View Full Version : Help make "my dream character" [3.5]

I already have it all built up, but I thought I'd share.

I had a dream the other night that I was on the Colbert show, he found out I played DnD, and he challenged me to a character building competition for a level 40 Gestalt to fight a character he came up with.

What I find bizarre is I came up with one(two) while dreaming, and I'm curious as to how my two builds stack up against other peoples. (Two because obviously, I subconsciously built Colbert's too).

I'm also exceedingly curious if they count as RAW/RAI (not counting the expressed rule changes) or if my imaginings tore the RAW/RAI to shreds.

Books allowed:
Two "Complete" Books.
Draconomicon.
Core Books.
Unearthed Arcana.
One Dragon or Dungeon Magazine.

Aim:
Level 40 Gestalt Character as an antagonist with at least 10 Paladin levels.
You should have 20K XP leftover for anything else you want to do.

Rule changes:
Paladins can be any alignment.
Any feats specific to LG Paladins can have equatable feats replace them.

The Paladin he made was: Paladin 40, Wizard 25/Abjurant Champion 5/Spellsword 10. It was a dream so I didn't pick up on everything, but he seemed to be wearing Mithril Ceremonial Full Plate and have a Mithril Ceremonial Tower Shield, each with +5 defending spikes. The mount was a Celestial Charger. I don't know his feats, except to say he definitely does have epic spells. Specifically he has a spell with the Slay Seed (http://www.d20srd.org/srd/epic/seeds/slay.htm), though it is not pumped past 80HD, it was cast as a quickened action, and it has almost certainly had the DC increased incredibly.

I'll be posting my response later.

If no-one is interested that's fine. I was just thinking about it and thought it might be fun for some people.

That... Is quite possibly the geekiest thing, ever...

You obviously don't know me very well. I'm proud to say this is not even my geekiest thing ever. ;)

I once had a dream where I was attacked by racists in the UK.
I won a fight with one of them and the other called out "I can't believe you lost to a 1 hit dice Paki", at which point I go "Hey, **** *** I'm level adjusted!"

It gets worse. Their attractive friend (sister maybe) stops the fight and introduces herself as a stripper/lawstudent multiclass. Now bearing in mind, even in my dream I was even thinking this makes no sense. Why would my mind be taking me here.

She then invites me to her "Law School/Strip Bar", which again, I'm thinking... what... the ....hell. Until of course I arrive and see the sign on the door. Legal Briefs.

My mind is a twisted ball of puns and DnD. Lose hope all ye who enter.

I can't help thinking that this might make the best porno ever.

You think you're geeky? My very first thought after reading that was "tower shields can't have spikes!"

Very nice catch! Assume for now then that it was a heavy metal shield, which might be a better description of what I saw to begin with. :)

What about a Warmage 20/Sorceror 20//Favored Soul 20/Spirit Shaman 20

All charisma based spontaneous casting(well, you need 19 wisdom, but you say that like its a bad thing). 20d8 and 20d6(or better, I don't know FS's HD). You get 13 feats. You'll have plenty of 9th level spells. You'll also have 12 epic spell slots. You can fly.

Contingent Resurrection.

Eidolon

Epic Counterspell

Summon Monster IX

Answer me this:

Exactly how many flying elder air elementals(min 100) can a 40th level wizard kill before he runs out of spells? When being harried by inivisible flying Eidolons(min 10)?

Afterwards, how well is he capable of defending himself against an opponent who has only expended, at most, 3 epic spells and <5 normal spells. Who can fly. Who has 9 epic spells left. Who might have had enough time to rest for 8 hours, and therefore have refreshed his total spells to fullness and recast contingent resurrection, and can do it all again?

"You kids play nice, alright?" -me, to paladin before teleporting away.

But you lose epic casting levels. Those are more important than extra spells. I vote for Favored Soul5/Prestige Paladin10/Favored Soul+25//Sorceror6/Binder1/Anima Mage29/Shadowcraft Mage5

Could be difficult to get 0% ASF, so Auto Still is a must.

ummm, guys, I think that he already had his build...ish...thing. He doesn't need any build help, unlike most other posts in this forum, often including me :smalltongue:

Just make sure to grab Battle Blessing feat from CC if you're going to go Prestige Paladin. At the cost of 5 CL (because OP wanted to take 10 levels of Paladin) you're casting all your spells as quickened! :smallwink:

It's a rather fancy dream btw. I like it XD

Is there a way to somehow get epic spells that count as paladin spells for purposes of Battle Blessing?

Because then you take Ruby Knight Vindicator and rewrite reality 3 times a round. I think that wins.

I think a paladin/hexblade/cleric of pelor (prestige class)/duelist build would be what I'd make

All very cool builds. :)

I'm just about to go home, so I might not have time to post the full thing today, but for those of you interested my build was something like:

40 levels of Neutral Evil Paladin.
4 levels of Ranger.
35 levels of Animal Focus Druid. (Dragon Magazine 347)
1 level of Beastmaster. (C.Adventurer)

The above gives Animal Companion as level 43 Druid and Paladin Mount as level 40 Paladin.

Important feats:
Devoted Tracker (Cadv). This combines your Paladin Mount and Ranger Animal into a single creature. Ranger and Druid already stack IIRC. The feat does other stuff too but they are unimportant by comparison, especially as I'm only taking 4 levels of Ranger.

Dragon Mount (Draconomicon). This is where RAI gets a bit iffy. In the dream I had a Huge Black Dragon. As Wizards specifically say that HD increase in animals do not increase the size of animals, this seems strange, however it may be possible specifically because I was allowed to take the PC progression from Draconomicon, but this breaks RAW.

AFAIK RAW is not clear on if animals increase in size as they gain HD, but I could be wrong.

It may also be some combination of Dragon Cohort or simply raising a dragon as per the raising/convincing rules in Draco.

Either way it is possible to get a Large Dragon with over 30 additional HD without breaking RAW.

Given that you're doing that, I'd like to add something to that theme:

Paladinx/Suel ArcanamachY/GeomancerZ//Druid40 for epic wildshaping, as well as ability to quicken your paladin, druid, and Suel Arcanamach spells with Battle Blessing as a result of Geomancer's spell versatility (and epic progression's extrapolated epic spell versatility). Take Serenity from Dragon Compendium for Wisdom instead of Charisma based saves, but you need at least 13 charisma to cast Suel Arcanamach spells and qualify for Geomancer. If you can, try adding some more stuff that adds effects onto your spells, like adding a level of Warmage to get Warmage Edge or adding some beguiler to get Cloaked Casting (but you can already cast in armor and crap).

Just take 10 paladin +however much you need to qualify for Geomancer, then enough Arcanamach to qualify for Geomancer, then Geomancer for the rest.

Take improved spell capacity (http://www.d20srd.org/srd/epic/feats.htm#improvedSpellCapacity) 5 times, then take epic spellcasting. It helps that it's on the list of paladin epic bonus feats.

A single classed paladin could get epic spellcasting at 29th level, excluding possible tricks to speed it up.

Wait, what? Name one thing in epic casting that has anything to do with caster level. I've looked through the SRD a couple times, and its only mentioned in concerns to dispel related effects.

The point was to overwhelm him with targets, draining his Save/Lose spells and precious spell slots(epic or not) while consuming very little of my own overall potency. Remember, he's a wizard/paladin basically. Everything on his list must be prepared, with the exception of his epic slots. Worst case, I consume 1/4 of his overall resources while only spending 1 level(if I died to his epic slay) and I'm still capable of repeating the eidolon+elder elemental trick a couple times before I start reaching my limits.

Obviously, I'm toying with him, since Momento Mori could solve the whole problem very easily.

1st-9th level spells are still caster level based, and there are plenty of high pre-epic spells that continue to be useful in quite a bit of epic play. (After all, you only get a small amount of epic spells/day, and depending on what epic spells you have researched, you might not even use them.)

True, Time stop can still be way more powerful than a lot of the listed 9ths.

That's not CL dependent though, for something dependent on CL, you'd want something like gate where you can summon a 2xCL HD outsider.
