Is Smaug Red or Green.

Both of the above drawings are from tolkiens own hand, Which colour is smaug?

He would appear to be red-gold, judging from the drawings. I don't have The Hobbit on hand, though, and I don't remember if the book said.

I do have the Hobbit to hand, and it says "red-golden".

Bear in mind that Tolkien drafted and illustrated parts of his stories over decades and they changed a lot while he did so.

So I was right. It's because the bottom one looked more gold than green to me.

And here I thought I was going to have to use my epic Tolkien geekery. Oh well :P

Well, based solely on the pictures I would say that Smaug's color varies depending on the lighting and what angle you are viewing him from. :smallwink::smallbiggrin::smallwink:

He is red. He is described as red in the books, is one of the foundations of the red dragon in D&D (correct me if I'm wrong on this point but I think its safe to say he had alot to do with the inspiration), and the majority of the pictures drawn by tolkein and others depict him as a red dragon. So yeah, red.
