Hey guys. The old thread's been off the front for more than a month and a half, but a new episode finally came out last night, and I thought it might be an interesting watch (especially for you Marth Fans). So, I decided to make a new thread. I'm also merging the content from How to Play Brawl Like a Marth into this one.

So, WELCOME BACK!

How to Play Brawl Like a Man is a Machinima/How-to series that teaches players the REAL way to play Brawl and any other video game. It turns out you've all been playing games wrong the whole time. Why play like a Pro with skills when you can play like a MAN? People who ignore this video, aren't worthy of this awesome and potent knowledge.

Warning: The following show contains extreme manliness. Pregnant women and the feint of heart should turn away. Taking this series too seriously may lead to no sense of humor, looking like an idiot, and anal leakage.

The Episodes:
Episode 1: What is Manly? (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rwEHUPkJ7lE&feature=channel_page&fmt=18)
Episode 2: The Man Tier (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=M-F3DrzrZWo&feature=channel_page&fmt=18)

Episode 3: Solimar (REMIX) (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cH13tjrSkf0&feature=channel_page&fmt=18)
Episode 4: Lucariowned (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=c_-0C8ysPDg&feature=channel_page&fmt=18)
Episode 5: Mega Marth (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=S79NiH-6ykQ&feature=channel_page&fmt=18)

Episode 2: The Rules (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vNSk8ELEQ08&feature=channel_page&fmt=18)

Alternate videos (including the originals of Had a Bad Brawl and Episode 3) can be found on Dailymotion under the screenname DairunCates.

Anyway, enjoy. New fans AND old fans. Glad to be back.

Oh, and Episode 5's in the works already. This one's too fun to let sit too long.

Also, it appears there's a new HtPBLaMarth.

New Video. "TAGGED... Like a Man!" Not an official video, but it does give you a peek into some of the inspiration for the series.

Look, I'm sorry, I thought he was working for Medeus. I didn't realize he was really Gharnef's good alternate universe counterpart until after he was a bloody mess on the wrong side of my sword. You'd be surprised how often recruit-able characters challenge you to a duel in a game where defeat (http://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/DefeatMeansFriendship)does not (http://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/SubvertedTrope) equal friendship (http://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/DefeatMeansFriendship). :smallsigh:

Well well...I'm not sure what I think of this lead up to a new episode. One shouldn't abolish established ideas, especially in a comedy series, for the sake of complaints. Marth should stay as 'worst ever' just for the sakes of the comedy, I'd say...

Still, fantastic work on the episode, and, once again, with the music. Really great. You're really good at making these.

Unless the reason can be found that is more amusing than the status itself, like the Apprentice seeing Marth take the last cookie from the cookie jar the hour before the Sage was defeated and the entire day was squished into a single weird scene in his memory...

Yeah, that'd be great, and still holds him as reprehensible, etc. One of the best things in comedy, especially in forms like this, is being able to come back to entertaining themes running in the background like a scapegoat character.

Yay, Lucario. And yay! I called it! Or, Katie called it, whatever. The musical montage was excellent, and I loved your explanation of how manly Lucario's moveset is (Me First is truly the best counter ever).

Oh don't worry. I'm going to be keeping a lot of the themes no matter how serious it gets. Matter of fact, the serious parts really are just building up to some even bigger jokes in the future. I haven't forgotten the series root.

Oh, and what did you/Katie call Enlong? I forgot.

Well, no you wouldn't. You just wouldn't be telling a truth.

I think, by far the best part of the episode (minus the plot, I love plot) was the way the rule was stated.
Blow. yourself. Up. With Smart Bombs.
Oh, and the Linkara quote... How manly is it to shout "I am a man!" as you Falcon/Warlock Punch?

By the way, can this strategy be adopted to other explosives berserker styles of manliness? I for one enjoy throwing Bob-Ombs at my own feet to catch my opponent in the explosion. They never see it coming.

Jeez. Just rub in that I haven't gotten around to Shadow Dragon by making me looking up multiple things, why dontcha?

Oh, and yes, Enlong, why WOULDN'T bob-omb suicide techniques be manly? I never intend for what I say to be the only cases of manliness. I encourage people to go out there and find their own ideas.

Don't know if this technically counts as a double post, but I thought I'd update and tell you guys that I wasn't lying when I said Episode 5 was going to take about 2 weeks from Episode 4.

It's mostly done, and I have to say that this has been one of my favorite episodes to make. I think the Marth fans and Marth haters are going to enjoy it equally as much. LOT of jokes going on in this one.

I've finished up about 90% of the work at this point. The script is done, the clips are filmed, the voices are recorded, and the whole thing is mostly spliced together. I'm just waiting on someone sending me the file for the Sage advice and finishing up the credits for this episode. I'll be finishing up everything as soon as I can. I have some schoolwork that might get in the way, but nothing short of that and not having the files is going to stop me.

The short version... Expect Episode 5 to arrive sometime in the next couple of days or so. That is all.

PS. Oh, and I'm taking votes from people on what they want to see for the next few episodes. Lucariowned was actually the most requested character when I started out, and the second most requested one is currently slotted for next episode. I'll also be doing some less character-oreinted stuff along the way (items get their own special, and SSE might get a couple of episodes).

I'm saving some characters (ie. Captain Falcon, Jigglypuff) for special occassions (ie. HtPBLaM 1st year anniversary, holidays, 10th episode, etc). Other than that, we're fair game.

So, if you want your favorite character or one you think would be funny to show up sooner, give it a vote.

Ah, Mega Marth X. Of course he's manly, he's practically identical to the costume coloration I call Paladin-Ike (Or Ike-adin) after its scheme similarity to the Azure City Sapphire Guard...

I still want to play Original Marth manly-like, though... my current idea is to focus on his forward smash, Shield Break, and Dolphin Slash (really hard to connect for KO-power, and leaves you vulnerable, good enough?), while using the Final Smash only after flipping off the edge of the platform... if you send me your Brawl Friend Code, I might be able to send you a video showing my strategy, Cates...

...Of course, if the definition of Manly were extended or altered to mean "Lelouch vi Britannia," Marth would take the cake easy when I use my "normal" free-for-all strategy... just look at Zero sans mask (http://lh3.ggpht.com/kenny.yeo23/R-0v-wwWbpI/AAAAAAAABGA/Kk7qFvkLCQI/%5BUNSET%5D.jpg) next to Marth (http://serenesforest.net/media/fe11illust/l/L_Marth.jpg).

Marth also becomes slightly manlier when you think of his Melee taunt as a CHALLENGE (http://www.hrwiki.org/index.php/Challenge) (as in, focus on me, idiots! I'm winning!), and his other two as salutes rather than showing off, in which case he's the only one to show proper respect to his opponents while taunting... :smallconfused:

...Wait! I've got it! The problem here is that Marth thinks this is a dance-fight/fencing match, so his moves are a lot more acrobatic than his normal cut-to-the-chase-so-I-can-kill-Medeus attacks... (His Shadow Dragon critical is identical to his Brawl Final Smash, as is his neutral ground-dodge...)

Dairun Cates
2009-04-01, 02:31 PM
Yeah. Kinda weird that Marth and Ike have a costume in common that's really similar. That just shows how manly this is.

Oh, and on a COMPLETELY unrelated note...

Feel free to keep trying. You're open to it. The ACTUAL reason for the Marth ranking is still coming up in the actual plot. There's some pretty big surprises coming up in the future. Hopefully, when this semester is over, I can pull out an episode every couple of weeks or so.

Mind you. This doesn't mean that the Marth jokes are ending just yet.

What can I say? I needed a scapegoat for the series, and Marth's fun to voice.

Oh, and damn you for reminding me that I still need to check if my WiFi for Smash is working. I've got a lot of people on that waiting list, but I'm sure I can squeeze in a spot for one of the fans.

Why don't you, oh apprentice of the sages, show us how to play an inherently un-manly character, such as Mewtwo or Young Link, in a more manly manner, which is the ultimate definition of manliness.

And that's why I appreciate you as enough of a fan to not call you out as the OBVIOUS HEATHEN you are, Mando Knight. You can take the joke. As the creator of the series, I thank you for that.

Of course, most of that doesn't matter now that Marth is totally manly.

Why don't you, oh apprentice of the sages, show us how to play an inherently un-manly character, such as Mewtwo or Young Link, in a more manly manner, which is the ultimate definition of manliness.

Just the apprentice of one sage.

And I don't generally do characters I can't play as. Mewtwo, Roy, and Young Link are actually decently manly. They just don't rank high because their unplayability makes them have a low potential FOR THE PLAYER. I suppose I COULD pull out the ole copy of melee one of these days and give it a shot though.

Lucas is a crybaby that abandons the guy who rescues him from Wario.
Ness hits people in the face with his yo-yo, and when that fails, he uses a bat.
I think it'll be Ness.

I'd like to throw a vote for Luigi. Just because he has one of the most manly (and satisfying) moves in the game: Point. Blank. Up. B.
Yeah.

Well, there's a very good reason Lucas could be the star of PK Man. Dairun Cates has said before that Lucas, despite being low on the Man Tier, is one of the easier ones to refine into a manly fighting style. In fact, Lucas himself has a number of moves that are manlier then some of Ness's. For example, His Psi Magnet boldy only covers one side of him, and unlike Ness's, can be used as an offensive weapon to fry your opponents with electricity. His PK Fire blows up in the opponent's face, rather then trapping them in a combo, and a he's got some nice single-hit, ringout potential moves where Ness has combo hits. He's also got the better upsmash, and as an impressive number of moves that zap things or blow things up.

Lucas has potential.

Also; play Mother 3, and just see how long Lucas remains a coward.

Actually, my "studio" consists of my bedroom in my apartment with the doors closed (to mute outside sound), a headset and webcam mic (depending on the volumes I need), audacity, Microsoft Movie Maker (although, I REALLY need to upgrade), my computer, and several external drives. That's it. The mics were cheapo 10-20 dollar mics, and everything else (save the computer and drives, obviously) was free.

So yeah... It's not so much the equipment, but what you do with it. Mind you, the capture device is a big hurdle, but I'm definitely not using the best equipment in the world.

Preferably involving suicidal suck-ups, Dedede beating people up, with Can't Touch This or some other good MC Hammer music going on in the background (Hammer Time! *Performs Fully Charged Down B Move*), and how to use his manly up-B move to its highest potential.

Also another vote for Luigi, Mario is a sissy and flips a cape around, whereas Luigi performs the ultra-manly flying headbutt of fiery doom. Mario has a water gun (not manly), Luigi has the cyclone(manly). Even Luigi's taunt deals damage. If only we could do something about Luigi's Dash attack.

On the other hand, Luigi is a complete and total scaredy-cat, while Mario just gets down to business when Bowser tries another one of his zany schemes.

I repeat FLYING HEADBUTT OF FIERY DOOM. That is all that need be said to resolve this debate.

I believe that manly brawling has to do with play style, not back story. Take Marth for example, he isn't unmanly in Shadow Dragon (aside from wearing a tiara), but his play style is extremely unmanly. Luigi is the opposite.

Preferably involving suicidal suck-ups

Preferably performed well off-stage, or off the edge of a moving stage. The variant where you spit them out underneath the stage and then chase them is even more manly.

and how to use his manly up-B move to its highest potential.

Easy; Use it to spike. The farther off-stage they are when you spike them, the more manly.
Alternatively, star KO your opponent and up-B off the edge while waiting for them to die.
Also, always use it for the ritual suicide that follows an accidental edgehog.

Other man-moves: Neutral aerial, dash attack, inhaling one enemy and spitting 'em at another (an exception to the projectiles rule), inhaling an enemy, walking over to the edge of a walk-off stage and spitting them to their death, Fsmash, inhale->Fsmash.
