PS2 memory card quandry

I recently got a used PS2 and everything seems to work fine except for one thing. When I go to play the original playstation games, they never seem to recognize that there's a memory card present. I've got one of the Playstation brand 8MB cards, and it seems to work for everything else, but the any and all PS1 games I've played with it. I'm wondering if anyone else has dealt with this problem, or may know how to fix it.

PS2 mem. cards don't work while playing PSX games. You need an old memory card for that. You can, however, store PSX files on a PS2 card: simply copy them from the PSX card to the PS2 card in file management area. You can't use it while stored on the PS2 card, but this may let your free up an old PSX card.

yeah, sorry, but you need a playstation memory card (ps1/psx what ever you want to call it these days) to save ps1 games, mildly annoying i know.
