As a... veteran of sprite comics.... I'm going to put this gently.

Oh god, my eyes.... my eyes....

Actually, there are some jokes that I laughed at! "As a pikachu recolor I have to try my hardest to not be adorable..." "try harder"

But ah, its apparent you have no experience in sprite work.

for one, MSP will be your bestest best friend ever. See how your resizes got all blurry? Very undesirable in a sprite comic. I can hardly see your charactors at all. Sprites are about the fine detail, the individual pixels. When they get blurred out... well, its kind've hard to see what they're doing or how they're looking. Not to mention you got... wierd borders around some from the resizing... a good preventitive mesure would be to resize only by factors of 100... so 200% 300%... again, just MSPize, Inkscape, or anything else, is bad crap fior anything but special effects for webcomics.

Your edits are very simple or bittage mixing. I'm more okay than most with people mixing thier bittages in-comic, but on the same sprite, like with Ghengis Kong and the snorlax... ew. It looks... terrible. Very hashed together, very awquard. the resizing doesnt help... And your color choices are very poor. Flaundermouse and Scott are decent recolorings. That dinosaur does not look good at all...

Backgrounds are sparse, but I know more than anyone how much of a bitch it is to make good backgrounds, and they're not eye-blaring, so its okay.

I dunno, in general, it kind've looks like you know what you're half doing. And I have faith in you since you held a very long running comic. But you are very, very inexperienced in sprite comicing ways, a genre flooded with very poor art. The jokes cant hold this up. I wish I could find some sprite tutorials... but dammit, that day and age has passed... *grumblemumble*...

First of all, I'd like to say that, although I appreciate your advice, I would like to say that as far as I'm concerned this comic is focused ENTIRELY on humor and the art can go $#@%!& itself. :smalltongue:

If MS paint will get rid of the blurriness, I will try it out. I've tried everything to get the characters clearer while all being the scale I want them to be, and Microsoft Paint will solve that problem, I will try it. I've always forund that program to be quite unuserfriendly if that term means what I think it means, and I always get quite frusterated if I try to use it. I'll still try, though, if it means a solution to my blurriness problem.

As for resizing and stuff, screw you! :smallmad: (:smalltongue:)

As for the recolouring, how the heck can my colour choices be poor?! What the heck does that mean?! :smalleek::smallconfused: Also, the dinosaur is supposed to be like that! :smalleek:

Anyway, no, I cannot draw sprite backgrounds. I have downloaded a bunch from various internet sites that I'll be using as much as I possibly can at every single oppertunity I see, but few can fit into the comics I've made so far. So the backgrounds will be sprite-y, but only when it makes sense for the story.

I dunno, with the dinosaur, it just doesnt...blend. The colors jarr against one another instead of working together... guh, I cant explain it. It's like how orange and red dont go together, I dont know how to know it. Just look at it and think "does this look good, natural?"

It really depends on the comminity that you're from... I was basically from a very, very high end and demanding sprite comic comunity... this would get torn to pieces there in its prime, actually XD;

Most other places... yeah, I suppose most would just roll with it, accepting it because thats what sprite comics are artwise.... I hate that sterotype. waaahhh *runs off*

Actually, with my last comic I just forgot to use it.

Although now that I am using it a little in combination with my beloved Corel Draw PHOTO-PAINT 8, I actually find I like the blurriness instead of the pixilated. It just looks more "right" to me.

But, since it makes it hard for the eyes of the audience, I have used Microsoft Paint with my latest comic a fair bit.

Yeah, if you want to expand something, it's usually best to use Stretch/Skew and Stretch the same length for horizontal and vertical. Otherwise it looks blurred and weird.

I actually think it's a pretty good colouring job. Especially compared to some of mine. I wouldn't make jokes about that. :smallwink:


Out of curiosity, could you include characters made by readers if they provide an entire sheet? Put them in as "unlockable characters" or something?

A very intersting question indeed.

I've thought about it for a while, and I still haven't come up with an answer for that.

See, in my first comic My Name is Q, I had no ideas for banners (which, coincidentally, I have no ideas for banners now either) so I got the chumps audience to make the banners for me and the best one will earn the artist to have a character of their creation become an important character in the comic, leading to the character Zuy Civid.

Since it was successful, I have no ideas for banners for Super Smash B-list, and because I think you have to EARN a cameo like that, I am highly considering holding another banner compitition (making it a tradition) with the reward of your character starring! :smallbiggrin:

However, since it is technically a sprite comic, I am reluctant to hold another banner compitition because I am unsure of who would make them.

So my question is this: if I were to annonce another banner compitition, Would anybody submit anything? :smallfrown:

If you are talking about the banners, yes. You will be alowed to submit as many banners as you like, just like in my last contest. I will be rewarding for quality rather then quantity, though.

Actually not. More of an alternate histroy for the character. I think that SSB-List wouldn't make a lot of sense in ABR continuity. And since the future of Sprite Wars looks pretty bleak, I think I'll re-use the villains I had crafted for it in my newest comic so they do not go to waste.

Just a little note, Mario and Sonic don't actually hate eachother. Mario is just understandably grumpy under his circumstances and Sonic is overcompensating for not being in the first or second Super Smash Bros. games. They are both quite good friends. Really.

Also, I would like to annonce that you may notice the art in this comic signifigantly improving! There are two reasons for this:
1) I have found out some new secrets about my chosen drawing program. That it used to automatically blur things and why. I have found out how to disable this!
2) I have been working on how to create my OWN sprites! Not just recolour, but actually create my own! Soon, with practise, I may even be able to replace Genghis Kong's grummy old template and CREATE MY OWN ART!!!!!! :biggrin:

Also, I would like to annonce that you may notice the art in this comic signifigantly improving! There are two reasons for this:
1) I have found out some new secrets about my chosen drawing program. That it used to automatically blur things and why. I have found out how to disable this!
2) I have been working on how to create my OWN sprites! Not just recolour, but actually create my own! Soon, with practise, I may even be able to replace Genghis Kong's grummy old template and CREATE MY OWN ART!!!!!! :biggrin:

I have quite a setting for my adventure that is well planned out, but I have left it purposely unexplained. Do you think I should explain the setting of the story, why the videogame characters are alive, and why videogames are both electronic games AND live performances? Do you want to learn more about Sprite City?

F: None of the above. Mostly because I don't really know how else to answer this.

They aren't horrible characters, but I just can't get a good feel for them. With some of them I know almost nothing about their personalty. This may have to do with the fact that you are using so many at the same time.

They all had individual introduction strips (except for Pete and Haunto, who were introduced in the same strip) but a single strip isn't really enough to get a feel for a character.

I don't really have advice on how you can fix this at this point. I am hoping you will figure out some. Also I want you to know that I do like this comic. I wouldn't even bother posting here if I didn't.


Edit: If you were referring to the general idea of the characters (such as a dinosaur with a hammer that can turn invisible) then I would like to change my vote to A and you can just ignore that other stuff.

actually, I would love to make those kind of issues. throw everyone for a loop, make the situation even more absurd, and watch the fan theories fly and snigger at how inaccurate they are while folding any hate mail into paper airplanes or fans in case I need to cool myself off on a hot day :smallbiggrin:

I've found them all here (http://sdb.drshnaps.com/BackgroundsDS.htm)and here (http://sdb.drshnaps.com/BackgroundsGBA.htm). However, you may have to edit the backgrounds, and selecting a background for your comic out of those already made backgrounds does take a bit of an open mind.

It is not self-insertion. Haunto recognizes Training Mode for a different reason. I will say no more, just so I don't spoil any possible surprises, but that it will be revealed in time. Relax, everybody.

Also, I don't understand the whole concept of Mary Sues and whatnot. Or how it's a bad thing. As far as I can tell, it's a character that is based loosely on the writer. Really, that makes the most sense to me. You would know the most about yourself, so why not have that be your character?

And really, any character you make is going to have a little resemblance to you. Because you're writing for them! I can understand how people might just want to avoid the trouble in a main character.

And how it's a bad thing, I have no idea. It's your comic or whatever, you should have the ability to write any character you choose. Suddenly these characters can't even share any traits from the writer whatsoever?!

This is especially stupid, since, say for example the writer was morally decent, you can't have any morally decent characters without them being Mary Sues?

Anyway, sorry to rant. I'm just saying because, once I put one of my characters in a computer-generated "Mary Sue" questionnaire, got a high score, and was given the answer of "You fail character creation forever. Please stop writing". I mean, I didn't intentionally model this character after myself, but if I did, so what?

The problem with Mary Sue's and Gary Stu's is less that they are based on the writer, and more that they are based on the writer's ideal fantasy of him- or herself. A well balanced character who interacts with the story well and happens to reseamble the author in personality or appearance isn't a Mary Sue. However, if the character has unrealistic power to influence the outcome of the story (even given the initial premis of said story) it probably is a Mary Sue even if it doesn't immediately appear to reflect the author.

A typical Mary Sue is extremely intelligent, popular, athletic, etc. and has no flaws. If the Mary Sue does have a flaw, it is not something that inhibits the Mary Sue's ability to influence events and often comes across as an endearing trait (such as being naive or a klutz) rather than a flaw per-se. Nothing bad ever happens to a Mary Sue, or if something bad does happen, it is only so that the Mary Sue can suffer nobly.

Saying something fails and not giving any explanation as to how or why is just plain needless, obnoxious, and stupid.

Just so I do not fail by my own logic, allow me to explan WHY I believe this fails.

This fails because it was originally posted in my comic's thread by Megadoomer, who in turn only posted it because the Randomizer asked not to link to TvTropes. I respect the Randomizer and his request, because sometimes the snarkiness of TvTropes does get to you. However, Megadoomer has taken this image (from the Randomizer, from what I can tell) and posted it to enforce a fake law not to link to TvTropes.

In summary, he only posted it because the Randomizer "told" him to. He blindly decided to go along with the Randomizer's message and took it way too far. While Rand only puts it in his signature to kindly request people to not annoy him, which is completely fair, Megadoomer goes out of his way to cram this down the throats of people who believe otherwise. Is this comparable to anything in real life? Religion, perhaps? I will say no more, so that this thread is not locked and I do not recieve an infraction. Only that Megadoomer fails.

Secondly, I have to say that the term "fail" has been thrown around carelessly. A lot. This I believe to be a fail in itself. Fail is now used to describe the slightest of mistakes, like tripping on the sidewalk. Something anybody could do accidentally, and something that is not a mark of stupidity. This is not fail. It is a mistake.

Here should be the true definition of Epic Failure: An act which is done intentionally, in which sets apart stupid and smart. Which could not be achieved by anybody who could tell their ass from their elbow. It is a mistake that somebody got violently harmed as a result of. It is something that will scar for life.

None of these things descibe anything "fail" has been used to describe on this thread.

I would also like to say that TvTropes, while perhaps slightly cynical and insulting, is a legitimate organization with decent, if perhaps slightly opinion seeded, information. It would be like making a law never to link to Wikipedia. Or to any website anywhere. Sure, you can kindly request not to, and if you put it in your signature I'm sure people will cut down when talking to you, but don't cram it down anybody's throats that they can't link to this website.

And let's face it: TvTropes usually does a pretty good job of explaining something.

Lastly, I would like to point out that I took the time to post this message, rather then take the time to make a comic. I don't know if any of you actually like the story and wish for me to continue writing for it, but if you do this may be an incentive that you might want to stop arguing about this.

Hey, I'm just the messenger. The annoying messenger that you're certain reads all your mail without permission, and really deserves to get fired except that his boss can't get anybody else who can do the job well enough, and you really can't prove it, anyways, but he's always being so sarcastic, saying things he's only saying to annoy people and doing all he can do get fired, except that the stupid boss is too much of a coward to risk it, and so you just have to put up with him, since if you don't he might actually just not deliver your mail, he's done it before, you're sure of it, though you can't prove that, either.

Anyway, Self-Insert doesn't always lead to Mary Sue, and not all Mary Sues are self-insert, but the too often correlate.

Mary Sues are bad, Self-Inserts are hard to pull of properly.

I'll say this about Japanese RPG games, they may suck, but they have some pretty damn good backgrounds. :smalltongue:

Yeah. I kinda had trouble with the door. I'm not really good with obeying the laws of perspective. :smallredface:

And that is Yogi Bear. Sort of. A recolour of him.

I was going to recolour them all, but after the third recoloured character I got lazy. That's why Popple, Chatot and a few others are completely normally coloured.
