. So you're only drawing upon the spoken lines rather than the lyrics then?

Hmm... How do you feel about the Pirates of Pensance or whatever it was?
