This comic might not have very many jokes. I got the insperation from getting a bunch of legos for christmas and gathering my older legos, then having a giant legoey war with lotsa gore. Not alot of characters survive. Oh, and since alot of people die, I accept all cameos. Just keep in mind that the character might die. This is my second comic and I'm learning how to make characters run and make scenery. This comic is not DnD based!

How about the background so that it doesnt look like it was duplicated. You know, move it qa bit so it isnt identical to the first one...

And the characters that should be standing in panel 3 have the exact pose they had in panels 1 and 2.

Nits shall be picked.

Alrighty. Movement of the arms and legs, at least a bit, is called for when characters are running. Maybe just a different position of the weapons. But something.

The speech bubbles. Try to leave a little space between the text and the sides of the bubble.

Eyes. For Brown-Skinned Dude's red eye, perhaps just a different color stroke? As long as it separates the eye from the face around it, it'd be good.

Spelling. Yes, none of us can escape it.

BUT WAIT. PRAISE IS FORTHCOMING?
I like the general opening. Not having any idea what the hell's going on, well, that drew me in.
Brown-Skinned Dude's crude-looking spear is cool, giving him that primal look (along with his ragged cape and all.)
Drow Girl's skull-topped staff. I like it a lot. Very shaman-ish.
Bandana Girl's alright, but I prefer the other two so far. Then again, this is just the first comic; my opinion can change quickly.

All in all, a pretty good start.

Concerning the legs, it's not that big a deal, and certainly nothing to get hung up about.

Kaytara

Guys... With the leg movement, to be fair, Rich doesn't use all that many running pose variations either. Look at the last comic. Panels 1-4 all show Belkar with the exact same leg positions.
Somehow, though, Rich makes it less obvious. A tip: if you make other things different, like the positions of heads and arms and the way they hold their weapons, you'll probably get it right too.

I like the character designs. :) Although the dark-skinned guy's design is perhaps generally a bit too dark, I like the details, especially the skull with those things dangling from it. :)

I like that you began the scene in media res, without us having any idea of what's going on. :)

As others have said, watch out for spelling. It's not that much trouble to run things through a spellchecker first. Like this one: http://www.spellcheck.net/

Some of those blue motion lines would go well with the rock to show it being hurled into the wall. I didn't realize it was a rock until I read your comment.

Logic-wise, this is where you lose me, though. If those characters are high level enough to cast Meteor Swarm, why were they running from the goblins in the first place? (And in case they were running from something ELSE, why waste that uberpowerful spell on goblins?)

No. This word does not exist. It's Lego. Saying Legos is like saying breads, or porks, or Exalteds.

Because I've never played DnD and all I have to go by is oots.
Fair enough.

Here, do what I did. Establish right away that your comic, though it is a fantasy comic, is not in a universe that runs by the DnD ruleset. All the DnD ruleset lets you do is make rules jokes, and we have enough of those. In the meantime, it can limit things, so throw it out the window and do what you want.

Kaytara

Because I've never played DnD and all I have to go by is oots.

Ah, that explains it. (Although, the only instance of Meteor Swarm in the comic comes from an EPIC-level Lich sorcerer, which sounds like a big deal even if you don't know DnD... while the obviously less powerful elf wizard has never been shown to cast it, so conclusions may be drawn there...)

It's a risky idea to make a DnD-based comic if you don't know DnD, though. Have you considered just disregarding the rules part and making up your own spells?

Objection!
On the latest page of the ABR discussion thread you have made three posts, with an average gap between them of one and two-thirds posts.
There is a clear contradiction here!

If it was truly as discouraged as you say it would have been added to the Forum Rules, in the same category as double posting. It has not, it remains solely in the "The Rules of the Game" thread in SMBG, detailing the regulations specific to that subforum.

Now calm down.:smallannoyed:

The lego-legos criticism was not of your work. It was of what you said in a post.

As for constructive criticism, in the 3rd comic, the human lady with the sword and bandanna is standing next to a giant hole, so you can't actually tell where her right arm is. It's not actually necessary to be able to read the comic, but it's just one of my petpeeves. Consider adding color for the fill instead of black. Maybe use the shape to carve out of the tower, and place a wall and floor in a layer behind, so it actually looks like it broke a wall for a tower, rather than a cartoon set where everything you see is everything there is, and a hole to a tower leads to nowhere due to the fact that no one will ever enter the tower.

Adding a slight blur to the smoke would also add quite a bit of coolness-effect. Just remember to be very zoomed out when you do it and to do it only right before exporting, and to undo it right after exporting, since it will very likely crash your computer if you are zoomed in... The blurring tools in inkscape suck.

Constructive criticism
I disagree with your use of "splash panel" comics. While it is great once in a while, when used over and over again it seems like your comic has no story and is just about people fighting. Plus, it makes the action drag forever, since there is only one panel. I think that it's not a good idea and that you should get back to multi-panel comics.

I also disagree with your use of "only one main character, the rest are cameos". Cameos do not allow for much character development, since their appearance is often brief and forgotten. You should know that character development is critical, lest the cast will look like hollow robots with a name slapped on them. Unless, of course, your fancomic is about hollow robots fighting each other for no apparent reason.

The art is acceptable for a beginner, although you should be wary of repetitive backgrounds and identical poses in each panel. In my opinion, characters should look alive (even stick figures) and move around in different positions.

Finally, I think that your script is not excellent. There is not much happening, we know nothing about the characters, and there is no story at all. You might say the first OotS were just about characters in a dungeon, but they had humour, which WAR GAMES! seems to lack. And stuff actually seemed to happen in the first 5 strips: the characters explored, fought, moved around, and bumped into each other; in WAR GAMES!, the characters just battled with monsters.

DoomITP
2009-01-17, 04:12 PM
* looks at comic * YaY :D

Your scripting could use a little work. What I do is when I draw a comic I think about what I kinda want to say and then i do the art. Once done a come up with a way to convey my wanted thought into something that takes at least five words. That way people don't complain too much and I can get away with being a bad scripter :smallwink:

Slight grammatical error.
Whose is a possessive, meaning of who.
Who's means who is

The phrase should be OK, who's next

trophey should be spelled trophy.

I am intrigued! I like how different characters have different colored speech bubbles, I must say.

That said, here are some grammar notes if you are interested:

What your comic said.
My recommendation for how to phrase it in the future (based on grammar notes, primarily, not changing any of the meaning or style).
Why!

What do you mean you need more reinforcements!
What do you mean you need more reinforcements?!
All the spelling and grammar here was good, but a question mark and an exclamation mark will better emphasize the king's disbelief and shock.

Look, if you don't whant to send more people, yu can kiss the south wall goodbye.
Look, if you don't want to send more people, you can kiss the south wall goodbye.
Again, almost perfect; just a few minor spelling issues.

One sec, these assasins look competant.
One moment, these assassins look competent.
"Sec" rings a bit too casually as it isn't really used outside of spoken conversation and webspeak.

You may also want to remove "Bigby", since that isn't OGL (in other words, the name is trademarked or copyrighted or something like that).

Have you considered getting a beta reader? Just someone who you can send the lines of dialogue to shortly before you finish the comic, and they'll send them back with all the grammar and spelling corrected. If you'd be interested, I could probably do it for you, or I'm sure many others would volunteer.

I thought kids could actually spell these days... Funny how using one person as an example (over something that isn't really an issue) just makes you look rude and is very inaccurate in making generalizations about people. :smallwink:

I've only turned in a half of my math homework this 6 weeks. We've had 5 different subs for my class because 6th period is so awful for them. My real teacher was pregnant, but she's back now and twisting stuff and getting all the kids with low grades to go up 1 letter grade. This is why grades were so high before Because she's nice and helps us.

Sub 1- Wrote people up every five secons. (I got written up for asking to go to the bathroom without rasing my hand.)

Sub 2- talked like a 16 preppy girl. Didn't do anything.

Sub 3- Didn't do anything.

Sub 4- Kind and caring but they found someone better some how.

Sub 5- Ex- football couch and used sports metaphors for everything. Kept yelling.

I present you with a choice.

Should the next comic have:
1- The bottom of the south wall
2- Top of the south wall
3- The king, paladins, and the maid
4- Zombies invading a nearby village
5- Dear
6- The dragon from comic 12
7- The army of NPC's fighting the tieflings near the moat, (with some of the paladins.)
8- The leader of the badies, and A paladin
9- A new paladin recruite (see how they are accepted in comic terms.)
10- Or something completely irrelevant but advances the plot.

hmmm...

so which side am I supposed to be rooting for?

while starting off in the middle of combat is generally a tried and true method of pulling people into the story, this just seems to be one random event after another. character and plot devices are introduced in one comic, and then killed/resolved one or two comics later. I don't know the who/what/when/where or why the fighting is taking place. seemingly plot-relevant characters are killed in a few strips after they're introduced, and your only joke thus far was a reference to a movie that glorified what was hands-down the most evil nation in history until the nazis came along. that and killing a rabbit. neither of which are particularly original or funny.

because I don't know any of the characters or what/why they're fighting, I feel little drama in their sudden deaths.

also, in one panel the spear is falling point away from a dead guard, and in the next he's somehow been impaled on his own spear. what's up with that?

all in all, I think you could be doing better.
