2009-02-26, 09:44 PM
Well, since Vote Up A Villain is on hiatus, I've decided to give you folks the chance to get one for your very own!

That's right, I will craft for the winner a complete villain in the format of VUAV entries. Each user is allowed two submissions, which must be sent to me via PM. You must provide, in order, all of the answers to the following riddle. All answers can be found within D&D related sources (novels, sourcebooks, magazines), and all can be found on the Internet.

The Conjuring

Ten drops has he suffered, to where he now lies
In a Pit below Pit where benevolence dies

Mother of princes and children in chains
Shrouded to minds that cannot explain

Daughter of nightmare and serpent of doom
Eater of terror's from sleeping mind's womb

Traitor to evils, the one of three faces
Deep in a red prison, the lord of three races

Living weapons from a world most far
Wage heinous war below the stars

Frozen away in a horrible dark
Land of deadly ice shards like the teeth of a shark

Home of the shapers of terrible skin
Once was a dragon - now dark lies within

Red he is lord of, and lord the most high
among mortal lords of the great lords of the sky

In far icy banishment ever do sleep
Those beings who cause ev'n immortals to weep

So, there are nine answers? One for each verse?

afroakuma
2009-02-26, 10:23 PM
That is correct.

arguskos

If we submit our first one, will you tell us what we got wrong?

afroakuma

Yep! Hence the two.

There are some obscure things in there, so I felt I'd make it a bit more fair.

Llama231

O.O

So, what is it exactly that we are looking for?
Specific villains?

afroakuma
2009-02-26, 11:06 PM
I require the components of evil.

Some may be planar evils, others may simply be eldritch horrors or villains native to specific campaign settings. One of them is a place, and one a race of creatures.

arguskos
2009-02-27, 04:32 AM
Of those that are setting specific, are they specific to any given setting, or does the setting vary? (Basically, are all the setting specific ones from the SAME setting, or different ones, or does it even matter?)

Also, congratulations. This is REALLY FREAKIN' HARD. :smalltongue: (but I have 5 so far!)

Adumbration

Damn. This is just too hard. I haven't managed to figure out a single one - every idea I had just didn't quite fit.

arguskos
2009-02-27, 06:09 AM
Yeah, some of them are... BRUTAL, to say the least. Number 4, 5, and 8 are amazingly difficult, and I'm struggling. Number 9 I... very tenuously have, but I'm not that sure about it. :smallannoyed:

afro, you seriously made a scary hard quiz. :smallsigh:

The first and last I know, but can't be bothered figuring out the rest.

The first is from Fiendish Codex II, the last is from the Epic Level Handbook.

Also: please no offering hints or planting decoys. If I feel it is too challenging I will make changes as needed.

If nobody gets them all right, does the person who got the most right win?

afroakuma
2009-02-27, 11:22 AM
I'll consider it... it will depend on a few things.

afroakuma
2009-02-27, 03:46 PM
The current leading number of correct answers is four, by the way. And most of those are the easy ones.

SlyGuyMcFly

I´m even gonna try, but I assume the answers will be posted when/if someone guesses them all?

afroakuma

Yes indeedy.

One of those clues may not be perfectly accurate; I may need to replace it.

But I doubt that's a concern, since so many others have been baffling thus far. :smallamused:

Four hmm... seems like I'm doin' alright then! :smallcool:

Also, how long have you had this in your pocket afro? A while, looking for the right time to use it?

Oh, and are these all from 3.5? Or are some from older editions (because if they span editions... >_<)?

afroakuma
2009-02-27, 04:27 PM
Also, how long have you had this in your pocket afro? A while, looking for the right time to use it?

A fair amount of time, yes. A sibling plan is prepared for after VUAVX takes place.

Oh, and are these all from 3.5? Or are some from older editions (because if they span editions... >_<)?

Technically, they span editions and campaign settings. Dragonlance, Forgotten Realms, Greyhawk, Eberron, Planescape and Spelljammer are all potential candidates, though I guarantee one of those has no representation at all.

One is technically from a far-off edition, though I know of one reference in a D&D 3.5 product.

o.O?!? THIS is the bleeding heart quiz?! I've got a pretty solid knowledge of these things, and I'm struggling here. :smalleek: This is... wooow.

In other news, "Living Weapons" and "Traitor to Evils" are giving me fits. Beyond that, I'm pretty sure about the others. :smallannoyed:

Here's hoping my effort is worth the trouble.

afroakuma
2009-02-27, 05:00 PM
Someone already solved "Traitor to Evils."

"Living Weapons" is intended to challenge, though.

Rated by difficulty:

Ten drops Suffered: 1
Mother of Princes: 2
Eater of Terrors: 7
One of Three Faces: 4
Living Weapons: 7
Land of Deadly Ice Shards: 4
Once was a Dragon: 1
Lord the most High: 6
Ever do Sleep: over 9000

arguskos
2009-02-27, 05:10 PM
>_<

I feel bad that I can't seem to figure out the freakin' Traitor to Evils and Living Weapons. That one specifically is breakin' my mind man! Freakin' internet quizzes.

afroakuma
2009-02-27, 05:12 PM
Which one? Living Weapons?

Nassty things they were, too.

arguskos
2009-02-27, 05:37 PM
ARGH! SO UNDESCRIPTIVE! ARGH! >_<

I've run through a number of possibles, and gotten nowhere. Bionoids are my top bet at the moment, but they're not really "bad guys", just engineered weapons. Like, if I had some evil version of the bionoids, I'd be all over that one. As is? No freakin' idea. :smallfurious:

It might also be the Rhul-Thaun... but they are A). a race, and B). NOT REALLY EVIL. :smallfurious:

My brain hurts. Hell, at this point, it could be ****ing PRIMUS for I all know. Also, that'd be awesome. :smallwink:

:sabine: approves of your quiz's difficulty. This better be worth it.

Magnor Criol
2009-02-27, 07:03 PM

It's a free homebrew villain from afro. Of course it's worth it. Would free golfing lessons from Tiger Woods be worth it?

Why is it that the so called "easy" ones are the worst for me? Ah well, the prize is in sight, I MUST KEEP TRYING!!

And afro, though this is insanely hard, I love it. I'm looking forwards to another one in the future! :smallcool:

afroakuma

Not yet I don't. I need the final two: Mother of Princes and Traitor to Evil. *sigh* Need some more time for those... since I'm still unsure about them. Damn, I was so sure that one I had for MoP was good. Argh...

Also, I want to see the HARD one (oh, and I want to break my brain on it XD).

Also, ARGH #2/4. >_<

Magnor Criol

Magnor Criol

You underestimate my perfectionism, my good man. =p

I'm going to get a "good idea" for most of them before I spend a guess.

And first I've got to go study for that differential equations test coming up, or else I'll never get anything done.

I just have to hope no one else has some flash brilliant insight in the meantime. =p

afroakuma
2009-03-02, 12:05 AM
The contest has ended!

And nobody could solve that silly little ninth puzzle.

Very well, for survival of the fittest purposes, the winner is arguskos with 7 of 9 correct answers!

For those of you who were curious:

Ten drops has he suffered, to where he now lies
In a Pit below Pit where benevolence dies
Asmodeus, Lord of the Ninth

Mother of princes and children in chains
Shrouded to minds that cannot explain
Pale Night

Daughter of nightmare and serpent of doom
Eater of terror's from sleeping mind's womb
Dendar the Night Serpent

Traitor to evils, the one of three faces
Deep in a red prison, the lord of three races
Apomps the Triple-Aspected

Living weapons from a world most far
Wage heinous war below the stars
Witchlight Marauders

Frozen away in a horrible dark
Land of deadly ice shards like the teeth of a shark
Ocanthus, Fourth Layer of Acheron

Home of the shapers of terrible skin
Once was a dragon - now dark lies within
Khyber, the Darkness Below

Red he is lord of, and lord the most high
among mortal lords of the great lords of the sky
Duulket Ariakas

In far icy banishment ever do sleep
Those beings who cause ev'n immortals to weep
Esoteric knowledge is kept from thine eyes
But the solver shall earn a commensurate prize

Congratulations, arguskos!

arguskos
2009-03-02, 12:12 AM
Yay!! My work pays off!

Now.... the big question is... uh... what now? It was stated that the prize was a villain, in VUAV-style. However, how would you like me to go about this? Just present my ideas/opinions? Let you have a blast with it?

afroakuma
2009-03-02, 12:17 AM

The rest of you: I'd go look at the ninth answer if I were you...:smallamused:

Magnor Criol

Ritzin' fritzin' sassafrassin' internet was out at my apartment. I couldn't log on to send you my answers! :smallmad: Oh, well, I didn't beat arguskos' 7 anyhow.

Let's see...Asmodeus and Pale Night I got right off the bat. Khyber took a bit longer, because I was trying to think of individuals or races first, and didn't consider places, until I was browsing through an Eberron book and the phrase "the dragon below" hit me like a ton of bricks. Ocanthus came soon after that.

All the others, though - Dendar, Apomps, the Marauders, and Duulket - I never had a chance. I don't know any of those settings well at all (though I've wanted to read more on Planescape for a while).

Well, maybe I'll get lucky enough to discover riddle nine, yet.

afroakuma
2009-03-02, 01:38 PM
Riddle Nine is virtually impossible. Seriously. Take it to Wizards' board, Mythweavers or anywhere else and see if you can get help cracking it.

evil-frosty

Now arguskos will you be sharing this villain?

Perhaps I should have attempted this.

afroakuma
2009-03-03, 10:29 AM
There's still the ninth one. Anyone who solves it gets the same prize.

You can even post your guesses publicly, if you like. As it won't matter, number nine is impossible.

Aargh, forums ate my post. I edited, saying that I can't find a couple books that I thought I had access to, and was too lazy to look through. Eh, I'll go find them, unless you can comment on that list.

No, I can't, because I'd already confirmed that it was on the previous list. If I confirm the current list, it means the removed books can be excluded from consideration. If I do not, it means the removed books are the source.

So no, I won't be commenting. And I don't intend to comment on any more lists.

You should be able to weed out some of the less likely sources.

Mmm, true. I didn't think of that. No matter, I found one of them anyway (the Codices).

Yeah, right. (@ find it, not your hoping) I've really only been playing D&D a couple of years, and sporadically to boot.

You'd have had to have been playing for well over a decade to be expected to have any familiarity with this thing.

For the rest of us, a casual brush with the knowledge is all one can possibly expect.

Hold on--I might actually have a teensy chance at this.

I opened up my Codex to a random page, and found "Special--Ulgurshek is not a demon lord, but an ancient entity created before the formation of the Great Wheel". He is apparently a 'draeden'.

Wiki: In the Dungeons & Dragons role-playing game, draedens are massive, ancient beings that predate the multiverse. Draedens have conflicted with the immortals (or deities) in the past. The 92nd layer of the Abyss, known as Ulgurshek, is actually a draeden who lay dormant while the Abyss formed around it. Other draedens may exist in dormancy deep within the Paraelemental Plane of Ice, entrapped in similar fashion to Ulgurshek, eons ago by the waxing reality of the Great Wheel's inner planes.

Am I grasping at straws?

EDIT: "I gave a little nod to it in turn by inserting the Demiplane of Draedenden into Dragon 353." In Dragon? You said that...

Are. You. Kidding. Me.

Do you realize the epic chances I just surmounted? Statisticians everywhere are moaning.

Forums and smilies fail to illustrate the "WHAT?!" and "OHMYGOD?!" I am currently experiencing, as well as the high heart rate of excitement.

...seriously, what are the chances? :smalleek: I should have entered the lottery...

Uhhh... yeah, I do. I had to go pull that piece of profound lore out in the first place.

You are being PM'ed your prize info.

To the rest: thanks for playing!

Hmm. Two questions:

1. Is there actually a prize? Because that would be... ridiculously awesome... EDIT: Ninja'd by the ninja of ninjas

2. 'Prisoned by fact in dark fantasies reaching
primordial knowledge forms dark lady's teaching' I don't get it. Can you explain?

afroakuma
2009-03-04, 12:43 AM
That would actually be from Ulgurshek's info in that same book.

Prisoned by fact
Ulgurshek was trapped when the Abyss formed around it.

in dark fantasies reaching
There aren't many fantasies darker than the Abyss. Also "fantasies" in the concept of beliefs, as the Abyss is an Outer Plane and thus shaped by ideals.

primordial knowledge
Draedens are older than the Great Wheel. They have a heck of a lot of info available.

forms dark lady's teaching
Lolth communes with Ulgurshek, who gives her strategies and information from his own time.

The last one--where did you find that?

Oh, I get it. Those were really good riddles!

Of course. :smallamused:

The last one--where did you find that?

I don't even remember how I first stumbled upon them... it was before I read the Fiendish Codex...

AH! Yes, I recall now. I was studying up on the most ancient, most secret lore of the multiverse, and while researching beings who would give even these extreme creatures pause, I happened to catch mention of them.

IT WAS JUST DRAEDENS?!?! DAMN YOU AFRO!!

I was expecting something FAAAAR more diabolical and special, not just the freakin' Draedens. :smallfrown:

I mean, seriously. They don't make SQUAT weep, since nothing EXISTED when they did!

Of course, it was amazingly obscure, and very much unknown to most people, but I was expecting more than that. I was expecting something more "Elder Evil" scaled, not just beings that don't exist anymore, because reality confined them.

Note: Way to go Lord Zarth. I had considered Draedens, but dismissed them on the grounds of being too well-known. Looks like I was too analytical. :smallannoyed:

Aww, last night after Afroakuma posted that the answer was somewhere in the books, I looked at the clock and decided to go to sleep, next morning beginning the search. I had already narrowed it down that the answer would be either somewhere in the theme books (Lords of Madness, etc.) or one of the Codexes.

I should've stayed up all night... :smallfrown:

Your mistake. :smallamused: I'm frankly surprised you know of them.

Incorrect. They waged war against the Immortals to stop the formation of the multiverse. The only reason they agreed to peace is because they decided to just wait it out and then come back with a vengeance.

Of course I do. They're pretty damn neat, and I like neat things. :smallwink:

[Citation Needed] From what source do you draw this? I am guessing.... Planescape, 2nd Edition, meaning I wouldn't have known about it, because I didn't get heavily into esoteric planar knowledge until recently.

Oh well.... I could have had a 8/9, but damnit, I over-analyzed. :smallsigh: It's not that I didn't get 8/9, it's that I overlooked the answer right in front of my face... like an idiot. /facepalm
Anyways, excellent job Zarth. You should feel proud, you managed to score a prize, and only had to solve one riddle!

You said one of the things was only mentioned once in a D&D book and was actually mostly from another game, right? Was that Draedens? What other game are they in?
