View Full Version : Draconian Wars: A Dragonlance Military Campaign

"Teyr is the capitol of a growing Republic, the nerve center of a power empire. Founded originally centuries ago by Hill Dwarves seeking the deposits of iron, lead, and other resources of war and trade, it is unknown how long the Dwarves had inhabited Teyr, but it is known sometime after the First Cataclysm it was abandoned and left to mold and rot for over 400 years through the age of despair and through the first act of the Age of Mortals, the 5th Age of Krynn when the Gods left Krynn yet again as part of their deal with the High God to protect their creation from Chaos. While this may had been a lie and in reality the Queen of Darkness Tahkisis had in fact in secret stolen the world, it led to a great good. Without the Gods of Light to give purpose to the "Good" aligned races the Draconian Race had only to contend with those aligned with Evil, the Knights of Nereka in their quest for a new homeland.

With a map given to them by an opportunistic hill dwarf Commander Kang of the First Dragonarmy Engineers Regiment led his weary men through a trial of fire (literally) to a Draconian held for commander by Machiavellian General, Maranta. The Knights set a force of Thirty Thousand goblinoid soliders to wipe them out and nearly succeeded had it not been for the Engineers and Kang's leadership after Maranta's death. Victorious, but not unscarred the Dragonarmy Engineers left the Fort followed by the surviving Draconian soldiers of the fort and headed north to Nordmaar where Teyr lay before them.

The Draconians rebuilt the city, epitomizing their principles of utilitarian military designs that signified functionality, with a "decayed" aged look to give the appearance of age, to give the feeling that they as a race were older then they were utilizing the services of traveling Dwarven and Elven architects.

Now Teyr's Greatness is for all to see, spread out over-"

"REVELIE! RECRUITS GROUP!"

The group leader, Lieutenant Cadet Tandaza Leer, a female Sivak immediately threw the history book she was reading and cupped her hands around her mouth like a megaphone

"GROUP! Stop Idling by and MOVE! Last one out I will see to it will dig latrines for a WEEK!"

Suitably motivated you immediately roll off your cot which you had assembled just 10 minutes ago when you first arrived on base, you run out of the tend in the rushed mass of recruits and officer cadets towards your predetermined positions, you all try to get into your proper places in line but it is a mess, Tandaza has is swiftly moving back and forth trying to bring all of you to your correct spots in the line of 12 recruits in between 2 other lines of 12 recruits. Your Training company finished assembling in formation in ust about under 15 minutes.

You notice a Bozak, angry looking and proud timing everything you have a feeling of whats going to happen.

He puts his gnomish pocket watch back into his uniform, he walks to the beginning of the formation on your left and walks all the way to the other side in silence, so powerful his presence that rather then giddy chatter all were quiet. Soon in a time that seemed like forever he made his way back to the front. He spoke, and he spoke with authority and experience, you heard him clearly event hough he didnt appear to have raised his voice to address all the other recruits. He started to pace 30 feet to the left and right as he did so.

Recruits. I am Sergeant Major Rajnir Zatar, of the His Excellencies The Queen's Own Division, 2nd Republican Guards Regiment. What I saw here today was complete and utter bullcrap recruits, did you call that forming up? It was the most despicably disorganized mess I have ever seen you half of you don't even have the half baked excuse of not even being DRACONIANS! For the Half of you that WERE Draconians, what in Our Dead Queen's name was that!? Your Draconians for crying out loud! Had our Forefathers fought and died to bring you into the world for nothing? For the next generation to be a bunch of Pansy Elves? (A couple of "said" Elves stiffened at that, but Rajnir seemed to ignore them) Careless Kender? Is that what you are? Are you half Kender?

Silence persisted for only a few moments before Tandaza yelled, "No, Sergeant Major!"

"And the rest of you?"

"No! Major Sergeant No!"

"Good, progress, I can make Soldiers out of you yet... Now here's the part where I explain what we are doing here.

You see, here's our thing, the Republic that you have all mostly all of you been born and raised in, is under attack by Goblins, Vermin, and Barbarian Humans. Our Colony at their border despite over a year of peaceful co-existence was brutally attacked and every resident slaughtered to the last. A call has gone out for volunteers to join the army and fight for the republic, you... have all answered that call.

Some of you do it out of pure patriotism, a deep fire of love for your county burns in your heart and you would rather die in its defence then see it fall apart, well, here's the kicker. That's stupid. Me and your other drill sergeants will teach you to fight and not just that but to teach you to fight well and smart, to use your advantages to most effect while minimizing your own disadvantages, you are not here to die for your country but rather to make the enemy die for his. Am I right Recruits...?"

"Yes Sergeant Major Sir!"

"Good, others of you do it for the money, can't fault you there, thats how I joined up, others do it for the adventure, for a controlled way to see the world, and then there's those who joined to become citizens and cast yuor vote in elections and plebiscites. Thats almost like patriotism, so its good enough for me. Pleasing me, will be your personal pleasure for the next 6 weeks. Here's what we're gonna do, we will train you how to drill, march, and react instantly without thinking to orders. All these things will always be useful and used through your military career. After that the basics of hand to hand and simple martial weapons training will be given to EVERYONE, during all of this you will all be put into considerbaly physical endurance training, a modern soldier must be able to march for roughly 12 hours carrying over 70 pounds of equipment on your back not even counting your uniform and armor for the entire duration will only a limited number of rest breaks. We will train you to accomplish this, for you will become Soldiers of the Republic, do I make myself clear recruits?"

"Yes, Sergeant Major Sir!"

"Good. All of you will begin your military training at 0600 tomorrow morning sharp, dismissed."

Not quite dismissed as our group leader quickly informed us, as the Warrant Officer of the Queens Own came by and guided us around the base. The Queen's Own Headquarters was located in The Bastion, a walled complex containing the Senate Hall (or the Hall of the Thanes as its sometimes called), the Chancellery, the Governor's Palace, the Republic High Command. However doing the Republic's military training there would have been bad logistics, so Fort Huzzad a large military base on the outskirts of Teyr was picked and staffed by the Queens Own to train new recruits. We were moved around the Complex, shown the rest of the Barracks (really more of a miniature military standard tent city), the mess hall, the officers and non commissioned officers quarters, and of course as the Warrant officer gleefully pointed out the latrines which he said "we would all get very well acquainted with". At the end of the day at 2100 Hours they escort you back to your tent, in the barrack-tent is 11 others.

//All of you guys start off in the same place, after a little while you guys ill be split off into two groups.

Raccoon sits through the lecture with her eyes unfocused. She'd been one of the first few in line, and had heard variations of this same speech before - from more impressive beings, it's true, but from less impressive ones as well. To her credit, the Kagonesti did not react to the "pansy elf" comment. She understood. He had to scare the new recruits, motivate them. She keeps facing forward until the beginning of the tour, then whispers to Araneshyi "What do you think?"

Araneshyi

Standing stock still throughout the talk Araneshyi listens away keeping her eyes focused entirely to the front not waving and shouting her responses back along with the rest of the group.

When the tour starts she leans across to Raccoon and whispers away

"I think he likes to shout alot, and half of these are liek scared little bunnies. The other half are full of arrogance, I wonder what they will actually be like. Eh well, as long as we still have each others back."

2100 hours

Walking back into the barrack tent Araneshyi looks around and brushes a lock of platinum-blonde hair out of her striking blue eyes. Looking around she waves at everyone and heads over to Raccoon.

"Hey again, so what do we think of the whole complex and what the next 6 weeks we have instore? Reckon anyone will fail?"

Sitting down on the end of Raccoons bed she crosses her legs and sits facing her, whilst still glancing about looking and everyone else in the barracks-tent-thing.

Tsilak

The large Sivak on the bunk next to Raccoon's speaks up. "I wouldn't be surprised if either of you didn't make it." He smiles at the two, an easy smile rather than a malicious one. "Not that I would blame you. After all, you're not one of us. I'm Tsilak. What are your names?"

Raccoon raises one of her eyebrows. Her reply is delayed a few moments as she measures out her words. Tsilaks words don't seem malicious so she'll let them slide - at least until she can do something about them "My name is Raccoon, and assumptions like that could get you killed under different circumstances." It's not a threat - she's cautioning him with a bit of honest advice.

A tall, broad-shouldered draconian steps inside, ducking his head to avoid the edge of the tent. When he straightens, his shoulders pull back naturally and his head slowly pans the room, taking in every occupant. It's not military bearing, however, that keeps his back ramrod straight or his head held high. From the hue and perfect shape of his scales, anyone can see that he's one of that rarest breed of draconians, the Aurak.

Nodding gravely to a group of Baaz standing near the entrance, the athletic-looking dragon-man moves to a corner of the tent and pulls a small leather-bound book out of his belt. After one last glance around the tent, he opens the book and begins to read, seemingly uninterested in joining the social groups that have begun to form around him.

Tsilak chuckles in his deep baritone; the sound is similar to an avalanche. "Maybe. Can't blame a guy for having a good opinion of himself and his people. Better than having no self-confidence eh? So what made you volunteer? The money?" He glances at the Aurak for a moment before focusing once more on the two non-draconians.

Barlenor didn't revel in the thought of basic training. The countless hours his father, a lifetime military man himself until he was injured in battle and partially crippled, made him march and taught him the nature of attack and defense had instilled in the young warrior a grim knowledge of the reality of what was ahead: Hard, labor-intensive work designed to break a recruit down into putty, then build the putty into a soldier. Still, it was a family tradition since his great grandfather, who gained citizenship for the family by service, and whose male descendants had proudly followed their patriarch into the formations and bloody destruction that the grinding of the machines of war brought.

Though he disagreed with the needlessness of it all, Barlenor knew that the armies of the Republic must march for the defense of the Kingdom. He would march with them, and hopefully make his father proud of him.

Raccoon nods "Was the best paying avaliable, and I'm willing to bet my last copper that this campaign will be a long one. You have expendable resources, a poorly defined goal, and with as much support as all of this has garnered it'd be a stupid politician who didn't try to ride the wave for all it's worth." She slides back into a reclining position on the bed. "And politicians may be many things, but stupid is rarely one of them."

Tsilak considers her words for a few moments before frowning. "Expendable? Us? They wouldn't do that to us. Their job is to look out for us. And in return we look out for them. And we have a goal: defeat the scum that are trying to take us over." He nods to himself, obviously pleased.

"Surely you don't actually believe that? Politicians do what is best for politicians, they do what will give them greatest public approval, and right now that would be to crush the goblins. Protecting the nation is just an added bonus for them.

Sure we have a goal - to kill all the goblins that are invading this land, but this would've happened with or without the politicians intervention, they just whipped everyone into a frenzy to give them a better shot at getting re-elected, don't fool yourself, the politicians are doing this for the politicians.

And be wary my friend, there is such a thing as too much self confidience, it gets you into tight spots that you can never get out of alone."

With that parting shot she looks across again at Raccoon and pushes her over backwards onto the bed gently.

"Oh im Araneshyi by the way."

Tsilak frowns. "Maybe that's how your politicians operate, but I refuse to believe power is their primary goal. That's the path that leads to...trouble. And I don't have too much. And besides, if I get into trouble, I have my squad-mates to help me out. Oh, and I'm Tsilak. Nice to meet you both."

Raccoon shoots Araneshyi a look that all but says 'watch it.' Let the boy have his illusions. It hardly matters to them what someone else thinks about politicians, and there is no good to be had in causing an argument first day in camp. Instead she just smiles at Tsilak and teases "you already said that."

Kerrick had been very quiet for most of the proceedings, pondering as to why his order had asked him to join the military. No way he would ever become someone like the great War Wizard Magius. But still, it seems at least the company will be good.

The wizard sits at a bunk studying his spellbook,a tiny weasel chitters on his shoulder, then hops off Kerrick and makes his way to the center of the other recruits, chittering and being a ham.

Kerrick laughed and took of his hat, going in to gather the young weasel and plopped him back on his shoulder.

"You must excuse him, Repeki gets exctited at such spirited debate. I'm Kerrick by the way, apprentice wizard to the Tower of High Sorcery here in Teyr"

He made his way abck to his bunk, and retrieved an elegant pipe lighting it and taking a puff.

"Would anyone fancy some Solamnic pipeweed?" he said offering the pipe.

Good to be here! Would have posted sooner but The Giant updated the comic, so we all know how hard it can be to get a connection :)

The Sivak looks down at the weasel, and then its apparent owner. He studies the man curiously. "You're studying to be a wizard? And still volunteered? Impressive. I'll bet you're going to be a Red, aren't you? Oh, and I'm Tsilak. What's your name?"

"Why aren't they training you mages in your own unit? It would seem that you don't need to learn the same things that the more martial minded would need to know." Barlenor offers his hand and shakes with a firm grip.

"I'm Barlenor, fourth-generation of my family to serve. If they keep us together, then my place is in front of you, holding the line with my shield and hammer while you break their backs with spells."

Kerrick nodded his hello to Tsilak

"I just told you my name Kerrick, and yes I am hoping to one day have the honor of wearing the Red Robes" he said with a bit of a laugh.

The young wizard shook Barlenors hand warmly.

"I wish I knew the answer, I dont even have my staff or scrolls. Damn conscripts took everything from me until basic is over. Apparently my Master thinks I'll be of more use here than rotting in the tower studying spellbooks. he's a strange old man, but I like his methods"

The female Sivak Tandaza stands up with exaggerated sense of self importance, hands behind her hips: I am Lieutenant Cadet Tandaza Leer, I have been assigned as your group leader during your 6 weeks here, I have already completed my first three and am thus here to help all of you better fit in. The reason why Mages are ere' is because ALL members of the armed forces must know the basics, how to follow orders, how to march in formation, to stand at attention and be at ease, protocol must be known. He just as any other mage must know how to properly address superior officers as well as how to address your subordinates. Basics. "repeats it again for emphasis as if speaking to children "Basics"

"Now, any questions recruits? Lights out by 2300 Hours so we DON'T have all day, -or night as the case may be."

Raccoon dawdles until lights out, entertaining herself watching others and doing basic maintenance on her equipment. When the forced lights out comes she folds her legs on top of her bed and enters trance. She comes back to consciousness four hours later and starts on those daily chores any soldier is expected to do with practiced ease, not bothering to get a light. By the time the call goes out to wake everyone up she is lounging with her back against her bed post, her bunk expertly made and gear well stowed. She keeps her eyes on the floor in front of her and a serious look on her face - if the lieutenants think her too self satisfied they'll make her do the whole thing over again just out of spite. If anyone is having too much trouble, she will help them. Not out of compassion, but because everyone getting everything down as soon as possible is good for her.

"Hey there big guy im Araneshyi, i know you might like to keep yourself to yourself, but i just wanted to introduce myself, i'm a priestess of Chemosh by the way."

With that Araneshyi will wander back over to her bed and try to get comfy before lights out.

When the morning comes and she has to sort all of her stuff out Araneshyi starts to have difficulty with sorting her bed out. without looking over to Raccoon she tries to fix it then notices an extra pair of hands - with Racccoon helping her and going slowly so she will be able to do it herself the next time.
