My friend and I were wasting time in Web Mastering class today, when we came upon a TV Tropes article (Hot Skitty on Wailord Action, for those of you who are wondering) that mentioned Gelatious Cubes. I told him what it was, since he's got very little RPG experience. He then posed the question: "What would happen if you threw a grenade inside one of those things?" I googled it, but go no results.

So here's the scenario: You're DMing a game of d20 Modern. One of your players throws a grenade, which lands inside a Gelatinous Cube. What would happen?

I'd have it deal damage with no reflex save and effectively no burst radius. I might allow it to deal bonus damage, but as a crit (i.e. the player would need to roll to confirm).

To me, it's similar to the question "what happens when I cut off his arm?", in that someone is trying to gain the apparent real-world consequence/benefit for an action which they hope will get adjudicated in their favor due to a absence of rules on the specific thing they're attempting to do.

More to the point, I'd consider a Gelatinous Cube to resemble a non-Newtonian fluid (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Non-Newtonian_fluid) - its viscosity changes when force is applied. This allows it to resist attacks and slam opponents, yet flow enough to move and envelop others. This would mean, however, that the harder you throw the grenade, the harder it'll bounce off.

In short, I wouldn't let a player just call out that they're throwing a grenade inside a gelatinous cube.

What if the grenade had a timer and the cube ate someone who was about to throw it?

I'd call it a confirmed critical. But I agree that you can't just throw the grenade into the cube because you want to. The cube isn't in the business of absorbing random metals thrown at it. But when it senses prey it tries to swallow that meatbag and whatever it might be carrying at the time.
