Phoenix Feather Sentinel

Ages ago, a great phoenix did battle with the demon lord Pazuzu. Though he nearly killed the abyssal master, the phoenix was struck down, and left to die on the first layer of the Abyss. He would have been rent asunder by roving demons were it not for a courageous legion of paladins who, hearing of the firebird’s plight, sought out a portal to the Abyss to rescue the noble being. In gratitude, the phoenix taught the paladins the secret arts of fire. Though the paladins soon went their separate ways, the arts the phoenix taught them lived on, passed down to those they saw worthy. Small groups of paladins trained as what they called Phoenix Feather Sentinels sprung up, seeking to defend all that was good. Noble warriors from foreign lands were also taught the arts, though they called themselves the Feng Huang Bushi. Even soulborns, the champions of incarnum, learned the art. Regardless of what they call themselves or their origins, all Phoenix Feather Sentinels are noble champions who have mastered the power of divine fire.

Class Features
All the following are class features of the Phoenix Feather Sentinel prestige class.

Weapon and Armor Proficiency
Phoenix Feather Sentinels gain no additional weapon or armor proficiencies.

Resistance to Fire (Ex)
A 1st level Phoenix Feather Sentinel gains resistance to fire 5. This resistance increases to 10 at 4th level and to 20 at 7th level.

Smite (Su)
When a new Phoenix Feather Sentinel level is attained, the character’s daily uses of his smite ability and extra damage dealt when smiting as if he had also attained a level in any one class with a smite ability that he belonged to before he added the prestige class. He does not, however, gain any other benefit a character of either class would have gained. If a character had more than one class that grants a smite ability before he became a Phoenix Feather Sentinel, he must decide to which class he adds each level of Phoenix Feather Sentinel to for purpose of determining smiting uses per day and extra damage.

Flaming Smite (Su)
Whenever a 2nd level Phoenix Feather Sentinel smites a creature, he may expend a single additional daily use of his smite ability plus one additional use per 3 class levels past 2nd. For every use expended, his smite attack deals an additional 1d6 points of fire damage damage per 2 class levels. At 5th level, the Sentinel may choose to have half this damage be fire damage, while the other half results directly from divine power and is therefore not subject to being reduced by resistance to fire-based attacks. At 10th level, the Sentinel may choose to deal only divine damage, rather than half fire and half divine. In addition, whenever a Phoenix Feather Sentinel makes a flaming smite, his weapon is treated as being good-aligned for overcoming damage reduction.

Extra Smiting (Su)
In addition to the daily uses granted by his class levels, a 3rd level Phoenix Feather Sentinel gains a single additional daily use of his smite class feature. At 6th level, and then again at 9th level, he gains an additional extra use.

Nova Strike (Su)
Once per day, when a 6th level Phoenix Feather Sentinel makes a flaming smite, he may choose to create a nova of fire. All within 30 ft. of the smote creature, except the Sentinel himself and the smote creature, take damage equal to the additional damage dealt by his flaming smite, with a Reflex save, DC 10 + ½ the Sentinel’s class level + the Sentinel’s Cha modifier, for half damage. Only creatures who he could normally smite–evil creatures for a paladin, oppositely aligned creatures for a soulborn, and so on–take this damage.

Phoenix Healing (Su)
Once per day, whenever a 7th level Phoenix Feather Sentinel would take fire damage, he may absorb it into his body, taking no damage. In addition, if the damage absorbed was equal to at least a tenth of his total hp, he is healed as per the regeneration spell, with a caster level equal to his class level.

Wings of Flame (Su)
As a standard action, a 8th level Phoenix Feather Sentinel may cause wings of fire to appear from his back, granting him a fly speed of 60 ft. with good maneuverability. In addition, he may attack with each of the wings as a secondary natural weapon, dealing 1d6 points of fire damage on a successful hit. When he uses these wings to make a flaming smite, he is treated as having expended one additional use of his smite ability to determine the damage dealt. These wings last until the Sentinel dismisses them, a swift action.

Glorious Rebirth (Su)
Once per month, a Phoenix Feather Sentinel who dies may choose to self immolate, destroying his body (but not his equipment) and releasing a 30 ft. radius burst of divine fire that deals 15d6 points of damage to all creatures caught in it, with a Reflex save, DC 10 + ½ the Sentinel’s class level + the Sentinel’s Cha modifier, for half damage. Only creatures who he could normally smite take this damage. Half the damage is fire damage, but the other half results directly from divine power and is therefore not subject to being reduced by resistance to fire-based attacks. 1d10 rounds after he self-immolates, he emerges from the ashes, resurrected as though by the true resurrection spell.

Immunity to Fire (Ex)
A 10th level Phoenix Feather Sentinel becomes immune to all fire damage.

Items
While not exclusive to the class, many Phoenix Feather Sentinels use or create the items detailed below.

Phoenix Feather Token
This small golden token, shaped like a feather, can be clipped onto a hat, headband, or similar item–regardless, it does not take up space on the body. If the wearer of a phoenix feather token has resistance to fire due to a racial or class ability (but not an item or spell), the amount increases by 5. If he does not already have resistance to fire, he gains no benefit from the token.

Moderate Abjuration, CL 8th. Craft Wondrous Item, resist energy. Cost 4,000 gp + Price 8,000 gp.

Phoenix Talon
When wielded by a good-aligned character capable of making smite attacks, this +1 flaming bastard sword becomes a +1 flaming burst holy bastard sword, and penetrates the damage reduction of evil creatures as if it was made out of both cold iron and silver. In addition, when used to make a smite attack, its enhancement bonus increases by one.

Moderate Evocation, CL 9th. Craft Magic Arms and Armor, flame strike, holy smite, creator must be good and capable of making a smite attack. Cost 22,500 gp + 1,800 xp. Price 45,000 gp.

Phoenix Call
Three times per day, when this golden whistle is blown, a standard action, it creates a keening sound like the shriek of a phoenix. All enemies within 30 ft. of the whistle blower must make a DC 14 Will save or be slowed for 1 round. In addition, once per day, by blowing this whistle, a phoeraMM3 may be summoned, which loyally serves its summoner for 5 rounds before returning. When a Phoenix Feather Sentinel uses the call, enemies slowed by it are slowed for 5 rounds rather than 3, and the summoned phoera serves for 10, rather than 5, rounds.

Faint Conjuration and Transmutation, CL 5th. Craft Wondrous Item, [i]slow, summon monster III[/sup]. Price 25,000 gp.

Nothing. The water just evaporates harmlessly.

P.S.: What happens if they run into a crysmal? Does it melt? ;D
I shoot you. With a hammer. Which is made of a thousand fiery suns, each of which is composed of other, smaller suns, that burn. With flames.

The flames are also on fire.

Ah, is this what you were referring to in my Soulfire Knights thread (http://www.giantitp.com/cgi-bin/yabb/YaBB.pl?board=Contests;action=display;num=11555744 92), D1? Like the name you came up with.

And am I imagining things, or is there some kind of inside joke with the crysmal thing?

Love the idea. Is it possible to do a PrC like this for thunderbirds? (not the show with puppets, an actual thunderbird)
