I read a book trilogy a while ago where the world utilizes 5 different caster types, none of which overlap on spells or effects, but seem to cover most of the spells for D&D, so I thought I'd give a try at writing them up. For those interested in reading it, the first book is Master of the Five Magics, by Lyndon Hardy.
Allright, so the 5 types of magic here are:
Thaumaturgy: the ability to affect things by manipulating similar things (think voodoo or vudon)
Alchemy: the rather random "science" of combining ingredients into temporary magical effects such as potions.
Magic: the perfect and permanent art of using ritual to enchant items.
Sorcery: the power of the mind, utilizes the schools of illusion, enchantment, and divination, but at the cost of oneself.
Wizardry: the art of burning exotic materials in order to summon demons.
