Pollen Mother's are queens of flora, the apex of what their species may attain. While some become thus through a greater span of years than their brethren others are truly amongst the first of their species that gave rise to the land's population. They are held in awe and fear, for there is few that can match them in their elemental and life as well as death is their domain to command.

A pollen mother is a truly enormous version of it's lesser children but exploding with drapes and spiraling bunches of flowers and fruit. Fungal creatures instead of flowers are covered in thousands of caps and lumpy mounds of spores. However their appearance they stride upon hundreds of thick, questing roots that continually grip the ground and feel about.

Naturally the phantom fungus appears as nothing much, but in reality this monstrous mushroom is the size of an elephant yet quiet as a mouse. Those with the ability to view it see it covered in a great multitude of sprouting shelves, a double row running down it's back like protective plates. They glow with the faintest light all their own, each a different color, the beauty of the pollen mother hidden by her race's natural obscurity...

Circle of Life (Ex): A pollen mother's death is a burst of life. The area within ten miles of which she is killed is affected as if by the Enrichment quality of the Plant Growth spell. As well, she immediately takes root (assuming the main body is left and there is soil or rock underfoot). Within a month 16 new phantom fungi will grow.

As well, while in her death throes she sends her roots down deep and begins tearing the land asunder. This acts as an earthquake spell out to 30 feet.

Crushing Roots (Ex): A pollen mother may grapple all creatures up to one size category smaller that come within her reach. If successfully grappled, those grappled take 3d6 damage each round. If the pollen mother uses her Rooted ability while grappling those grappled must succeed on another check or be thrust beneath the ground, taking double damage. They are considered helpless while buried and being to suffocate. If they possess an ability to move underground, such as with a burrow speed or earth glide ability, they are not helpless and may continue to make opposed grapple checks.

Double Damage Against Objects (Ex): A pollen mother that makes a full attack against an object or structure deals double damage.

Earth Tyrant (Ex): While using her rooted ability a pollen mother may siphon the life of all vegetation around her. This acts as the Stunt Growth quality of the Diminish Plants spell. She gains up to 100 hit points (these hit points cannot exceed twice her normal total). She may not siphon from an area already under the affects of Diminish Plants.

Greatberry (Ex): Every one of a pollen mother's caps are as a goodberry except there is no limit to how many hit points it may grant. They may even allow one to exceed their normal HP limit. If a being eats enough berries to push their HP total to twice or more their normal total they must succeed on a Fortitude save (DC 28) or take 2d6 points of constitution drain per round as the seeds in the berries sprout and start to consume the creature from the inside out. If they would die from this damage a full grown phantom fungus bursts out with the hit point total of what it consumed. It can be no larger than the base creature's size, affected as by a reduce person spell. They continue growing rapidly however, at a rate of one size category per minute until they reach the growth of a standard creature of their kind. A remove disease spell kills the plant creature while within but does not restore the drain.

Greater Invisibility (Su):
This ability is constant, allowing a phantom fungus to remain invisible even when attacking. It works like greater invisibility (caster level 12th) and lasts as long as the phantom fungus is alive. This ability is not subject to the invisibility purge spell. A phantom fungus becomes visible 1 minute after it is killed.

Green Queen (Ex): A pollen mother may rebuke or command plant creatures at will as an evil cleric rebukes or commands undead.

Haze (Ex): A pollen mother is continuously surrounded by a cloud of spores out to 70 feet. Those who breathe within the area must succeed on a fortitude save (DC 28) each round or spend a full round action sneezing and choking (are considered stunned). In addition they take a -4 penalty to spot and search checks from their watering eyes as long as they are within the cloud and for 1d4 hours afterward. Vermin, magical versions of pollinating creatures and insectoid creatures are unaffected. For example a fiendish giant bee would not be affected, nor would a formian.

Rooted (Ex): As a move action a pollen mother may send down her roots deep into the surrounding soil. Any creature attempting to physically move the pollen mother must succeed on an opposed Strength check, and she gains a +20 bonus on the check. While rooted she cannot apply her dexteirty modifier to her armor class and loses use of her root attack.

Wintersleep (Ex): A pollen mother reduced to -10 hit points from cold damage does not die but goes into a state of suspended animation for a number of years equal to their HD or until they heal the damage.

Skills: A phantom fungus has a +5 racial bonus on Move Silently checks.

An enormous tree stands tall and graceful, covered in moss on it's weathered trunk and boughs laden with beautiful blossoms in such profusion that they sag slightly from the weight. It then turns and you see an ageless face within the trunk and hypnotizing green eyes that shine with vigor...

Combat

Animate Trees (Sp): A treant can animate trees within 180 feet at will, controlling up to two trees at a time. It takes 1 full round for a normal tree to uproot itself. Thereafter it moves at a speed of 10 feet and fights as a treant in all respects. Animated trees lose their ability to move if the treant that animated them is incapacitated or moves out of range. The ability is otherwise similar to liveoak (caster level 12th). Animated trees have the same vulnerability to fire that a treant has.

Circle of Life (Ex): A pollen mother's death is a burst of life. The area within ten miles of which she is killed is affected as if by the Enrichment quality of the Plant Growth spell. As well, she immediately takes root (assuming the main body is left and there is soil or rock underfoot). Within a month 31 treants will grow to maturity.

As well, while in her death throes she sends her roots down deep and begins tearing the land asunder. This acts as an earthquake spell out to twice the range of her reach.

Crushing Roots (Ex): A pollen mother may grapple all creatures up to one size category smaller that come within her reach. If successfully grappled, those grappled take 8d6 damage each round.

Double Damage against Objects (Ex): A treant or animated tree that makes a full attack against an object or structure deals double damage.

Greatberry (Ex): Every one of a pollen mother's fruits are as a goodberry except there is no limit to how many hit points it may grant. They may even allow one to exceed their normal HP limit. If a being eats enough berries to push their HP total to twice or more their normal total they must succeed on a Fortitude save (DC 35) or take 2d6 points of constitution drain per round as the seeds in the berries sprout and start to consume the creature from the inside out. If they would die from this damage a full grown version of the pollen mother's base creature bursts out with the hit point total of what it consumed. It can be no larger than the base creature's size, affected as by a reduce person spell. They continue growing rapidly however, at a rate of one size category per minute until they reach the growth of a standard creature of their kind. A remove disease spell kills the plant creature but does not restore the drain.

Green Queen (Ex): A pollen mother may rebuke or command plant creatures at will as an evil cleric rebukes or commands undead.

Haze (Ex): A pollen mother is continuously surrounded by a cloud of pollen or spores out to 90 feet. Those who breathe within the area must succeed on a fortitude save (DC 35) each round or spend a full round action sneezing and choking (are considered stunned).

While rooted she cannot apply her dexterity modifier to her armor class and loses use of her root attack.

Trample (Ex): Reflex DC 41 half. The save DC is Strength-based.

Wintersleep (Ex): A pollen mother reduced to -10 hit points from cold damage does not die but goes into a state of suspended animation for a number of years equal to their HD or until they heal the damage.

Skills: *Treants have a +16 racial bonus on Hide checks made in forested areas.

Creating a Pollen Mother

"Pollen Mother" is an acquired or inherited template that can be added to any creature with the plant type, hereafter referred to as the base creature. A Pollen Mother uses all the base creature’s statistics and special abilities except as noted here.

Hit Dice: Advance the base creature's HD to the maximum of it's race and add 10 additional HD. Increase it's size by one additional category past it's normal maximum. If the creature would already be colossal by normal advancement, increase it's reach by 10 additional feet if it has one.

Size and Type: Adjust size by HD as mentioned above. Type is unchanged.

Speed: Increase all of the base creature's speeds by 10 for each size category it increases. If the base creature could not move it gains a land speed of 10 per additional category as mentioned above.

Armor Class: A pollen mother gains a natural armor bonus equal to 2 times her size category increased. This stacks with the base creature's existing natural armor.

Special Attacks: A Pollen Mother retains all special attacks of the base creature. They also gain the following special attacks.

Circle of Life (Ex): A pollen mother's death is a burst of life. The area within ten miles of which she is killed is affected as if by the Enrichment quality of the Plant Growth spell. As well, she immediately takes root (assuming the main body is left and there is soil or rock underfoot). Within a month a number of the base creatures will grow to maturity equal to the pollen mother's full HD.

As well, while in her death throes she sends her roots down deep and begins tearing the land asunder. This acts as an earthquake spell out to twice the range of her reach.

Crushing Roots (Ex): A pollen mother may grapple all creatures up to one size category smaller that come within her reach. If successfully grappled, those grappled take damage each round based on the pollen mother's size listed below.

They continue growing rapidly however, at a rate of one size category per minute until they reach the growth of a standard creature of their kind. A remove disease spell kills the plant creature but does not restore the drain.

Green Queen (Ex): A pollen mother may rebuke or command plant creatures at will as an evil cleric rebukes or commands undead at a level equal to the mother's HD.

Regeneration (Ex): While in a natural setting a pollen mother gains regeneration/acid and fire based on her size. A pollen mother that loses part of her body mass can regrow it in 1d6 minutes. Holding the severed portion against the mass enables her to reattach instantly.

If they take a whole bunch of cold damage, does their natural healing (at "Complete Bedrest" level) stop? Because otherwise the bit about "years equal to hitdice" is almost never going to come up.

INT 1 and 2 are not mindless.

In a cold setting you can be taking deadly cold damage every round. Their natural healing is unlikely to keep up with it. Once they were thawed however then their natural healing would be able to kick in, but it'd take awhile.

Ah... so if one gets teleported above the arctic circle or something... or goes up on top of a tall mountain with Immunity to Element running and then that gets dispelled or whatever...

Mm! Put a leafy mustache on that sample treant and I'll call it the Great Deku Tree. Anything that makes my dream of an Ocarina of Time adventure path more viable gets my immediate thumbs up.

Beautiful work here, VT. It's nice to see an interesting, powerful, viable monster that isn't some blood-sucking abomination. No offense, Krimm.

So... what would you say an Earthquake effect does to someone who has been burried alive without the benefit of a coffin anyway?

What's her effective Cleric level for her Green Queen ability?

What's her effective Cleric level for her Green Queen ability?

I'd put it at equal to their HD, and 2x HD for plants of their own species. You'd have an awfully hard time convincing an oak tree to disobey a Pollen Mother Treant.
