So in 3.5 the most damaging melee threat was the Ubercharger, So with Fighter and Barbarian out in the playing field, what would this 3.5 monster of optimization look like in 4e, if we tried to maximize a guy for charging damage.

Rules of engagement
1) Character is designed for optimum damage on a charge.
2) Character lvl <= 20 (pick the lvl that the best showcases it's charginess)

Current thoughts
I don't know barbarian that well so most of the current Ideas come from knowledge of fighter
1) Rhino strike(attack on a charge, 2[w] damage) for heroic tier.
2) If you wield the weapon 2h and PA you get the 3 damage.
3) Horned Helm(+d6 damage per tier on a charge)
4) Vanguard weapon - you specialize in charge attacks you might as well get the most benefits.
5) Orc race - IIRC, they have a racial charge attack?
6) Bracers of Mighty striking - If you don't have an attack you can use on a charge, this nets you extra damage
7) Speed increasers
8) Any striker extra damage feature, though SA not the greatest.

What would the playgrounders do with this thought.

Barbarian's a lot better for this, being a Striker with an At-Will that can be used as part of a charge attack.

Using the craghammer? Yah the proficiency is only a +2, but it's a brutal 2 weapon. Any time you roll a 1 or 2 on damage, you reroll, and if you keep getting a 1 or 2, you keep rerolling, until you get a 3 or higher. Being a dwarf with the dwarven weapon training feat makes it even better, so now your minimum damage at first level will be 5+str mod.


Edit: Executioners axe. d12 Brutal 2, high crit, two handed weapon. Is better than the craghammer d10 brutal 2 for everyone that doesn't need/want a one handed weapon.

The Gnoll racial power lets them add some extra damage to a charge, Orcs (and Half-orcs) get a +2 speed bonus during a charge, and Minotaurs have a charge racial power and get a +2 to AC against OAs provoked by charges.

My bet would be on a Minotaur Rageblood Barbarian with the Beastblooded Minotaur Paragon Path. This way, you'll get a free action charge whenever you reduce an enemy to 0hp and whenever you spend an action point, in addition you'll have a ton of powers that you can charge with. Oh, and you'll eventually have a base speed of 8, which outshines the extra speed the Gnoll has and the +2 the Orcs get during a charge.

A Warforged Barbarian with the Warforged Juggernaut Paragon Path gets this nice little ability...

Charging Strike (11th level): When you use the charge standard action, you deal +1d6 damage on a hit and push your enemy 1 square. You can then move into the space vacated by your enemy. This bonus damage increases to +2d6 at 21st level.
Which would stack nicely with a Horned Helmet. They also get an encounter utility power that lets them charge through enemies and ignore difficult terrain.

It's not a published (or even finished...) class, but I'm working on a class (http://www.giantitp.com/forums/showthread.php?p=5968914) that is based on FFIV's Kain and Fire Emblem's mounted Knights...
