View Full Version : Music for this scene?

I'm searching for a good music for my next gaming session. The short version is, the group will camp in the Outside World (a jungle, just more evil-aligned) and one of them (who's been searching for informations for a while now) will tell them what he discovered. I need a music for the scene, because it's important.

The long version:
The setting is kind of a Point of Light setting: there's The City, and the Outside World. Outsiders are Beasts and Horrors: the first ones are "just" powerful animals, magical beasts and such things with fangs. The second ones are evil and corrupted dreadful magical definitely powerful... things... that lurk and want to end civilization. The whole "Civilization versus Nature" thing is dominant and fundamental to the setting.
Now, the party is going Outside. They have discovered some weird patterns and intrigues in the city and now they gladly took the first excuse they could find to escape the government and -talk-. One of them, who had a minor "solo" subquest he never revealed to the others, and recently acquired some useful (fundamental, I daresay) informationsis going to explain to the others what he knows.
Now, I want the scene to be remembered, and music helps a lot for that. It could also work as a "group theme" later on, if it is reallygood. I absolutely don't want something exciting, nor combat-like. One of the PCs is in a bad spot anyways, so if I place something that incites to act rather than think, he may be killed on the spot. Not what I want.

The perfect theme would have a touch of mystery, revealed secrets, fear, but also a sweet theme that grows stronger... Yeah, that'd be perfect. I don't expect perfection. But you may have something for me...

It's my first response to any request for atmospheric music...

The firs thing that comes to mind would be the first few tracks on Mike Oldfield's Tubular Bells albums. I and III in particular.

I personally prefer Bal-Sagoth for D&D session when they are at epic levels, if not then maybe Rhapsody of Fire, Symphony of the Enchanted Lands part 2 may be good for it.

Perhaps Fingal's Cave, from Mendelssohn's The Hebrides. It's at times a very mysterious piece. Otherwise, Gondwana Voices' recording of Taivas On Sinien Ja Valkoinien, from their album Voices of Gondwana is very good, if short.

Sorry I couldn't be of more help, but an album that I thought would be awesome isn't in iTunes, so I have no idea how you'd get it. If you can find it, The Tale of Returning Home, from Yu Zhou's Master of the Chinese Erhu, has a relly good opening section, and some of the other tracks could work, too.

Well, the mildest thing I can say is... no, thanks.

Not bad at all... will look into this further.

Well, these groups are nice... but I don't want anything exciting. This works for a bettle theme... not what I have in mind. I need a calm music.

Classical music is not my genre, but the intro might be worth it.
For the Tale... I cannot find it anywhere. So I don't really know.

Oh, and I found one that may be good... but I still look for something better. It's "Meadows of Heaven" from Nightwish.

Maybe something like this (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7-5AZGnZf8k&feature=channel_page) or that (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WyXKXBPjlMQ&feature=channel_page). This (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ee1JuQYjkEo&feature=channel_page) track could be even better for the job.

Zakarum (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VI9ft2JE7iY) from Diablo 2's third act. Most of Diablo 2's music is atmospheric instead of exciting, so this might work well.

EDIT: If you're going to use Meadows of Heaven, the instrumental version would probably work well. I honestly find it a rather strange choice for a game scene that isn't related to a character death, though. It just reminds me too much of the "Aeris Dies" scene from FF7.

Chaos Hero, by VNStudios (http://www.newgrounds.com/audio/listen/198380)
Builds up pretty well, in my opinion. Not exactly what I call sweet though.
Take a dance around the Newgrounds music portal, there is a lot of great stuff, and you can download most of it for free.

Venus or Mercury by Holst.

I dunno what else.

If your looking for a bit more modern music, how about "All Along the Watch Tower" by Hendrix or "Run Through the Jungle" by CCR

"Out side in the cold distance a wile cat did growl. Two riders were aproaching and the wind began to howl"

"Better run though the Jungle.."

It's still considered classical music where I live.

Not what I was looking for, but thanks anyways: I will probably use it later on. And I will definitely use Diablo II a lot from now on. I listened to another couple of musics and they really are beautiful.

I'll search for the instrumental version, probably. Oh, and it's funny that the other music I found meanwhile was Aerith's Theme. You know, my players don't know English (well, not really well) and don't play FF, so I'm pretty sure that the only thing that really matters is the music itself, not it's meaning.
Still looking for more...

Nice music. I like the other ones best, though.

Newgrounds you say... About Chaos Hero... no, thanks. It does indeed build up well anyway.

Aaah, Find Your Way... No, thanks. I already used it before in the campaign and it is now sort of the theme for the Palace.

Anyway, thanks to you all, and please continue. I'm learning a lot.

All of blizzard's music is great for setting atmosphere.

Here's some more that is likely appropriate.

Try looking for the music of Diablo I as well; there's a lot of really creepy music there if you need it. The crying babies still send shivers down my spine.

To help you get started, Nightwish released all of Dark Passion Play's instrumental versions with their collector's edition of that album.

If it's for learning purpose, then maybe check out GitS (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Al4bkGP3fbQ)? After that track, you could go with Ghost City from the same soundtrack.

Meadows of Heaven? If you're going off Dark Passion Play, the instrumental of The Poet and the Pendulum might be a better option...

I just remembered - The Corpse Bride had a really good soundtrack, many mysterious pieces. Perhaps Moondance? By the way, don't bother youtubing it - that is not Moondance, damnit!

If you don't mind my suggestion of another classical piece, Danse Macabre (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YyknBTm_YyM&feature=related), by Saint-Saens, is pretty good. Just find a proper recording - if you can find a Berlin or Bamberger track, it's pretty much guaranteed to be good.
