I don't get this. Redcloak has been trying for months to find out how Girards Gate is protected. Why not try Kraggor's? He should know (at least generally) about how it's protected because he has Serini's diary. Not to mention it's something that Xykon can deal with easier; he's able to fight a lot better than he can think.

IIRC Kraagor's gate is across the sea, on the polar icecap, and therefore they can't bring their army.

No, Girard's Gate is the one across the sea. The northern regions are on the mainland.

What's standing between Xykon/Redcloak and Kraagor's gate is the presence of eight human nations.

Who needs an army? Kraagor's gate is full of monsters, the MitD and Xykon + Redcloak team could breeze right through it. Personally I think it would be faster flying there than Team Evil trying to get through epic level illusions.

As noted, since they failed to control Soon's gate, and they now have in their possession a port city, presumably with a few ships, it's a lot easier to go to Girard's gate than back through the eight human nations standing between them and Kraagor's gate. (Since it appears to be landlocked)

Because Girard's gate is easier to travel to than Kraggor's gate. As Redcloak says in comic 300 (http://www.giantitp.com/comics/oots0300.html).
The first gate choice is "located across the ocean." Now look at comic 331 (http://www.giantitp.com/comics/oots0331.html), second page, second panel. Roy says "Girard's gate, on the western continent..." (thus across the ocean from Azure City)
In 300, team evil's second choice is "far to the north. Through eight human nations." In 331, Roy also says in that same panel as Girard's gate, "or Kraggor's gate, near the northern polar cap.
In short, all team evil needs to do is fly or sail to Girard's gate. For Kraggor's gate, they would have to conquer eight nations. Girard's gate is faster and less difficult to get to. Though capturing it is totally different.

The reasoning is here (http://www.giantitp.com/comics/oots0300.html).

They went after Soon's Gate because Girard's would require going across the ocean, and Kraagor's would require going through eight human nations. Now, with all the slaves Azure City provides, they can get all the ships they need, and Girard's is closer.

:xykon:: Redcloak, we're literally out to conquer the world here. In what way is conquering eight parts of that world not worth our time?
:redcloak:: When we can get the same goal accomplished by only conquering one part of it.

Yes, they could just sail around (though it's a longer trip), and Redcloak's real motivation for going after Soon's Gate was revenge against the Sapphire Guard and the ability to set up a goblin state, but in my view, there's no compelling reason for Team Evil to go to Kraagor's over Girard's - and there's zero compelling evidence that Serini didn't cut her diary short before giving too much more away about her own gate than she did the others (a very good idea). Remember, Xykon has an inaccurate view of what happened after the rifts were sealed (http://www.giantitp.com/comics/oots0196.html): "Each built a secret stronghold atop one of the five gates, while the sixth...recorded the locations in code in her diary." I don't think there's any evidence Serini hinted that she even had anything to do with Kraagor's Gate.

(Which sounds like a good jumping off point for speculation itself... what will happen when Team Evil goes to Kraagor's Gate?)

Also, even if Redcloak does know more about Kraagor's Gate, he has ulterior motives (http://www.giantitp.com/comics/oots0548.html) to drag it out for months, and if he still goes to Girard's after that he probably figures there's a very, very good reason not to go to Kraagor's.
