I am surprised no one mentioned it yet. Hell, I am surprised I failed to mention it yet.
I mean, Erfworld is one of the two great webcomics hosted on GitP and it is set in a world of a turn-based wargame where cute little soldiers kill each other in all ways imaginable.

Now Weewar is a turn-based wargame where cute little soldiers kill each other in all ways imaginable. No, unfortunately it does not have dwagons and teddy bears and crap golems (I wish it had though). It rather has tanks and jets and battleships. Think Advance Wars over the Internet. Or Warhammer 40K if you like, but without the Orks.

Anyway, what's good about it is that:
* it is multiplayer (with community being generally nice and polite) - you play games against 1 to 5 opponents depending on a map
* it is browser-based (can be played on any PC with a browser - or even on an iPhone)
* it has relatively simple rules, which are easy to learn, but still offer numerous strategies
* it has hexes
* it is turn-based - with time limits for turns ranging from 5 minutes to 3 days depending on how you set up a game (players don't have to be online at the same time to take turns)
* it has clean interface and cute graphics
* it is free to play (basic account sets a limit of 4 games that a player can play at any given moment and limits a player to a range of basic maps and basic land units) - however, you can enjoy the full extent of fun for a small monthly fee (as low as 2$ a month) - actually, I was a basic player for a few months, but then became a paying member and did not regret that for a second
* it leaves you time for life - online games can be pretty addictive and time consuming at the same time. Weewar is probably addictive, but you can easily limit yourself to 15 minutes of it a day if you want
* did I mention hexes?
* players create custom maps, which anyone can use to play games on (although you have to be a paying member to publish a map and to start a game on a custom map)

Actually, one of the greatest things about Weewar is its community and its business model. You are really playing with people, not against people. And when a paying (or "pro") player invites a basic player for a match, the basic player shares the benefits of being a paying player for the duration of the game, such as being able to build advanced units.
All in all a great game! If you enjoy reading Erfworld, you should probably give it a try.

Or, at least, take a tour:

Things that you might find useful if you decide to join:
* A very good getting-started guide (http://weewar.com/forum/posts/list/132.page) by one of the players
* Unit Specification (http://weewar.com/specifications) - lists unit specs and explains how the battle results are calculated
* Battle Simulator (http://www.plutosforge.com/blog/projects/weewar-battle-simulator) - calculates odds and chances before you engage in actual combat
* would you feel lost, you can always invite me (http://weewar.com/user/Muzzafar) for a game and a chat

Questions?

Looks very nice, I'm gonna give it a try. Would you mind if I copy your post and put it on another forum I frequent. (Most people there would probably like it).

Edit: Signed up on the name Sirroelivan, message me if you're interested in a game.

Absolutely!
Be sure to include your player ID in the link. They have a referral program (http://weewar.com/referrals) - you get 2 weeks of Pro Account for free for every 5 players you "recruited". I paid for a year ahead, but you might want to get a free trial of Pro Account before you consider buying it.
(Go to the picks and badges (http://weewar.com/linking) page, it will generate links with your player ID in it.)

I am limited to 10 games and I am playing 10 games now - so I cannot start new games or join open games. I can accept invites though. Send me one - I will happily accept it. (Make sure you set the game to be "not-rated" - "untick" a corresponding checkbox when you set up a game. General advice: make your first few games unrated - thus you are free to learn and try things without fear of losing points too much.)
Be sure to read the getting-started guide that I linked above. Use Battle Simulator. Good luck!
P.S.: Oh, and don't play 5 minutes rated games with people you don't know - there are boopholes who will boot you out of the game for points the second you are over the time limit.

Having a group of buddies on Weewar really helps to get the full measure of enjoyment. During the year that I spent on Weewar I got to know a number of very good players that I can trust and enjoy playing with. If you have friends from the very beginning it would really be great!
Unfortunately, there is no built-in team-play so far, so team-play is supported through meta-gaming - i.e. by mutual agreement of team players (primarily, that they do not attack each other). :smallbiggrin:
Teams can really benefit from better coordination (which also comes from experience of past team games).

I've also signed up. Pretty cool little game! Reminds me of the old Metagaming Microgames.

Simple gameplay, but things can get quite challenging quite quickly. Great little timewaster.
