Why would a conjurer be teleporting armies accross worlds , if he's dead, shouldn't he have been a transmuter, because teleportation was a transmutation spell at the start of the comic?

Maybe they mean conjurer not in a literal game rules sense, but more as a title for the actions he did. I mean really calling someone a transmuter just doesn't have the same zing to it.

I would assume that rules changes apply retroactively unless there is some indication against it.

The Giant's joke about the schools and the gaming-system changes was just that: a joke. You're taking him far too seriously; we should assume that the world has always been 3.5, and snicker politely about the "my daddy was a first edition thief" cracks. Otherwise, there's a whole host of things that don't make sense.

Well, it explains why V can't teleport, which has a lot of story implications.

Maybe he only died recently?

Epic mage or no taking over worlds takes years.

Well, it explains why V can't teleport, which has a lot of story implications.

...which could be explained by saying V banned Conjuration because shi didn't think Teleportation would be all that important.

Or how 'bout this: the rules of magic changed retroactively during the switch to 3.5...but V, as a PC in the middle of a campaign, didn't get to rebuild hir class features just to get what would be most useful.

If that's true V has an intelligence score of 10.

But that is not the explanation we've been given, and that's not because we haven't been given an explanation.

I'm opposed to pretending something the author isn't pretending, on principle. :smalltongue: I agree that we shouldn't overthink whatshisname being a conjurer, but as far we "we should pretend the setting has always been 3.5ed," stop the bus, I want off.

Well, just because he was a Conjuration specialist doesn't mean he banned Transmutation. Thus, he could still be a Conjurer and do teleporting.

Plus, there's precedent for NPCs being retroactively updated to at least 3E (the halfling rogue Serini talking about multiclassing to Paladin is absolutely absurd prior to 3E).

We'll compromise. "We should pretend the setting has always been 3.5ed UNLESS it gives Rich an opportunity to make a joke about the rules." Actually, I think that's similar to his explanation about whether or not to change the order to 4E.

As Grey Watcher said, he could have both the conjuration and transmutation schools. Thus he can port around and summon armies both before and after the rules revisions.

As for V, the change was retroactive for him as well, but it was just too late to respecialize. Both his argument with Belkar and recent events indicate that he realizes just how important teleportation is.
