So I was thinking about making a character specialising in creating grafts and according to the create graft feat in order to make Fiendish grafts you have to be a fiend. It doesn't define what a fiend is but judging by the prereqs for the fiend of corruption, possession, and blasphemy PrCs its any outsider with the evil subtype. So is that what defines a fiend? And if so could a Tiefling be considered a fiend?

Alternatively I was looking at the Kaorti and was wondering if it would be balanced to reduce their LA to +1 if I ditched the SLA since I don't want to have SLA's.

... Once more, my powers of darkness are called on again. A 'fiend', sometimes classically referred to as 'demons' in 3rd party products (because, as Mongoose Publishing has pointed out, most mortals can't tell the difference, and, meta-gaming, 'fiendology' just sounds stupid as opposed to 'demonology') are, as you pointed out, evil Outsiders. However, not all evil Outsiders get to count; generally, Fiend refers to devils, daemons, demons, or demodands. Fiends are living embodiments of their home-plane or ideal. It is entirely within reason for your tiefling to count as a fiend, although strength of the bloodline is in argument, I suppose.

Tieflings are the mortal decendants of fiends. They are not "true" fiends, as such. You might be okay with a Half-Fiend, though.

I'm not positive, but I think "Outsider with the Evil subtype" is the minimum- such a creature is immune to redemption by Diplomacy or Sanctify and to be redeemed generally requires DM's discretion.

The Fiend of Blasphemy, Fiend of Corruption and Fiend of Possession prestige classes in Fiend Folio all require an Outsider with the Evil subtype.

(note that non-evil fiends do exist, they are just rare and there are no easy ways for players to turn an evil fiend into a non-evil one- maybe Wish)

The easiest way to become a Fiend is the Unholy Scion template from Heroes of Herror. It does come with a hefty LA, though.

A Tiefling is a Native Outsider, so it does not count as a fiend. It does count as a planetouched, though.

Rakshasa are native outsiders, but I'd still consider them fiends. I wouldn't consider any less-than-half breeds as fiends, though.
The "outsiders that begin with a d" rule is probably the easiest to abide by.

Ignoring the "fiend" line of questioning, look in Lords of Madness. There you will find a PrC that specializes in creating grafts. I believe it allows you to create grafts even if you aren't the "right Type."

The game has a very good definition of Fiend, though: Outsiders with the Evil subtype. It never says anything about Native subtype.

Unless I can get access to that online its not gonna happen....
