Yeah it's an NPC tactic. Well not anymore!
1. Kick Improved Counterspell because it doesn't fit here.
2. Create a spell to use for Counterspells
Counterspell
Universal
Level: Varies (see text)
Components: Varies (see text)
Casting Time: Immediate Action
Range: Long
Saving Throw: None
Spell Resistance: No
Counterspell is used to counter an enemy spell. All spellcasters automatically know this spell of any level they can cast. You may spontaneusly switch a prepared spell for a Counterspell as a free action
You need to make a spellcraft check (DC 15+ spell level) to recognize the spell the opponent is casting.
Then you may cast this spell as an immediate action. The level of this spell is one lower than the one you are counterspelling (metamagic included)
You must use all the components the target of your counterspell uses.
When you cast this spell you and the target make opposed caster level checks. If the counterspeller wins the enmy spell is wasted. If the target wins hir spell goes off as normal you lose the counterspell.
Counterspells work on any spell that is not range: self only.
Summons cannot be counterspelled either. Or Wish like abilities which can be likened to summons. Area effects may be counterspelled. Range for counterspells is always determined from the counterspeller to the caster whose spell you are trying to counterspell.
If for example Miera the wizard casts a maximised magic missile and Jorran the wizard wants to stop it he could spontaneously switch his fireball spell for a third level counterspell and target it at Miera to counter her maximised magic missile.
Thoughts? Would this work?
