Hello everyone, I'm here to present my OotS-style webcomic, The Prestige!

http://www.zecarioca.net/Imagens2009/ThePrestige.png

About (General):
At first I was thinking about calling this webcomic an aH-style webcomic instead of a OosT-wecomic. Why? Some time ago I went to the "extras" at the anti-HEROS page and I've seen a guest comic by Q where he said, and I quote:

"Because you set the bar too high!"
What I'm trying to say is that I intend in keep the quality of this comic high, and I'm talking about art AND plot. The first issue doesn't count, ok? Wait until issue 4 or 5 before you say the art and the plot sucks!

All next sections will be under SPOILERS tags, so now you can jump to the comic and be happy.

About (Updates):

Real life is being cruel lately, so the updates are current set as "irregular".

About (Comic):

The Prestige is based and inspired on Dungeons & Dragons. We reserve as our right to create classes, places, spells, characters, and other things that do not belong to D&D in order to have a rich, fun and creative webcomic.
The Prestige is a webcomic about a group of characters that decided to make a prestige class as important as their base class, none of the main characters will have only a base class. (For example, there are good chances you will never see a character that is only a bard in the main group.)

About (Characters):

Under construction. Come back later.

It looks pretty good. I'll keep my eyes on it.

And now for the nitpick-part:

In comic #1, panel 9: It's always helpful if you have the speech bubble that is ment to be read first on top, because thats how you read a comic (and books), from top to bottom. So in panel 9 , when I read, they talk in the wrong order, and that can sometimes be a lttle frustrating to read.

Otherwise, it's good. :)

Great comic, small nitpick though. Comic 5 panel 9 should say give, not gave, and it would make more sense overall if it said "Did... Did you just slap me?" instead of "Did.. Did you just give me a slap?"

Thinking about it now.. Shouldn't it be "Did... Did you just slapped me?"?

Szilard
2009-04-21, 08:28 PM
Well, "did you just slap me?" sounds better than "did you just slapped me?" The first is introducing something in the past as if it was the present, while the latter is just weird and uber-past.

I shall nitpick!
Panel 3: "seen you" instead of "saw you"
Panel 9: "Now you own me two". Either "owe me two" or "own me too".
Panels 4+11: Decide whether kid is capitalized or not! Or the evil Proper Name Djinn will steal your comic making skills! And nobody wants that! :smalleek:
Suggestion: "We are here" is good grammar, but kind of clunky. "We're here" or "We're there" is a little smoother. What? I said nitpicky didn't I?? :smalltongue:
Aside from that, this comic is awesome.

That guy in the chair certainly looks friendly.

Great comic, couple of nitpicks though. Comic 10 panel 4 should say "Get off of the "Horsie"!" (exclamation point optional), and Horsie looks better as Horsey. In comic 12 panel 11 it should say elf chicks, not elve chicks. Also comic 12 is listed as comic 11 in the archives.

Dreat comic, time for nitpicks though:
panel 2: "castel" should be castle
Panel 3: Did she tell herself to do her Job? If not that should be a seperate speech bubble. Also "asigned" should be assigned.
panel 7: It should be "I didn't see you coming." Also, the 2nd speech bubble has an extra period.
panel 9: "recruting" should be recruiting, and it should be "Your father has decided to join us..."

In unrelated news I am no longer grounded.

in the last panel the apostrophy in "pee'd" is unnecessary, apostrphies don't modify tense, they form contractions.

As some of you may have noticed... Many of the characters still don't have a name. The reason is that I suck at give names!
So here is what I'm going to do.... Welcome to The Prestige Name Contest!

The idea is simple: YOU can chose the characters name!
Send to me a name, and if possible a reason for that name, for one of the following characters.

And we also we have a bonus contest:

If you can give the funniest name for these two you will get a very special "You are sooooo funny! ha ha ha !" comic!

I'll go for it.

And we also we have a bonus contest:

If you can give the funniest name for these two you will get a very special "You are sooooo funny! ha ha ha !" comic!

I'll say Krutt, because that is the name of one of my half-orc characters, and the name looks like it would fit him. Because he's green and k-names seem to fit.

So here is what I'm going to do.... Welcome to The Prestige Name Contest!

I would enter, but I usually give my names based on the personality of the characters or what the characters are planned to do. I don't know much about either of these things for your characters, so I don't think I can give very good names.

I guess I could try, though. When I think of a good name for any of these characters, I'll post it.

Hey, I like this strip. The characters are charismatic, cool and original. Also, the jokes are funny. I like the elf chick. She is as badass as she is sexy. And arcane archer is a cool class.

http://zecarioca.net/Imagens2009/arcanearcher.png
Alhena It is the name of a star, and a beautiful one. Also, it sounds elven without sound stupid.

http://zecarioca.net/Imagens2009/blackguard.png
Lord Khelm. You would not mess with someone who calls himself Lord Khelm, would ya? It sounds badass while not meaning anything, and it does not make an obscure reference to anything, so it is perfect!

http://zecarioca.net/Imagens2009/DaGreenSkin.png
Zharn. The same reasons as the previous one. Possibly cool, simple, but, instead of being badass and inherently powerful, it can fit almost every character.

http://zecarioca.net/Imagens2009/DoublePrize.png
Baggy "the Pirate" and J. Nobody knows why they call him J, but no one cares! And why "the Pirate"? Well he drinks a lot and he wears a bandana. And he is also a scurvy scoundrel!

(I apologize in advance if anyone covered any of these points already; I skimmed but didn't perfectly read all previous comments.)

Overall, decently good comic. I honestly think it has a lot of potential. I like the character designs, and there's plenty of action. I do have some constructive criticism though...

Get a beta reader if you don't have one already. I assume that dialogue is the last thing you add; just type it up quickly and PM it to someone before adding it to the comic. They can then check to make sure you have no grammar errors. Heck, I'll do it if no one else is. I cry every time an apostrophe is forgotten or misused. :smallwink:

I personally don't find the jokes about peeing one's pants or hot elf twins funny, but I also realize that some people might. Also, coming up with good punchlines can be extremely challenging, so I have some sympathy for you there.

The backgrounds are getting better, but avoid plain walls in the vast majority of cases (in my opinion). Just a little painting or sconce or something can really help.

Artistically, pretty good, though some of the differences in line thicknesses bother me, such as the border line thickness of Krutt's hair versus Krutt's body. Same goes for Not-Bob.... Though that may actually be more a perception issue on my part, lol.

I'll keep up with this comic, at least for a bit. I see that you already have 17 done so hopefully you won't randomly stop updating like I did with mine. :)

Yeah.. I'm not really the funniest guy in the world, but I really hope to improve. In some comics being funny isn't even my main goal... Sometimes I just feel like telling more of the story.

I really hate plain walls... I was talking to someone about that the other day... I can't really remember who... I just don't have the time to waste drawing room decoration. Heck! Sometimes I don't have time to draw a comic!

http://zecarioca.net/Imagens2009/arcanearcher.png Pamela. Why's every elf have to have a weird-ass name? Plus, Pamela Anderson is both hot and Canadian, two things that are good to associate with ANY character. :smalltongue:

http://zecarioca.net/Imagens2009/blackguard.png Micky "The Deadly Nightshade" Black. He has an embaressing first name, but people only know him by his self-invented nickname, which sounds scary.

http://zecarioca.net/Imagens2009/DaGreenSkin.png Tangall. Sounds kinda orcish, but not hilariously brutal and evil. I don't get an extreme brute vibe from this character.

http://zecarioca.net/Imagens2009/DoublePrize.png Vinnie and Jimmy. Rhyming names. Sort of.

Did you know that velociraptors were actually about the size of a turkey (http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/f/fb/Vraptor-scale.svg), and had feathers? Just another way in which Jurassic Park screwed up. Although there is also the Utahraptor (http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/7/72/Utahraptor_size_estimate_chart.svg), but that's even bigger than the JP raptors, and was also feathered.

Yeah, they weren't at all sure about the feathers, but the Velociraptors in Jurassic Park were big. Their shoulders were at around chest height for a human. This (http://unrealitymag.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/03/jurassic_kitchen_raptor.jpg) pic is from the kitchen scene, and while you can't get a direct comparison, you get a sense of the scale.
In the novel, the "raptors" were Deinonychus (http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/8/82/Deinonychus-scale.png)*, which was thought to be a Velociraptor at the time, but that idea was dropped before the movie was made.

You may be thinking of the small dinosaurs in the The Lost World: Jurassic Park, who were Compsognathus (http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/e/e8/Compysizes1.png)*.

*I don't know how to pluralise dinosaur names, so I'm not going to try.

The ones in the kitchen scene were the film's version of Velociraptors, they abbreviated the name. The "fat guy" villain, Dennis Nedry, was blinded and killed by a Dilophosaurus. They shrunk the Dilophosaurus down, so it would be different from the raptors, as real life Dilophosaurus is fairly large (http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/0/0b/Dilocoelo_scale.png). They made up the Dilophosaurus's neck frill and poisonous spit as well.

I have a sudden urge to reread everything and nitpick the grammar. AKA: Boredom

Alright, comic 1:
Panel 2: Raising, not risen. Raising is more something you do to something else while risen is something you do to yourself, if that makes any sense.
Panel 3: "Why does he want to be the best" instead of "Why he wants to be the best". The former is more of a question while the later is more of a statement.
Panel 7: The natural tendency is to start at the top and go down, so people will read the bartender's reply before the question. It might make more sense if you flip the positions of the bubbles. Also: "Never heard of him" would probably be more grammatically correct, but "Never heard" is fine. :smallwink:

Yes it is!

Panel 7 is the only thing I can find. "Your powers of observation amazes me" Powers is plural, amazes is singular. It should be either:
"Your powers of observation amaze me"
or
"Your power of observation amazes me"
The first one is the most used, but the second one works too I think. Whichever one you want. :smallwink:

Nitpick: Since he's telling what happened in the past, it would sound better with "It turned out...". Although "turns out" can work, too.

Actually, I must say I was wrong, so I apologize.

The story about The Prestige has lasted five strips. With the usual schedule. That's what made me think it was... Weak. It has been too slow for something like a plot exposition.

I have just read them and they are pretty interesting, in fact. When you read them all at once, the plot exposition is much better and, obviously, quicker.

So nevermind. They are a well done job. Especially the art.

Yes, have you not read the Book of Exalted Deeds? There are some "Vow of" feats, that grant bonuses to the character as long as he doesn't break the vow. For example, there is the Vow of Poverty, one of the most powerful. It gives you AC bonuses, damage, saving throws, bonus feats... But if you have any magic items or a backpack, you lose the feat. Forever.

If you haven't read the BoED, I suggest you do it. But please, read the Book of Vile Darkness before. You will know why when you have read them both.

Name contest entries, PMed earlier.

Serious names:

Elf chick: Arianna (I don't really have a reason for this...)

Main Char: Alagosion (means storm child(male), and the weather is constantly shifting and changing... at least, it is here... i wanted to do 'weather' but couldn't find it)

Blackguard: Burzum (Orc for Darkness)

Orc Chieftain: Uruk (It's orcish for great. It was taken from elvish, and like an elf, the chieftain looks fairly androgynous... i don't know if you mentioned his/her gender anywhere, but...)

Joke names:

Blackguard:

Fourtyeighthunter-threefarmer-sevenlumberjack-twohunteragain-threethief-onelooter-twodogtrainer-onevigilante-sevenchef-threeknight-blackguard. Or steve to my friends.

(His family tells the story of it's ancestry through their names or something. The numbers means that many generations of the job after it)

Elf chick: Hotty

(Her mother heard a human say it before she found out what it meant in common and thought it sounded nice... If that's too much you could just put 'female' )

Main Char: [I]BARKBARKYOWL (Their father let the dog name him, thus leading to his dislike of the druid class)

EDIT: Oh wait, i forgot the orc chieftain...

Herm F. Rodite (As in, hermaphrodite)

BEHOLDERS DO NOT WORK THAT WAY!
Beholders only have one gender. They each have a "womb" of sorts hidden behind their tongue, and at some point during the beholder's first 40 years the eggs contained within it will fertilise. Around 12 beholderlings will gestate, and they grow to completely occupy the mouth of the beholder, its tongue lolling sickeningly out of its jaw, while the beholder survives on stored food, packed into it's intestine, stomach, and even its lung.
After around 6 months of pregnancy, the beholder dislocates its jaw, vomits up the womb, and bites it off. The beholderlings chew their way to freedom, and the parent then eats those that it doesn't like the look of. It then kicks the lucky few remaining children into the wild.

Although with Magical Aid!TM, half-beholders can come about. There's a template kicking around in a couple of sourcebooks.

From "Bastards and Bloodlines" source book:
"No one knows just where half-beholders come from. Some claim they are the result of vile experimentation, while others maintain that they arise from natural interbreeding between beholders and other things. According to legend beholders are an unstable race, with dozens of variants and subraces, so this second view gains more credence than it otherwise would."

Keris
2009-10-18, 09:11 PM
Yeah, B&B was one of the sourcebooks I was referring to after the spoiler. The information on beholder reproduction came out of "Lords of Madness: The Book of Aberrations". And since LoM is a Wizards published '05 sourcebook, and B&B is a third party '03 sourcebook, I say it takes precedence.
Plus, despite what "others" may think, magic is certainly the more likely option, and "more credence than it otherwise would" still wouldn't be that much. :smallwink:

Yeah, B&B was one of the sourcebooks I was referring to after the spoiler. The information on beholder reproduction came out of "Lords of Madness: The Book of Aberrations". And since LoM is a Wizards published '05 sourcebook, and B&B is a third party '03 sourcebook, I say it takes precedence.
Plus, despite what "others" may think, magic is certainly the more likely option, and "more credence than it otherwise would" still wouldn't be that much. :smallwink:

Yeah : )
I was just point out a source book I had in hand just now

Ye-ah, magic. Bow-chika-bow-wow!

RvB references aside, the differences between beholders are so vast that it's more like a type of creature (reptile, mammal) than a specific animal. They range from Chaotic Evil to Lawful Good (outcasts, of course), have hundreds of subraces (probably, anyway. I wouldn't dream of counting them) and fulfill all sorts of party roles (I heard of a beholder giving a quest in a human town once)

Also, slapping magic on pretty much anything gives it credibility in DnD.

It's amusing to watch this conversation take place when We probably all know it's one of the 2 characters shapeshifted.:smallamused:

That is a fair point. Though to be honest, he and everyone else is currently working and ABR FFF:r right now. I think that practically every fan comic creator gers in on that sooner or later. It was the last thing on my mind, yet I joined them.:smallamused:

Easy. They shoved something really, really big up his ass before he transformed and now he's screaming because it's stuck halfway between where a baby should be and where s*** comes out.

EDIT: Wait a minute does that thing have two brains?! Or am i looking at this wrong?
