Final Fantasy Tactics Advance is a strategy game by Square Enix (at that point named simply Square). If you've played Final Fantasy Tactics for the Playstation One or the PSP remake, take that and move it to the Game Boy Advance, and you've got the game, more or less. This game is really addictive, and if you seek it, there's alot of fun to be had. The plot's a bit simple, but that's okay, for me at least. Now, I won't be starting up the LP for a few days, and there might not be that much participation from the audience (you, hopefully), but it is starting with a vote right now.

This is Marche Radiuju, or something like that. He is the main character in the game. Now, the game splits units into Races and Jobs (to be explained more later) and I need you guys to decide what Marche is going to be. He's a human, so he has access to human jobs. Here's a rundown of what he can be.
Soldier - Hit things with a sword and weaken their stats too. Somehow.
Paladin - Hit things with a sword still, but use a few holy attacks. Needs Soldier experience.
Fighter - Stab things with blades and get cool attacks like rending air and hitting everything surrounding you. Needs Soldier experience.
Thief - Stab things with knives and steal from them.
Ninja - Slice things with Katanas, cast jutsus, and even learn how to dual-wield. Needs Thief experience. Banned because I already have one.
White Mage - Heal things, except undead, which you kill.
Black Mage - Cast Fire, Ice, and Thunder spells. And that's it. Banned, because I already have one.
Illusionist - Hit all your enemies with spells. Needs White AND Black Mage experience. Despite Black Mage being banned, this isn't
Blue Mage - Learn to do what monsters do. Banned because I hate it.
Archer - Shoot arrows that somehow make your opponents fall in love with you, blind them, or disable them.
Hunter - Shoot stronger arrows and fight better against monsters.

I'd vote for Paladin for the huge defense and pretty good offense. And possibly going into ninja for dual-wielding. At least in Tactics Advance 2 you could dual wield a decent selection, and I had my paladin dual wield Excaliburs. Multiple Excaliburs, that's right.

Having played this game a fair bit, I know that if you're crazy enough to complete the battle tournament an insane number of times, the best combo for humans is Paladin with Ranger's Hunt ability, and the Sequence Sword. Hunt gives you access to Sonic Boom, which turns your attack to an area attack with decent range, and unlike most other area attacks, will get stronger with the Sequence Sword.

For me personally, I don't like leveling up Marche (or any human) as a Paladin, even though that class as some of the best gear. For level-ups, I go with Ninja, as speed is crucial in this game. With high speed, you can take more turns than your opponents, to say nothing of Haste. Ninja also gives you the fantastic Double Sword ability, which lets you equip 2 weapons, thus learning abilities way faster. Ninja also has great stat growths in other areas anyway. It's a bit lacking in defense, I guess, but the Paladin's gear and abilities make up for it. So I'd level as Ninja, and in endgame just switch to Paladin for the gear. Double Sword is so worth it.

If you refuse to make him a Ninja, go with Hunter. Still gets decent speed, and now gets better attack power. Plus you eventually can get Ultima Shot, which would probably be any Human's most powerful attack, period. Be sure to pick up Concentrate while as an Archer, too. That thing's just sick. A Hunter with Concentrate, Ultima Shot, and a really good bow like Max's Oathbow can probably 1-shot a lot of the game's enemies and bosses from a distance, with remarkably high accuracy too.

Hunter is decent for the solo survival missions with Marche mostly due to Auto-regen. But do give him some of the Thief's steal skills beforehand if you can. If you managed to do a bit of sequence breaking and obtain Steal:Weapon before the solo fight with Llednar Twem, you can just steal his weapon right off the bat, making the fight ridiculously easy. If not, then maybe you can just run, try to hold him back with stuff like Aim:Legs, and just let Auto-regen do its thing.

To be honest, I'm glad somebody's choosing Fighters, I think they're pretty epic.

That's the worst part of the main characters: they don't take on new costumes for their jobs.

And, I have to hand it to you guys, I was gonna start my playthrough as a White Mage, but then another vote came in for Hunter. It's got a chance now, just one more vote for a tie. You surprised me.

Oh, fighters are definitely awesome - I ran through Tactics with Marche as a fighter (dual-wield Ayvuir Red and Ayvuir Blue? Yes, please!)

But I thought that White Mage is kind of a bizarre choice, and would be more interesting.

I also hated how in Tactics 1 it was never explained why bosses never got jailed, even for red card infraction, whereas in 2 its explained that only those who choose to abide by the laws can get punished by it, and as such only those who follow the laws get the benefits: Which in the game is the boost, the immortality and the Bonus Items if you don't break the law. Felt like it made more sense.

The snowball fight started, and without waiting, Ritz scooped up a handful of snow, ran up to one of the bullies, and pelted him with it.

I'd never played any games like this before, not off the computer anyway, everybody took turns. The girl from the other team walked up to me on her turn, and instead of throwing a snowball like the others, she started talking to me. But for some reason, that made Ritz a bit angry, so she walked up behind the girl and shoved a snowball down her jacket. Luckily, Mr. Leslaie wasn't watching.

I also hated how in Tactics 1 it was never explained why bosses never got jailed, even for red card infraction, whereas in 2 its explained that only those who choose to abide by the laws can get punished by it, and as such only those who follow the laws get the benefits: Which in the game is the boost, the immortality and the Bonus Items if you don't break the law. Felt like it made more sense.

They did explain it. The bosses had special ribbons to turn red cards yellow.

That's what they did explain. The boss automatically didn't get red cards, and that includes a two yellow card trade in.

Actually I tried that. Snowballs have a base damage of 1-1 damage overall, so even with humoungus strength you still only do a measly 1 damage.

Actually I tried that. Snowballs have a base damage of 1-1 damage overall, so even with humoungus strength you still only do a measly 1 damage.

Somehow, the one was unaffected, but the the other fell over. He wasn't dead, but he didn't look comfortable. I tried to attack the other Bangaa, but he ran away.

Ichbod, another Soldier, wanted to be a Ninja. He explained that the clans work, people can choose 'jobs'. Only certain races can access certain jobs. He also explained that certain jobs can only be used once you've been certain other jobs. Ninjas need to have been Thieves.

Grandi the Bangaa didn't really seem to know what he wanted to be, but he'd heard good things about the Dragoon, which required experience as a Warrior.

Nobel used to be the White Mage. He further explained jobs. He said that certain abilities are learned through equipment, and take time to learn. Once they're learned, the equipment can be changed and the abilities can still be used, but any person can only use two different types of abilities at once, including items. He said that this is why he wanted to be an Alchemist, which could use Items AND two different abilities. He explained that he also wanted to be a Sage, and that being those three would require experience as a White Mage, and Black Mage, and a Beastmaster. He said he'd be a Black Mage for now.

Maude, the Viera, used to be an archer. She said she wanted to be a Summoner, which needed Fencer abilities. She also told me that it's learned abilities that unlock new jobs. She told me that she'd also need White Mage abilities, and Red Mage abilities, which required White Mage abilities, and Elementalist abilities, which need Red Mage abilities. It seem really complicated.

One of the monsters had neared us, but stopped short. I guess that it used up its 'move'. Before anything else could happen, the Bangaa ran up and slashed her across the face with his sword.

I didn't know what else to do, so I just cast a healing spell. I asked Montblanc why he wanted to be an Animist specifically, and he said he got some pretty cool spells, and told me to watch.

Actually I was imagining it would be something along the lines of the Paint version of Watchmen (http://asylums.insanejournal.com/scans_daily/65358.html)...though on looking that over, it's a little more complex than I remember it--especially that Mars bit. But you get the idea. No expectations, just little doodles :p

[The Dark Fiddler]

Ok, I've decided that since this LP is trying to be serious, instead of ugly as hell MSPaint sketches, non-plot crap will either be skipped or covered in text form before the LP proper.


I was pretty upset by the sight of all the killing yesterday... it gave me nightmares... I confronted Montblanc about it...

That... made a lot of sense to me... suddenly, I thought that this clan thing wasn't so bad. During the next few days, we took a couple of missions. One of them was putting out a fire in town, but when we got there, there wasn't any fire... but there were some "Bombs", monsters MADE of fire. I don't know how that even works, but we killed them all and saved the town. That made me happy. The next day, we went to a mountain called Lutia Pass, and we were protecting a few kids from monsters. One of them knocked out Maude, the Viera, and we all ganged up on it for revenge, even me. We brought her back after that by using an item called Phoenix Down.

After that was over, a few people changed jobs. Maude became a Red Mage, and Nobel became a Beastmaster. We needed to buy a bit of new equipment, but other than that, not much changed. We went on a few more missions, one was protecting a professor from Zombies and some weird jelly things. I was happy that I could help, because my Cure spells hurt the Zombies. Nobel walked up to one of the jelly things, and played a bit of music. Next thing I know, it's fighting for us! That Beastmaster job seems really useful, but Nobel said he was only using it to get to his dream jobs.

Next, we got called out to fight this mage who was causing trouble for people trying to get through the mountains. He had a lot of monsters with him, but the fight was over pretty quickly. After that we went after a wanted fugitive, an Alchemist. Nobel seemed a bit hesitant to take him in, but I'm sure its nothing. After that mission, Montblanc changed jobs to be a thief. He said that he had learned everything he could as an Animist until the stores were willing to sell us more stuff.

Our next mission was reclaiming a book from some thieves...

And like that, we were surrounded. I wasn't ready for this battle, these weren't monsters, they were sentient beings. I wasn't so sure I could help, but I did my best to not look away.

Because the only clan member the other team had that wasn't a physical attacker was their White Mage, I cast a physical protection spell on us.

After the last bandit fell, I looked around. I noticed that nobody was actually dead, just unconscious. This made everything a bit more bearable...

That made me really happy. That night, we had a small party. The alcohol wasn't any better, but it was already bought, so I had some. I had another hangover, of course, but it wasn't as bad as before, thankfully.


Sorry it took so long, I've been so busy with my concert coming up, but we were awesome, so its worth it. I'm off to go dig out my homebrew notes and see if I can't get any help balancing them.
