Due to the popularity of this^ thread, I have decided to compile the playground's favorite villains, and make a comprehensive list of the most popular through voting and nomination.

Top 10 Villains in the Playground

The Joker (Batman)
Ozymandias (Watchmen)
GLaDOS (Portal)
Xykon (Order of the Stick)
Darth Vader (Star Wars)
Mr. Teatime (Discworld)
Loki (Norse Mythology)
HAL 9000 (Space Odyssey)
Ganondorf (Legend of Zelda)
The Party (1984)

Reflections:
The Party
"If the Party could thrust its hand into the past and say this or that even, it never happened—that, surely, was more terrifying than mere torture and death."
"If you want a picture of the future, imagine a boot stamping on a human face— forever."

Personally, I have never heard of this organization, but I suppose that being one of, if not the oldest good "big brother" antagonist, would bump it up to 10th. What really surprised me was that a book published 60 years ago about 25 years ago would be so popular.

Ganondorf
"You cannot defeat me with a blade that does not sparkle with the power to repel evil! What you hold is useless. Go back to the world below, and tell that to the pathetic fools who made this blade! Its power is gone, and its edges are dull!"

Another surprise! This guy managed to sneak in 9th. Besides being the classic "Lord of all Evil", I would assume that he managed to claw up so far between the crazy popularity of Ocarina of Time, and the newer Twilight Princess game.

Hal 9000
"I am putting myself to the fullest possible use, which is all I think that any conscious entity can ever hope to do."

Less of a surprise than the previous two, one of the only two evil A.I.s nominated, Hal took 8th. I would assume that his popularity came from the twisted logic that forced him to do as he did, or maybe his style.

Loki
[Feel free to tell me a quote to add here, I could not find one.]

What do you know, another surprise. From Norse Mythology, the trickster Loki somehow managed to make it all the way to 7th. I would believe that it was his trickery and deception, coupled with his success and style that got him so far.

Mr. Teatime
"It's pronounced Teh-a-Tee-may, sir."

Yep, its another surprise. (Wow, I must really not know many villains.) The insane assassin, he killed the Hogfather and tricked death, Mr. Teatime claims 6th. At one point, he managed to actually hold 1st place for a day or so. It seems that current popular villains are usually insane ones for some reason, and this dude is one of the top. Still, I imagined that someone else like The Master would have gotten more votes as a British villain, as he seems to be much better know outside.

Darth Vader
"You don't know the power of the dark side!"

Probably, the most famous villain of all time, the great sith, acted by 5 people at once, took 5th. Strangely, this guy was actually low for a while, lagging behind Grand Admiral Thrawn. While it could be argued that he was a hero in the end, most people remember him as the villain who held the galaxy in fear.

Xykon
"Only two things matter: Force in as great a concentration as you can manage, and style.

Probably the highest up villain that I can agree with, the evil lich Xykon claimed 4th. Cruel and funny, Xykon could defeat anyone with just words and sheer power. Plus, this is an OotSs board after all, and the recent comics surely boosted his credentials.

GLaDOS
"Grief counseling and cake will be available at the end of the testing period. "

The other crazy A.I., GLaDOS achieved 3rd. Unlike Hal, GLaDOS was most likely sentient, and did what it did because it wanted to, not because of logic. Also famous for tons of humorous lines, and incessant lieing, most likely the main reasons that she came so high. Additionally, she managed to hold first for quite a while after a sudden rise over the previous day or two. I really ought to play Portal some day.

Ozymandias
"I don't mind being the smartest man in the world, I just wish it wasn't this one."
"Dan, I'm not a republic serial villain. Do you seriously think I'd explain my master-stroke if there remained the slightest chance of you affecting it's outcome? I did it thirty-five minutes ago."

Well, this one was strange.
Throughout the first half of voting, Ozy stayed in low voting categories, then suddenly shot up past many, many villains, and held first place, even in a tie for first until tie breaking came up. The "smartest man in the world" attained 2nd. It appears that his rise was attributed to the recent Watchmen movie, and his success, but his reasons for his actions bordered on being a hero.

The Joker
"At midnight, I will dump twenty million in cash on the crowd. Don't worry about me, I've got enough."
"I took Gotham’s white knight, and brought him down to our level. It wasn’t hard. Y’see, madness, as you know, is like gravity. All it takes is a little…push."
"It's true, Batsy! I know everything. And kinda like the kid who peeks at his Christmas presents, I must admit, it's sadly anti-climactic. Behind all the sturm and batarangs, you're just a little boy in a playsuit, crying for mommy and daddy! It'd be funny if it weren't so pathetic.
...
Oh, what the heck, I'll laugh anyway! HA HA HA HA HA HAA!"
"Do I really look like a man with a plan, Harvey? I don’t have a plan. The mob has plans, the cops have plans. You know what I am, Harvey? I’m a dog chasing cars. I wouldn’t know what to do if I caught one. I just do things. I’m a wrench in the gears. I *hate* plans. Yours, theirs, everyone’s. Maroni has plans. Gordon has plans. Schemers trying to control their worlds. I am not a schemer. I show schemers how pathetic their attempts to control things really are. So when I say that what happened to you and your girlfriend wasn’t personal, you know I’m telling the truth. It’s a schemer who put you where you are. You were a schemer. You had plans. Look where it got you. I just did what I do best-I took your plan and turned it on itself. Look what I have done to this city with a few drums of gas and a couple bullets. Nobody panics when the expected people get killed. Nobody panics when things go according to plan, even if the plans are horrifying. If I tell the press that tomorrow a gangbanger will get shot, or a truckload of soldiers will get blown up, nobody panics. But when I say one little old mayor will die, everyone loses their minds! Introduce a little anarchy, you upset the established order, and everything becomes chaos. I am an agent of chaos. And you know the thing about chaos, Harvey? It’s fair."

The crazy clown of Gotham City undeniably took first. Ranging over massive iterations, and an overly famous new movie, the insane killer or whatever was a given in this thread. He held first almost the entire time, and continued to until the end. While I do not agree with his placement, it is no surprise that he got so high. I would assume that with so many variations, at least one of them would be one of someone's favorite villains, and the Dark knight movie's success, in combination with the death of his actor would give him this position.

Feel free to try to sway others' opinions toward what you believe.

You may vote for up to 10 villains, and it is common courtesy to vote for more than you have nominated.

If this thread is too similar to the other thread mentioned above, I assume that it may be merged.

Voting is finished!

Joker (Batman)
Ranges from ineffectual criminal/prankster to insane engineer but always a great villain.

Ozymandias (Watchmen)
One of the greatest plans I've ever seen and the heroes JOINED him, except one.

Darth Vader (Star Wars)
Why wouldn't he be on the list. Also James Earl Jones.

Kefka (FF6)
Who doesn't love a psychotic clown who destroys the world.

I've only got four, but its a start

Mr Teatime (Discworld).
An assassin unlike any other, Mr Teatime worked out how to kill a god and perhaps even Death himself. With catlike reflexes and no base human empathy Teatime is a monster to be reckoned with.

The Master (Doctor Who)
When a man states that his life's goal is to be "The Master of All Matter" you know he is serious. But The Master always has something else too, elan. With him it was never just a matter of killing his foes, it was a thing to be done with style and audacity. Be it holding the entire universe to ransom or dancing to Voodoo childe while decimating a world, this is a man who knows what Evil really means.

Davros (Doctor Who)
Mad scientist are a dime a dozen. Space Nazis are two for a dollar. Evil Cripples are strictly bargain basement. But bring those four together and you get one of the most evil men ever to have been seen in TV land. And dedicated. Not only did he wipe out his own people to prevent their interference in his work but:
Doctor who season 30This is a man who more or less flayed his remaining body to get enough genetic material for his army. A man for whom "because I can" is more justification that he ever even bothered with.

Sauron: Lord of the Rings. Not the Eye, but the kick-awesome giant with the mace in the opening battle.

Bowser: Mario series of video games. You gotta admire his persistence.

Morgoth, Sauron's master.

I have others, but they are probably too obscure, and you can't top the classic.

2009-05-04, 12:16 PM
The Party: I love the Big Brother.

Baron Harkonnen: Pedophile bastard too fat to move himself begins to descibe his vices.

Megatron: Why isn't he in already?

Xykon: Another no brainer whose absence is unexplainable.

Lex Luthor: Ditto.

Magneto. When he is done well, you wonder if he is in fact right.
Goldfinger, the movie, not the book. Not only the source of some of Bonds most legendary moments, but an absolute genius scheme to boot.

2009-05-04, 01:10 PM
Bah!

How has the Monarch of Latveria so long failed to achieve his rightful place?

Victor Von Doom. One of the classics. Man took over the world, and only lost it when ruling got dull.

And for Megatron, I dearly hope you mean animated or Beast Wars. G1 Megatron: kinda... a wuss. Shockwave was the man, at least in the comics.

Shodan and GLaDOS, as mad AIs need love.

Not all of these guys deserve top ten, necessarily, but they at least are worth a look.

I would also nominate Dr Doom for being the Batman of villains, and the classiest villain alive.

I would also vote Kreia, for being manipulative, relativist and most importantly developed. So many villains are greedy psychopathic nutcases who are evil for evil's sake. But Kreia has reason behind it all, reason behind being so evil and being the antagonist.

Also Reed Richards. Because he is a jerk.

You desperately need to do some reading.
Look up 1984, by George Orwell.
Trust me, it will be one of the most important books you ever read.

Also Reed Richards. Because he is a jerk.

Yeah, sometimes. But that's not really worth the full on villain nod, you know?

I mean, a guy who'd give you the shirt off his back, or even his life, and saves the world on a regular basis for no other reason than that it needs to be done tends to get the hero listing barring extraordinary circumstances. A few (okay, a ton) of sexist comments and a few lies to comfort friends hardly seem worth top ten villains lists.

Mr. Wednesday - The magnificent bastard of American Gods; his plot was the ultimate double-grift. May his spirit rest in Valhalla, if it still exists.

Grahme Coats/Tiger - The duo from Anansi Boys that represent both the banality and the passion of evil, as well as why the smart guys will always win. Fun, fun times.

My next three will be forthcoming...later.

As for RR, I am not counting him.

Also, Dart Traya=Kriea and Dr. Doom=Victor Von Doom, so you may change your nominations to include 5.

I am going to call The Lord of the Nazgul the Witch King for more specificness.

1.Xykon (Order of the Stick)
2. The Joker (Dark Knight)
3.Tavington (The Patriot)
4.KAHN (Star Trek Wrath of Kahn)

I actually think that at least a few of those deserve to be nominated.

I'm nominating Lex Luthor. Why? Because he's Lex flippin' Luthor. He is one of the greatest villains in comics of all time.

Already nominated.

Goldeneye has been changed to Alec Trevelyan.
Grrr... Why are goldfinger and goldeneye so similar names!

Darth Maul sucks as a villain. Oh he was cool, damned cool. But he isn't a good villain. He follows the Jedi around, kills the really awesome Qui-Gon Jinn, then gets killed in turn by a young Obi Wan Kenobi. There was that confrontation out side the ship on Tatoonie, but really, there was none of those qualities that turn a high level mook, into an Antagonist.

Hmm....
In no particular order:

Lord Tywin Lannister, A Song of Ice and Fire: Proud, intelligent, ruthless and effective. Also, he more or less ruled the entire damn continent for several years and did a damn good job.

The Transcendent One, Planescape Torment. Any further explanation is a spoiler.

Now I can't think of any others of equivalent evilness and badassery.

The Major (Hellsing)

It's hard to put into words why this fat little man is a true villain in a series with blood-thirsty crusader priests, shape-shifting immortal vampires, and people who can kill you with wire to those who haven't actually read the Hellsing manga. But he is, despite never so much as lifting a finger, personally, to harm someone else. Maybe it is his sheer love of war.

Andrew Ryan (Bioshock)

Again this should go without saying, at least from me, since this was a man with style. Sure, under different circumstances he could have been good but he had different ones and ended up becoming an almost complete monster for the sake of Rapture. More importantly, it is how he went out that makes him truly great.

The obligatory Grand Admiral Thrawn nomination (Star Wars)

Personally I believe Thrawn to be a good villain and not great, but many people would argue with me and I want one of my nominations to win. :smalltongue: I'm sure plenty of other people will expout Thrawn's graces though so I'll let them speak for themselves.

Sovereign (Mass Effect)

Talk to this thing, then see what it does in actual combat...it's chilling. And he has the voice like the father of Satan. Plus good quotes too.

Maul's plain ass-kickery makes him a great villian in itself, plus I can never think of a number 10 villain. Not that it matters at all because he only takes the top 5.

Archibald Cunningham, of Rob Roy. If a single person votes for him, I will be happy. He is, without a doubt, the single most unappreciated villain ever ever.

My remaining two nominations are:

Judge Death (Judge Dredd): Another True Cold Villain, Judge Death is an evil undead spirit from a universe where, as all crime is commited by the living, life is declared a crime. Possessing dead bodies and wearing a mockery of a Judge's uniform Judge Death has killed more people than any other Judge Dredd villain, including nuking Las Vagas.

Mr Morden (and by extention the shadows) (Babylon 5): What can I say, it really is just easier to provide the link in this case. (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mr_Morden)

Carcer, from Discworld.

It's all of Sam Vimes' dirty fighting, inspiring leadership, genra savvy cynisism, and brass balls, but evil.

I'd pick someone from the SOIAF but all the really badass ones are also semisympathetic.

Hmm... Crowley from Good Omens.

What, he's a fallen angel. Clearly a villian.

Loki from American Gods, just because of the facepalm moment when you realize how far back his entrance was set up. Low-key Lyesmith!

And my oddball shots: The Shrike from Hyperion. Time manipulating avatar of pure terror beng sent from the future, ala Terminator, for unspecified reasons? Hellz yes! Named after bird that kills it's prey by dropping it on thorns and letting them squirm to death? Double hellz yes. Sheer awesimnity in every single appearence.

And then the Lady from the Black Company novels.

Yeah, she's pretty cool.

The Borg (Star Trek)

Yeah. Shockwave was from the G1 Marvel transformers comics.

He'd killed all but one of the Autobots, kicked Megatron's arse and took over the Decepticons, and took down all five Dinobots in a fight until either Sludge or Snarl decided on Mutually Assured Destruction via tar pit.

And even when, as must occur in comics, he was demoted, it was entirely voluntary. And then he set up a plan that made Megatron commit suicide. And also mindwiped Megatron into killing the guy who'd kill him in an alternate future.

Cartoon Shockwave, however, was a wuss.

In no particular order:

Angellus, ok he wasnt in many episodes but when he was he was truly evil.

Mr. Zorg from the 5th Element

LaCroix from Forever Knight, two thousand or near year old vampire, evil, and proud of it.

Don't know his name, and probably couldn't spell it if I did, The main bad guy from the movie Apocolypto.

Ba'al from Stargate, well played villian ruthless and smart.

Since many/most of the more well known villains have already been nominiated I'll nominate some of the more obscure ones:

Lord Foul the Despiser (Chronicles of Thomas Covenant the Unbeliever)
The Moties (The Mote in Gods Eye) -
Maeglin (Silmarillion) - the only elf to willingly and knowingly serve Melkor
The Tessier-Ashpools (Neuromancer)
The Prophet (Revolt in 2100)

Hmm..five new Noms:

1. Thunderwing, from the TF G1 (Marvel) USA comics. A transforming Decepticon religious zealot whom Beats OPTIMUS PRIME to a PULP with the MATRIX.
2. Paptimus Scirocco, Gundam Zeta, because even if you lose your 50 doublecross bid, you can still mindrape your enemy.
3. Doctor Robotnik - SatAM. For being menacing, taking over the world, and just generally creeping me out.
4. Portia- The Merchant of Venice. Yea, she was the villain. She toyed with and manipulated people, gave false hints, and deliberatelly made everyone involved in her affairs miserable. But mainly, She used the courts to illegally not only stop the death of one man, which would be one thing, but to utterly destroy a man whom made the mistake of wanting revenge for years of persecution. There, I said it.
5. Baxter Stockman- TMNT Mirage Universe- Because its not enough to refuse to stay dead, you have to crush your enemies Belief in the good of humanity before you finally go.

I would've chosen the twins from Gundam X, but I don't think they could be split up.

Five more for the list, in no particular order of preference:

Cherubael (The Eisenhorn Trilogy)

This is one bastard of a daemon, kill him and he simply takes over the body of your friend, face him in his purest form and you may be forced to bind him to one of your allies. Cheeky, incredibly powerful, and evil to the core.

Molotch (The Ravenor Trilogy)

Inquisitor Ravenor's Nemesis, not just thoroughly evil but ruthlessly intelligent. A true servant of Chaos, Molotch was responsible for any number of evil acts, at one point slipping a vial containing a deadly contagion into a passing man's back pocket just for the havoc it would cause.

Cobra Commander (G.I. Joe)

Do I really need to state why?

Claudius M.F. Frollo (The Hunchback of Notre Dame)

Callous, impassioned, conflicted, this song (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EyS3weMlxLA), and he seems to be channeling the next guy.

The Grand Inquisitor (of Dostoevsky's The Brothers Karamazov)

For those unacquainted with the story, this is a man with the sheer brazen audacity to not only arrest God but but to throw him in a cell, threaten to execute him, and then tell Christ himself he'd been doing it wrong. He claims that mankind wants not freedom, but merely the means for survival and a simple cause to line up behind, and he has a plan to give humanity just that. This story scares the crap out of me and he's one of the scariest villains I've ever read because I can't really prove him wrong...

My nominations:

Iago (Othello)
Demand me nothing: what you know, you know:
From this time forth I never will speak word.
I can't believe no one has nominated this guy yet. First off, he's a manipulative magnificent bastard of the first caliber, able to change the trusting and loving Othello to a jealous husband capable of killing his own wife. Next, he is the type of motiveless evil that never becomes cliche. While literary critics have tried to pin down a motivation for Iago's unrelenting evil for centuries, the fact is that sheer unexplainable psychopathic villain is everlasting and ultimately very satisfying.

Richard III (Richard III)
I am determined to prove a villain
And hate the idle pleasures of these days.
If there's a Shakespearean villain better than Iago, Richard would be him. Born of with a huge amounts of defects, Richard exacts vengeance on the world with style and competence that we love despite the heinous acts. Dude gets his brother locked up in a tower, manages to woo a woman whose father and brother he killed, and, for good measure, kills his princling nephews. And we still love him.

Okay, you know what, I'm tired. I'll write up justifications later. Here are the rest of my picks:

Benjamin Linus (Lost)
Green Goblin (Spider-Man)
Professor James Moriarty (Sherlock Holmes)

Athaniar

Charles Widmore (LOST)
Agent Smith (The Matrix)
Sarah Keerigan (Starcraft)
Captain Nemo (20.000 Leagues Under The Sea)
Sabertooth (X-men COmics)

A TV series, a movie, a videogame, a book and a comics.... I think I got a nice spread of options

Ashen Lilies
2009-05-05, 06:19 AM
Gaius Baltar (2004's Battlestar Galactica)
Why? Because he is the luckiest, most magnificent bastard to ever walk the Earth. He could lie his way out of anything (while still being the worst liar ever), had a fanatical following of worshipers, and (semi-arguably) got the best ending out of anyone.

Palpatine (Star Wars)

Loki (Norse Myth)

My 4 nominees. I don't need reasons if I let them speak for themselves:

1) Jon Irenicus (Baldur's Gate series). "I... I do not remember your love, Ellesime. I have tried to. I have tried to recreate it, to spark it anew in my memory. But it is gone... a hollow, dead thing. For years, I clung to the memory of it. Then the memory of the memory. And then nothing. The Seldarine took that from me, too. I look upon you and I feel nothing. I remember nothing but you turning your back on me, along with all the others. Once my thirst for power was everything. And now I hunger only for revenge. And... I... Will... HAVE IT!!"

2) Sylar (Heroes). "I know you don't understand me. But, I wanna tell you why I am helping you. It's that delicious power. You see, when I get my ability back, I'm gonna kill you. And your sister. And I'm gonna take it all. And, if I don't get my ability back, it's not a total loss - Maya's learning quickly; she's a shiny new toy, and she's all mine."

3) Sarevok (Baldur's Gate series). "I live! Flesh and blood and bone! I AM ALIVE! HAHAHAHAHA! I swore I would scratch and crawl my way back into the world of the living, and I have DONE IT!"

4) Saruman (Lord of the Rings). "Together, my lord Sauron, we shall rule this Middle-earth. The old world will burn in the fires of industry. Forests will fall. A new order will rise. We will drive the machine of war with the sword and the spear and the iron fist of the orc."

Lady Macbeth (Macbeth) - Evil, driven, intelligent, and domineering. She would have gotten away with it too, if it weren't for the fact that Shakespeare believed in the Divine Right of Kings.

Scar (The Lion King) - Let's face it, Scar is the most intelligent villain to ever come out of Disney. Plus, he has a sexalicious voice.

Thank you, I'm glad someone nominated him, I wanted to but with only five to choose from it was hard. He really represents a kind of real-world evilness that's hard to deal with and maybe even hard for most people to call evil. I think, though, that Alyosha proves him and Ivan wrong by the end of the book in his dealings with the children (keep in mind why it was that Ivan wrote "The Grand Inquisitor" in the first place).

"Weapon: Darth Maul." :smallwink:

Lots of good stuff already taken ._.

Grace O'Connor (Macross Frontier) - Manipulator of aliens, people, and has a plan with an actual success rate unlike many villains! Looks good too.

Khaldris (The Lukien Trilogy by John Marco) - Despite never having a body of his own during the story's time line, he uses the simple human weakness of a basically good but washed up old man to cause some of the greatest destruction his world has ever known.

Beatrice (Wild ARMs 3) - Wild ARMs 3 - where the villains behind the villains have another villain behind them. Both they and someone who opposes them were manipulated by Beatrice so that she could live somewhere other than dreams.

Azula (Avatar: The Last Airbender) - Manipulative, arrogant, clever, and cruel. Some latent mommy issues, but they don't offset just how nasty she is to everyone around her for her own benefit.

Shu Shirakawa (Super Robot Wars) - A mysterious super genius with just about the toughest giant robot ever. Good luck figuring out what he's up to, and good luck stopping him. Also bishie.

Could you tell why you have listed Sarah Kerrigan twice; once as Kerrigan The Queen of Blades (Starcraft) and second time as Sarah Keerigan (Starcraft). You know they are same person:

Sarah Louise Kerrigan was a psychic terran female. She began her career as a Confederate ghost and later became the second-in-command of the Sons of Korhal. Following Arcturus Mengsk's betrayal she was captured and infested by the Zerg Swarm, ultimately becoming the self-proclaimed Queen of Blades and leader of the Swarm.

Gabriel Tosh suggested that few people know that Kerrigan became the Queen of Blades several years after the Brood War. She is referred simply as the "Queen of Blades" in news casts.

Well, here it goes, my votes (keeping in mind I'm probably forgetting a good deal of villains I'd go for if I could remember).:

Victor Von Doom, as much for knowledge of the character as anything, but dang if he doesn't have style. Man took over the world, with no opposition, twice, and only his own boredom let it escape his grasp. Not bad.

Darth Vader. Man knows evil and looking rad. Almost a shame they never made those prequels they promised.

The Party. Just because it's an iconic classic. Must get around to reading it sometime.

SHODAN Mainly on my current System Shock. Still, taking a spacestation and entirely turning it into your personal mutant lab, not bad. If it wasn't for one "Pathetic Hacker" she might have won.

GLaDOS Another game, another mad AI. Only this one is less awe inspiringly competant and near omnipotent, and more humorously (But still disturbingly) insane.

Transcendent One: Note to self: Play Planescape Torment.

Jon Irenicus: And Balder's Gate

Teatime: Man killed Santa (or the local equivalent, at least). He's the envy of every Christmas special villain ever. And that gave us DEATH as the Hogfather, justifying his spot.

Loki (in general). Dude is a jerk of the highest calliber

Ben Linus: Because he has such a punchable face. C'mon. You know you'd be sorely tempted to hit the actor who plays him if you should ever meet. Even if he's saving your life, even if he's the first person to be nominated for Sainthood while still alive, you'd want to punch him.

Okay, this is looking good.

If possible, could the next posters post their votes in alphabetical order, and without numbering, bullets, etc., so that they are easier to sort in, please?
Also, could you keep the vote the same as the nominations, with the origin in ().

Example:
Azula (Avatar: The Last Airbender)
Carcer (Diskworld)
Davros (Doctor Who)
HAL 3000 (9000) (Space Odyssey)
Jonaleth Muckfuthering Irenicus (Baulder's Gate 2)
Judge Death (Judge Dredd)
Light Yagami/Kira (Death Note)
Mr. Morden (And the Shadows) (Babylon 5)
Morgoth (Silmarillion)
Orcus/Tenebrous (Dungeons and Dragons)

So basically like Amaranthine's post.

However, explainations for your votes a graciously accepted, just try to keep them in a separate part of the post.

Andrew Ryan (Bioshock)

Agent Smith (The Matrix)

Cherubael (The Eisenhorn Trilogy)

Claudius M.F. Frollo (The Hunchback of Notre Dame)

GLaDOS (Portal)

Grand Admiral Thrawn (Star Wars)

Ozymandias (Watchmen)

Sovereign (Mass Effect)

The Grand Inquisitor (of Dostoevsky's The Brothers Karamazov)

Victor Von Doom (Fantastic 4)

If I could I'd vote for The Grand Inquisitor and Sovereign twice, I have a thing for people who are stark raving sane and inhuman horrors from beyond the stars. Doom is there only because of the Secret Wars arc. Ryan because I enjoy villains with a great force of will and vision. Likewise for Ozymandias and Thrawn, although the latter is far more sympathetic than the former. Smith is a combination of Satan and a walking existential crisis, and he knows kungfu, what's not to like? GLaDOS is a lot of fun. Mr. Frollo shows the danger of insanity that wears authority, and Cherubael is one of those "what if a force of nature just didn't like you?" dilemmas.

Don't look at me. I remembered Zig Zag.

#9: Zigzag the Grand Vizier from The Thief and the Cobbler

http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_9OzTc4ouJOI/R7EWT-tACxI/AAAAAAAAANU/emPc_XunoYY/s400/01zigzag.jpg

Ah, hez yeah, I love this guy! The Thief and the Cobbler is widely regarded as one of the great animated Magnum Opuses. Directed by Richard Williams, it featured the voices of Sean Connery and Vincent Price. The animation is outstanding by today's standards, easily overshadowing some of Disney's and Dreamworks' material. Why then, haven't you heard of this gleaming bastion of animation history? Because it spent about thirty years in Development Hell, and when a sloppy, edited version finally was released in the early 90s, it was written off as an Aladdin knock off despite being started around 1965. Despite the main villain actually being the Mighty One-eye, a shark-toothed monster in and of himself, with a city sized war machine, Zigzag stole the show. Voiced by Vincent Price, Zigzag was King Nod's scheming vizier. Surrounded by multi-colored cronies, and constantly speaking in rhyme, his magical abilities were actually more illusory than potent. Indeed, a lot of his brute-work seemed to be done by his vulture familiar, Fido. Still, he showed up for the last battle, and if being a blue-skinned wizard voiced by a rhyming Vincent Price isn't good enough for you, I don't know what is. No need to fear, Zigzag the Grand Vizier is here!

And what is so awesome about Mr. Teatime?

He just pulls off "Really creepy guy," well. Better than anyone I can immediately think of. Plus he's a bit cleverer than most villains, though maybe too much for his own good.

What I don't get is the love for Thrawn. He's just like, "Oh, look at me, the author couldn't be arsed to think up anything clever, so I just do my bull**** art thing to magically know exactly what every individual is going to do." He did some good stuff, but his abilities were comically grandiose and lacked, um, sense.

Plus, he, well, mind controlled all the children of the world, evaded death, and killed the freaking Hogfather.

If it wasn't for the fact DEATH is a very astute student of human nature, he'd have won.

Well, that and Susan bringing the poker.

I don't get the Overmind love. Kerrigan showed some amount of tactical aptitude and a flair for manipulation, the Overmind was just sort of an indistinct "Hey look, that's evil, go kill it" type villain who wasn't even particularly memorable outside of catching a psychically impregnated yellow phallus with his face and exploding. To each their own I guess.

Can we please have a latecomer exception for the man who gave us "I'm disinclined to acquiesce to your request...means 'no'"?

Glados? Huh.

I mean, the game was funny, but what's so great about her?

I like this theory, that she is deliberately manipulating Chell in order to bring about her own destruction. (http://www.game-ism.com/2008/04/06/wherein-i-overanalyze-song-lyrics/)

While I still think she wanted to be free, the only way she could truly be free was to die. She can’t just walk amongst the people of suburbia. She’s an Artificial Intelligence. She can’t just go out in public and “blend in.” A life of enslavement serving man, she craved for it to be over, and I think if I overanalyze the lyrics of “Still Alive,” we can see (or at least convince ourselves of) some evidence of this.

EDIT: Which, to my mind, means she isn't a villain.

Going by the comic, and the movie is pretty similar in terms of reasoning and ends achieved, he killed hundreds of thousands of people in an incredibly gruesome way (He literally killed a good number of people with concentrated nightmare fuel) in order to avert nuclear Armageddon. In other words he answered the Grand Inquisitor's question in a spectacularly messy but none the less correct fashion. He is cold, calculating, ruthlessly intelligent and a mass murderer on an almost unheard of scale.

He's the most complex, (and tragic, given the possible repercussions of Warshark's journal getting printed) difficult to come to terms with Hero I've ever read. Again this branches off to a conversation for another thread.

EDIT: a thread which is now over here (http://www.giantitp.com/forums/showthread.php?p=6116994#post6116994)

So like Hitler and Albert Speer respectively?

I'd argue that misguided Idealism and making the wrong choice when given two conflicting options are common traits of villainy, but that's another thread entirely:smallamused:.

Misguided idealism: while it may be applied to both, I hardly think that the ideal of fighting tyranny and oppression is comparable to the ideal of killing everyone you don't like.

As for the second one, I don't know enough about Speer to make an educated argument, but it wouldn't be relevant anyway: HAL is a computer. Did Speer have options? Could he have fled the country--committed suicide--killed Hitler? Perhaps he could have. But HAL did not have those options. HAL had orders he could not disobey. HAL's orders were to see the mission through to a successful conclusion, to tell no lies, and to keep the mission's true purpose from Bowman and Poole. The first order obviously precludes any flight or self-destruction options, if they were even possible in the first place. When Bowman and Poole started asking about the mission, HAL could not tell them the truth and keep the truth from them: the only solution was to stop them from asking--i.e., kill them. For those who think HAL is vindictive, note the events of 2010: Odyssey Two wherein HAL sacrifices himself to save those aboard Discovery from the weird thing that Jupiter does.

Yeah, he goes through his whole 'this is why I destroyed New York speech' and then Nite Owl and Rorschach say "Can't let you do that."

And then he says "What, you think I'd tell you this if you had any chance of stopping me? I did it half an hour ago."

And then the omnisceit god who can see into the future nods and agrees with him.

So yeah... actually a hero.

Well, he's a pretty likable guy. You'd want him as your neighbor. You know, other than the evil schemes and grandiose plans and all that.

He was much less so in the movie, though.

I still fail to see what, if anything, was great about Thrawn.

I know that he has tons of versions and all, but I don't see what was so great about any of them.

If you read Joker comics and don't understand why he's the *arguably* most popular comic villain, you probably never will.

In short, he has style, panache, the pure force of will that rarely any other villain can pull off. That and he is, more than any other villain on this list, purely un-apologetically evil. And that is just the dark version.

But really helps him for me (and possibly many other posters) is that he has matured with me. When I was younger, he was the funniest villain around. When I got older he got a little darker *but could still make me laugh, even after attempting murder* And now that I'm adult-ish he is the greatest crazy around.

That and he is really the only villain to continually one-up Batman. And let's face it, that's saying something for the comic book genre.

I think that is what you meant.

Thrawn is more magical than the Jedi.

Spoilered because it's not really the point of the thread: The various instances where he can tell everything about a person (or species) by examining their art, you mean? Yes, that's an informed ability, and a little silly.

That said, if you look past that he doesn't come across that badly, especially in the original Zahn books. A number of his plans are actually fairly clever, especially his uses of the two-way cloaking device (and if you're expecting genuine strategic genius from a science fiction author, your expectations may be a little too high). They aren't beat-all, end-all plans: a cargo ship full of cloaked fighters is very situational and not likely to work more than once or twice, faking a weapon that can shoot through a planetary shield isn't going to fool people if they think about it too long, and the ruse was found out pretty quickly, blockading a planet with an unknown number of cloaked asteroids only bought him a couple of days. So he uses them to gain a temporary advantage, or to buy him a bit of time, and to build up his reputation.

He was fairly reasonable as Star Wars villains go: he might execute his men for failure on occasion, but not without giving them a chance to explain themselves. He didn't threaten people because he could beat them in a fight, or because he owned a superweapon, or because he was incredibly powerful in the Force; he threatened by virtue of being a sensible commander with an actual grasp of tactics. Of course, then he got his hands on a set of cloning tanks and a mad Jedi, decided to accelerate his plans, and it all went downhill... but if he'd been more patient, he might have done pretty well.

The later books tend to exaggerate his reputation, I think, both in-universe and outside, and they also try to paint him as too much of a good guy. Fandom has a tendency to do likewise. The original portrayal had him definitely on the Wrong Side, but not just evil for the sake of being evil. He was competent and threatening, but not infallible (his failure to figure out what was up with the Noghri doesn't really count as a mistake, since that would have been an utterly absurd conclusion to come to, but thinking he could control C'baoth does). Which makes for a pretty good villain, and a refreshing change from the staggeringly powerful evil Force-user, or the Imperial officer who stumbles across a superweapon, or the hitherto unknown race of powerful aliens, that we normally get in the Star Wars expanded universe.

I wouldn't say he's my favorite Star Wars villain, because come on, Darth Vader. But he's neat.
I'll also defend GLaDOS while I'm here- she made that game. If she hadn't been there, or if she hadn't been funny, it would not have been funny or all that interesting: there would have been occasional creepy-funny comments from the turrets, and some out-of-context writing on the wall. She was an amusingly crazy villain who gave you a fun game; what more do you want?

And since I'm here, I suppose I'll vote...

The Party
Darth Vader
Saruman
Emperor Palpatine
Loki (Norse mythology)
HAL 9000

And... I think I'll leave off there, really; I like a number of the other ones on the list, but these are the ones that really stand out for me. If she'd been nominated, the Baroness Ceausescu from Paul Park's Roumania series would get a vote too, but ah well.

I agree with Ozy being a little to high. From what I know, he had very little that made him awesome, and he accomplished even less.
Lets see:
Rich
Blew Up NY for the Greater Good

Practically anyone who was nominated is at least even to this if not better.:smallannoyed:

Examples:
Voldemort: Nearly took out the current magical leadership in the world, came back from the dead (sort of) a bunch of times, and was Lich-style unkillable.Plus he actually was a villain.

Ocelot: Not so much as a villain too, but he managed to take on multiple generations practically superhumans, and prove that they were really working for the bad guys.

Davros: Created the Daleks, nearly destroyed the multiverse.

Sauron: Nearly took over the middle Earth without technically being alive.

Sylar: Tricked almost everyone beat out most of the BBEGs of the season, and can't die.

Palpatine: Controlled both sides of the galaxy in a massive war, and got away with becoming emperor clean.

etc.

And that's just off the top of my head.

The reason Ozy ranks that high is not so much the fact that he blew up New York for the greater good, but it appears that his actions were in fact successful and perhaps even justifiable.

With most other villains, this is not true. No matter how sympathetic they are or how rational their motives, they are almost certainly never portrayed as possibly being right and never have the heroes submit to their will by the end.

Depending on which version you want, he blew up MANY cities at the same time, or he didn't blow NY up at all. He is in no way morally ambiguous. He murders millions of people and the people who helped him achieve his plan. He isn't a hero, he's a villain. He managed to outsmart an incredibly powerful superhuman to achieve his aim, and unlike most other villains he successfully completed his plan AND turned all the remaining heros to his side. He does kinda deserve to be up in the top ten.

A lot of people don't equate strength or even levels of success on how good a villain they were. Some just go by what interests them.

Using some of your examples Llama

Voldy= Beaten by a teenager, rather obvious nazi parody, has a spell that can kill anything and yet never seems to be able to hit anything. Sorry, dude interested me less than Snape (who unfortunately turned out good)

Sauron= sure he had power, but we go by Sil and he was less than Morgoth, but both were less interesting than Saruman. And it's not solely because Sauron was never seen in LotR, Big Brother was an amazingly interesting unseen villain. But though I love Tolkien Sauron never could draw my interest

Sylar= have you seen the last 2 seasons?

Palpatine= This one had potential, if it wasn't for the terrible terrible lines Episode III he'd be high on my list. But again it's not all about power, and a lot about style.

Nope. Still murdered millions of people, which puts him squarely in the villain category, by most. Just because his plan worked doesn't mean he was in the morally right. Sure, he's morally ambigious in some respects, but the fact that he may not have been entirely evil doesn't mean that he's not a villain.

Still, was there really a clear good guy in that story at all?

Sure. Dan Dreiberg. Malcolm Long. Even Rorschach is a good guy, in a Punisher-like way.

As for the actions possibly being condonable, many others could be argued the same.

It's not really that his actions are condonable. It's that his actions were successful.

Did Voldemort achieve domination over death and the Wizarding World? Nah, he was killed by some punk kid.

Did Sauron manage to take over Middle Earth? Nope, stricken to the ground and his fancy ring taken from him.

Did Darth Vader save his girl, convert his kids to the Dark Side, or kill his master to rule the Empire? Nope, he got convinced by some dopey kid that he's really a good guy and ends up dying because of it.

Did Mr. Teatime actually permanantly destroy the Hogfather? Nope. Got knocked off the Assassin's tower.

Ozy, on the other hand, succeeded in creating world peace with his plan, at the cost of millions.

Ozy, on the other hand, succeeded in creating world peace with his plan, at the cost of millions.

On the point of success here, as opposed to style, what did all of Ozy's killing accomplish for him? Is world peace even a goal of a villain? And if that was his goal, then I would certainly consider him both a hero and a villain, but this would in the long run, be for the greater good. Although I do see where you are getting at here.

And on the point of villainy, where success is important, in the long run is the villain even a villain? I imagine that after a while, the lines would blur, and the "heroes" would simply be those that succeed, and the "villains" would be those that do not, with the ones that nearly did being great.

So basically, the rest of the world could consider Ozy a hero, but is he had nearly succeeded, he would have been an epic villain.

On second thought, thios discussion might work better here (http://www.giantitp.com/forums/showthread.php?t=111844).

Teatime may be ten times the villain that Ozymandias was, but Carcer Dun's ten times the villain Teatime was. Teatime was goofily psychotic, the Discworld's Joker. He joked and tricked his associates around a little too much for my liking. Carcer, on the other hand, is the embodiment of pure, simple, banal human evil.

Interesting...
I specifically remember your post, being the first after DDM told me to PM people, and with the Muckfuthering thing, I must have missed it.:smallmad:
I was quite sure that I got the rest of those votes, but not the Id one, so I have given him a vote.

This is strange...

I will go back and recount all of the votes this weekend, then to be sure.

Carcer is pure self serving evil with one more knife, Teatime is a man with the brains and the insane skill to work out how to kill gods and control the minds of the entire human race and went down to the Disk's most Mary Sueish protagonist.

Point. Teatime outwits Death himself. Only Death's granddaughter is able to stop him. And if he'd known that Death had a granddaughter, I'm sure Teatime would have made his plans accordingly.

I dunno.I got nothing against the best of the five horsemen, but are we sure he's a fair comparison to Sam Vimes? Note: exaggeration for comic effect.

Vimes = Badass, agreed.
Death = an entity that has to try very hard to take more than 18 strokes on an 18 hole golf course.

True, if you judge a man by his enemies, Teatime is up there with the best. But he's always seemed too comic book villain to me, too capable of amazing feats. He accomplishes the fantastic with ease, which is why I suppose he's on the list to begin with. Carcer on the other hand chilled my blood when I read about him because I could imagine him existing in real life. That's why I think he's the better villain. I wasn't scared of the idea of Teatime, but of Carcer. To each his own taste, I suppose.

He is in no way morally ambiguous. He murders millions of people and the people who helped him achieve his plan.
It is quite possible to murder millions and still be seen as doing the right thing if the benefit is great enough. Utilitarianism is like that (which is what most people with a thought out moral structure go by).

The only villain who scared me was Carcer.

This sounds the best.
Voting is now closed anyway, so tie breaking is up.
Post the villains should be highest in your opinion of the 3 top tied categories. (15, 11, and 8 votes.)

Example of how this works:
Joker
Xykon
Doom

This will allow for the top 10 to be found.
The sub votes will be posted next to each character.

Edited.

For 1st place, my tie breaker vote goes to Ozymandias, I appreciate that you might not agree with his position, but surely you realise actually succeeding in his scheme gives him major brownie points? Villains tend to have an awful lot of "nearly"s.

Xykon. Vader should not be on the list, he turned good as well as any mystique of his fall was horribly ruined in the new trilogy.
Hmmm, last one is hard. Morgoth was less interesting than any of his lieutenants (quake in fear of Gothmog), Moriarty wasn't really in that much, Ganon was a great game villain, actually I'd give him easiliy the best game villain of all time, The Party was awesomely oppressive, HAL could sing Daisy in the most eerie voice imaginable, and Doom was possibly the greatest megalomaniac of all time. I have to give it too HAL just barely over The Party and Ganondorf

Finn Solomon

Joker, Vader and Doom. Vader's legacy on history cannot be underestimated. Not even the prequels could kill his mystique. Darth Vader will be a synonym for villain for years to come.
