View Full Version : [Epic Creatures] Where is fancy bred?

Twilight House

Of all the Faerie courts, that of the Twilight is the most disturbing, even to other fey. It is where the wild fancy and grim nonsense of the faerie people comes to a head. It does not truly hold allegiance to any house, yet all of faerie when they dance their dark waltz send their essence to this Court. As such all other houses are as wary of the Twilight Court as mortals are of normal fey, for it is a place where even the fears and delights of the Fair Folk appear.

The Twilight Court is associated with the natural function of slumber and daydream. It straddles the line between Reality and Dream, sleeping and waking, night and day, sun and moon. The blurred line of chaos and law, good and evil, that all fey seem to balance upon is at its strongest here.

Much of the land of Twilight is as a never-ending forest eternally lit by moon and startlingly bright stars. It is never quite light, never quite dark, with patches of shadow alongside scintillating clearings.

The land can change however, and much of it seems to move, entire forests uprooting and walking, or flying off, or dissolving all together. Those areas held specifically by the Twilight Court however changes only at their whim, which is far more dangerous. Often storms will brew and cloudbursts will soak an area, brought forth by the tears of a faerie weeping as she dances.

It is in this place where insight can be read in the very grass beneath the feet or where the moon passes through the branches. Divinations are performed here to great affect, though even the untrained may occasionally be swept away in visions of grave import.

Though there are no true 'leaders' in such a place as the Twilight Court, if any could be named it would be the Lord Beast and Mother Whimsy.

Unaligned: Lord Beast and Mother Whimsy have no true alignment, blurring the line between chaos and law, good and evil. They are not even neutral. As such they are unaffected by all alignment based weapons and spells and may cast those with alignment descriptors without any positive or negative effects.

Lord Beast is all dark desire and exquisite fear, stalking the horrific, most perilous locales of the Twilight Realm. He fights back the true horrors that eternally threaten to cross over and frighten off those that would seek to enter, or eat them himself, depending on his mood. He is the shadow in the corner of your eye and the unnamed terror. He is the beast that inhabits the deepest recesses of the id.

He is only with great difficulty described. He seems a great shaggy, silvery furred creature of horrible beauty, only vaguely mannish, as often upon all fours as bipedal, and bulging monstrously with muscle. All four limbs end in retractable ripping claws. His eyes are frighteningly large and depthless, peering like two bottomless pits from an enormous noble face both mannish and beastial that seems all muzzle and writhing mane. Those that peer within see their own primal lusts and will often destroy themselves seeking them. His mouth is toothless, though a tongue like a great vine hung with clusters of black grapes writhes within. He is permanently surrounded by a twilight gloom as if lit by starlight that reflects off his coat.

Combat
Lord Beast does battle with no rules and no afterthought, nor mercy. Unless particularly hungered or angered he tends to play first, stalking and frightening his prey in a chase as mischievous as any fey of song and story, and infinitely more vicious. Once he tires or grows bored he tends to snap them up to the nightmare gullet to toy with them further, if he's of the mind, or drain sustenance.

If he has been angered or insulted he goes forth with a rage that literally shakes the land, laying all to waste in pursuit of his victim.

Lord Beast's natural weapons are considered Epic and Ghost Touch.

Lord Beast is considered to have a Divine Rank of 1 for the purpose of manipulating the Twilight Realm. He can bring forth any non-damaging sound, light level, or scent and can walk across any surface as the Spider Climb spell.

Cunning (Ex): Lord Beast retains his Dexterity bonus to AC (if any) even if he is caught flat-footed or struck by an invisible attacker. However, he still loses his Dexterity bonus to AC if immobilized. Lord Beast cannot be flanked.

Gut Wrenching Terror (Su): Lord Beast can try to swallow a grabbed Colossal or smaller opponent by making a successful grapple check, his maw enlarging impossibly to encompass them.
A swallowed creature finds themselves in an endless dreamscape that fills Lord Beast's belly. He has complete control over the landscape and may alter it at a whim. He can craft any creature or creatures within, though the combined HD total cannot exceed his own.
He can drain 1 to 4d6 points from all mental stats from each being within. Each round they may attempt a DC 49 will save to resist the drain. For each point of drain Lord Beast gains an equal amount of hit points. If he would exceed his normal hit point total his Strength score increases by 1 for each 10 points he gains past his limit.
He can also cause them to see their worst terrors at will as the Weird spell, though it is not an illusion but phantasmal creatures given true form in the dreamscape.
There is no limit to how many creatures Lord Beast may consume. He may regurgitate a swallowed creature at any time, though not one he has crafted in his dreamscape.
If Lord Beast is killed his belly may be cut open and the dreamscape released. Those within appear in the adjacent squares, but so do any creatures created within, including the living Weirds if any (who can last for a number of rounds out of the region of dreams for a number of rounds equal to Lord Beast's charisma score). If Lord Beast is killed by complete destruction of his body then the dreamscape is lost to the region of dreams, along with those inside.

Impossible Stealth (Ex): Lord Beast can use the Hide skill even while being observed, in any surrounding, and cannot be heard unless he wishes it.

Improved Grab (Ex): To use this ability, Lord Beast must hit a creature of any size with his tongue attack or two claw attacks. He can then attempt to start a grapple as a free action without provoking an attack of opportunity.

If he wins the grapple check, he establishes a hold and can attempt to swallow the opponent in the following round.

Night Terror (Ex): Lord Beast is immune to mind-affecting effects by non-fey. He is also immune to fear, confusion, sleep and poison, as well as all dream-based powers and spells.

Passion of Wrath (Ex): Once per encounter as a free action on his turn, Lord Beast may give himself up to a wrath so utterly consuming and mindless that little is known to survive even having witnessed it.
While in the throes of his wrath he gains a +10 bonus to his Strength and if he makes a full attack action, gains an extra attack each round at his highest bonus. The wrath lasts for a number of rounds equal to 10 plus his Constitution modifier.
He will attack all those he perceives as his foes with complete abandon. If he runs out of enemies before the wrath ends he attacks the nearest creatures to him regardless of consideration for friendship, compassion or even his own health.
However, as long as the wrath continues he is not treated as disabled at 0 hit points nor treated as dying at -1 to -9 hit points/ Even if reduced to -10 hit points or less he continues to fight normally until the wrath ends. At that point, the effects of his wounds apply normally if they have not yet been healed.

Pounce (Ex): If Lord Beast charges, he can make a full attack, including four rake attacks.

Primal Desires (Su): Lord Beast has a gaze attack that affects those he peers at within 100 feet unless they succeed on a DC 49 will save (Charisma-based). He may choose which desire to inflame each time he peers.

Beastial Hunger: This causes the being to become ravenous with hunger and prefer meat whenever possible. They must eat a day's worth of rations each hour. Each hour they do not eat is as a day. If they have to they will turn upon the nearest being to feed.

Berserker's Rage: This causes the being to be filled with paranoia and a hair temper. Even the slightest provocation sets him off and he'll attack friend or foe, trying his utmost to kill the creature. Each round he attacks while in this rage he takes 2d4 intelligence damage. If reduced to 0 intelligence he does not go unconscious, but becomes Mindless. The mindless being can continue attacking, though the damage becomes drain.

Raging Desire: This causes the being to become filled with insatiable lust and sexual desire. Those affected seek out the nearest desirable being of their kind to pair, forcibly if need be. They take 2d6 points of Constitution damage each day as they are unable to properly rest or sleep from this desire.

Psi-like Abilities: Manifester level 50th. Save DC's are Charisma-based.
At Will - Attraction, Aversion, Dream Travel

Rake (Ex): Attack bonus +72 melee, damage 4d6+10.

Regeneration (Ex): Damage such as from mind thrust or ultrablast do normal damage to Lord Beast.

If Lord Beast loses a limb or body part, the lost portion regrows in 1d6 minutes (the detached piece dies and decays normally). Lord Beast can reattach the severed member instantly by holding it to the stump.

Rend Reality (Ex): Lord Beast can rip the fabric of the multiverse itself into shreds. If he deals 100 points of damage total with his natural attacks in a single area he opens a way to any plane he wishes to visit as the Gate spell. Reality heals itself at a rate of 1 point per round.

This tear in reality is not visible unless one is using True Seeing. Those who try to teleport to or from an area within 60 feet of this tear have a chance of being violently displaced as the Dimension Twister power except they take 20d6 points of damage. This chance is equal to the amount of damage reality currently has from the wound. For instance if it had healed 10 points after sustaining 100 points of damage there would be a 90% chance of being displaced.

Telepathy (Su): Lord Beast can communicate telepathically with any creature within 90 feet that has an Intelligence score. The creature can respond to Lord Beast if it wishes - no common language is needed.

Truest Seeing (Ex): Lord Beast can see all things as they truly are as if continuously under the effects of a True Seeing spell. In fact, those he sees converts to their true forms, all illusion and disguise falling away.

Toothless Before the Lord (Ex): Any being who bites the Beast has each and every tooth fall out of it's head as soon as it touches his hide, dealing no damage nor inflicting disease or venom. These teeth will not grow back with regeneration or any healing spell, though Remove Curse may lift it with an opposed caster level check (the beast's check equal to his HD).

Twilight Shroud (Su): Any area Lord Beast visit darkens to an eerie twilight out to a mile. Those within take a -10 penalty to all saves against fear, illusion, and mind-affecting effects. As well, those in this area must succeed on a DC 49 will save each round or become Shaken. Illumination spells, powers and abilities are useless as the gloom is only within one's mind. This is a mind-affecting, fear effect.

Worship the Nightmare (Ex): Lord Beast's constantly emits powerful pheromones that works on the body and mind. Those that breathe within 30 feet (if the being has the scent ability this ability works out to the limit of said scent) of Lord Beast must succeed on a DC 56 fortitude save or find themselves in a state of exquisite rapture mixed with nigh worshipful terror. They find themselves rooted to the spot and weak, willing to do anything for Lord Beast as the Dominate Monster spell, except they will perform any action, even self-destructive ones, without qualm and protection from evil does not ward against it. He normally uses this ability to direct them to stay still so that he may feast upon them.
Those affected also gain a +4 morale bonus to their attack, saves and skills.
Lord Beast may visit the dreams of any being he has dominated, able to enter them physically at will with his Dream Travel ability.
Mother Whimsy is immune to this ability, though still gains the morale bonus.
The save DC is Constitution based.

Mother Whimsy has no true form but that of moment's whim. She most commonly appears as hardly more than a girl, her eyes wide with rapturous fascination. She is everything ever wanted, anything that can be realized, nothing that can be grasped. She is as solid as a stray thought, enduring as a spark of inspiration, no more yielding than a dream.

Tended by many, in particular the honeydew, she gives frequent birth to daydreams, desire and other intangible things. Only when the more romantic desires fill her does she descend within the forest to find The Beast, allowing her to give birth to a prince or princess of twilight, beings of unequaled and eerie beauty. They are the most fey of fey, who may bring peace or pestilence, horror or historic change to the courts of Faerie. Mother Whimsy cares not what she births as long as it is new and nary seen a'fore. She is tended by many beings who both care for her and her young as well as those who constantly suggest and tempt that which she begets.
She sails through Dream and Twilight within a great castle upon the keel of the mighty galleon Fancy, stirring consciousness and imagination in its wake.

Combat
Mother Whimsy treats battle much like she does anything else, with fascination and enthusiasm. She may craft scores of legions of warriors to do battle or take shape herself into a horrible monstrosity. She may see how fast she can kill or how long she can draw out the game, whatever amuses her at the time. Only while giving birth to a twilight prince or princess does she delegate battle to others, her concentration and care being only for the child. She may also call upon Lord Beast who will arrive with but a thought.

Mother Whimsy's natural weapons and any she wields are considered epic for the purpose of overcoming damage reduction.

Mother Whimsy is considered to have a Divine Rank of 5 for the purpose of manipulating the Twilight Realm.

Awaken the Dream (Su): Mother Whimsy experiences all of creation as but a lucid dream, without rules or boundaries, and can give birth to a living dream. As a full round action she can do near anything as the Reality Revision power, though she may duplicate any power or spell of 9th level or lower (caster level equal to her HD). She may not however make a permanent change to herself through this power, such as an inherent bonus to stats, though she may heal herself. If there is any being with an intelligence score within 500 feet however she and the being must make opposed Concentration checks even if the being does not wish to. If successful, Mother Whimsy alters whatever she wishes. If multiple thinking creatures are present, each one makes a Concentration check. The highest roll amongst the beings is then used, with an additional +1 bonus per creature making a check.

If any ongoing effect brought about by this ability extends beyond 500 feet of Mother Whimsy it fades away. Instantaneous effects however remain. For example a summoned dragon fades away if it passes 500 feet but a being killed by the dragon remains dead.

Becoming (Su): Mother Whimsy can assume the likeness of any sized creature she can imagine (in other words, anything) as a standard action that does not provoke attacks of opportunity. Her abilities do not change, but she actually becomes that creature and True Seeing does not reveal otherwise.

Eye of the Dreamt (Ex): Mother Whimsy, while within the realm of Twilight or the Regions of Dreams, may use Hypercognition as a free action by observing the dreamscape around her.

Lost In Daydream (Ex): Any being that attempts to use telepathy or a mind-affecting effect on Mother Whimsy must succeed on a DC 54 Will save or have it's consciousness pulled into the eternal dream in which she exists as the Microcosm power (no HP limit and can affect any creature with an intelligence score, whether they are normally affected by mind-affecting powers or not). If they make the save she is affected by the ability but only for a round. The save DC is Charisma-based.

Lunatic Fringe (Ex): Mother Whimsy is not, strictly speaking, real. She is such stuff as dreams are made of and her movements and location follows no rules. As such all melee and ranged attacks against her are assessed an 80 percent miss chance.

Psi-like Abilities: Manifester level 60. Save DC's are Intelligence-based.
At Will - Co-opt Concentration, Dream Travel, Greater Metamorphosis, Implanted Suggestion, Realized Potential, Shatter Mind Blank
6/day - Insanity, Psionic Major Creation, Psychic Reformation

Silvery Path (Ex): Wherever Mother Whimsy walks a path forms until the next morning light, even in midair, though can only be seen by other creatures of Faerie. At night however the path become visible to all living creatures, lit very faintly as if by moonlight. Non-fey that walk it at night must succeed on a DC 57 save each round or fall asleep upon it. If they do their minds continue walking along it until they become forever lost within the Twilight realm. Their body evaporates with the touch of the first ray of sunlight. If ever they leave Twilight they die. No known spell or power can reverse this, though Mother Whimsy may use 10 consecutive uses of reality revision to craft them a new body. However, when they sleep their minds visit the Twilight realm and can be detected and Dominated at will by Mother Whimsy. As well she may take over their sleeping body as the Magic Jar spell.

If Mother Whimsy is killed she is capable of being reborn in the dreamscape of any she has crafted a body for next they dream. Only by killing every one of them can she truly be defeated.

This is a mind-affecting sleep effect. The save DC is Intelligence-based.

Spontaneous (Ex): Mother Whimsy is completely unpredictable. As such no one may gain an insight bonus against her and is immune to Divination spells and Clairsentient powers.

Thoughtful (Su): Mother Whimsy can communicate telepathically with any creature within 120 feet that has an Intelligence score. The creature can respond to Mother Whimsy if it wishes - no common language is needed. As well, she is also affected as by the Empathy power to this distance, as well as Mind Probe, the latter resisted with a DC 57 will save. She may use the Correspond power with anyone who has come within 120 feet of her. The save DC is Intelligence-based.

True Seeing (Ex): Mother Whimsy can see all things as they truly are as if continuously under the effects of a True Seeing spell.

Unwaking (Ex): Mother Whimsy is continually in the midst of a waking dream and as such is immune to confusion, fear, illusion, sleep and spells or powers dealing with dreams. She is immune to all mind-affecting effects of non-fey.

Nice abilities. Very nice flavor, too. But the CR/actual power ratio is a bit problematic and some of the mechanics may not work as you intend them to.

Lord Beast;

1) His CR is definitely too high. Compare with the Elder Titan, which is CR 30, casts as a 29th lvl caster, has 70 HD, some serious SLAs and epic spells. I'd say CR 35-36 is more accurate.
2) His Spell/Power Resistance is too low. A rating of 50 would not even inconvenience a 30th level spellcaster; 34 CL, +2 penetration, +4 item bonus, +10 spell bonus (assay resist/truecasting) OR arcane mastery and they automatically bypass it.
3) Infinite Deflection. Else he dies a horrible death to a 20th level orb-user. Alternatively, you could give him the Carapace ability to deflect lines/cones/rays like the Tarrasque has.

Mother Whimsy

1) Her CR is a bit low. She may have fewer HP initially than Lord Beast (or most other epic creatures) and less AC but she has other defences and her DCs are higher.
2) Awaken the Dream is obscenely powerful for her CR. Its drawback-that enemies can "disbelieve" it-will not apply because of her low CR; PCs and normal-HD enemies that face her simply can't make the check. Also, she could create effects where no creature is nearby that affect stuff elsewhere such as using the Travel function of Wish to take creatures from any plane into any other plane, employing Gate to call 120-HD dragons, opening portals to send effects through them and creating effects to leave behind. Maybe you should limit the effects to a certain range from her so they fade after 500 ft from her or so?

I am a bit confused. As a full attack Lord Beast can make 4 claw attack per round, but do 2 of those include the rake? It's not clear if you meant that he gets two claws and two rakes. Even if the mechanics for the two are the same, you should list them separately.

Bluff and Intimidate seem like odd skills for Lord Beast since he doesn't seem to be the cunning type. Not having the Listen and Spot skills at all seems rather detrimental.

Touch and Flat-footed ACs are missing from both Lord Beast and Mother Whimsy.

If you are going to "treat" Mother Whimsy as having Divine Rank 5, then perhaps you should just outright give it to her and list it properly.

Is there any relationship between the Twilight Court to the Seelie and Unseelie Courts? I see Mother Whimsy as another variation of Queen Mab albeit a far more powerful version.

And now I am curious, what exactly is a "honeydew" other than a melon?

What, exactly, bypasses Lord Beast's regeneration? You say "such as mind thrust and psionic blast" - Mind Thrust is untyped damage and Psionic Blast doesn't even deal damage...

Fixed a lot of what was mentioned.

Well, here's the thing. If we're going to bring in optimized builds then nothing will really be good enough.

3) Infinite Deflection. Else he dies a horrible death to a 20th level orb-user. Alternatively, you could give him the Carapace ability to deflect lines/cones/rays like the Tarrasque has.
He'd die a horrible death... if he wasn't ticked off. Otherwise he'd keep going at them no matter how fried he was. Then once he did die... he'd regenerate. They'd try acid and fire and think he was gone. Next time he'd know what to do.

If you are going to "treat" Mother Whimsy as having Divine Rank 5, then perhaps you should just outright give it to her and list it properly.
Only in the Twilight Realm does she have it though.

Is there any relationship between the Twilight Court to the Seelie and Unseelie Courts? I see Mother Whimsy as another variation of Queen Mab albeit a far more powerful version.
If Seelie was a 'good' court and Unseelie an 'evil' court then the Twilight court would be a taco.

They are of the courts of faerie, but also their own. Basically it's where the minds of fey go when they sleep.

And now I am curious, what exactly is a "honeydew" other than a melon?
Linked them

What, exactly, bypasses Lord Beast's regeneration? You say "such as mind thrust and psionic blast" - Mind Thrust is untyped damage and Psionic Blast doesn't even deal damage...
Meant Ultrablast. But regeneration works normally on the damage, even if unnamed, as long as it's hit point damage. Lord Beast does not regenerate this special damage.

Huge creatures cannot swallow whole Colossal creatures -- not unless you give them the equivelant of a stomach of holding which is really stretching the limit of credibility (even in a fantasy setting) with Lord Beast's belly becoming a "dreamscape." Granted, it's a nifty idea but I find the execution a bit unwieldy. If it is a dreamscape, then the obvious means of escape would be for the swallowed victim to WAKE UP That's not the case.

You compound the problem by throwing several different special abilities under one heading. Swallow Whole, Drain and use of a spell-like ability are all listed under Gut Wrenching Terror. While the name is evocative, the truth is there are already mechanics for these things and you aren't helping the poor DM who has to search for what the ability does. Breaking it down into smaller components makes it a lot clearer.

Your stat block still could use a little work.
Attack: a single attack namely one claw. That's it. Not 2, not 4. Attack is a single attack.

Full Attack: I assume that Lord Beast only has 4 appendages. You mention that he is "He seems a great shaggy, silvery furred creature of horrible beauty, only vaguely mannish, as often upon all fours as bipedal..." Otherwise, your statblock seems to indicate that he has 4 claws and that the rake was left off. If you meant that he has 2 claws and 2 rakes, it is worded incorrectly.

Only two front claws would gain the benefit of Improved Critical (Claws) but not his back claws in the rake. The rake is a separate attack.

[Edit: actually it doesn't matter whether he has multiattack for purposes of the Rake. My mistake.]

Full Attack: 2 claws +74 melee (4d6+21/19-20x2) and tongue +69 melee (1d6+10)

[
If Seelie was a 'good' court and Unseelie an 'evil' court then the Twilight court would be a taco.

And your point was? I am going to assume that your Twilight Court has no impact really on the realm of faerie and that it is more of a demi-plane within the realm of faerie than an actor in it. Seems Mother Whimsy is quite powerful while within the dreamscape but outside it her powers are greatly diminished.

Non-fey that walk it at night must succeed on a DC 57 save each round or fall asleep upon it. If they do their minds continue walking along it until they become forever lost within the Twilight realm. Their body evaporates with the touch of the first ray of sunlight. If ever they leave Twilight they die.

Not sure how I'd describe a mind walking on path but I think you mean that they are sleepwalking and eventually become physically trapped in the Twilight realm. What kind of Save (Fort? Will? Reflex?) should they be making, and on what basis? I don't like just having their body evaporate -- do they then rain down later? That was just a bit weird.

Why would you die if you get to leave the Twilight realm just because you fell asleep on some glowing path? It seems more like an afterthought because you have no mechanics to avoid it. No save and nothing more about how they die. Do they spontaenously combust or just keel over? And to be fair, at this point death is only temporary for PCs at this level. It's almost gratuitous.

Debby

I updated this to correct the rake.

When a creature enters the region of dreams physically they can be killed and what happens is 'real' to them.

No, that would make it HARDER. He'd have to look for each thing then that happens to the swallowed person.

Full Attack: You have still left out the rake as part of this. I assume that Lord Beast only has 4 appendages.
Four claws, four rakes. Rakes are not listed in full attack.

Only two front claws would gain the benefit of Improved Critical (Claws) but not his back claws in the rake.
Says who?

And your point was? I am going to assume that your Twilight Court has no impact really on the realm of faerie and that it is more of a demi-plane within the realm of faerie than an actor in it. Seems Mother Whimsy is quite powerful while within the dreamscape but outside it her powers are greatly diminished.
It's not really a demi-plane. Like portions of the plane of shadow are 'darker' than the rest, this is more dreamy than the already surreal realm of the fey.

They start walking on the path, they fall asleep, but their mind keeps going and find themselves in the Twilight realm. And yes it's weird, it's supposed to be weird.

They die because their body dissolved. Rules for dream regions is that if the mind leaves the dream realm they die.

So he gets 4 claw attacks and 4 rakes? How many appendages does this guy have? I assumed 2 claws and 2 rakes from the description. Rakes in this case being done with the rear legs and claws with the front. Am I missing something? Improved Critical on claws but not the rake. you'd need another feat for that.

BTW, you are correct: the rakes aren't listed on the full attack line. I'll go back and fix that.

Just because a thing CAN happen, doesn't necessarily mean it MUST happen. That's why breaking down what can happen after Lord Beast swallows a victim whole should should be broken down in stages.

First a victim is swallowed whole and then finds himself in the dreamscape which is controlled by Lord Beast. Then Lord Beast CAN drain mental stats. I would have changed this to 4d6-3 for a useable range.

Making 49 DC Will save every round is too much if you ask me. Also can others attempt to cut open the belly [sounds like a called shot or sunder] while Lord Beast is still alive?

Off topic, but where did you find the art for these two?

they're still claw attacks. rend damage would go up too with improved natural attack. they are classified as a different kind of attack and require special circumstances to use, but they still use the same weapon; kinda like an attack of opportunity or something.

Hmm, have a point, though could always dig in with all four claws and then rip down with them...

Well, you gotta think of the level though. These folks probably have stats in the 30's to 40's (yeah, epic makes me twitch) so an average of 12. This is like 1d6 at lower levels.

If you allow called shots I'd suppose so, but that'd be like calling shots for medusa's eyes or somesuch.
