Seriously.

(Seriously).

What other Random Encounter Table allows you to encounter Power Armoured Displacer Beavers or a DRM-Free Hot Librarian using a bow that shoots sentient sets of lingerie?

There are three columns. For each one roll a d600 (if computerization is available) or a d6, then a d100. So a 1 means 1-100, a 2 means 101-200, and so on and so forth.

With this random encounter chart there are over 216,000,000 results possible.

I keep thinking I should make a ton of templates and base creatures for the various entries, but -

Well, I don't.

I apologize that not all results are awesometacular, but with this much complexity going on some are bound to be a little less fun. Sorry. I also apologize for the handful of inside jokes (like sockbats or rock (or maybe a bush?) ).

EDIT::: 400 results now? Wowee!
EDIT::: 500 results! MADNESS!
EDIT::: 600. AND quite a few results were changed either because they rarely worked (C2 'Boss Of The') or just to standardize them a bit so there Are No randomly capitalized Words.

Description/background/characteristics

Guitar Riffs are elementals of pure guitar goodliness. They tend to keep themselves hidden, traveling around cities looking for a guitarist to appreciate. They try to avoid combat if they can, forcing their would-be aggressors to rock out and fleeing before they can retaliate. They only attack individuals who they see as particularly threatening (aka 'bad at guitar'). It is considered an irredeemable mark of shame for a professional musician or bard to be attacked by a Guitar Riff.

A Guitar Riff looks like five black rings floating in space, with a clef denoting which way they are focusing most of their attention. When the Guitar Riff makes noises, note heads appear corresponding to what was made and travel around the body, making it back to the clef when the note ends. A Guitar Riffs are almost always found in large cities, as rural areas or smaller towns don't tend to have enough guitar work to keep their interest, though a particularly skilled rural musician may find a small flock of them condensing around him.

Combat

In combat, a Guitar Riff will generally try to use its Unearthly Sound ability as effectively and often as it can. If it was attacked, it will generally try to use its flight to get away, often hiding in some obscure gutter atop one of the many buildings in the area. If some one is blaspheming against the guitar, it tends to 'show them how its done' with its Unearthly Sound, then close in and make slam attacks. They then flee right before it wears off.

Just Too Good (Su) :
The Guitar Riff is an elemental composed of pure guitar-goodness. It adds its hit dice as a competence modifier to Perform (Guitar) checks (already factored in the stats provided).

Longer, Not Fatter (Ex) :
The Guitar Riff does not suffer any dexterity penalties for going up a size category.

Unearthly Sound (Su) :
The Guitar Riff lets loose a wailing riff too good to be from the mortal plane. Once every 6 rounds, as a full round action, the Guitar Riff can make every intelligent creature within 100' make a will save (DC 15, the saving throw is charisma-based) or rock out (throw a hand in the air and bang their head vigorously). Victims that fail this save are considered flat footed and dazed the round after they stop. They continue headbanging for a number of rounds equal to the Guitar Riff's charisma modifier. Additionally, if the victim failed its saving throw by 5 points or more, it must drop every item it is carrying and pretend it is playing along. This is a mind-affecting, sonic compulsion effect.

Musical Healing (Su) :
As a being of pure music, hearing mortals make music can help mend any wounds it may have taken. Every round a Perform (Guitar) check is made by a non-elemental creature, a Guitar Riff gains a number of hit points equal to the Perform check -5. Guitar Riffs are actually harmed by poor guitar playing and are likely to attack individuals blaspheming the Holy Instrument (ie, getting perform checks under 6 consistently). Additionally, a Guitar Riff can gain temporary hit points from this (maximum determined by their hit dice; 2 temporary hit points can be had per every hit dice) and they last a number of minutes equal to the Guitar Riff's charisma modifier, however, the check must be at least twice their hit dice +5 to give them this effect.

Immunity to Sonic (Su) :
Guitar Riffs are immune to sonic damage or any spell with a (sonic) descriptor.

Vulnerable to Silence (Su) :
Any magical silence effect causes negative levels to be bestowed upon the Guitar Riff equal to the spell level it was at. For example, if a 2HD Guitar Riff was subject to a Silence spell and failed its saving throw, it would be killed instantly. If a 3HD Guitar Riff failed its saving throw, it would be considered a 1 HD Guitar Riff for the duration of the spell.

Elemental Traits (Ex) :
A Guitar Riff is immune to poison, sleep, paralysis, and stunning. Since it has no clear front or back, it is not subject to critical hits or flanking. A Guitar Riff has Darkvision up to 60' and cannot be resurrected except by a Wish or Miracle.

And because it came up... The template for

Breakdancing

Breakdancing is a template that can be either inherited or acquired, and can be applied to any corporeal creature.

Size and Type
The base creature's size and type are not changed, except if the template was applied to an animal. It then becomes a Magical Beast.

Hit Dice
Do not change.

Saves
The Breakdancer gains the feat 'Lightning Reflexes' which results in a +2 to reflex saving throws.

Skills
The Breakdancer always considers Perform (Dancing) a class skill. If it is of a type that cannot learn skills (for example, vermin), it gains a racial bonus equal to its hit dice.

Armour Class
The Breakdancer gains a +1 dodge bonus to AC.

Special Attacks
The Breakdancer gains the ability to call forth a Dance Fight. The Breakdancer then begins breakdancing (a rigorous and complex series of motions) as a full round action. Opponents within 15' have two options: they may either accept the Dance Fight or they may ignore the Dance Fight.
If they accept the Dance Fight, they also begin breakdancing (and makes an opposed Perform (Dance) check). The winner of the Dance Fight inflicts 1d6 points of damage (the Breakdancer can make any amount subdual that it wishes) on the loser per point that their check surpassed the loser's.

Alternately, the opponent can ignore the check. The Perform Check is considered the Breakdancer's AC, and the opponent takes 1d6 points of damage per class level (the attacker's class level, not the Breakdancer's, and once again the Breakdancer can make any amount of the damage subdual) if it misses, due to the Breakdancer using its fly moves to trip up and use its uncultured enemy's tactless maneuvering against it. If the enemy wants to cast a spell, it must make a concentration check that surpasses the Breakdancer's Perform check, else it is disrupted.

The opponent can choose to ignore the Breakdancer if it wants. Creatures not within 15' are not affected. This is an extraordinary ability.

Unusually Short Spaghetti-covered Yardsale - Cursed potions of healing half off!

Ok, before the yardsale closes I quickly grab some spaghetti off the stuff so I don't have to use my trail rations, and then buy a few of the cursed potions to slip to enemies (or at least resell if I can't use them, since with 50% off I can get the same price back selling them to some other merchant).

Self-replicating Crying Tombraider

I dominate it and use it to finish Tomb of Horrors for me. It needs to be self-replicating since things die there so quickly, and of course in ToH there's lots of reasons to cry. ;)

Helicopter riding Cursed Gelatinous Pyramid

Gelatinous Cube's have Int 0, so I assume a Gelatinous Pyramid isn't any smarter. Since such a creature (especially if cursed) is no way capable of knowing how to fly a helicopter, I run and get out from underneath it and wait 30 seconds or so until it crashes in a big fireball. ;)

Some one got a Lovecraftian Anti-Lovecraftian Monk (somehow). I'm here to prove it can be done.

Column 1: Pseudonatural template.

Column 2: Horror Hunter Prestige Class!

Column 3: Duh.

Horror Hunter

"Here comes Azathoth, here comes Azathoth, right down Azathoth lane..."

Sometimes, the horrors that lurk beyond the minds of even the most knowledgeable of sages are known to great heroes. Great unsung heroes, but they are heroes none the less. Sometimes the heroes collapse in on themselves, becoming husks of gibbering madness. Sometimes they just die, and in death suffer horrors thousands of times worse than if an Arch-Fiend got its unfettered paws on their soul. And sometimes, sometimes... they win. Sometimes, they win twice. And maybe, just maybe, somewhere out there, some glorious soul makes a living off of hunting these monstrosities.

Becoming A Horror Hunter
Horror Hunters are incredibly rare. After all, their prey is as elusive as it gets.

Weapon Proficiencies:
A Horror Hunter gains no new armour or weapon proficiencies.

Mind Like A Vice
The Horror Hunter cannot hunt his quarry without being observative and intelligent enough to predict the most unpredictable actions. The Horror Hunter may roll two dice when ever asked for a spot, search, or decipher script check and take the higher. Additionally, he may 'take ten' on will saves a number of times per day equal to his wisdom modifier. This is an extraordinary ability.

Play By Our Rules
Any aberration of outsider from the Far Planes within 15' of the Horror Hunter cannot use any Spell Like Abilities unless it has gotten them from class levels (a warlock, for example). Any insight or profane bonuses are lost. This is a Supernatural ability that can be suppressed as a free action.

I Cannot Destroy You, But
If the Horror Hunter attacks or casts a spell that is reduced by damage reduction, resistances, or immunities, the target takes subdual damage equal to that which was blocked. If it is immune to subdual damage, it must instead make a will save (DC = damage that would have been dealt + any damage that was dealt by the Horror Hunter in the same attack) or be banished back to its native plane. Additionally, a Horror Hunter gains a +5 bonus to spell penetration rolls. These two abilities only works against outsiders from the Far Planes, and is a supernatural ability. This ability applies to any equipment the Horror Hunter is using - if it steers a boat into a giant horror's head, for example, or if it throws an alchemist's fire at a horror immune to fire.

Gibbering Begone
The Horror Hunter is immune to wisdom drain and wisdom damage. Additionally, any other statistic damage or drain against him is halved (round up). Lastly, he also grants this ability to any allies who are not an outsider from the Far Planes or an aberration within 5' * cha mod (if he has a cha of 0, he does not exude this aura).

Begone From This Place
Any aberration or outsider from the Far Planes within 5 * cha mod (min 5) of the Horror Hunter loses access to all of its supernatural qualities. Additionally, if it was an outsider from the Far Planes, the Horror Hunter gains a free attempt to banish it.

Poorly Drawn
This template can be applied to any corporeal creature except an ooze.

Miss chance: Any attack against this creature has a 20% miss chance for hitting some color outside the lines instead of the creature itself. This stacks with cover, but not blur or similar spells.

Jaunt: 3/day, the creature may teleport up to 15 feet as a free action. This is not actual teleportation, but revealing to have been in the other place all along with bad perspective.

Not discernible: the creature has no discernible anatomy (or discernible anything else) and is therefore immune to critical hits and precision damage.

May I incorporate this in to my random monster generator?

I don't know. Can I get some more info?

(As you can see) I've sunk a lot of effort into this and I think it's fairly self-contained. I'm a little leery to throw permission away without a clue. I'm sure you understand.

You are missing a 122 and 225 from the first column.

You have two 256s, and 257s in column two.

and you have two 11s in the third column.

also (having received permission via PM):

My monster generator (http://pifro.com/dnd/NEW/nyu.php) will now generate random monster names using this table.

It will not retain the name if you use 'Generate Monster', however. I will alter that later.

Oh gosh darn it. I did all the organizational work by hand and I appear to have screwed up some how.

Well, time to fix it. (Obviously 2 from C1 fell into C2 somehow, now I get to go back and figure out which ones. And then start a long string of deleting and retyping numbers. :smallfrown: )

I would recommend viewing the lists in a program that produces the row numbers itself. Which is how I noticed (the program I code in).
Notepad++ (http://notepad-plus.sourceforge.net/uk/site.htm) for example.

Oh, not to mention, regular expression replacement (which would let you quickly delete all numbers).

Notepad does do it, I just don't pay attention. Kind of preoccupied, you know?

Anyways, found them. Schrodinger's. Just doesn't work in the second column (an adjective before it makes it seem awkward and cumbersome, for the most part. There are always exceptions). The other is Precariously Effeminate, I think, but I am looking at the list harder until I'm sure...

EDIT:: Yep, looks like. It's what I'm doing to my master copy, shortly followed by a that-copy.

EDIT2:: To be clear, I'm not upgrading for senseless stubborn fear of change. Next time I want to work on this list (ie, expand it to 400. I know I will some day, it's just a few months / years off) I'll probably look into it.

Another useful template, I think:

Imaginary

Imaginary creatures can be anything to anything. They are testaments to the strength of belief. Feeding off of perceptions, they can quickly overwhelm a party that should have easily bested it. Likewise, a knowledgeable person with no actual chance of defeating its real-world reflection could destroy legions of them.

It is for this reason that they are relatively rare, and often avoid others of their own kind.

Size and Type
The base creature's size and type are not changed, except if the template was applied to an animal. It then becomes a Magical Beast.

Hit Dice
Do not change. For the most part.

Special Qualities

Figment of Your Imagination (Su) :
The imaginary creature is based heavily off of perceptions of it. All of the following abilities only work when consciously observed by sentient creatures. Whenever it exceeds the DC of any given check by 5 or more (or the DC of an ability exceeds the target's saving throw by 5 or more points), it gains a permanent +2 bonus to the check in question. This bonus is cumulative.
Whenever one of its defenses repel an attack (an opponent missing its AC by 5 or more points, a spell penetration failing to beat spell resistance or damage resistance by 5 or more points, etc.) it gains a +2 bonus to that quality. Whenever damage reduction completely negates an attack, that damage reduction increases by 2 points. Whenever fast healing or regeneration return it to maximum hit points, the respective trait increases by 1 point.
Whenever it deals 10% or more of a target's health in a single blow, it gains a +1 bonus to that form of damage. Multiple percentages stack, so dealing 30% of a creature's hit points in one blow equals a +3 bonus to damage. Unlike the other forms, this only applies if the target had at least 3/4 the HD of the imaginary creature.
Whenever an imaginary creature dispatches a seemingly powerful foe (such as the biggest ogre in the tribe or the party's powerful sorcerer, it gains a hit dice.
Likewise, the opposite applies. Failing a check by 5 or more points results in a permanent -2 penalty. Having damage reduction, resistances, or spell resistance overcome by 5 or more points results in it diminishing by 2 points (minimum 1). A creature making a saving throw by 5 or more points results in a permanent -2 penalty to the DC of the ability. Dealing an insufficient amount of damage to overcome damage reduction or that removes less than 5% of the target's health results in a -2 penalty to damage. An attack roll exceeding its armour class by 5 points or more reduces it by 2, and taking an obvious blow or setback (like the fighter punching out its teeth right before it bites his head off) causes it to lose a hit dice. So on and so forth.
These changes are permanent and can only be reversed by having the opposite happen. Not even a wish can restore a badly beaten imaginary creature to its former glory.

Unbelievable (Su) :
A successful knowledge (Arcana) check (DC 5 + HD) will reveal it for what it is - an imaginary creature. After this, you can inform any one who cares to listen (though that may take some convincing). Any one can make a wisdom check to disbelieve the creature (DC 10 + 1/2 of the imaginary creature's HD). If successful, the imaginary creature takes 1d4 points of constitution damage per point of charisma modifier (minimum 1d4). If the creature does not have a constitution score it instead takes 1 point of damage per hit dice both the target and the unbeliever has (added together). This point of damage can only be healed at the rate of 1 per day or relevant spells of sixth level or higher (harm for undead, for example, or creation spells for constructs).
Other things can be affected too, assuming it does something suitably impressive or mockable. Be it the speed from chasing down the PC to the flight's maneuverability category to the creature's size rating, imaginary creatures rely heavily on the power of perception to fuel their agendas.

Type Info
Fey
A fey is a creature with supernatural abilities and connections to nature or to some other force or place. Fey are usually human-shaped.
Traits
A fey possesses the following traits (unless otherwise noted in a creature’s entry).

* Low-light vision.
* Proficient with all simple weapons and any weapons mentioned in its entry.
* Proficient with whatever type of armor (light, medium, or heavy) that it is described as wearing, as well as all lighter types. Fey not indicated as wearing armor are not proficient with armor. Fey are proficient with shields if they are proficient with any form of armor.
* Fey eat, sleep, and breathe.

Subtype Info
Fire
A creature with the fire subtype has immunity to fire. It has vulnerability to cold, which means it takes half again as much (+50%) damage as normal from cold, regardless of whether a saving throw is allowed, or if the save is a success or failure.

Swarm
A swarm is a collection of Fine, Diminutive, or Tiny creatures that acts as a single creature. A swarm has the characteristics of its type, except as noted here. A swarm has a single pool of Hit Dice and hit points, a single initiative modifier, a single speed, and a single Armor Class. A swarm makes saving throws as a single creature. A single swarm occupies a square (if it is made up of nonflying creatures) or a cube (of flying creatures) 10 feet on a side, but its reach is 0 feet, like its component creatures. In order to attack, it moves into an opponent’s space, which provokes an attack of opportunity. It can occupy the same space as a creature of any size, since it crawls all over its prey. A swarm can move through squares occupied by enemies and vice versa without impediment, although the swarm provokes an attack of opportunity if it does so. A swarm can move through cracks or holes large enough for its component creatures.

A swarm of Tiny creatures consists of 300 nonflying creatures or 1,000 flying creatures. A swarm of Diminutive creatures consists of 1,500 nonflying creatures or 5,000 flying creatures. A swarm of Fine creatures consists of 10,000 creatures, whether they are flying or not. Swarms of nonflying creatures include many more creatures than could normally fit in a 10-foot square based on their normal space, because creatures in a swarm are packed tightly together and generally crawl over each other and their prey when moving or attacking. Larger swarms are represented by multiples of single swarms. The area occupied by a large swarm is completely shapeable, though the swarm usually remains in contiguous squares.

Traits

A swarm has no clear front or back and no discernable anatomy, so it is not subject to critical hits or flanking. A swarm made up of Tiny creatures takes half damage from slashing and piercing weapons. A swarm composed of Fine or Diminutive creatures is immune to all weapon damage. Reducing a swarm to 0 hit points or lower causes it to break up, though damage taken until that point does not degrade its ability to attack or resist attack. Swarms are never staggered or reduced to a dying state by damage. Also, they cannot be tripped, grappled, or bull rushed, and they cannot grapple an opponent.

A swarm is immune to any spell or effect that targets a specific number of creatures (including single-target spells such as disintegrate), with the exception of mind-affecting effects (charms, compulsions, phantasms, patterns, and morale effects) if the swarm has an Intelligence score and a hive mind. A swarm takes half again as much damage (+50%) from spells or effects that affect an area, such as splash weapons and many evocation spells.

Swarms made up of Diminutive or Fine creatures are susceptible to high winds such as that created by a gust of wind spell. For purposes of determining the effects of wind on a swarm, treat the swarm as a creature of the same size as its constituent creatures. A swarm rendered unconscious by means of nonlethal damage becomes disorganized and dispersed, and does not reform until its hit points exceed its nonlethal damage.

Swarm Attack
Creatures with the swarm subtype don’t make standard melee attacks. Instead, they deal automatic damage to any creature whose space they occupy at the end of their move, with no attack roll needed. Swarm attacks are not subject to a miss chance for concealment or cover. A swarm’s statistics block has “swarm” in the Attack and Full Attack entries, with no attack bonus given. The amount of damage a swarm deals is based on its Hit Dice, as shown in the table.

A swarm’s attacks are nonmagical, unless the swarm’s description states otherwise. Damage reduction sufficient to reduce a swarm attack’s damage to 0, being incorporeal, and other special abilities usually give a creature immunity (or at least resistance) to damage from a swarm. Some swarms also have acid, poison, blood drain, or other special attacks in addition to normal damage.

Swarms do not threaten creatures in their square, and do not make attacks of opportunity with their swarm attack. However, they distract foes whose squares they occupy, as described below.
Swarm HD Swarm Base Damage

Distraction (Ex)
Any living creature vulnerable to a swarm’s damage that begins its turn with a swarm in its square is nauseated for 1 round; a Fortitude save (DC 10 + ½ swarm’s HD + swarm’s Con modifier; the exact DC is given in a swarm’s description) negates the effect. Spellcasting or concentrating on spells within the area of a swarm requires a Concentration check (DC 20 + spell level). Using skills that involve patience and concentration requires a DC 20 Concentration check.

v6.0!
The standard "another 100 have been added to each category" but in addition to that I standardized (or tried to) the use of capitalization. Nothing was QUITE as irksome as seeing randomly Capitalized words, so You know, I figured That maybe I should fix that.

I've been using a program called Inspiration Pad Pro 2 to automate the actual rolling process for myself for the past couple iterations, so I finally thought to let you guys in on that action. (It's free)

Robo-illithids, here we go!
"LOBOTOMIZE!"

Or a Dire Mr. T.
Impossible, Mr. T is already a dire monster.

How does a highly respected crocodile wrestling beehive work?

A local hive of benign giant, intelligent bees, which is in a lucrative trading relationship with the local humanoid village, is set upon by an army of crocodilian enemies - and needs the help of the party!

So awesome.

Hmm, maybe I should have actually read the thread before manually removing the numbers from all 1800 entries and putting them in a giant spreadsheet to roll.

Alright, on to the monsters.

Some of the best I rolled on v4.00:
Obliviously Rocket-Propelled Internet Meme.
Otiluke's Irresistible Trenchcoat-clad Dwarf.
Reincarnated Alkaline Chainsaw
Misgendered Pyrokinetic Sentient Sword. Not particularly funny, but it gave me an awesome idea for an intelligent weapon.

And 10 random new ones from the new table:
Submarine-Riding Sumo Wrestling Zorro
Nine-Armed Glowing Ostrich
Acidic Spaghetti-Covered Trailer Park
Guest-Starring Gnoll-Riding Rabbi
Rancorous Cheeseless Scientologist
Regally Adorned Warforged Sackboy
Drugged Kung Fu Pink Floyd Reunion Tour
Land Of The Secret Paste-Eater
Piney Blood-Drinking Sticks (from snakes)
Creepy Dire Gelatinous Cube

Hey, my party's just about the right level to fight that trailer park! This table rocks!

Um, the first post has been edited to V6.0 so... yeah. Now you probably feel EXTRA silly.

I'm trying to figure out which internet meme is oblivious AND rocket-propelled, though. Hmm.

I'm really looking forwards to throwing "Gadget-Laden Amplified Deaf Knight" at my party, though.

Notostigmomorphic implies biology similar to a specific clade of centipedes...

Also, "Unfurnished Tooth-Collecting Witch That Will Turn Into a Marionette" sounds like something terrifying and creepy and very workable in a horror movie.

there'll be a Syrupy, poisonous ochre Jell-O, which almost makes sense.

Except rolling a d100 6 times won't work. 'cause then you'll get a bellcurve, ranging from 6 to 600 with 300 being the most common result.
Instead, you could go to the "Dice Rolling Subforum".
