Welcome To... [insert dramatic drum-roll] Random Banter!

We talk about everything that you could imagine here.
As long as you read the rules first.
If you don't, the thread will fall silent and we'll stare at you until you back away slowly crying your apologies.
So read 'em.

Rules

1. Spam. For the purposes of RB, one word posts are generally considered spam. Likewise, posts that are nothing but *actions like this* are also be considered spam. Remember that the quality of the post's content is much better than the speed of your response.

2. This isn't the Play by Post or Town forum, nor is it the Silly Message Board Games or Structured Games forum. Please avoid continuous roleplay or mock battles and fights such as the "competition for control of the universe".

3. If it's already a thread, don't bring it to RB. RB has such a huge range of subject matter even restricted to the little snippets that probably don't warrant their own thread, it doesn't need legitimate thread topics cluttering it up as well. The exception to this is to bring something that is off-topic from one thread, but on-topic for RB and the subject doesn't warrant a thread of its own.

4. Don't advertise other threads in RB. Just because these new threads move at speeds more appropriate to a message board than an IM session doesn't mean you need to come over to RB and brow beat people into posting in your latest brainchild.

5. Please don't post single line posts alerting us to your current status -- as in "I'm back." This is Random Banter, not "How to stalk Random GitP forum members."

6. Don't poke, kick or bump the thread. It will move at whatever pace it wants to. Also, please refrain from Captain Obvious comments akin to "My, the thread is fast today."

7. Random Banter can only be as good, or as entertaining, as you make it. Demands to be entertained will fall on deaf ears unless you can add something more meaningful to the conversation.

8. As this is a public forum, where the current topic is nicely recorded for you, and not a conversation where you could have missed the beginning, please refrain from asking something to the effect of "What's the topic?". Please take the time to read up a bit first.

9. Thread Creator must include the words "Random" and "Banter" as well as the thread #. Try to be concise as well.

10. Every post should contain two visible, legible complete sentences, Subject and Predicate. C'mon, make your old English teachers proud.

11. Remember, Random Banter is not your IM client. If you want to have a back and forth discussion with just one person, look in their contact information for IM details.

12. Whenever a new thread is created, all "first post", "first page", and all posts of that nature will be deleted by the administrators. Please avoid doing this, as it is frustrating for them to deal with one-lined posts like this.

13. Double-posting is not your friend. We have edit buttons for a reason.

As stated above, this thread is for random discussion, not random chit chat. That is to say, this is a forum, not your IM client. People have set up an unofficial IRC chat thingy for that sort of thing. Not only will you not annoy the people here, you will also help increase the popularity of the IRC chat.

Enjoy the smoky dark atmosphere of this awesome, awesome jazz lounge.

Rejoice!

The previous topic was... Neebly's liquor, Dune, and this thread. I'm delighted and grateful that I got one.

And the themesong should be either something with Batman or Dr. Who...

Put a label saying "Rainbowflesh: $5" on them, and they'll sell like hotcakes.

I'm going to preface this by saying that's probably good advice, but that almost kind of sounds like something from a movie where a character is impersonating an expert.

"Uh, sir, I was wondering if you had any advice. I've got a nasty anti-aliasing problem, and I'm having trouble defining the edges in this part of the image. Any advice?"

"Hm. Well, of course, there's always altering the Alpha layers."

I've never really understood the purpose of that word. Why can't you just say "Yeah, I'm against the disestablishment of the Anglican Church?"

Of course, then the world would be down one awesome word.

I remember that I tried to spell that word in first grade without ever having seen it before. I almost got it right, too—I think I spelled it with an I instead of an E in the "establish" part accidentally. Which is understandable, given that many people pronounce it that way.

I used to be so proud of my spelling. I would have won that class spelling bee on my field trip to a revolutionary war era schoolhouse in whateverth grade, too, if only I had known how to spell the word "Jesuit." I spelled it with a Z instead of an S.

I blame my Jewish upbringing, as I had absolutely no clue what a Jesuit was. :smallannoyed: :smalltongue:

Aw, come ON. Where did my megapost go?

Hold on, let me fish it back up.

Over the years, my friend and I have come up with a LOT of jokey superheroes.

These (and more) will get a writeup in a future Chocolate Hammer post, so spoiler warning, I guess.

Steel Man: An ordinary steel mill worker was making the rounds when suddenly, a mysterious shipment of radiation was conducted through the workplace. Abruptly, the shipment swung out of control, knocking the mill worker into one of the steel vats along with the radioactive isotope.

When his friends fished him out of the vat, he was a humble steel mill worker no longer. He was, in fact, a mildly radioactive block of solid steel.

His friends, however, decided that he was a superhero, and that being a vaguely humanoid blob of steel was his superpower. They used him to fight crime, mostly by dropping him off things onto criminals. He was then recruited for the rock group of Baron Mondo, a figure who will require his own writeup.

Treant: Johnny Ironiclastname, an odd-job worker, was chainsawing down a tree in a client's yard when the chainsaw slipped, severing his right arm. He raced into the house, spraying blood, there was shouting, he was screaming, there was a bit of confusion ("THE TREE! THE TREE! I NEED A SURGEON! CALL A DAMN SURGEON! THAT DAMN TREE!") and the homeowner ended up accidentally calling a tree surgeon. The tree surgeon walked in, and, in the chaos, the confusion, the blood and the shouts of "REATTACH THE LIMB! THE LIMB!" he did the best he could under the circumstances and attached the severed tree to the man's stump.

The man, blinded by pain and confusion, basically went insane. He sought out a voodoo practitioner and paid her 150$ to animate the tree into a living, sentient limb under his control. He then launched into a wave of crime, because, well, it seemed like the thing to do.

Cannoneer: Cannoneer's name is a bit misleading. His real powers have little to do with his signature cannon. Cannoneer is the son of a dryad, an earth spirit who's essence is bound to a tree and who lives in a sort of symbiotic relationship with it. His father, however, was a Miami travel agent. The child was born in Florida. When he was 6 years old, he started noticing that whenever he turned around, there was this palm tree, standing nearby. This freaked him out, and when he pointed it out to his father, his father explained the child's...unusual...circumstances. Essentially, the tree was bound to the child, and would follow him around whenever nobody was looking. It was not sapient, or magic, or anything--it only had two powers. Firstly, it would always try to follow him around, even when not on soil. Secondly, it would always, always, always save his life. This latter power was tested when at the age of 16, the tree caught a bullet for him in an incidental gang shooting. Cannoneer decided that his gift, dubious as it was, was to be shared with mankind. His schtick involves launching himself out of a cannon towards his enemies. His palm tree will always break his fall, and will prevent projectiles from hitting him. As you might imagine, it looks a little beat-up at this point, but thankfully nobody has thought to use fire yet.

Leading to cheerleaders bursting out of your closet to a jrock accompaniment and them dancing in order to give you superhuman inspiration in order to achieve your goals?

Coidzor, that avvie is illegally cute.

*blink, blink* Err, thanks. This is of the second of two possums that my dog hurt before we finally figured out how to stop him from getting loose (the Labrador in him was urging him to become quite the escape artist).

Both were named Pete by my brother as a sort of Pete and Pete reference, and came to live with us while they were small. The second one we estimate was about a month out of the pouch, so 90 days old when we found him, whereas the first one was maybe 2 months old when he crawled up onto our front porch using only his front legs to eat the cat's food. (for some reason the raccoons would stay away since it was so close, but I guess that guy was really, really hungry)

We figure the dog hurt him since we had seem other possums around that weren't hurt and the dog had escaped the night before. We found him on the porch, unable to get down and cornered, so we brought him inside and made him up a crate and gave him some bananas and cat food.

The second one my dog literally leaped into the bushes and ripped his leash out of my hands when I was giving him a walk at around 3 in the morning because he needed to go real bad and I was barely awake at the time so I didn't know what was happening until I was prying his jaws open to get the baby opossum out of there. I retreated to a safe distance with the dog and watched him. When he wasn't walking right afterwards I called my bro. He's the one who knows the most about animals and personally kept them and I just wasn't able to deal with things at the time.

I'd say this is him as about half a year old in our bath tub during bathtime.

I was actually hoping the Cardinals would win, too. At least at the end. I'll be honest, for most of the game I was just messing around with friends instead of watching. And I don't really have any particular attachment to either team. I do think that that last call on the fumble was a little iffy, but eh. The Cardinals weren't really expected to win, and they still put up a hell of a fight. That catch for the Steelers at the end of the game (when they scored the touchdown) was pretty nice, though, I have to admit.

But I don't really follow football in the first place, so...

@Felixaar: :smallbiggrin:

Anyway, I just took some cough medicine and a motrin/ibuprofen/whatever, so I feel a bit better now. Just gotta wait for my clothes to finish in the dryer so I could put them away and go to bed...

Nice, cold, white, rare, hardly ever seen snow.
Which broke Britland.

And I have barely any French homework, none for English, none for Classics (aside from reading my copy of The Last Days of Socrates (which I had to buy myself just to actually complete the coursework - but there is a potentiality of selling and regaining the money)), none for anything really which is such a rarity.
And I'm bored.

Thirty odd miles away from home. With three hours and forty more minutes of nithing to do but a sheet and a half of short answer to French grammar questions.
And I woke up late so I had no brekkie, meaning I've already eaten my paltry lunch (two packs of crsips) and the cash machine up college which doesn't charge for withdrawals is broken, the one down Spar charges.

The search-bots, they find everyone eventually. One of the reasons my email's not up, though considering I get about 20 emails a day asking me if I want to increase the size of my penis or buy a rolex, I fear this may be far too little, far too late.

It's back!
And I got to leave early (about half one) on Monday and had a snow day for the first time ever yesterday. Good times. Every single school and college in the county was shut.
I had my first ever snowball fight Monday and built my rst snowman yesterday. College was open today though. I had five people in my first lecture (thesixth showed up halfway through though) out of fourteen and thirteen out of twenty five in each of my three other lectures though.
Skivers most of them I bet.

@DeeRee: I'm the same. At the moment I have three tabs and am going to be opening four more as soon as I hit submit. Music and stories mainly. And one for my E Lit courseworok.
Funny thing about my coursework though:
Today we had to hand in our draft intro to work over and discuss in class, but I had to do mine in fifth, well, I was planning to. But I ended up helping Female Anime E Lit Friend for most of it; finding her sources, proofreading and suggesting changes and what needed to be added.
Basically, ended up doing mine in ten minutes. Plus I was kind of on TVTropes at the same time. And another site. And telling her about MirrorMask. A film that made me say "What?!" every five minutes or so. I highly advise watching it, written by Neil Gaiman and amazing CGI graphics, plus it's a bit od a mind screw.
Back on tangent.
I have about fifteen or so lines of average intro, and in class I end up going through her introduction again on paper making more suggestions/grammar points and then I ask/get asked to do Male E Lit Friends' intro as well. I agree , go through it, make formatting changes, grammar changes, ak for elaborations, suggest this gets moved . . . teacher stuff I guess.
When E Lit Lecturer gets around to our trio I've literally been going over mine for about a minute or two and when he gets to Female E Lit Friend he says, "So what's Koorly said this time?" ((I like helping her with her work, especially the coursework))
"She marked in red this time."
He agreed with everything I'd said and made a few other suggestions. Then he went to Male E Lit Friend, agreed with everything there, told him to tighten the focus, looked at mine: "Yes, that's a good, brisk introduction. Take you long?"
"Sort of, but as you can see, I've mostly been helping these two."
Then Male E Lit Friend said, "You know Lecturer, you should give her half your wages for this." Lecturer semi - agreed.

I'm really proud of that. Sooooo geeky.

:smallyuk:
Whenever I game, I can't have any outside noise because unlike many people, I actually listen to what is going on in game (PC or console). For example, when I play Call of Duty against people, I actually listen for footsteps. Unfortunately, many of my friends will accuse me of cheating. Even if I'm in a completely different room.
I like to have any advantage that I can get.

That's probably the most unique argument I've ever heard for PC gaming. I like both PC and console, but most of my friends play console, so...

PC has Blizzard and Valve games though, (SC and CS ftw :smalltongue:) so I still do that.

One of the things I don't really have to put up with considering that my console is in my room and my Tv doesn't seem to pick anything up apart from BBC1, BBC2, ITV1 and Channel 4. Which aren't good unless CBBC is running on BBC1. I usually stick the radio on when I play video games. KERRANG RADIO is cool.
On another note, hello, I had a powercut tuesday, which meant my dad had to reset the internet router just, good thing to, because I now have a 2 page report on "West Side Story" due in tomorrow (Which was set today because 3/4 of the damn drama class wouldn't listen, bloody eejits).

Sorry, can't help you there, I only started watching Dr.Who in the Christopher Eccleston series (I hope I spelt Eccleston right), but from what I've seen (all of it since Mr.Eccleston), it's absolutley amazing, may The Daleks continue to exterminate until the end of time.
Also, my sister fell over to, yet despite my natural lack of balance and agility, I managed not to fall over and to use my D.T folder as a shield from oncoming snowballs. I rarely have music going either. Not being able to hear the sound when I'm gaming drives me nuts. Only exception is when I'm in vent with a particular friend who has a soft voice. I can't hear her over the game sound, so I turn it off.

The TV in my room isn't connected to the satellite system, so I only turn it on to watch movies. Often while gaming. I actually find myself more able to focus when there's some extraneous stimulus to shut out. But I concluded long ago that I'm odd.
