View Full Version : Happy Square Root Day!

This occurs when the day and the month are both square roots of the year. Today is 03/03/09, and 3^2=9, there you go. The last one was February 2nd, 2004, and the next one won't be until April 4th, 2016, so you better do your celebrating now.

I guess the last one will be December 12th, 2144, or something, but most of us don't have to worry about that. :smallwink:

xn = xn-1 - f(xn-1)/f'(xn-1)

And now you can approximate them.

But its fun! How can anyone not like maths?

And the Newton-Raphson can be used for more than just square roots. Fear it surds! You shall be approximated!

I blame the international date line and time zones for this.

If I calculate correctly,

May 5, 2025
June 6, 2036
July 7, 2049
August 8, 2064
September 9, 2081
October 10, 2100
November 11, 2121

Are the part of the sequence for this millennium.

I guess pi day is in about 11 days

Wish I'd found this earlier today so I could of told some people about it v.v

Hooray for basic multiplication.
Boo to anti-mathematic sentiments.

Damn, it's 4th already. Oh well, just 7 years 'till the next day like this.

Hooway, math. Fun concept. Glad I heard about while it was still the 3rd, at least for another 20 minutes. Can't really do much celebrating, but yeah, fun stuff.

...yes, that w was intentional. I'm really not sure why. It just felt like a better choice. :smalltongue:

Alright. Everyone who is bothered by this, I posted at about half past noon on the third. I am quite certain of what day it was. My computer, my phone, and my calendar all concurred on this point. I apologize if you live in an inferior time zone.

It was my first wedding anniversary on 03/03/09, so I did have a good day. I live in GMT+8, so didn't see your thread in time, but I don't blame you, cos I was out having fun instead.

Gosh, that's pretty awesome. Now your wedding anniversary is extra special! You'll be able to tell everyone it was on square root day, and they'll be like, "What the heck is square root day?" Everyone will be so jealous.

I noticed that too.

It would be pretty impossible to form an actual square root day though unless it's at least 10,201AD.

First of January: 01/01 = 101
101^2 = 10201

Fine. Square root day falls on the days on which both the day and the month are the square root of the year minus two thousand, if you want it more precisely defined. :smalltongue:

Oh well.

2025 = 45*45. April fifth, 2025, maybe? Or you could have it as the year being the square of the day of the year, which would make it January 14th, 2025. Unfortunately, the next square is 2116 when we'll all be very old or dead.
