View Full Version : Costuming Thread?

I'm surprised one of these doesn't already exist - or does it? These are the arts and crafts forums, and crafts implies costuming beneath it's wide umbrella of topics (so does 'arts' as well I suppose). If there's already a costuming thinger started somewhere, I apologize for this post which I'm making at two am when I should probably be sleeping due to the lack of sleep I've had almost every night previous this week.

Or am I really the only one who sees a need to create the costumes that half of my characters wear? (Or in some cases force my friends with more sewing talent to help me?)

LARPing, cosplay, and costuming by association never settled on a particular forum. Snippets are scattered all over. Agamid (rare forum appearances) sews medieval garb, 13th century if memory serves. Mauve Shirt just went to such an event but I don't know if she made her own garb. K....., of the Sock Coffee RL experiment, also made a Celia dress; I forget her name and the thread lay beyond the forum purge. Also lying beyond the forum purge were two who made belly-dancing costumes or lived with someone who did so (". . .it's no fun, fishing sequins out of your soup. . .").

Ah, well thanks for the info ^.^
Maybe I need to start posting pictures here then in an attempt to make some kind of a home for costuming shtuff.

Unfortunately, as often as I enjoy playing dress-up I so often forget to bring a camera along (or we end up having to much fun running around in our costumes we forget to take pictures all together).

At any rate, here's a few pictures of a costume I made/wore inspired by a unicorn-bard character I played in a campaign at one point (remember the pictures I put up forever ago of the unicorn people?). The pictures aren't to great, and one of them has a weird stick thing hanging in the picture and the others are at weird angles because a friend was taking pictures of me from a high vantage point.

A more or less, full shot. Lots of purple in this costume, it was very much fun to wear and design.

Hat fabric. Want.
Hat pattern. Want.
Hat color dye. Want.

I will have to pass on the bodice pattern however, because if the shoulder straps are flaring on you, they're going to be ailerons on me. It's a curse of being petite and the pattern-maker not quite realizing we're shorter in the shoulder also!

Possibly cross-post pics to You thread, Friendly Banter subforum. They're in one of their hat-posting phases.

Didn't make the Bodice. A friend of mine did - with a pattern that she bought and she made it free. So I figured that I'll modify it a little more for the next time I wear it.

But yes, I love the hat. I did make that, actually didn't use a pattern, just kind of took a chunk of fabric and sewed it into a floppy beret kind of thing. Then I put a feathered crowny thing under it and a scarf under that.

I'm sure you coult buy it somewhere, I know I've seen far too many costumes to have them all be home-made. The internets will sell anything if you find the right corner to look in...

That sounded bad, somehow.

Yeah, but I would like one that more faithfully replicates the mask: Not just cosmetically, but functionally, with a two-piece sliding back that retracts to the front with a touch-sensitive switch along the temples and a retractable left eyepiece. Bonus points if I could find a "Geass" contact lens in my prescription power...

...of course, had I the money and time, I could modify a purchased mask myself...

And for Anime Central in May I'll more than likely be cosplaying this:

Yay Soren/Senerio! He's probably my favorite Mage in all of Tellius.Maybe because he's the abandoned half-dragon child of an insane usurper? Or is it because of his absurdly awesome stats in FE 10?

Well I have a hard time removing the person from the outfit when judging stuff like that, but the aggregate looks good.

I didn't even notice the stick at first even though you said it was there, I thought it was a horn since it was an outfit from your unicorn people.

I'm going to make some costuming soon. Well sometime at least. First I'm going to have to figure out what it is I want to make. Its for the SCA so I want it to be at least reasonably accurate. I'm looking at about 1100-1500 germany, but I haven't narrowed it down any more yet. I need to get some books on it but none of the local libraries have anything and I haven't got around to setting up an inter-library loan yet.

So far all I've made is a tunic and a cloak, and neither of them are great, but they are passable. I don't have any pictures of them, though I'm sure if I got a hold of enough people from Estrella War I could find someone that had some.

I don't really count armor as costuming, but its all I've got pictures of right now so I'll post one. Not a great picture and it doesn't really show off the armor, not that its much to look at. I'm in the middle of the picture.

What material is that edging around the shield, Erloas, and what are the ties holding it in place? The edging looks like a slit rubber tube and I can't imagine that satisfying the sticklers for accuracy.

Kara Kuro, darn you and your ability to drape fabric artfully! A draper I am not. Swear that if I did the same, the fabric would just slither down into a snood shape and dangle there. No tucks, no interfacing, no hair-pins?!

I thought I remarked on Berserk Monk's chain-mail already, but if I didn't, that is the best use of varying colors of rings I have yet seen. Of all the chain-mail makers I know, none of them thought of using the colors to make patterns to intimidate people. Of course, none of them have full-face chain-mail, but the flap protecting the back of the neck would qualify. . .

Well for costumes they generally go for fairly authentic, but for armoring most people go for practical.

That is a high pressure air hose that has been split, its tied with a common small diameter rope.
Its not like the high quality aluminum that is used for the shields is very accurate either, or the stainless steel used on knees, elbows, helmets and almost everywhere else for some people. But of course stainless is significantly less upkeep and maintenance work, because the SCA is a hobby and not a way of life like it was for the people actually doing that back then.

As it is I've only seen a hand full of authentic shields. A lot of shields were made of wood and didn't last very long at all, but most people taking part in the hobby don't want to be remaking a shield every couple of weeks either. And for them edging a metal shield was a non-issue, we do it to help protect the weapons to some extent but mostly to help protect other people, because a sharp metal edge can cause problems. Of course when the goal was to actually kill the other person and the whole point was hitting people with sharp metal edges, so wrapping the shield didn't make sense.
They did wrap them in light leather and fabrics at times to display heraldry and such, but that would offer little to no protection for our uses.

Hm. Both are true... Mia/Ilyana leads to the amusing conversation about Ilyana trying to devour Mia out of delirium, and Soren is the Awesome!Mage in FE 10 and the better of the early mages in 9...

Anyway, I found a new money-sink that I won't start sinking money into until I have a couple dozen thousand dollars to spare... Albion Swords (http://www.albion-swords.com/). They have awesome swords. Though they are expensive.

DON'T. I will personally find you, hunt you down, and force your white-tee-shirt-and-plain-jeans-wearing-NON-cosplaying-self to put on a real costume if you want to be considered a cosplayer.

Sorry for that. But as someone who runs cosplay contests for conventions - I can't STAND L cosplayers, or at least not when they compare themselves to someone who broke out a sewing machine, hot-glue gun or any other various crafting item to actually create something. Mostly because at Nobrand Con one year, the cosplay contest was so full of L "cosplayers" that about fifteen people wearing actual COSTUMES couldn't get in to compete as should rightfully have been able to.

On a lighter note, I'm always pro-original cosplays! Fun Fun Fun!

The trouble with Cosplaying is that it's so expensive which means I have to make it on my own.
As I've already said, I might be attending an Anime Expo in May I wanted to Coplay in an Ouran Uniform, I have pretty much everything I need to put on together apart from the blazer but I can't find anywhere that sells it separately to the rest of to costume and I can't really find another one in the right colour and shape. ._.

I did some Pokemon cosplay for Halloween when I was younger, but my mother did the sewing, because I was about 9, 10, and 11 years old at the time. I don't think I have any pictures, but I can describe what each costume was.

Graymayre, has anyone told you that you look remarkably similar to James Rolfe (http://www.cinemassacre.com/new/?page_id=13)? Because you do.

That's one thing. Although I still think that even a good costume is more a bit of acting, a wig and some make-up.

Definitely doesn't stack up to some of the crazy stuff I've seen enter cosplay contests.

True, I've seen some pretty amazing Cosplayers.
I guess is like "Darn... the fest is tomorow and I haven't got anything... I'll just cosplay as L" :smalltongue:

The amazing cosplays are always the best. At the con I attended as Dr Calgori, there was a Pyramid Head. About 30 seconds after they entered, there was a little trail of fanboys.
Which is why I'm kinda sad that all my favourite characters can be cosplayed with my regular clothes. It's cheap, but kinda boring.

LARP in a week.

Should DD try and dodge the cameras like he did last time? Yes/no?

The majority will decide!

Hurray! I have my last-minuet costume ready for the Expo. The only part I don’t have is the make-up, however my friend said she’ll lend me hers. I hope I don’t have a hard time getting my gun there since it’s against the law to carry around toy guns/knives/swords/weapons now…

To the girlz! (And some guys)

So I’m going to the expo tomorrow, and I have a quick question to ask. If I put on consellor that’s a darker shade then my skin, but the cover my whole face with pale foundation, will you notice the darker consellor underneath and be all patchy?

Is consellor... concealer? At any rate I really no nothing about make-up anyway, not much I can do to help you on that one.

Pic heavy links.

DD in costume?

Yes!

Hmmm, the links seem to be broken or something.

Oh well, the original post. (http://www.giantitp.com/forums/showpost.php?p=6100949&postcount=1457)

Or if those pics are broken, this is the whole picture stash of the LARP weekend. (http://www.arcana.nl/index.php?page=fotos-bron&album=20090500b_Bron+3+-+%A9+Organisatie+De+Bron)

Awesome! I don't care what any "normal" people say - LARPing is so much fun ^.^

Also guys, I posted this in the banter forums as well... But any suggestions for cosplays for Kara for gencon? Situation changed and now it looks like I might just have a pretty decent sum of money to blow on a costume.

If it's any consolation... This is the costume that's currently top on my list for making:

The pictures are already up on the photo thread so I won't bother uploading them here too.

You mean I gotta walk all the way over to Friendly Banter, rather than looking in the costume thread?

Fine. *grumble, grumble*

EDIT: Wait, who were you dressed as?

Other then the tail and gun though, I didn't look like I was cosplaying though. :smalltongue:

Here's a question for anyone who would care to offer their opinion, whether or not you're familiar with the subject matter.

I'll be cosplaying as this character:

http://images4.wikia.nocookie.net/twewy/images//4/47/Joshua.jpg

From The World Ends with You/Subarashiki Kono Sekai, a squeenix DS game that launched maybe just shy of a year ago?

Annnywayy, my question is what colour do you think his hair is? I can't decide whether to go with a pale blond wig or a silver/white one.

Lord_Gareth

I'd say pale blonde.

Also, if those pics in your first few posts are you, then you are one of the very few girls on the 'net who is actually prettier than I imagined.

(Before you get freaked out, that's just a compliment. I'm happily engaged)

I was leaning towards blond as well.

And thank you ^.^ That's always nice to hear. However I wouldn't worry about freaking me out by accident, I'm pretty easy-going not often prone to taking slightly freakier comments to seriously.

This is currently the wig I'm leaning towards:

Any advice for prospective cosplayers (especially ones who, like me, are not necessarily attractive. I mean, people don't turn to stone when I walk past, but I'm definitely someone you'd justify to your friends with some lameass excuse about my personality)? Any particular cloth or materials that you find work best?

Any comment on the thing I posted up on the Fanservice thread? [/uses his random offtopic statement for the post]

Personally, I would go for silver white.

I remember there's used to be this fairly awesome and rather prolific user who made and took picture of herself on THE blue dress used by celia on his date with roy (complete with sideboob!). She's sadly taken, and I think she and her husband made medieval costumes for sale.

Haven't seen her for a long time though. I don't even remember her username anymore...
