You step off the boat, looking at the new comrades you have disovered during your latest adventure, and you wonder what lies ahead. All around you lies the only big city on the small, mostly jungle island. You can hear the sounds of dock workers, moving crates, or repairing ships. Off down the road you see the most popular tavern on the island, Ardan's Hut.

Rising from my morning meditations and stretches, I make my way abovedecks. With a beautiful day ahead, I savor the scents of the sea air, the feel of the wooden deck beneath my feet, the very feel of the wind brushing over my skin. All that readily in mind, I step along the gangway, making my way off the vessel. As I begin to walk the docks, I keep my ears open for anything of interest -- news of what might be happening on the island and in the city.

Kyrill

Kyrill had risen early this morning, knowing that his destination was to be reached today. He had been following this trail for months, whispered stories in one town, grisly findings in another. Each one bringing him one step closer, all finally leading here.

"But what will I find here?", he wondered as he stood in the bow of the ship, Irina heeling patiently at his side, enjoying the salty air, however strange it was. The heat had been unbearable below decks for both of them, and he could tell from the way Irina had ceased to pant that she was doing better, at least. He toweled off the sweat from his face as he shielded his eyes from the sun, watching as the harbor slid closer and closer.

It had been almost nine weeks ago that his lord, Nikolai Gregorovich, had directed him to head south. A series of grisly murders had occured in his adopted city, each seemingly unconnected.

Gregorovich's orders had been simple, follow the trail, wherever it led, and put a stop to it. Kyrill had not started out alone, of course. Two others had gone with him--Aleksandr had been the leader of their small band, an experienced captain of men, but more importantly, having a sharp mind and an intuition for the ways of criminals. Mikhail had been their thief-catcher--clever at getting information, finding out the undercurrents in any city and prowling the streets at night. Aleksandr had been the brains, Mikhail had had the skills, and Kyrill was the brawn.

Unfortunately for Kyrill, the other two were gone, one dead for sure. Mikhail had been first, and he had simply vanished. They had waited in the city of Brindol for four days, hoping he would return, but had given him up for dead. Aleksandr, at least, was certainly dead. Aleksandr had apparently asked the wrong questions in the last town they had visited. Someone had grown suspicious, and for all his skills with the criminal underworld, he had been murdered. Kyrill found him in an alley later that night, a garrote wound around his neck. Kyrill had worried when he didn't come back to the inn they were staying in.

And now Kyrill was out of his element. He certainly was not a detective; he was only now becoming accustomed to the world of men, with all its intrigue and deception. He was a man of war, or had been, at least. The battles he knew were straightforward, frontal attacks, ambushes on supply trains, pillaging and burning. Not this. Certainly not this. He hoped his message wouldn't be too long in reaching his lord, informing him of his present circumstances.

Kyrill was drawn out of his reverie as the ship touched into harbor. He realized with a grimace that he hadn't even been able to enjoy the sea breeze.

"Come on girl", he said as he stepped back from the front of the ship and walked down the gangway, nodding to the captain and flipping him a small purse, payment for the voyage.

At the bottom of the gangway, he stayed long enough to ensure that his mules were properly stabled. After he was satisfied, he began to stroll down the dock, trying to take in the strange sights. For the eighth time since dawn, he thought to himself how unbearably hot things were this far south as he loosened the collar of his shirt a touch more.

It was then that he noticed yet another man dart out of his way as he strode along, and almost cursed Gregorovich for sending him away. Among the men of his unit back home, he was, if not welcomed into their hearts, at least accepted for what he was. He doubted if the men who kept trying to clear out of his way had ever even seen the likes of him before.

He was going to need information if he was going to get started. He noticed a dock worker and thought he might as well get started.

"Excuse me, sir? (he tried his best to adopt a subservient, meek tone--it came across as a dull rumble). I just came off the ship, and I could use some help orienting myself. Could you please tell me a little about your city?

As he asked the question, out of the corner of his eye he noticed the others coming off the ship. They seemed good in a fight, and there was something about their demeanor that told him they might be able to provide the help which he so desperately needed...

Gillian

After leaving the ship Gillian pauses to take in the sights. She waits paitently for her wagon to be offloaded, and waters her horses, who are panting in the heat. "There you are boys" she says quietly.

She waits for the rest of the group to disembark before looking around for lodging.

Brigot got off the boat and looked around. Well I hope these people can pay well. I guess I should wait and see what happens, at least I got a free boat ride. Spotting one of the others who helped him fight the sea hags, Brigot decides to stick with them until he can find a mission.

Kyrill

As Kyrill stands waiting patiently, the dockhand seems visibly agitated. Gulping, he says, "N-Not mu-much to t-t-tell. I'm w-with the sh-sh-ships." Frantically, he points to one, "That one," and runs off in the general direction he pointed.

Muttering silently to himself, Kyrill realizes that his decision has been made for him--he'll need the help of others if he's to make any headway in some kind of an investigation. Kyrill turns to the pair at the base of the gangplank.

Listen with a Russian accent, and you'll get the idea.
"I do not know that we were ever properly introduced, unless you call baring blades together introduction. My name is Kyrill Medvedyev. You two look like you know how to handle yourselves in the vorld. I could use help with task I have been given, but this is not proper place for talk. If you are interested, let us find shade and privacy. Perhaps we can see if the others from ship would like to do same.

Kyrill

As the party gathers around a corner table in the tavern, Kyrill speaks up:

It seems to me that we are stumbling in the dark at this point. I propose this:

1) We procure rooms and stabling for our animals, as we will need base of operations.
2) A few of us should visit local government, attempt to gain audience, and then explain our purpose in coming here.
3) The others should explore the city, try to learn the undercurrents of the streets--what people are thinking and talking about.
4) Meet back here, discuss what we've found, and then make a decision from there.

That is what I propose, at least. What do all of you think?

And with that, Kyrill leans back, waiting patiently. Feeling that he has spoken plenty for now, he wants to listen to the others and hopes one of them will make the decision. I am just not a leader--not in these conditions, anyway, he thinks with a sigh.

Sitting humbly to the side, dwarfed by the larger men of the group Gillian speaks up somewhat timidly "We are stumbling in the dark indeed, Kyrill was it?, but I feel thats because we seem not to know what it is we are doing here, together I mean. Im sure we all have our own reasons to come to this city.."

She pauses to allow someone else to inject their voice. We should try to make the best of it though... She smiles politely and observes the other patrons in the tavern.

Kyrill, startled, sits up.
"Forgive me. How forgetful I can be! My mind has been very full of late, what with this mission I have been given."

Kyrill then relates to them why he has asked them to join him and Quenten, as the two had discussed on the road the nature of their respective tasks and agreed to work together. Kyrill explains that he is following a trail of murder from his city, but is at a loss regarding how to proceed, as he has lost his partners and isn't very good at detective work or remaining unobtrusive in a crowd. He needs their help.

Unfortunately, he doesn't know very much. The murderers themselves are long gone, perhaps dead to cover up the trail, and all he has are whispered hints that have led him to this city.

"Quenten, what can you add? I am sure your detective skills have uncovered much."

Sorry to put you on the spot!

"I'll admit I know very little of the customs of Aerin, having come newly to this land from North, but I cannot imagine any real differences. ...That is, unless you think of something that might be important for a stranger like me to know. Is there anything I should avoid--someone dangerous or someone I might offend? Something I should be careful not to say? Or, on other hand, is there someone in this city whose acquaintance I should make?"

Turning to Brigot and Roth'ight, he says, "I think that is excellent plan. But I also think we may want to go about it in such a way as to avoid the attentions of certain interested parties".

Nah I've heard tell of better rooms elsewheres, but you aint gonna git that anywhere on this here island. The price's one gold, if'n you please. Now, if you are able, I would very much like to learn the answers to my questions concerning offending wrong people, or who I should be sure to make acquaintance.

But if not, I would be just as happy to eat. The food smells most excellent."

If she says something important, it may change what I say next. I'll roll a gather information check, just in case it matters. [roll0]+1

Turning to his companions when she finishes, he says,"As I have said, I like your plan. I think that Gillian has right idea, too. As soon as my stomach no longer growls, I would like to get moving. I would be more than happy to follow your lead, for (as you can see from our poor lady's experience) I have difficulty with people."

Glancing at Quenten, and then back to his companions: "It would seem that our investigator friend here has much to mull over. Let us allow him to think over what we have seen so far." He turns again to the detective, "If you would like to stay, of course. Or if you would prefer, you may find out more if you wander the streets, or see if you can speak with any of your contacts, or even the nobles. We shall see what you have found when we return. Good hunting to you."

Back to the party: Tovarishi [Comrades], I feel that I have spoken enough. You talk. What else would you recommend? What are your thoughts on situation. And, if you have no further plans, I would like to know more about you personally."

Finishing his meal, Kyrill stands.

He doesn't do this until it seems everyone is finished talking. There were a few questions he asked that have gone unanswered so far. I'm not sure if the conversation is really over, but if no one speaks up, I don't have anything else to say, and I'm ready to find the plot!

"If there are no objections, I am going to get room (both for myself and one for Brigot), and then take a stroll around city myself. When Brigot comes back, we may have something to do. I should be back before dark falls. I think it good idea to agree to meet back at table tonight at (insert dinner time here). Before I go, I would like to have some idea of everyone's plans. Also, would anyone like to join me?"

What time is it?

He lifts his bag off the ground, along with the bags from the mules, and walks over to the inn keeper. He introduces himself.

"Thank you for calming girl. I, too, would like room, sir. One for myself and another for my friend. One gold piece, yes?" He lowers his voice: "Here are three, if you will provide room with sturdy lock, and another piece for friend's room. I feel like taking walk. Do you have any recommendation?"

When the conversation finishes, Kyrill heads upstairs to his room and leaves behind the bags from his mules. He locks the door, and sets Irina to guard the room (she is a guard dog, after all :smallwink:). He then begins to walk the streets, following any leads the innkeeper may have given him.

I'm technically supposed to roll an amount of time for this check [roll1], but he'll just stay out until he finally stumbles into a plot hook or night begins to fall. When dusk falls, he heads back to meet the group at the appointed time (unless you tell me that something happens or another member of the group stops him from going). Finding the guards HQ was harder than Brigot had expected, but he asked directions and arrived there quickly enough. The building was small for an outpost, but still the biggest building in the area. The outside of the building was decorateed with murals carved into the marble. Standing at the entrance on either side were two armed and armored guards.

"Er... all rooms, I mean, all our rooms are the same quality, and I cannot in good consience, nor good wisdom, take your gold for something I cannot give you." Ardan looks a little dissapointed, but gives back the extra gold. "Here are the keys. A place to walk? Hmmm... well there's the art district, we have many talented artists here, our Lord Baril takes great interest in the arts."

As they walk down the streets, Kyrill wipes his brow and looks away into the distance for a moment.

"No, you could say I am one-of-kind, and I do not mind your asking.

It is long story, but I will tell a little of it now. You see, I was once normal human-orc hybrid. But I was very bad man."

His eyes lose focus for a moment. He almost whispers what he says next.

"I led band of orc raiders called 'Fist of Yurtrus' in the far north. We did very bad things."

He starts to tremble a little, but then recovers.

"On one expedition, however, we found group of bears. We killed them--for fun. Or tried to. They nearly killed all of us. One of them bit me before I slew him. I think that is what did it.

"I was...changed. Whatever was in me saw how evil we were. It...caused me to kill Fist. It changed me outside, first, and I could not control. But over time it changed inside, too. My old life is like dream--or kashmar...nightmare?--and one I regret bitterly."

OOC:
Kyrill's probably going to be doing a mix, but sticking with the group. Seeing as how he doesn't want to draw attention to the group from the cult, he's not going to go up to someone and ask, "What do you know about the illegal cult?, seeing as how it'd just inform the cult that people are asking questions about them. It's mostly going to be asking people very vague and open-ended questions, and then honing in on the answers--like he did about the shipping guy. Questions not meant to reveal his true intentions. He'll ask about the city, pretending ignorance due to his being a traveler, and try to cash in on that perceived ignorance and naivete. A conversation about religion may hold some answers. It might even be that he feigns a conversation with Roth'ight about religion in a bar, in such a way as to draw others into talking about religion and philosophy, and perhaps let something slip.

He'll also be listening to others' conversations as he walks or "stops to sit and rest" in market places, but again, not being obvious about it. He's got a pretty solid listen check, so he ought to be able to hear from a distance. His scent ability might also give him an ability to smell people's emotions, like fear. That's up to you. It's not technically in the feat description, but science has shown that human women can smell fear on men, and it also added an interesting dynamic in the Wheel of Time series.

It may be that at the end of this, he only has a general idea of the mood of the city, whether people are fearful about something or not, or he may overhear some specific piece of information, or someone might say something suspicious that he has to ponder over. It's your call, of course.

Hopefully, by going about things this way, it allows you to write a narration of what we do, rather than a week-long back-and-forth between us. If we find your plot hook, great, if not, we'll wait for Brigot to get back with a job for us. But it has the ability to simplify things and allows stuff to happen much faster.

General mood of the city: is there something in the air, expectation of something, fear of something?
Crime: has anything strange happened recently, any murders, thefts, other crimes, disappearances, abductions? do people feel safe?
Events: any big events, such as the meeting between nobles? does anyone know what they're to discuss? any big holidays or something coming up?
Cult (no direct questions): who, what, why, how, anything?
People: famous people of the city, who are they, what do they do? who is this yarrin? who was the guy in the art district?

EDIT: Yep, the second roll definitely added nothing at all... You'll find my original roll in a spoiler when I talk about my plans for leaving the inn. That's the second time I've rolled gather info, the first being when I talked to the waitress. This now brings me to 3 total.

Any other questions, Jallorn?

P.S. Since MythWeavers is down, here are people's modifiers:

Brigot
Brigot walks into the captain's office and says Hello, I'm interested in offering my services as a monster hunter to this city. If there aren't any problems I would be more then willing to work as a part of the City Watch. While he waits for a response Brigot remains standing unless offered a seat.

OCC
I don't know if I need to roll, but what I'm trying to do is get officially recognized as someone who is used to hunt down unusual dangers to the city.

"...Hmmm... well there's the art district, we have many talented artists here, our Lord Baril takes great interest in the arts."

Yeah, I guess I just remembered wrong. If there's time after all the other places and things, we might swing by there, but I think it's going to be getting to be dark before we get a chance.

As the rest of the party breaks off to pursue their own agendas for the remainder of the evening, Kardgorr makes his way outside as well, eying the buildings around dubiously. Having already tried canvassing the local population, he's now looking at the roofs in this part of the city -- preferably for one that is rather flat and looks unused. And for dark alleys by unused buildings as well.

Kyrill - Ex-Barbarian

As Kyrill goes about his plan to find some kind of clue about the cult and what to do next, he turns to Gillian,

"I have been thinking, Gillian. If Brigot fails to procure work with guard, and we fail to find information on cult, we will need Plan C.

"You know ways of nobility, yes? If by tonight we know nothing, would you be willing to go speak with the nobles tomorrow about our task? If you will, you know best how to go about it. We can accompany you, or you can go alone."

Here's to hoping we find a plot hook before tonight!

As the three adventurers wander the streets, Gillian hears a woman talking to her friend. Since the two seem to be going the same way as the group, he doesn't say anything, but just listens, discovering information about almost everything and everyone, but the information that stands out the most is about a cult. It seems that a preacher visited alone, but left with a large group of people. He was seen talking to some shady characters however, and they were later seen to disapear into a dead end alley and never return out. There were also rumors about Yarrin knowing the preacher once.

(I'd like to have the other two members of the group catch up (timewise) before continuing with you guys, 'kay?)

The captain looks up from some paperwork on his desk and clears his throat, "Well, guards are always needed, do you know anyone in town who can vouch for you? We don't exactly trust newcomers foolishly."

Flat roofs are rather sparse in this town, due to the rainfall they sometimes get, and those that exist aren't too open to just anyone. There's no lack of alleys however, and even in the day there are more than a few dark ones.

Brigot thinks for awhile before responding. Sorry, I'm not that well know in town yet, however you could check with the crew of the ship I was on if they're still in port. Also I'm willing to do a few jobs in order to prove myself, for free even. Out of curiosity does this town have a force of troops designed to deal with unusual and dangerous creatures?

After locating a suitable alleyway in the neighborhood of abandoned or seemingly-so buildings, Kardgorr will slip off into the the shadows of the alley and begin surveying the building-side for a relatively easy way to scale his way up to the rooftops. Also of interest -- how close are the buildings? Are we talking five-foot jumps between, or twenty? In the interest of insanity.

"It's not a matter of money, it's a matter of trust. As for more dangerous creatures, that's not our job. That's the job of the Royal Rangers. Their local main stronghold is in Leonin Town, not that they use it much. They don't need much help usually, they train from birth, very skilled."

(I'm disregarding your comment about unusual creatures, remember, just cause they're magic creatures doesn't make them unusual in this world.)

One particular house has some ivy on it, that appears to be the easiest way to climb up. Gaps are generally around five feet, but occasionally up to ten.

Wonderful. Kardgorr carefully braces himself on the wall and ascends with the aid of the ivy. Once at the top, he'll survey the city from above, smiling, then, with padded footfalls, begin to make his way from building to building by jumping the small gaps with ease. He'll stop and hunker down if someone should almost spot him, and every little ways anyways to survey around him. Mostly stretching his legs and seeing the city, a little looking for something suspicious, people in dark robes performing rituals of evil, that sort of thing.

Brigot
I think you misunderstood me, I meant that in order to prove myself trustworthy I would help compleate some work for the guards. Brigot replied, when he hears about the Royal Rangers his eyes brighten and he says Really? Most places don't have a force like that, I wonder if I could meet them.

Jallorn

"I most certainly did not misunderstand you. It's a simple safety precaution, would you trust someone who just got into your town with the safety of people they don't know? Look, just drop it, I can't give you any jobs under the current circumstances. I'm more than willing to give you information however. Take the Royal Rangers for example, they operate across the entire kingdom as a matter of fact, yet very few people know of them. As for finding them, your guess is as good as mine, they almost never stop moving."

Alright.

I am trying to use the area around me -- i.e., other buildings, hence the part about the alley. With a take 10, that would have me beating 19. Anyways, there you go!

Brigot
Fair enough. Brigot shrugs and walks out. Brigot thens begins to travel to each tavren and inn looking for information and various rumors. Brigot also keeps his eyes out for anything unusual or signs of unrest or conflict.

Can I take 20 on a gather information test?

Brigot spends the evening wandering from tavern to tavern, slowed down by the odd drunk who wants to talk. He discovers less than his other comrades, but learns of the priest and his entourage. Roll 1d4 to see how much gold you used to buy drinks (couldn't sit in most taverns without ordering something). Also, make a Spot check.

Brigot grabs the kid's wrist. That wasn't very smart of you. He growls at the kid.

First an intemidate check [roll0] Then an unarmed touch attack to grab him [roll1] Also this kid really chose the worst PC to pickpocket. Lets go after the money obsessed half-orc whos had a bad day. :smalltongue:

The kid looks alittle startled, but for the most part seems pretty confident, "You can't do anything to me, I'm just a kid." he trys to pull his hand from Brigot's grasp, "I'll yell if you don't let me go."

He'll stay up stretching/exercising there until he either spots something interesting, or night falls and the interesting things to hear move inside.

Taking 10 on jumps, with a +9, then +4 for his speed, makes 23. DC for normal horizontal jumps is the distance to be jumped, I'm assuming he has no problem easily clearing the five and ten foot gaps.

Brigot calms down slighty and also lets his grip slaken slightly. So I take it you arn't part of any sort of orginsation then. just some poor starving child who needs some cash for food. Am I right. Brigot keeps his voice compleatly bland as he speaks.

It would be best if you met the whole group. If your intrested in making some money off us then you can meet us tonight. Brigot then gives the kid the name of the inn and leaves quickly.

Kyrill - Ex-Barbarian

As Kyrill re-enters the inn with Gillian and Roth'ight, he greets the innkeeper by name and asks for a hot meal. Suggesting that the others procure a table, he heads up the stairs, noticing yet again the way that they creak under his massive bulk and shaking his head ruefully, wondering softly aloud if they'll survive his stay at the inn.

Upon reaching his room, he checks the outside for any signs of entry (an old habit from living with orcs), and then opens the door. He happily greets an affectionate Irina, and then returns downstairs with her at his heels after re-locking his room.

As he takes his seat with the others, he notices Kardgorr come (strangely enough) down the stairs, but quickly dismisses it, assuming that he somehow slipped in the front door while he wasn't looking. He invites the party to discuss what they have learned this day, and ponder what to do the next, all the while hopeful that Brigot will return with good news.

A steaming plate of fresh fish and fruits arrive, and Kyrill eagerly digs in, talking with the others between mouthfuls. As well, he sets the standard bowl of ale down on the floor for Irina, along with a cut of steak.

Finally, Kyrill notices Brigot come through the door and waves him over.

"Have seat, friend! We have a few things to tell you, but first, how did it go with Guard? Did you have luck today?"

Sorry if I narrated anything to anyone's displeasure. Let me know and I'll edit anything that needs changing.
