Welcome To... [insert dramatic drum-roll] Random Banter!

This is where the dregs of socie...uh, I mean the greatest if us all gather to talk about anything we want (as long as it doesn't belong to a different thread).

The rules, are as fol-

Aren't they more like guidelines?

:smallsigh:
Please excuse me.
*walks offstage*
[insert sound of man screaming as he is ripped limb from limb]
*walks back on picking his teeth with a rib*
No, they are not guidelines, they are anchient traditions passed from one generation of Random Banter to another. So, I recommend listening to them.

Rules

1. Spam. For the purposes of RB, one word posts are generally considered spam. Likewise, posts that are nothing but *actions like this* are also be considered spam. Remember that the quality of the post's content is much better than the speed of your response.

2. This isn't the Play by Post or Town forum, nor is it the Silly Message Board Games or Structured Games forum. Please avoid continuous roleplay or mock battles and fights such as the "competition for control of the universe".

3. If it's already a thread, don't bring it to RB. RB has such a huge range of subject matter even restricted to the little snippets that probably don't warrant their own thread, it doesn't need legitimate thread topics cluttering it up as well. The exception to this is to bring something that is off-topic from one thread, but on-topic for RB and the subject doesn't warrant a thread of its own.

4. Don't advertise other threads in RB. Just because these new threads move at speeds more appropriate to a message board than an IM session doesn't mean you need to come over to RB and brow beat people into posting in your latest brainchild.

5. Please don't post single line posts alerting us to your current status -- as in "I'm back." This is Random Banter, not "How to stalk Random GitP forum members."

6. Don't poke, kick or bump the thread. It will move at whatever pace it wants to. Also, please refrain from Captain Obvious comments akin to "My, the thread is fast today."

7. Random Banter can only be as good, or as entertaining, as you make it. Demands to be entertained will fall on deaf ears unless you can add something more meaningful to the conversation.

8. As this is a public forum, where the current topic is nicely recorded for you, and not a conversation where you could have missed the beginning, please refrain from asking something to the effect of "What's the topic?". Please take the time to read up a bit first.

9. Thread Creator must include the words "Random" and "Banter" as well as the thread #. Try to be concise as well.

10. Every post should contain two visible, legible complete sentences, Subject and Predicate. C'mon, make your old English teachers proud.

11. Remember, Random Banter is not your IM client. If you want to have a back and forth discussion with just one person, look in their contact information for IM details.

12. Whenever a new thread is created, all "first post", "first page", and all posts of that nature will be deleted by the administrators. Please avoid doing this, as it is frustrating for them to deal with one-lined posts like this.

13. Double-posting is not your friend. We have edit buttons for a reason.

And here are the previous incarnations of this thread.

As stated above, this thread is for random discussion, not random chit chat. That is to say, this is a forum, not your IM client. People have set up an unofficial IRC chat thingy for that sort of thing. Not only will you not annoy the people here, you will also help increase the popularity of the IRC chat.

So, gather around the fireplace and spin your tall tales to one another. Go to the bar and get some mead. But most importantly...

Rejoice!

The previous topic was...soda, giggling, and hyperactivity?

I'm currently very happy my kids can play Settlers. That's one of my favourite games. And Carcassonne is very good, too, although the wife of my friend nearly refused to play with us once again at one time

Sure! Dibs on being the blue guy!

@ Zar Peter: Those are great games. I love Carcassone and fortunately get to play it every so often. Settlers is often fun, but I haven't been able to play it since FWA. Those furries play a mean game of Catan. Sigh. I wish I could play it more often. Whenever you get to come to the States, we'll play a game or two.

I heartily condone and endorse your undertaking.

Pssst! Kneen; you and rubakhin have been shipped again. Go and see.

Let me sum up my day briefly:
I spent five hours revising for my history exam on Elizabethan England 1558 - 88 and was fairly certain that I'd fail or do miserably. I've missed so much thanks to various trips and interviews.
So when it comes to my exam I saw, to my utter delight, that the two questions I could do were on my two worst areas. Foreign policy (in France) and Catholicism and their resistance to the Religious Settlement.
I did the France one because my mind just blanked on the other one. And I think that at best I got a C. I messed up the timing, don't think I put enough in depth material in. A right balls' up.
So I'm resitting this exam come summer.
Then it started raining. Not bad. A free and E Lit.
And then out of my three buses home: one was crammed full. One broke down. One ran out of freepin' diesel! AT THE BUS BAY! What? What?! Hello! This is supposedly the biggest bus company in the south west and only one in three buses worked. SO I waited til 5pm (inside, out of the rain for the last quarter of an hour) and made friends with someone, who it turns out, is a Playgrounder. Talk about a coincidence, and we like lots of the same things, so naturally we chatted when we were on the bus home. And the other bus home.
Then I walked her home, turned the other way and walked about a mile home In heavy rain. Into the rain. And was soaked.
And two of the three books I ordered came today! Ironically, it's books two and three. One should come tomorrow, so I'll have the complete set: Books 1 -5.
Overall: the literal fail was outweighed massively.
This just about warrants a :smallcool:.

So, my second semester just started. Hooray. I get to read Othello and Moby ****. And stuff.

*snorts*
It seems the venerable Coidzor lacks the ability to differentiate between pronouns.
I walked a female friend home because I liked her company and I'm loth to merely abandon company with a new friend friend simply because of her living in the oppostie direction to me and the weather being deplorable.
'sides, I've walked further in worse weather.
Is this forum so sunk in depravity that my (supposedly old fashioned) sense of courtesy and camaraderie (for want of a better word) that my seeing someone home, as I do sometimes, or to a classroom, or to a bus, is taken immediately as a sign of romantic feelings?
By all the Gods of Olympos, this is not a soap. This is not Eastenders and I am not some hormone crazed teenager.

@groundhog: the :smallcool: is because the friends, books and awesomeness that is E Lit outweights the monotony of the revision and my depression of the literal Fail I did. It shows that overall, today was better than it was worse. But only just.

Profanity filters rock! Cool, new semester! I start my third semester the 9th of february, well, technically I start in march, but I have two extra classes in february, one is a photography class and the other one is an anual project.

Ha. Moby ****. Ooh, it's a dirty word! :smalltongue:

Anyway, that's cool. Photography is great. Haven't taken a photo class in a while, but I really like black and white photography (although I hate it when you have to take the film out...I'm not a fan of the whole "pitch black absolute darkness thing." >_< And just out of curiosity, what exactly is this "annual project?"

A new semester for me isn't really that exciting. I don't have any new classes or anything. Ah, high school is boring. :smalltongue:

Well, teachers choose the best works we've done during the year and we have to make a portfolio with those. The portfolio must be not only a container of pieces of graphic design, but a piece of design itself.

I'm studying graphic design, just in case you didnt knew that already.

In any case... Sorry to hear that. I mean, if you're not going to get your hormonal craziness out of your system as a teenager... well, that's like not getting chicken pox out of the way when you're 4 or 5 or whatever the proper age is these days.

Huh. That's kinda cool, actually. I like.

I'm in a graphic design class too (for the first time this year). It's not really a great class, as it's just a high-school course and the teacher isn't even really a graphic designer (painting is her main thing), but it's still nice. And I needed to take a studio art. I was really looking for some kind of digital art or illustration class, but graphic design is actually pretty fun. Right now we're making energy conservation company logos.

@^: Cool, I was always good for drawing, graphic design is something I can really see myself doing. Curiously, what I always wanted to do was video games, writting the story and creating the characters, but I have no idea of how to get into the world of video gaming, I can get from graphic design though.

He, I put Coplantor the character in at least 2 of my works, I wanted to ask permission from the playgrounders to use some of their avatars for something I made but I end up doing something completly different from my original idea and stick figures would've been strange.

Oh. My. Goodness. Last night was our jazz band's concert with the NYU jazz orchestra, and Lenny Pickett (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lenny_Pickett). It was absolutely incredible! That man has complete and utter mastery over his instrument. The students were also incredible, us, well, we played very well, but nothing like them.

I also made a new personal record: Three early entrances, one of which was the first note of the song, which came in a beat early. Luckily, audiences generally can't tell these things. :smalltongue:

Also, Lenny Pickett's a funny guy in person. I like him. :smalltongue:

Ugh. I got really nauseous in biology today. We were talking about nematodes, and tapeworms, and whatnot, and I've got some kind of freak phobia that makes me fear creatures with no real... organs, like eyes, and discernible mouths, and appendages. So the best way to scare me is wave an anemone or some kind of tube worm, from the bottom of sea, in my face.

Why does it need to be enriched? (unless there's something wrong) You can get all the nutrients you need by eating (and drinking) a varied diet. A glass or so of Orange juice has enough vitamin C for anyone. You don't see me taking any gold supplements, but my body still needs it. It just happens to get it from regular food.

Just because it says 'NOW WITH VITAMINS Ξ and Ω!!!' doesn't mean it's actually any good for you at all.

I don't have enough of a mustache to shave yet, but I might shave it when it gets too big for me. If I tried to shave it now I might cut myself badly. I suppose you're right about the "If you think it makes you look mature/older/dashing, it's likely that everyone else will see a little kid who thinks he looks mature/older/dashing" thing. I don't have bum-fluff, I have a really small amount of blonde hairs on my upper lip, it's not even enough to call bum-fluff. It's practically invisible unless I look really closely in the mirror. I'll start shaving soon, but right now it really isn't worth it.

I wouldn't worry too much about using a razor either, when I first used one I thought I'd cut myself and I didn't, I think in fact I actually managed to cut/graze myself the other day with an electric shaver. I'm not quite old enough to grow a proper beard, after about 2 weeks it stops growing and just looks kinda silly, I'm gonna test over summer holidays how long it gets if I don't shave though.

Also, you are in fact >>Less<< likely to cut yourself when it's sparse. The worst cuts happen due to razor clog, in my leg experience. And you need to start sometime so when the severe facial fuzz of doom appears, you are prepared.

i <3 the heck out of my lectric razor. f@$^ shaving cream in the a#@. such a headache. that's really the only reason, though - you gotta be pretty fast and careless to cut yourself with your standard disposable. i still occasionally use those, too, cos you get so much closer a shave.

as a bearer of blonde facial hair, i know it's hard to pull off. i have an inherent anti-mustache bias in all things, but it's particularly unbecoming when it is fluffy and half-invisible. it looks pretty silly until it gets long enough that you can trim the ends off so that youv'e got the darker thicker part going at a relatively uniform length.

interestingly, since i grew the beard (and it's a fairly modest, neatly-trimmed chinstrap beard, not one of your mountain-man nightmares), folks have carded me a lot more frequently. i guess it looks like i got the beard to look older, and so look younger.

...i ain't complaining about this effect at all.

eta that my non-leg-shaving experience agrees with cutepoison's inasmuch as the source of major shaving cuts.

My alarm was set for six am today. For some unknown reason I was awake by five past five.
But I caught the taxi at the right time, made it to bus station in time to catch the express bus to college. Got there at five past eight. An hour earlier than usual.
Exam started at nine fifteen.
's'good I caught the early bus as my friend who catches the same bus as made didn't get into the exam 'til ten. Luckily he was allowed in and got all the time he needed; but the bus didn't come.
Again.
But I rocked that exam. It was almost identical in creative writing tasks to one I did as an AS practice paper last year. That, combined with my frequent writing practice, means I'm confident about my two pieces of directed writing.
And because of my 100 word drabble series I managed to get in so much stuff that meant I could use complicated terminology and make an amazing (to me at least) exam.
Book hasn't come yet though.

But I'm readdicted to Labyrinth. Just listening to the songs and watching scenes over and over and over.
And I got out of doing my French homework by extending the truth. I told her I wouldn't be able to do it because I had loads of exams.
Well, I had had them. She just took it to mean that I had more coming. *is pleased as it's a horrible piece of homework too*

It's probably Hershey's or something. Good ol' Hershey's chocolate, made the American way--with gutter runoff for flavor and brick dust to help it keep on shelves. God bless the USA.

On beards:

They are a good thing. Spesh the goatee neat trimmed type. The Grizzley Adams look is nice, and a fantastic place to save rations, but when it starts to eat more of your food that reaches you mouth a quick taming with a trimmer should be considered.

Regarding the missing chocolate:

It may have been teleported however this is a touch unlikely. The sock eating monsters however are partial to choclate occasionally. Have you noticed a sock shortage lately?

The college that I have applied to (having now been told that studying five and a half A-levels 14 years ago is too long ago to count for Uni applications) has only just replied to me with a holding letter! it could take another four weeks to get round to arranging an interview with a tutor.

I've had things disappear from my room that I couldn't find despite fully cleaning the room twice (I'm messy and lazy but do get a work ethic sometimes) only to have reappear mysteriously while cleaning the room a third time.

Protip: it is most probable you went out and had fun with friends, spending money on such pleasures and then when money was scarse were forced into cutting food budgets.

Whereas I can either eat food, bread, crackers, cheese and pasta and such while obtaining scant vitamins from such things as multivitamin tablets, or I can run out of money on account that I don't have a loan nor any other monetary backing.

Not that I could even blow all money money if I wanted on account that I don't know anyone, don't know anywhere to go, don't participate in any societies or such and generally don't ever talk to anyone. In fact, the total time I have talked to myself would most likely be several dozen times the time I have talked to anyone else, and that is to say I hardly ever talk to myself anymore.

Also, I believe finding somewhere to live next year will be particularly painful on account that university-managed accomodation seems entirely geared towards groups of people who have met and got along during the first year, where I, as previously mentioned, have met noone besides the seven other people who share a kitchen with me. Amongst these people two speak English as their first language, I most I have even spoken to any of them can be summed up via an awkward hello and I can remember two of their names.

In short, angry rage. And I still can't find Wally's effing pet dog on this picture.

Well you should've done what I did- lie to the government and get a big-arse loan you're never going to pay off. Rookie mistake!

I do feel you about finding accommodation though. I had actual panic attacks trying to find a place very year. Stay in halls until you know enough people to find a place collectively.

But get yourself to the societies. As many as possible. You'll eventually meet people who went but can't be arsed with it and suggest going to the pub- and those people will be friends for life.

I've heard very, very good things about it from people online, but more importantly, from people who I actually can stand and respect around campus. So I want to go see it.

Unfortunately, I don't like going to the theatre alone and I can't really go by myself due to lack of wheels and my only friends I could go with would be a single guy and that's just the wrong message, so I'd have to organize some sort of group outing.

Hmm. I should see if anyone else hasn't seen it and do that...

I got some exams back, did well. Eh. Not too interesting of a day, all in all.

But...there's Bones on tonight! Two new episodes! Yay!

I'm probably not gonna have time to watch them, seeing as I haven't started my homework yet and the first episode airs at 8:00 I believe (in nine minutes), but I'll get to watch them later on the internet.

So.

I think what I really meant to say is "No, not really." :smalltongue:

Anything interesting happen to anyone else? Preferably involving monotremes and/or ice? (:smallwink:)

I saw my own avatar? Nothing much, just getting ready for a camping trip and doing buckets of homework.

@Coid: Same thing happens to me, I hate going to the movies alone, I'm a little short on cash, and I dont know if my friends would like that movie. There's a little romance on it right?

It's a very long movie about Brad Pitt aging backwards. This is all I know. >.<

Not really interested in it, to be honest...

Yeah, there's a bit of a love story to it. Not sure how much, of course...x.x

But yeah, Brad Pitt. Who I have ambivalent feelings towards.

As someone who has actually seen the movie, I'd say it's really good. The love story is a very, very large proportion, but it plays out as realistically and subtly as is possible. The only complaint I have is that the first 45 minutes had a, I believe somewhat intentional, feeling of overall creepiness, descending from the tones of pedophilia as the main character meets his future love...

*****

Five stars, see it.

OK, so the seats of the cinema will once again meet my bottom. I'll go see the movie if I can convince someone to go see it with me.

I've heard lots of good things about it from friends, but, well, I dunno. It just doesn't really seem appealing to me. I just like weird movies, I guess. And Paul Newman movies.

Gondor has no wallpaper. Gondor needs no wallpaper. :smalltongue:

Ever since I went mac I haven't really had much of a desire for anything like a wallpaper for my desktop. @_@ I can't figure out why either....
