What do you think the most powerful class in 4e is? Why?

From my experience playing and running a game, I think it is the Fighter. They put out the same damage as a Striker but have an incredibly high AC.

This is not really the proper question.

To begin with, Fighters are not Strikers. Sneak Attack Damage, Quarry Damage, and so on quickly outpaces pure Weapon Damage - particularly if you don't have multi-attacks. The easiest way to see this is to note that a 1st level Dagger Rogue can do 1d4+2d6+CHA+DEX all day, while the Maul Fighter does 2d6+STR all day. Sure the Maul Fighter has some 4d6 and even 6d6 powers, but those are 1/EN or 1/DA - not the primary attack of the class.

Secondly, best at what? Strikers are best at dealing damage but not survivability; Defenders are great at surviving but not the best at dealing damage; Leaders don't deal a lot of damage nor do they survive well on their own, but they can seriously cripple enemies and buff their allies; Controllers cripple enemies well and do good burst damage, but not much else.

EDIT:
There was a thread discussing "best at roles" here (http://www.giantitp.com/forums/showthread.php?t=108245), if you'd like to look it over.
