View Full Version : Zrag the Flenser - Net/Scourge Tempest Fighter [PEACH]

Back in the 3.0 days I had this Half-Orc character that I really enjoyed playing. His name was Zrag and he was a former gladiator-slave who had won his freedom in combat on the sand of the arena. When the article We Who Are About to Die... (http://www.wizards.com/default.asp?x=dnd/drfe/20081017) was published in Dragon #368, I knew I had to resurrect Zrag as soon as PHBII was published and I could use a Half-Orc. The original Zrag was a barbarian and not at all similar to what I have created here. I wanted to use one of the new weapons from that article, along with the weapon's Power Swap feats, but they are only for martial classes, so no Barbarians. :smallfrown:

I had thought that Battlerager fighters were kind of like barbarians, and experimented with that for a while but didn't find anything workable. I checked on D&D message boards to see if anyone else was building characters with the stuff from this article, and I found this thread (http://forums.gleemax.com/showthread.php?t=1153060) where Andrew had created a Net and Trident fighter, like the iconic Myrmidon Gladiators of Rome (except for the whole being a robot thing). After I stole his idea of using the "Deft Hurler Style" with a net the whole build fell into place. Andrew's Fisherman character is a One-Handed Weapon Talent fighter, but I figured that a Tempest Fighter would be better because A) Gladiators don't wear heavy armor and B) I can get a +1 bonus with both weapons if my main hand weapon has the offhand property, too. Plus, you get a free feat.

So I searched around for the perfect off-hand weapon to go with my net and I found The Scourge. A suitably vicious looking weapon, and it has the added benefit of being the same weapon group as the net, so they will both benefit from the same feats and powers.

Well, enough back story, I built him up to level 20 (Arena Champion paragon path, of course). He is not intended to excel at the defender role - he learned to fight solo, after all. He seems to be some kind of weird striker/defender hybrid with a dash of controller. I wouldn't want to play him starting at level 1, but at level 4 he starts to get into his groove. Please Examine and Comment Honestly.
