Contracts are actually for people with things to enforce.

In this case, Vaarsuvius' side of the bargian. Vaarsuvius has no "recoiurse" now when the fiends decide to keep Vaarsuvius' soul or end the Splice early, no contract, no legally binding and enforcable contract anyway.

And all that talk about "playing it straight"? They said it three times, in different variation. When someone does that, they are lying. Vaarsuvius is screwed, and it was all Vaarsuivus' own fault.

Well, assuming one is lawful evil, we might (might) be able to expect that V will get what she bargained for. However, since it is lawful, and no contract was signed, V might still be screwed.

It's possible that it's as straight up as the 3 fiends say. V uses the power to do whatever needs to be done to stop the dragon and save the children. Then the fields get his soul temporarily and do something that will be even worse then a big black dragon eating V's children.

Nothing was intentionally hidden, V simply didn't ask what the fiends were going to do with his spliced soul.

If they'd had hir sign a contract, they would have had to state explicitly whether or not they only got control of hir soul after she died. Maybe it only works for them if she only assumes this.
