When Jillian is compaining about the Archons here (http://www.giantitp.com/comics/erf0057.html), she refers to them as "Mealy mouthed mercenary .... erm Moths".
I guess it could be just an attempt to maintain the alliteration, but maybe the Arkendish allows Charlie to tame moths and greatly enhance their capabilities. The archons don't look entirely solid, so maybe their appearance is purely illusionary.
