“For the Phoenix, when its time to die comes, lays two eggs; one black, one white. From the white egg hatches the Phoenix-bird itself when its time has come, but what hatches from the black egg, no one knows.”

It is a fairly well-known fact that PhoenixesMM2 immolate themselves in flame to give birth to new phoenixes. What is not so commonly known is that their fire is both one of birth and death. For while the flames spawn a new phoenix, they also kill its twin, an ugly, short-lived creature which is the physical manifestation of the immolating phoenix’s sins. Most of the time, these sin-phoenixes are reduced to ashes in a matter of seconds. Some, however, prove so full of hate and bile that they can literally rip a hole between life and death, coming back as a Lament Raven. Lament Ravens are twisted shadows of phoenixes, whose only goal in life is to become one of their better kin–a goal they will achieve through any means. Lament Ravens are massive birds, looking like black-feathered phoenixes, made of incorporeal shadow.

Death Rattle (Su)
Once each minute, a Lament Raven may make a hideous rattling sound. All creatures within 30 ft. of it must make a DC 25 Will save or become cursed, as the bestow curse spell, caster level 16th. This is a sonic ability. The save is Charisma based.

Steal Rebirth (Su)
Whenever a Phoenix uses its immolation ability within 100 ft. of a Lament Raven, it must make a DC 23 Will save. The save is Charisma based. If it succeeds, the ability functions normally, but if it fails, the immolation kills it, destroying its body totally, and it is not reborn. The Lament Raven, on the other hand, is permanently transformed into a completely average Phoenix. The only racial abilities it retains are its death rattle and summon ravens abilities. Its alignment remains unchanged.

Summon Ravens (Sp)
As a swift action, a Lament Raven may summon 1d6 ravens to serve it. The ravens serve for 10 rounds, and then return from whence they came. A Lament Raven may never have more than a total of 15 summoned ravens. This is the equivalent of a 2nd level spell.

Chill Aura (Su)
Any creature attempting to cast a spell with the [Fire] descriptor within 100 ft. of a Lament Raven must make a Spellcraft check, DC 20 plus the spell’s level, or the spell fails. In addition, whenever fire damage is dealt to any creature within 100 ft. of a Lament Raven, including the raven itself, the damage is always the minimum amount possible. Cold damge, conversely, is always at the maximum amount possible.

Might want to specify instaneous for the steal rebirth, lest people try dispelling it or something.
