Hi,

This is my second computer/software question thread on these boards within 2 weeks, so I hope I don't cross any holy limit of something or somewhat.:smalltongue:

Now, I'm working on buying a site/domain somewhere in the months to come and I would like to install a forum on it. Now, I have some bad experience with phpbb forums, can't control the spam, and would like to have some advice on what kind of software would be best both in quality, price and quantity of options.

Now, I hope I could get it for free, but if it is really great I wouldn't feel bad having to pay for it.:smallamused:

I myself would recommend FUD Forum (http://fudforum.org/), which runs pretty much everywhere that supports PHP, is free software, and has a lot of features.

Quick overview of features (http://www.forummatrix.org/show/FUDforum) (This site lists a host of other forums as well, and provides painless comparisons.)

My favorite is Invisionfree. Buying Invision software itself is costly, I think like $150 USD last time I checked. But Invisionfree let's you set up a board that's hosted for free, and still gives you a bunch of options. If you know a bunch about PHP and programming and stuff, and you want extreme control over your board, Invision isn't for you. But if you know little or none about programming, I say go for it.

You can also have your own domain point to the Invisionfree board for no extra cost, and then you don't have to pay for the hosting of the board. Although, I've heard that depending on what hosting company you've purchased your domain name from, setting that up ranges from extremely easy to annoyingly difficult.
