Midget on a Horse

I am proud to present Christopher of Hastings' Midget on a Horse!
After a thousand years the epic tale of this ancient tapestry can finally be told!

http://i722.photobucket.com/albums/ww230/RufusChamberlain2/MidgetonaHorseBanner3.png

I will be posting one piece of the ancient tapestry per day, and I will edit this post with them. So for the next umpteen days, enjoy Christopher of Hastings' Midget on a Horse saga!

Pretentia aside, this is (for the purposes of this forum, but I prefer to think of it as a continuous work) a webcomic I'm doing for a laugh, in the style of the Bayeux Tapestry, which many of you should be familiar with, if not, Wikipedia and Google are your friends (hopefully) and will help you there. It's just my take on this sort of thing, which will be sometimes funny, sometimes ridiculous, but tongue-in-cheek throughout. Anyway, enjoy!

Currently up to Piece 84 of the Second Saga!

Well this is new.. and different.. and really, really weird.
Sounds like it could work, I'll be watching this thread. :smalltongue:

Cheers!

By the way, if anyone has any questions, ask away and I'll add an FAQ to the first post.

Huh.

Can't really judge it without a comic, but this seems like it has the potential for much hilarity.

I will be watching.

...

That sounded less creepy in my head. :smalltongue:

Here's piece 2 of the tapestry, where the narrative begins!

That's either a very small horse or a very tall midget.

Very small horse, more like a Shetland pony.

Anyway, Piece 3!

I'd just like to say that the term "midget" is offensive for us vertically challenged people!

And just for the record, "little people" is equally demeaning. :smallannoyed:

Dispite offendedness, I shall continue to read these strange comics.

Seriously, not cool.

But go ahead if you really want to then.:smallannoyed:

I like how it's very medieval authentic. I'm not too sure if the rider counts as a midget. He looks to big on the horse. It kind of bugged me. Aside from that, I like what I see. Looks like something with much potential.

Fifty-Eyed Fred

It's a small horse. His name is merely descriptive, as you'll find with many characters, such as Ultimate Power Archer:
http://i448.photobucket.com/albums/qq207/RufusChamberlain/MidgetonaHorse04.png
So, the plot begins to take form! And yes, that is dialogue. Hopefully it's not too hard to follow. The words wrapped around objects is taken directly from the Bayeux Tapestry by the way.

The latest strip, #4, two things:

dividing the words with that tree makes them harder to read
the line "My arrows will tear down the wall" or whatever it was instantly made me think 300. There should be a follow up line like "Then we shall fight in the ruins," or something like that.

Nice idea. Trust me, there'll be plenty of opportunity for 300 references with this character later.

Oh, and the text around the tree is an imitation of the Bayeux Tapestry, in which words will often wrap around the pictures where there is little room.

Anyway, here is piece 5!

You really got a talent here. It is intereting. How do you draw this, what programs do you use?

I use this very nice Historic Tale Construction Kit: http://www.adgame-wonderland.de/type/bayeux.php
There are also characters that I have taken from photos of the Bayeux Tapestry, and others that are from drawings by me/photos and have been edited in the Bayeux Tapestry style. All in all I've tried to keep as close to the tapestry as possible, such as only using the colours of the tapestry's threads.

That second one makes it look like the sun is firing a burning spike trap at his face.
It's supposed to be a fireball type effect, that was fired from his finger and is moving right. I realise Halley's Comet from the Bayeux Tapestry is quite limited, but for the time being I don't need anything more than magical blasts, ultimate power arrows and mind control spells.

Best and most used way how to attract new readers is starting some contest with awards, cameos and such.....well, I can help you with drawing awards, but I never did that before and unfortunately I can draw things only in oots style (with few exeptions where I tried mimic other art styles)

I can also offer adding your banner in my signature and/or make you new avatar...If you know any other way how I could help, just tell me:smallwink:

However, do not lose hope, for the Second Saga begins this time next week! I'll probably finish The Adventures of Pepin Hurdy-Gurdy Master, technically a part of the First Saga that I started too late, in the interim.

THE SECOND SAGA BEGINS
http://i722.photobucket.com/albums/ww230/RufusChamberlain2/MidgetonaHorseII01.png

Well well, welcome to the Second Saga! I guess this answers your question -skimmer- :P.

But wait! It is time for our first competition! And guess what? It's the:

CHARACTER CONTEST!

That's right, I'm giving you all the chance to make your own character (including image, but you don't have to worry about tapestrying it, I'll do that), the winner of which will star in a Midget on a Horse Extra, or possibly in the main narrative itself!

You all have two weeks to take part!

My recommendations: Thin lines make for easier tapestrying. If it looks medieval or fantasy based it will seem a more natural character for Midget on a Horse, but don't let that bind you - an extremely odd character would make for a nice contrast :D. You should know by now what works for this and what doesn't :P.

-skimmer-
2009-04-01, 06:59 AM
Well thought contest, really. This certainly could bring here more readers:smallsmile:.
But maybe it would be better idea to wait at least 3 weeks and draw attention by puting it in the title. As you may noticed, not so much people watch this thread regurarly....yet.

Dunno, I actually never started any thread so I can't even try to figure it out:smallfrown:

You edit the first post, but you can no longer change the title after 30 days without the help of a mod.

Also, a character for the contest, none other than Henry Clay!

He must have lived forever, because he was a part of every major event for the first century or so of the United States of America.:smalltongue: He is a master diplomat, and is also known for starting a war or two.

Why thank you :D. I know what you mean though, considering GitP's traffic I get surprisingly little correspondence, so it's always appreciated.

Well I think some of that is because it doesn't seem like I want to post about trivial stuff in the thread because it seems kind of like it sort of derails the comic. Also, while epic, the story is a bit silly and it doesn't seem like it warrants long discussions and picking it apart. I'm sure other people feel the same way.
You get some comic threads where there is 15 posts for each comic that is posted and there is no way to know when its just some idle chatter or a new comic. Those comics also seem to be the ones where they get 8 comics in and then never get updated again.

Piece 6!
http://i722.photobucket.com/albums/ww230/RufusChamberlain2/MidgetonaHorseII06.png
Luckily derailing it isn't really an issue since I'm updating it every day.

I know it's a bit silly, it's an intentionally quirky take on this sort of thing, but I have tried to sow as many little seeds of character motivations and stuff as possible (for example: Gerd was a far better planner and tactitian than he seemed at first, but only in long-term plans; he couldn't think well on his feet at all. I showed this in his battles, particularly in the ones against The Dread Donkey of Grywrdnedythfdhv and the final one) to make it more interesting to read.

Now, I'm seriously considering making a website for Midget on a Horse, to be ready for the start of the Third Saga, but I won't be able to work on it until June. I also need hosting and such. In light of the possibility of making a website, I'd like to put some questions to you, the fans.

First of all, apologies for the massive delay. I have been very busy and very tired of late. Secondly, I have some tentative announcements for all of you:

The website is planned for Late July/Early August and will include the First and Second Sagas to begin with, and the Third will start on there. We will also have various extras that go 'behind the scenes' and if popularity increases we will have merchandise and eventually a forum. However, I do not doubt that Midget on a Horse's audience will grow due to a currently secret project. More on that in due course.

Last of all, have some Pieces:

Hello, Fifty-Eyed Fred. Firstly, I would like to apologize for not reading this comic. I missed it for a couple of weeks, and got overwhelmed by the archives, and didn't even attempt to slog through them. For that I apologize, since it looks like you're doing an amazing job, here. I will try to read through the archives. :smallfrown:

Also, I have just come to remind you about the latest webcomic Secret Santa (http://www.giantitp.com/forums/showthread.php?t=115392). Just because there is a lack of artists signed up for it, just in case you missed it.

Good luck, Fred. :smallwink:

Hey guys, sorry about my extended absences. I've been extremely busy and I thank you for your patience. Over the next few days there will be several bumper updates until I'm fully caught up. I'll go to the end of the Second Saga and then post the Midget on a Horse Extra for the Second Saga that should've started a while ago afterwards until the website launches.

So for today, it's Pieces 77 to 83!

I will begin reading the second saga soon, and I am looking forward to it. Keep up the good work, buddy. :smallwink:

I'm going to start updating one Piece a day again, and I'll start the Extra plotline now. I can't keep posting these in blocks. The erratic updates end here, and thanks for sticking with this as always.

I have also added a fantastic guest comic that Mad Mask did for me to the first post.

I was losing all my hopes already:smalltongue:

I'm curious if he was inspiration for Gundulf the Green a little bit, or it was a mere coincidence?

Fifty-Eyed Fred
2009-07-30, 05:41 PM
Gundulf the Green was inspired by one particular figure from a particular fantasy novel (well, superficially anyway), and his name was the name of a Norman architect who came over after the Norman Conquest of England (making it Bayeux Tapestry relevant) who worked on a number of cathedrals as they were being remodeled in the Romanesque style (like the castles they built, it was intended to show the English who was in charge as a psychological thing). Hence the joke; a Bayeux Tapestry Gandalf.

I remember bursting our laughing at a few parts, and it is truely a grat story while only being slightly random! I will keep up with the updates from now on, Fred!

Sorry, but I don't have time to update this webcomic, let alone start fiddling around with the front page, at the moment. I will, however, take this opportunity to say to anyone who might see this that while Midget on a Horse is on hiatus at the moment, it will be back at some point this summer, with a few important changes made. I will probably make a new thread for that when the time comes though.

Look forward to it! :smallwink:
