THE CLOWN

Some schools encounter students who think the occasional prank is funny. Something like letting a frog lose in the classroom. Other schools have students who like the kind of prank that involves filling a classroom with rabid dire wolverines. The latter student is the kind who becomes a clown. Wielding bad puns and bizarre arcane abilities, a clown travels the land, bringing laughter with it, but only for those who have bad senses of humor.

Adventures: Clowns see adventures as excellent ways to make money to finance their various clown needs, such as facepaint and comical clothing. Clowns also enjoy being able to travel and make use of their more magical abilities, ones that do not come up in basic life.

Characteristics: Clowns have a pool of abilities. They have a limited number of abilities, but these are usable at will, and their face paint allows them to adapt to certain situations quickly. They have some of the same areas of expertise as bards, but less magical or diplomatic power.

Alignment: The insanity that guides every aspect of a clowns existence makes a lawful clown impossible. Good clowns are much nicer about their pranks, while evil clowns frequently employ violence as part of their "humor."

Background: Clowns are always self-taught. Their inborn talent for comedy is somehow warped by some event of their life, changing their comedy into insane psychosis.

Other Classes: Clowns are derided by other classes. Wizards look down on their inborn magical powers. Sorcerors mock them for what they feel to be a poor application of magical talent. Druids and druids point out their habits of destroying nature for fun. Paladins deride them as "dangerously unstable" and "clinically insane." Bards appreciate their humor, and rogues enjoy having a similarly mischief minded companion.

GAME RULE INFORMATION

Abilities: Charisma is the basis for almost all Clown abilities. Dexterity helps make up for it's lack of armor proficiency.

Alignment: Any nonlawful. (Usually Chaotic Neutral)

HD: D6

CLASS SKILLS
The Clown's Class Skills Are: Balance, Bluff, Climb, Craft (Balloon Animals), disguise, escape artist, hide, jump, move silently, perform, profession, ride, sleight of hand, tumble, and use magic device.
Skill Points: 6+INT Modifier

CLASS FEATURES

Weapon And Armor Proficiency: Clowns are proficient with simple weapons, the sap, and two martial or exotic weapons of the Clown's choice. They have no proficiency with armor or shields.

Tricks (Su): Clowns have access to a certain number of special abilities called tricks. Tricks call upon inborn power and can be used at will. Clowns know a certain number of tricks that increases with level. Tricks are supernatural abilities. Every 3 levels, the clown may replace a trick he knows with a different trick, if he chooses.

Acrobatics (Ex): Starting at second level, a clown gains a insight bonus on all balance, climb, jump, and tumble checks equal to one half his class level. This effect does not work if the clown wears armor.

Nananananana (Ex): Beginning at third level, the Clown adds his charisma modifier (If positive) to his armor class when he is unarmored.

Balloon Animals (Su): A clown can create minions to fight for him using balloons. Balloon creatures may only be of the animal type until later in the progression. Creating a balloon animal is a full round action, and the created animal has the same statistics as the normal animal, with the exception that it has DR 5/piercing or slashing, and a critical hit with a piercing or slashing weapon destroys it instantly. To create a balloon animal, the Clown must make a Craft (Balloon Animals) check (DC 10+HD of animal to be created) if it works, the balloon animal is under the control of the clown until it is destroyed. A Clown may have up to one-fourth his class level+his Charisma modifier in balloon creatures at any given time (Minimum 1)

Facepainting (Su): Beginning at fifth level, the clown may begin to apply facepaint to himself to gain special abilities. See below for more rules on facepainting.

Insanity (Ex): At eighth level, the clown's last shred of sanity disappears. He instantly loses 6 points of wisdom and gains 6 points of charisma. This effect cannot be reversed by any means short of losing this level. The clown's wisdom cannot be reduced to 0 by this effect.

Helium (Su) At eleventh level, the clown's balloon animals gain a fly speed of 20 ft. (clumsy) if they did not have one already. If they did, their maneverability improves by one category.

Laugh at Death (Su) Nothing scares the clown, because nothing's scarier than a clown. Starting at fourteenth level, the clown is immune to all fear and death effects.

Timeless Body (Ex) At 18th level, the clown becomes to crazed to be affected by something so sane as aging. He no longer gains ability penalties for aging. When his natural lifespan is up, the men in white coats come to take him away to some unknown demiplane.

Balloon Anything (Su): At 20th level, the Clown may create any nonmagical item or any nonunique creature out of balloons. The DC for this is either 10+1/100th the item's market value or 20+HD of creature to be created. Any creature created acts exactly as a balloon animal, any item created works as a normal item of it's type, only it's hardness does not apply against piercing or slashing weapons.

FACE PAINT
The clown can gain additional abilities by using special patterns of markings on his face. Applying face paint takes 24 hours and the indicated amount in ink, arcane equipment, and other supplies. The DC to resist a face paint effect is 10+1/2 clown level+CHA modifier. Face paint is supernatural and cannot be removed by anyone other than the Clown. A clown may only have one face paint applied at a time, even if he has multiple heads.

Mask of the Mourner
Effect: Once per day per 5 clown levels, the clown may unleash an unearthly wail that makes all who hear it (Except those the clown excludes from the effect) feel a horrible sense of loss. All creatures within 100 feet must make a will save or be unable to take action for 1D4+CHA rounds.
Price: 5,000 GP

Visage Of Terror
Effect: The clown gains a frightful presence ability. All creatures who see the clown must make a will save or become panicked. Those who succeed are merely shaken.
Price: 13,000 GP
Minimum Level: 16th.

Warpaint
Effect: The Clown gains a +4 enhancement bonus to strength and +2 natural armor. He also gains proficiency with all martial weapons, shields, and armor. Wearing armor, however, still negates acrobatics and nananananana.
Price: 9,000 GP

Greater Warpaint
Effect: The Clown gains a +6 enhancement bonus to strength and dexterity, and +4 natural armor. He also gains proficiency with all martial weapons, shields, and armor. He may wear light armor without negating acrobatics and nanananananana, although armor check penalties to his skills still apply.
Price: 45,000 GP
Minimum Level: 13th

Fish Eyes
Effect: The clown gains a 50 foot swim speed, the ability to breathe water indefinitely, and darkvision 50 feet.
Price: 4,000 GP

Mask of Swiftness
Effect: Clown's movement speed is tripled, and he cannot become fatigued.
Price: 8,000 GP

Face of the Dragon

Price: 10,000 GP + 1,000 GP per extra damage die (max 15D6)

4,000 GP (Poor)
8,000 GP (Average)
10,000 GP (Good)
15,000 GP (Perfect)

Medusa Face
Effect: The clown gains a gaze attack. Activating it is a standard action, and the affected creature must make a fortitude save or be turned to stone.
Price: 14,000 GP
Minimum Level: 14

Face of Immunity
Effect: Become immune to energy, gain DR equal to clown level/-, gain +2 insight bonus on saves, SR equal to 10+clown level+Charisma modifier
Price: 35,000 GP

Face of Fire
Effect: At will, may fire a bolt of flame as a ranged touch attack dealing 2D6+1 per 2 clown levels fire damage. This mask also allows the Clown to cast continual flame once per day per four clown levels, and wall of fire once per day. He may additionally use Faerie Fire and Dancing Lights at will.
Price: 7,000 GP

Animal Mask
Effect: The Clown gains three natural attacks of his choice, with each appendage counting as one attack. For example, a Clown could choose 2 claw attacks and a bite, or 3 tentacle attacks. The Clown's body changes to allow the attacks. However, the created parts have no use other than attacking. For example, a clown cannot wield things in his tentacles if he chooses a tentacle attack, and he does not gain the ability to fly if he has wing buffets. Particularly grotesque extras can impair the Clown in some social situations, providing a -5 penalty on all bluff and diplomacy checks against people offended by such things. Examples of grotesque extra parts include tentacles or additional mouthes (for bite attacks.)

NATURAL WEAPON DAMAGE BY SIZE
Type Small Medium Large
Bite 1D6 1D8 1D10
Claw 1D4 1D6 1D8
Tentacle 1D4 1D6 1D8
Wing 1D3 1D4 1D6
Tail 1D4 1D6 1D8
Price: 9,000 GP

Liar's Eyes
Effect: The clown gains a +4 enhancement bonus to charisma, and a +10 enhancement bonus on all bluff checks.
Price: 28,000 GP

Mask of the Acrobat
Effect: The clown's acrobatics bonus increases by 5.
Price: 8,000 GP

Greater Mask of the Acrobat
Effect: The clown's acrobatics bonus increases by 10
Price: 20,000 GP

Honest Face
Effect: The Clown gains a +10 bonus on all Bluff and Diplomacy checks.
Price: 7,000 GP

God Mask
Effect: This face paint covers the clown's face and provides a +2 bonus on intimidate checks due to it's terrifying nature. However, it provides no other benefit until it is activated as a full round action. When activated, the clown immediately takes 20D6 points of backlash vile damage. If this kills the clown, his body and soul are completely obliterated, and only the intervention of a deity of Greater God rank or higher can bring him back. If he survives, he gains a +10 enhancement bonus to all his abilities. Additionally, he gains a +20 deflection bonus to AC, and a +10 sacred or profane (Depending on alignment) bonus on all attack rolls. He gains a +10 insight bonus on all saving throws, and a +20 insight bonus on all skill checks. All his attacks deal vile damage. Additionally, he does not die at -10 hit points. He continues acting until the effects of this mask wear off, regardless of what HP he is at. The effects wear off after half an hour, and when they do, the Clown must make a will save (DC 41) or all his mental attributes are drained to 0, leaving him comatose. Whether or not this succeeded, he must also make a fortitude save (DC 41) or die instantly. Even if he succeeds this check, he takes an additional 20D6 points of vile damage. If either of these effects kill him, the effect is the same as if he had died of the backlash damage upon activation. This mask can only be activated once, after which the paint disappears from the clown's face.
Price: 120,000 GP, 6,000 XP.
Minimum Level: 21st.
NOTE: Despite the fact that this deals vile damage, it is not an evil effect. If a good character uses this mask, it deals a modified version of vile damage that can only be healed inside a Desecrate spell, rather than Consecrate. Likewise, the backlash damage they take can only be healed inside a desecrate spell.

Wow, that's pretty crazy.

Some of the face masks seem very powerful. I like the balloon animal thing the best.

One quick thing. Is Balloon Animals restricted to the Animal creature type? If so, you sould state that more clearly. Also, Dinosaurs are Animals, so the Balloonosaurus ability is redundant and only serves to make Dinosaurs harder to make than before.

Yeah, just animals. The reasonable explanation for why Dinosaurs were separate is because I forgot that the "Beast" creature type doesn't exist anymore. So I should probably fix that.

Does it look balanced otherwise?

Brilliant, apart from some of the masks, Skull of the Grim in particular, I'd say it's quite balanced.

Yeah, I know. I thought the minimum level stuff would help balance it out. I think I'll reduce the times per day a bit.

Okay, I changed the prices of some of the masks and added some new ones.

Use "magical beast" instead of "dinosaur"?

Use "magical beast" instead of "dinosaur"?

Yeah, but Balloon Magical beast doesn't have quite the same ring as "Balloonasaurus" does. Maybe I'll just make Balloon Anything a few levels earlier.

As someone who has worked as a clown, stuff like this depresses me. All we want to do is bring joy to children, and yet pop culture has warped clowns into a symbol of evil and insanity. All real clowns I've dealt with, both professionals and amateurs, have been perfectly well-adjusted. A lot of them have already been forced to drop the face paint for fear of scaring kids, and at the rate we're going the costume will be next. It's just plain sad (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=E2E_RSJAhYU).

This is more based on the Joker and other such comedic serial killers rather than real clowns.

Also, let's face it. Someone who wears weird make up, dresses comically, and tells bad puns for a living is really just want Dungeons and Dragons needs.

The natural conclusion of this is, obviously, the Gene Simmons prestige class.

Actually, I think Ace Frehley (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0jzve-Tmd70) would be the better choice, at least based on the KISS interview with Tom Snyder. Gene just seems like a grumpy old man in this interview...

Not sure if I like Laugh at Death, though it sorta makes up for the -6 Wis.

Some facepaints seem a bit powerful but not broken.

I like the class

Great class. I love it probably because I'm terrified of most clowns. I'm getting the weird feeling The Clown is the bastard love child of the warlock, the binder, and the jester.

I do have a couple of questions.

1st:
With face paint is the paint used up if you change paint? Ex: I have on the Skull of Grim face paint, the next day I take it off and put on Birdman face paint. Do I just lose the Skull of Grim face paint or could I reapply later?

2nd:
Tricks are at will, but with Schadenfreude (great name btw) its round based. Was this done to just make The Clown use an action every few rounds assuming he wanted to keep Schadenfreude active?

3rd:
Slap Stick: does The Clown just randomly pull out/conjure the over sized object or do they need to have some object on them?

4th:
Balloon Anything: If you balloon a say sword or other weapon does it act just as a weapon or does it fight as a normal balloon animal would? The line otherwise functions exactly as balloon animal is why I ask.

Great Class

There is nothing funny about a clown in the moonlight

Pretty nice, inventive class. Im personally not scared of clowns in the slightest, and this only seems humourous to me, but i could definitely imagine some great characters getting made as a result of this.

It seems a bit too overpowered, with the facepaint.

No, it's conjured. The oversized object bit is more for effect than actual relevance to the ability.

4th:
Balloon Anything: If you balloon a say sword or other weapon does it act just as a weapon or does it fight as a normal balloon animal would? The line otherwise functions exactly as balloon animal is why I ask.

The weapon acts as a weapon, I edited it just now to be more clear.

Reading this, i only have one question, is there a cost for making the Balloon Animals and Items? I personally feel there should be a Balloon cost to make things, and then possibly have them change for the size of what your making, such as a Small Baloon animal would cost less then a Medium Balloon Animal, but cost more then a Tiny Balloon animal because it uses less Balloons, but that is just a thought i had. Other then that, it looks like a great class and it sounds like fun to play.

I figured the cost of balloons is negligible. Kind of like cheap spell components- You have to indicate you have them, but they don't actually cost money.

Few more questions and suggestions

Vanish: I would move this to level 16 (crazy trick) to be on par with the warlock's Path of Shadows.

However I am a bit confused by Vanish is it to travel or just to hide on a different plane for a round? It seems very much like plane shift in Travel to me.

I would scale the Birdman mask something like:
40ft for 2000gp
60ft for 4000gp
80ft for 8000gp
100ft for 15000gp
120ft for 20000gb

Medusa Mask: I would move this to level 16 to be on par with the warlock's Word of Changing, or increase the price by quite a bit.

Mask of the Wolf/Bear/Rat/Boar/Tiger: as much as I like it I would either drop it or have it grant natural attacks, enhancement bonuses, and something like scent not grant the template.

Yeah, it meant hide. I added a duration to it.

Made it more of a natural weapon thing.

Additionally, I've added an epic level mask.

We need joker stats. NOW! also, maybe an alternate to balloon animals involving trick props (bang gun, acid flower, overpowered tanglefoot bags)
