So I saw this (http://www.thehuntforgollum.com/updates.htm) on Slashdot. It's an entirely fan-made film set in Middle Earth, and will be released for free Sunday. There's a trailer here (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FnMHgwG9aAo). Is anyone else aware/excited? Optimistic? Not?

Personally, I'm optimistic. The story seems interesting; the visual style seems perfect. I'm half expecting whatever visual effects they use for Gollum to be disappointing, though, particularly since they avoid showing any clear shots of him... Still, that's not the most important thing.

Yeah I saw that.

It looked really well done. Hope it don't suck.

I first found this via the BBC (http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/entertainment/8022623.stm), which has a little Q&A with the producers as well. I was surprised, looking at the trailer, how much they'd been able to accomplish on just £3000. As for filming, I always thought if they hadn't been able to film it in New Zealand they could have done it in Britain or Ireland so this should look generally a lot like Peter Jackson's Middle-earth. We already know the story from Appendix B, and since this is a serious fan film you can count on it being faithful to that.

Either way, I'll watch this on Monday.

Saw the trailers about five minutes ago and I was commenting the film with a friend before coming to the Media Discussions forum.

It looks promising, the costumes are really good and the actors seem to know what they're doing. I'm definetely going to watch this when it comes out. On Sunday.

I just watched this, and they did a very good job capturing the feel of the pro films.

The material was a bit thin on story, but that's hard to help given that it's background filler to a larger story.

I think this really shows what's possible these days with an "amateur" production, and I hope this team gets more chances to show what they can do.

You can really see the 5000$ budget and that they were all amateurs.

It was.....nice, I suppose.

I'd rather have it done professionaly.

Not to mention that the books >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> the movies.
