The Story:
The Legend of Artemis and Rae
Prologue: Artemis and Rae
Once, a long time ago, there were twins named Artemis and Rae. If you looked at them you would not see much abnormality, but you would be mistaken. For, you see, they were both very skilled magi. Rae, the brother, was very skilled in the magics of fire and destruction, on the other hand Artemis, the sister, was skilled in the magics of the moon and healing. Their appearances were as different as their magic. Rae was tall, broad, and handsome, with hair the color of flames dancing in the night. Artemis was small, sleek, and beautiful, with hair the color of the full moon on a starless night. Their eyes were as blue as the deepest pools of crystalline water. Their magics, different as they may be, worked wonderfully well together.
Chapter 1: The Flight
Though they were very skilled in their magics, they were not always so. As small children they had powerful magics, but they had no control. Rae actually destroyed an entire village at the age of 5. At the same time Artemis healed an entire village of the Plague. That was a great show of power, but magic drains on your reserves of energy. After their magical energy was drained, it was like they did all of the work with their own two hands. Needless to say, they were in their beds for a moon. In that time their father went away, and he never came back. About 4 years later they were beginning to gain much control over their gifts, their mother was killed, and they personally tracked down the killer. They released their wrath upon him, and, needless to say, he was never seen again.
With their mother killed, and not knowing where their father was, they left the village in search of some kind of refuge. They first found a small hut in the outskirts of a small village, about fifteen miles from their old village. It seemed abandoned, but it was not. A group of three bandits, one centaur and two humans, had taken up shelter there, and when they returned to find Artemis and Rae in their hut they were none too happy. The Bandits tried to take down Artemis and Rae, but they failed miserably. Many of Artemis and Rae’s potential homes turned out the same way.
Eventually, they found a shelter in the mountains and decided to make that their home. Little did they know, there was evil working in the mountains. The evil was a very dark necromancer living in those mountains with his armies of the undead. He saw that Artemis and Rae had taken refuge in the mountains; he also saw that they were very skilled magi. He had formed a plan, he went to the children in the form of a dwarf, and tricked them into showing him their abilities. He then used his dark magic to absorb and copy their abilities. However, they were more powerful than him, and he lost control of the power and it collapsed upon him. After seeing what their powers did to the seemingly nice man, they fled the mountains.
Chapter 2: The Dæmon King
Little did they know, there were even greater works of evil in those mountains, for, you see, the necromancer that they had unknowingly killed was a servant of the dæmon king Thalkan. Upon sensing that one of his loyal servants had been destroyed, he set out to find who did it. From the power of the servant that was destroyed, Thalkan easily deduced that the culprit was a great magus. Since Artemis and Rae still didn’t have full control over their powers yet, it was easy for Thalkan to track them, by sensing the magical energy that leaks out of all powerful magi who lack total control over their magic. After a week of tracking them the dæmon king found Artemis and Rae.
When Thalkan found Artemis and Rae’s camp, Rae was out getting firewood, and Artemis was seemingly asleep. Thalkan couldn’t believe his luck, he found the magus he was looking for, and she was vulnerable. Thalkan was making his way stealthily to ambush Artemis when she suddenly snapped alert, for she was not truly asleep, she was in a sensing trance. While Artemis seemed to be asleep, all of her senses were multiplied tenfold, except for her sight, as her eyes were closed. When she sensed Thalkan’s presence she sent a telepathic message to Rae telling him to come back to the camp.
While Rae was coming Artemis decided to test Thalkan’s power. She engaged him in combat and was beaten, badly. However, just as Thalkan was about to land the killing blow on Artemis, Rae ran into camp with a lance made of pure flame in his right hand and a pillar of flame jetting from the other. He took Thalkan by surprise, as Thalkan thought there was only one magus, and managed to not only stop Thalkan from killing his sister but wound the dæmon king. Faced with another very powerful magus Thalkan was forced to flee.
Chapter 3: Changes
Just after Artemis and Rae’s encounter with the dæmon king they were travelling around the land in search of some sort of refuge, or at least some means of employment. Suddenly they were attacked by a large group of barbarians. The barbarians were fierce and they attacked from all sides, but they weren’t expecting their opponents to be powerful magi. Rae summoned a wall of fire around he and his sister, while Artemis launched hundreds of arrows made from pure moonlight at the attacking horde. However, something was amiss, the arrows were having little to no effect on the barbarians and they were slowly dousing Rae’s fire. Seeing that their weaker magics were having no effect on the attackers the twins summoned their greatest magics and combined them into an all-out attack. A wave of pure Fire and Moonlight launched from the magi and crashed down on their enemies.
When the havoc caused by their spell ended Artemis and Rae saw that there were at least three-score of their enemies left. In a last ditch effort to save his sister and himself Rae grabbed one of his fallen enemy’s swords and stood between his sister and the approaching enemies. At that time a change came over Rae. The sword in his hand seemed to become lighter and it became engulfed in a clear blue flame. His fighting stance became more fluid and natural. His clothes also changed. His worn, dull-brown traveling leathers became more flexible and were now a dark red. He was a Fire-Sword, the greatest of the Knight Magi of old.
Into battle the brother rushed, and faced with this new challenge his enemies faltered. The Fire-Sword moved with amazing speed. Before they could ready their weapons and defend themselves three of his enemies fell. The barbarians tried to retaliate but the Fire-Sword had caught them by surprise. He had taken another four of his enemies before they could figure a way to try and defeat him.
In the excitement caused by this new challenge most of the barbarians had forgotten about the sister. The sister also had a secret that even she didn’t know of. Seeing her brother rush into battle, Artemis wished that she could become strong. While her brother was fighting the barbarians she had been throwing all that she had left at a score of the barbarians. It did her no good; in fact it caused her to be put in to even more danger. The score of barbarians Artemis had attacked were now coming after her. Just as the barbarians reached Artemis a pale light surrounded her. She then saw images there was an image of a child and an image of a full moon, slowly they drifted together, and eventually they became one. At the moment that the images combined a change came over Artemis, she began to glow with a pale light and her robes became a silver-grey.
The light disappeared and the Moonchild Artemis appeared. With a wave of her hand she engulfed her foes in a pale light. They disappeared, but they were not dead, where they went, only Artemis knew. Artemis was a Moonchild, her brother a Fire-Sword, together they were nearly unstoppable.

I started this story for my 7th grade newspaper, and I really liked writing it. I hope you enjoyed reading it as much as I enjoyed writing it. Any feedback is appreciated. I'm hoping to update 2-4 times monthly, so check back once in a while.
